Tokikake

Makoto is an ordinary school girl up until the point where she discovers that she can time leap into the past. While looking around in a laboratory one day at school (as all school girls do), she falls and crushes a wallnut on the floor which leaves a number on the back of her arm. It is only until further on in the story when she discovers that the changing numbers on her arm represent the amount of times she is able to leap into the past.

The first time she discovers that she has this handy ability is when she is about to be hit by a train. She speeds into a rail crossing unable to stop her bike due to faulty brakes - at which point her ability took over and hurled her back a few minutes into the past...

During the first half of the film we see makoto using her time leaping ability for trivial things like being able to spend hours and hours singing karaoke - she would leap back through time so she can enjoy more singing. She also uses up her leaps going back trying to set up couples etc.

Near the end of the film, one of her friends takes Makotos bike - he does not know about the faulty brakes until he is hurled in front of a train. By this time, Makoto has used up all her time leaps and cant leap back into the past to stop the accident. But...

I've always wanted to watch Tokikake (short for Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo(時をかける少女)) since I learned about it from last years Tokyo Anime Fair but never made it to the cinema. Tokikake recently came out on DVD and I snapped it up straight away.
Tokikake is a warm anime that gives you a fuzzy feeling. The animation and music is spot on and the backdrops are fantastic - If I left Japan for whatever reason (very unlikely though), I would watch this anime all the time to catch nostalgic scenes of Japan. There's lots of humor to be had in Tokikake and is intriguing to watch - theres much more to the story than just Makoto leaping back through time. My wife and I enjoyed it thoroughly and recommend it much.
