Nintendo Announces new DS, the DSi

Nitty gritty details for the DSi below. I like the thought of the larger screen size and being able to use an SD card to view images and audio - still not sure if I would get one straight away though.

Original text from nya-chama below.

Rumours have circled around the net for a few days now, but it seems they were true. Nintendo just announced the new DS model. The DSi.

The DSi is 12% thinner than its predecessor but at the price of the GBA slot. I has two cameras and a slightly bigger screen. One camera(outside one?) will be capable of 3megapixels.

It will have an SD slot to store photos and music; as well as storing downloadable games and swapping between the Wii.

Built in web browser (hope it's better than the old Opera version)

New DS shop will be available where you will be able to buy "DS Ware", software prices from the range of free to 800 points. If you buy one before March 2009, you will receive 1000 points for free.

A new service called "Nintendo Zone" will start similar to the free wi-fi in every McDonalds the US had a while back.

SO! People what are your thoughts? It's being retailed at the not-so-cheap-price of ¥18,900 (USD$180).

I loved replaying my old GBA games when the DS was first released but 4 years later I find myself with an empty slot all the time >.>
Will the camera will be used for any games or if it's just tobe used a simple camera...
I guess the only thing I would get excited about is the smaller size, the web browser and the new DS Store. Downloading games are so much convenient! *cought*R4*cough*, speaking of which.... will this be R4 proof? If so... how long before it's hacked?

Doesn't seem like its worth getting. I'll use an actual camera for pictures, and odds are knowing of how much of tightwad that Nintendo is, they'll most likely not give other developers access to the camera feature anyways.

Bigger screen is much appreciated though, however since everyone and their dog has a DS in Japan, I don't honestly see many going out for it.

I've always wondered why that was, if there some sort of cultural background reason for it. People over here aren't persuaded to upgrade nearly as easily.

Being low on cash, with a DSlite, is definitely not gonna think about upgrading.
Its released in 2009, still time to save up money when the US/EU release.
A part time job would easily help afford a DSi in the future X3

I guess there won't be many people upgrading their DS' :s

It's too late for me. I started off with the Odyssey². It went to the Nintendo Entertainment System, with the Power Pad. And then Sega tried taking over, but failed. And it ended when the NDS failed to give me RPGs and other games that could keep my attention.

    Which means... Not for me.

Why make them 'slightly bigger' I see no difference... I'm still playing with an original DS, and lovin' it!
And the fact they sacrificed the GBA slot is heartless and cruel.....(Although my nintendo geeks should still have their GBA, and GBC, I know I do lol) I don't care if its a little bit thinner...so freakin' what? Just means its more fragile, like the PSP slim n lite, whyyyy?? At least you can hook that up to the tv and play your UMD's through it.. but I'd still buy the chunkier one...

Doesn't look much different besides the appearance of the cameras. 3MP cameras also do not mean anything if their sensor sucks. My phone's camera is 2MP but its so darn noisy that you can only take outdoor shots with bright light clearly. Otherwise, it will automatically crank up the ISO which is a pain.

As for the screen, pretty much looks the same. Note: Bigger screen = more pixelated images if they are still using the same "graphics card" in it and same resolution.

OOooh, can you imagine the old version DS lites going for cheap when that launches?! ^.^ That would be so awesome, I'd have to replace my scratched up one! Though, the internet does sound appealing, which is what I typically used my last DS for anyway, so I couldn't tell you what I'd do. Definitely sad about the GBA slot though. :( No more add-on features I suppose?

For anyone with a DS already this may not be a worthwhile purchase but it is even more incentive to get a DS if you don't have one. The new features are cool, but not groundbreaking by any means.

But if we look at the Nintendo sales figures, we can assume that it will sell amazingly and there will be plenty of waiting to get hold of one :)

Nothing will happen to them. You can still play them on you DS Lite, DS Phat, GBA, GBA SP, GBA Micro, Gameboy Player, etc. etc. etc.

Your old games don't just disappear when a new system launches.

I like. I'd pay the money for this because Nintendo has a very poor track record for letting me down. Perhaps I'm just easy, I don't know. But I'll refrain from getting excited until I see them on the retail shelves.

On a side note, I see a lot of candid and concealed up-skirt, down-blouse, and booty level close-ups taken with this thing. Let the games begin.

So far i see a lack of information on the audio capabilities for the DSi. I frist heard you would be able to play music so i was hoping they give more details about that such as how much room does it come with, or what kind of memory stick's can be used with how much space.

As for the camera, it's like buying a cellphone with a camera; it's meaningless to me.
