Cyber Theft

A young salary man aged 20 had his precious online game character deleted by a colleague which he had been leveling up for over 3 years.
The salary man contacted the cyber police to report the incident and the colleague is being prosecuted for unauthorized access...

I don't play any online games so don't know but cat you save these characters?
Have always wanted to try out Mabinogi but never got round to it. Do you indulge in online gaming and if so which games do you recommend to play or stay away from?

As for cyber theft - not happened to me so far.

I heard about this earlier. If it was WoW they can just do a character restore. What kind of dumb MMO doesn't offer something like this?

I enjoy Guildwars.. characters are saved online.. to my knowledge you can only delete them intentionally.. City of Heroes and City of Villains look like great fun (especially now they combined the two).

I think it's highly likely that a GM can restore his character and items, although some games take the you get scammed it's your own fault approach.

I used to play Lineage II on a retail server. Got to 80/80, Hero, and the Divine Summoner transformation...... then quit since I didn't really have anything else to go for. That and I had a huge stack of RPGs I needed to play.

I have played just about every type of online game. Most of the time your stats are saved on the server you are playing unless you are playing on a console. If his friend deleted the characters its because the victim gave out his User ID and Password. Mabinogi is kinda lame and couldn't keep my interest.

Alot of instances of these kind of things happened before and the first time i heard about it was about 2 brothers, where one stole the other's items and the victim consequently committed suicide.

As for me though, not happened so far, I get very paranoid over possible keyloggers and things like that ^^"

I've played many MMOs. Ragnarok Online, Ragnarok Online 2, Mabinogi, World of Warcraft, Rappelz, Holic Online, Final Fantasy XI. Personally, i've never gotten "hacked" on any of my accounts.
Playing MMOs are really fun when you have other friends to play with and chat. If its to play by yourself then it becomes very boring very fast, unless you like playing by yourself and are the loner-type that doesnt like to socialize. =P
As far as reporting someone "hacking" into your personal information, whether it be bank info or your login information to a MMO, you could still get in trouble for that.
Character saves are usually server-based saves. Your character is usually saved on their servers and not in your computer. Not sure if all MMOs work that way so dont hold it against me if i'm wrong =P but usually thats the case. I've emulated one MMO on my home pc and thats how it was.

Not sure about other games, but in World of Warcraft the GMs are super responsible and pretty much anything can be rolled back, which includes deletion (intention or unintentional) of items, transfer of gold, and even character deletion. According to my friend (whom I don't talk to anymore since he's pissy cuz he didn't get into university thanks to WoW) the blizz GMs will bring back your character back no matter how many times it gets deleted (or crap happens).

That's not a big deal, you can just phone the company or a mod and explain the situation and they can reinstate the character, it happens ALL THE TIME in WoW where Addicted mmorpgers delete their characters only to come back two days later with tons of regrets (WoW Detox anyone?).

    Very bad news...
Well, usually MMOs keep characters in backup to avoid such things.
You know, you can delete the character, but it isn't actually deleted from the database.

I started playing WoW once, and also tested some other stuff... but it's too adicting, and I don't have time to spend on those... so I ended up dropping them, even though I liked playing.

I recommend staying away of ANY of them if you want to have free time for other stuff Danny.. XD

Well, I do ocasionally play Combat Arms... but since it's more FPS than MMO, doesn't count.

    Also: MISAO FTW!

    yikes 3 freaking yrs

yes its possible to save characters and they are saved on game server
and its possible to delete. not all mmorpg is able to restore your character.

used to play alot of mmorpg but quit'ed as it was taking over my life instead
played around 8hrs and more each day
    its a bad addiction..
mainly you are addiction to leveling your character
    addicted to the social interaction
addicted to the superiority and importance that you have online

dont get me wrong here, i love MMORPG and it really fun but dont make it into an addiction.

Mabinogi... it kind of makes boring and repetitive quests into boring and repetitive household chores... and with fantasy element. You have the potential to do any combination of skills since there are no classes, but that is how they make money off of you as you buy character cards to reset your level and age so you can get more skill points.

I play RF online like crazy back before I was in my country. If that happened to me I won't just sue that person, I'll make him pay double the amount that's been worth my hard level-uped character.

Danny, I cannot recommend Asda Story over Mabinogi by a massive margin. Because you get the kind of look and music you'd expect from a MMORPG seen in Lucky Star. You also get a .hack-like experience, minus the PKing. And the only two downsides are the fact you are limited at this time (when it comes to towns and common equipment you can buy) and it is for the PC. Besides that, the typos and visual glitches can be overlooked. That, and unlike Mabinogi, you do not have a time limit on the challenges... as well as both the the map and controls are easier to use.

As for the topic at hand, I never had it happen. I pretty much come and go... with the acceptation of Gaia Online. I have been there since 2004, but might not play their zOMG, unless they change the combat system for it. I was on Guild Wars (loved the "Nevermore Raven Bow"), but quit because the second part of the first game sucked and did not have the money to get the other ones. (That, and not fond of both the level 20 cap and inability to form a hunting party.)

Besides that, so far so good with Asda Story. And I figure that the technical issues will be over with in a month.

      Scratch Asda Story. At least, for me. The thing deleted my entire friends list and has been glitching badly. I even died several times because it was not being responsive and thought it was my laptop. Last time it did this, I pretty much gave up for a while and going to try RO. -_-;;

From my knowledge, characters on massive multiplayer online role playing games are saved. The only way to delete these characters can either be done by consent of the "owner" or an administrator with specific reasons. Of course, bugs may occur along the way or something like that to ruin the whole gaming experience... or a new version to get out of a beta release. In that case, it isn't exactly deleting the character... more like loss of your ingame character and you know who to blame for that ^^; I use to play Maple Story with a couple of friends. It was pretty lame... but playing next to friends made it worth while. I wasn't particularly skilled at the game but I did manage a respectable level then was forced to ditch when the full version of the game came out. I continued playing a bit and surpassed my previous character. After that, the game kind of lost meaning. Friends stopped playing and I lost all motivation for playing on that character. I didn't delete the character. The best way to describe it is to say its in suspended animation or something...

To the guy who lost that game character after 3 years of hard work, sucks to be him! If I remember correctly, his colleague gained access to the character before this incident. Didn't it occur to the owner that there might be some changes that he didn't go through with...? Either way, sucks to be that guy, hope he moves on from games. Sure they're fun but who has time for them now?

I did play online games in the past. I cannot believe I wasted all that time playing those games.. Yes, they were fun and addicting, but as soon as you reach that point where leveling takes like weeks... you get kinda bored.

I recommend people to stay away from these types of games if you have better things to do in life. You don't want to look back and wonder why you failed school or uni etc. Konata is a good example. As soon as you start, you pretty much become addicted, unless you can control yourself...

Even if you have a slight urge to play, try to resist that temptation. Yes... some of the games look nice and fun to play etc, but take in consideration that these games are never-ending and will take up A LOT of your free-time.

I heard that some games, if you delete your character, the only way to restore it, is by doing a roll-back on the servers. Which means everyone's characters get rolled-back too.

    You pay about $15-20 per month so 3 years is about $15 x 36 = $540 of playing roughly. But besides the monetary part, the player also put his/her effort, time, patience and all that over 3 years of time so deleting the character can be pretty shocking. I had a friend who's account got hacked by hacker and he quit the game and never came back so one can see the magnitude of the incident there ^^;

      ...Interesting comparison. ^^;

I shy away from MMOs in general. I don't like playing online - like to stay offline when I game, especially since there's at least an equal amount of good people and complete idiots and jerks online. The most important thing though, is that I need my games to have closure. MMOs don't give me that, not to mention they suck up a lot of time.

somehow the image reminds me of Tenrou. ^^; anyway didn't know one can be prosecuted in court for deleting an online character. however I tend to think that the colleague is doing the salary man a favor, 3 years of playing online games means 3 years of wasted time.
I got addicted on online games years ago as well, it wasn't until I saw people with nothing to show for in life except a high level online character, that I decided to cut myself off.
I'd recommend to "stay away" from these games.
about saving the character, you can do so, but the save file wouldn't be on your local computer, thus once you delete the character online, you'd probably need to ask support or the server administrator if it's possible for them to restore your character.

I think the only online game I actually played... and playing, is Team Fortress 2 because of the pure fun it delivers,
seriously, what can be more fun then setting players on fire and then observing how much ruckus and chaos you caused to them with your appearance :)
Didn't have much time to play it for the last 2 month though :(

Tho I wouldn’t recommend it =p I wish I can stay away from FFXI but I cant… However now I’m not that addicted how I used to be before... playing for about 15hours straight, just taking bathroom breaks for walk down to the refrigerator just to get drink or snack… ^^; but that was back in the days XD I would be really really upset if my friend deletes my account… I dont think there is be a way get it back, but im not so to sure…

Can't really say I've played MMO's as its not my thing (I prefer my FPS and RTS and no monthly fees), but if anyone hacked my Steam account I'd be very pissed, as I buy a ton of games off Steam nowadays, and that'd just be tantamount to stealing those games I've purchased with my hard-earned money.

Danny, unlike single player games, there are no menus or saving points in MMO games to manually save or load you character whenever you like. Transactions in MMO games are recorded to the database in real-time and your last position is saved when you log out of the game. You can't undo actions in MMO games unless you have access to the database.

A few words of advice. You'll need friends in Mabinogi or any other MMORPGs to really enjoy such online games. Friends who know their stuff would be a bonus; just like Konata babysitting the Hiiragi sisters in the Lucky Star OVA ^^. You can always make in-game virtual friends but that would take time. Otherwise, you're better off playing single player games.

I'm yet to find the perfect MMO. I've been spoiled by how fun and accessible WoW compared to games like AO where the theme is amazing and the ideas are awesome, they just aren't executed in the best way.

imho cyber police wont help him so much, since he with or without reason seems *told* his friend regarding his online game character including access password, that make his friend can access his game account and delete his character. anyway GM should can help him recover his deleted character...

regarding online game, lots cool online game lately and there lots of them originally from korea, i dunno why but seems some korean online game don't encrypt their database, thus make easy to get hacked. But seems this issue no longer seen nowadays though...

another things that u have to worry before playing a online game is how many BOT on the online game, like RO, in some country, there are more BOTs than players ... and thats not funny.

imho FFXI is a online game that really good maintained one, well you can find better game if you want to start new one, since this game already 3years old (correct me if i wrong), lots other online game have better graphic engine than ffxi

I thought this post was about stealing people's art online when I saw the title.

Anyways, yes I play a lot of MMOs, Mabinogi specifically at the moment. I'm loving it a lot. I've also played other ones like Ragnarok Online, Emil Chronicle Online, PangYa, Trickster Online and Yogurting. I find RO and Mabinogi to be the best, but that's because they appeal to my 'anime-esque' taste in graphics. There's a lot of F2P and P2P MMOs out there, but I'd recommend P2P games as the service and quality of the games will generally be better. The type of games depends on your personal taste. However, no matter what, these games ARE addictive, so don't play too much. It will suck the life out of you. But if you do play, play with friends ^^ They also all have 'grind' aspects, just packaged differently from game to game.

Regarding character deletion (whether via hacking or accidental), most games will offer you an opportunity to restore the data, so long as you tell them ASAP. Most do not list is as a service, but if you contact the GMs, they will usually be able to do it for you. The best advice is to not let other people on your account in the first place.

    MMOs are fun though ^^
