Girls Change in Classroom

Sankei has discovered a "gender free" school where girls don't mind changing their clothes in classroom in front of the boys. The reporter goes on to say how shocked he was to discover this.

Would you approve of "gender free" schools which encouraged both genders to change clothes in front of each other?
If your answer is "yes" it means that you don't mind going nekkid in front of the other gender.

This just gave me a flashback. When in primary school, kids who forgot to bring in their PE shorts were made to do PE in underpants. Incredibly embarrassing. Luckily I didn't have any skid marks when it happened.

Photo of girl who doesn't mind changing in class (or having her photo taken while doing so) from Gelbooru.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

I wish I went to school there. Then I wouldn't have had to worry about getting in trouble for watching the girls shower..

Well, it's not that I wouldn't mind, it's that I'd be checking out the girls while I changed. Ignoring possibly embarassing predicaments from this, would I mind if they did the same to me? Not really, I work hard to look hot =P

Although it's not something I would realistically approve of.

Haha I think that we all forget that Japanese girls aren't different from girls elsewhere. They aren't all the idols or (in my case atleast) the 2d girls we oogle over. And whoever first came up with the idea to draw those thigh highs with the ribbon tie needs to be awarded a medal.

I second that motion. I love almost any clothing made with ribbons or consisting of only ribbons.

But the whole "gender free" concept is interesting. At a young age it may work, but as hormones rage and they hit puberty, that may be an odd time to have community changing.

Haha yeah. I meant no offense to regular females though. The odds are just stacked horribly in favor of 2d/idol girls. They are up against an idealised version of man's fantasies. A product of meticulous planning and concious thought, there is just no competing with random gene pools and what have you.

Yes, I approve. So much so in fact, that I think this should be done all over the world from the first year of school onwards.

Why? Simple: I firmly believe that this whole attitude of "nudity is evil" is what causes things such as negative self-image and sexual... what's the word... problems? (Can't find the word I'm looking for, so let's just go with that)
Simply because adults go all hush-hush about it, kids wonder what all the fuss is about and start doing silly stuff in secret to satisfy their curiosity. I really believe that if stuff like changing in front of others is as normal as eating, and if you properly educate kids from young ages, society would be a much healthier place.
The fact that the reporter is "shocked" shows exactly what I mean. What's wrong with seeing another person's body? Will it kill them? Will it emotionally scar them for the rest of their lives? No. Unless they've been taught from a young age that it's a bad thing, which is the case for pretty much everyone in the western world these days.

I mean, really (warning: Cliche coming up): If we weren't meant to be nude in front of each other, we'd be born with clothes or fur.

    Sorry for the semi-rant >.>

In high school marching band, we (guys and girls) would often have to change on the bus into our uniforms. At the beginning there were lots of jokes and a bit of peeping (not hard when all you need to do is look over your shoulder), but by the end of the season it had simply become routine.
It's possible that a "gender free" school would encourage kids to become more accustomed to the opposite sex (and maybe less perverted due to constant exposure) so hey, it's worth a shot.

Ah yes, this reminds me when I was a young lad back in elementary school. Both boys and girls would change at the same time in the classroom. As usual, I enjoyed looking at the other side of the room where the girls change XD

But by high school everyone all became embarrassed. We would have shifts on who will change first in the classroom. We couldn't force ourselves to change in the comfort rooms because it's stinky and the floor is covered with mud.

I definitely think this is a great thing. On top of getting rid of uptight people who think nudity is wrong, I think it would help to satiate children's natural curiosity of the other sex; something that Freud formed part of his theories on; along with possibly allowing children to grow up into more confident and free individuals (if someone wants to debate that, I'm open to.)

Sounds wrong to me... especially "encouraged".

I remember back in primary and secondary school days on days we have PE, most of us will just wear the PE attire under the uniform. When its PE time just take off uniform in class then go.

After PE some would just wear the uniform over the PE attire and others will go to the toilet to take off the PE attire and put on the uniform.

I don't think it's a good idea. Today some kids at age 10 are better informed at pornographic terms than me and even clothed people can be considered indecent (by those kids). Both genders can act like that today and it's just plain wrong. Because some kids have this unnatural view of the human body then we need to protect the decent children from this.

There is something really wrong with a world where 10 year olds know more about obscene indecent acts than grownups.

Exactly, from paranoid parents, teachers and other people in power that tell these kids that nudity is wrong, for whatever reason (moral, religious, whatever) even though it's a completely natural thing.

If we'd properly educate them on the human body, both genders, the kind of issues you mention would be a thing of the past.

Those unnatural views comes from the porn industry, some teachers and some parents. I don't think it comes from paranoid grownups, it's more like the teacher, who all of a sudden decided to encourage an 11 year old boy to get a homosexual encounter (this really happened!). How is a boy of that age supposed to handle that?

I'm in favour of proper education about the human body but with teachers telling stuff like that and/or declaring that they should figure it out on their own on the internet, then I will say that part of the problem is lack of education.

No, the porn industry (and that teacher you mentioned) is a result of the paranoid suppression of natural behavior, not the other way around.

Educate children on sexuality from a young age, and they would have no need to experiment or look stuff up on the internet, which will inevitably end up with them finding porn, causing even more distorted views.

I think you missed my point. It's not wise to have children of both genders change in the same room because some children acts like this. Getting those children to have a natural view on the human body is a different issue that can't be solved by changing cloth.

And about browsing the internet for information. Schools really do go like "now you have to learn about X. Search google for this and write a report that you should hand in". It's like the teachers try to make google give the education rather than doing themselves, but that's a completely different issue.

      Wrong, how?

What damage could seeing some skin possibly do? It won't kill you. It won't damage your eyes. It won't hurt you mentally... I mean, do you get sick from watching your own body in the mirror?

The only possible way for anyone to find nudity wrong, is if they were told it is wrong by someone they look up to for advice growing up: A parent or teacher for example.

You sound like a nudist defending your way of life.
It's actually completely natural to be shy about showing certain parts of your body to other people. The "private parts" aren't called that by random. It's actually because it's natural to keep it private.

If it is completely natural to be shy about certain parts of your body, why aren't babies and young kids covering it up at all times? They don't care, so why should we? Not to mention animals don't give a damn either.

            What CAN babies do, huh?
Babies have very interactive minds, but they lack the ability to do much other than cry. That statement's a no go.

Regarding young kids, they are indeed not covering it up, but that's merely because they're out of any self-awareness stage. Without the aid of media, parental guideance, or otherwise, the young child will not bother to cover up because of one reason: he/she is not aware of the social effects of not doing so.

However, if you're pulling the natural card, it's not natural to sit on the toilet and go do your business there. It's all socially taught as well. The mere status as "natural" doesn't depict anything other than "natural". You seem to be lending credence and bias to "natural", while attacking those that hold to the exact opposite.

The difference here is that being taught to sit on the toilet to relieve yourself doesn't cause all kinds of psychological problems.

Being taught to think of your body as something sinful and dirty is a bad thing for you, mentally. It causes shyness at best and severe depression and illnesses such as bolemia and anorexia at worst, even leading to suicide in some cases.

Now, don't get me wrong: I'm not trying to say here that people should walk around naked all the time. Clothes serve a purpose and personally, I love to see nice clothes on a nice girl. The point I'm trying to make here is that your body isn't something you should be ashamed of, and that things such as separate changing rooms for male/female is quite ridiculous if you think about it.
I mean, why is it that those are accepted, while most Weserners look at Burqas with disgust, even though it's basically the same idea (just taken a bit further)?

Babies have to figure out their own body first. If we talk about natural behaviour of grownups, then I guess the best we can do is to look at how "uncivilized" tribes behaved when the white man first arrived. In Amazonas it's really warm and humid. This means that cloth isn't very nice to wear, specially not if you pass through the jungle where cloth can be caught in the plants. The Indians were dressed at the groin area (both in front and back) as the only clothing. It could be culture, but it's the same in Africa, Southern Asia and Australia. Before the white man started travelling between continents, I don't think there could be a culture spread that would tell all people that the groin region should be concealed.

Many years ago some hippies convinced the minister of education that the free spirited people as we are should ensure that the genders are treated equally. As a result of this the schoolkids should use the same changing room at PE. It didn't last long because the result was that nearly nobody would use the showers since it meant removing the underwear. I changed together with girls at PE when I was 6 or 7, but at that age I didn't care at all. In fact I noticed so little that the only thing I can remember is when one guy decided to shower with all his cloth on. He was a strange kid and was removed from his parents half a year later because the police caught him red handed for burglary at midnight.

To answer the question: no, I wouldn't send my kids to a school like that. Kids usually have a natural limit to how exposed they want to be and it's ill treatment to force them not to respect that limit. Worst case means that they will learn to ignore their limit and some grownup might abuse that.

Mixed gender cloth changing should remain in fiction where it belongs.

    Wish they had something like this when I was going to school. It's for the best they didn't. I might have had trouble changing because a certain........problem........would come up. ^^;

That's a good philosophy. (The one that paralleled underwear and bathing suits.) The philosophy about alcohol only applies if you look at nudity as a bad thing, because getting drunk is looked at as a bad thing. So basically, the question with that philosophy is: Is being nude worse than being drunk? The answer seems quite obvious to me, since we were born nude, and we create new life by being nude (most of the time...)
