Daytime Sleepiness Gene

Japan Probe reports...

Japanese scientists believe they have found the gene that causes narcolepsy:

It occurs in 1 out of 2,500 individuals in the United States and Europe, but is at least 4 times more frequent in Japanese.

The researchers analyzed the genomes, or DNA, of 222 narcoleptic Japanese and 389 others who did not have that condition, and one gene variant occurred with significant frequency among those with narcolepsy, they wrote in a paper published in Nature Genetics.

So now you know why you see many folks over here sleeping around in public - this pic from the Japan Public Sleeping Returns article.

I do occasionally feel sleepy after lunch. Washing my face with cold water, brushing teeth with mint toothpaste and gargling with strong Listerine usually wakes me back up though ^^;
Do you feel sleeping during the day sometimes? What do you do to stay awake?

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

Really, if I feel sleepy I try my best to sleep regardless of the situation.

Your body's autonomic responses shouldn't constantly be ignored. And people wonder why they develop cancer and die young. Never underestimate the power of a siesta.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postprandial_dip apparently I'm sometimes in the "irresistable drowsiness" pool. Lunch can put me to sleep half an hour later and I could never figure out exactly why, though lately I haven't been affected... Could it be that eating less sugar is helping me stay awake?

Is it necessarily daytime sleepiness and not just people who need more sleep than others?

I'm surprised by the little sleep I need. My friend needs a good 8-10 hours of sleep or else he spends the who day walking around like a zombie, give him a comfortable chair and he'll be asleep in less than a min.

I'm a night owl, so yeah, depending what time I went to bed and how early I go to bed, I'll feel sleepy during the day, stronger if I had to wake up in the morning ^^; (for exemple, I need to wake up in 6 hours and I'm still up XD). When I feel too much drowsiness, I'll usually either grab a coffee or an energy drink, that alway help me to be more awake. Also, eating usually help me with the drowsiness instead of making me feel more tired like some other.

I think taking a break is very important aswell, alot of people work their day straight and barely stop for food and endup falling asleep.
Sometimes its better to take a few minutes to eat and strech your body... wash your face and get fresh air, it boosts senergy and spirit.
Daily exercise its not just to keep in shape but also to prevent the less used muscles in your body to go numb over time and keep them active, thus reducimng the chance of falling asleep on top of your keyboard (like me sometimes ^^;) or on the train in your way onto somewere.

Often feel tired during the day usually have some sort of energy drink or Chinese tea to wake me up (have a worrying addiction to Orange Lucozade energy drink :D ), much prefer to stay awake at night instead and usually feel much more awake.

I like sleeping throughout the entire day and only get energetic midway through the evening. After lunch and/or stepping on any sort of transportation puts me out like a light. My average for a car is within 2 minutes; bus within 5; subway within 10.

    ROFL... I don't think that's it... :P
Maybe japanese narcoleptics japanese have a harder time, but japanese who are not narcoleptics are probably victims of silent trains with heated seats and smooth rides... not to mention long commuting times and lack of sleep rather than genes.

I also get very sleepy after eating, and if the bed is confortable enough, I can go sleeping for 12+ hours straight. :P

The only problem is, specially during classes, nothing seems to wake me up.
I tried coffee, energy drinks, washing face, eating something spicy, poking myself with pencil, slapping myself in the face.

Sometimes napping for like 10 seconds and having an abrupt wake up (teacher shouting at me, or like when you doze off and wake up scared, with that falling sensation) will work. :P

Breakfast doesn't really help me get up in the morning. But lately I've been drinking this 100% fruit smoothie thing called Naked. Not only is it funny for it's name (shouting: "Hey let's get Naked") but it's good for you and the bitter taste would make anyone awake.

Quite difficult for me to get sleepy during the day unless i didn't have enough good sleep from last night or the lesson I'm taking is too boring to cradle me to the bed. If none of these happen, then I'm good to go all day long without any sleep coz i'm no bat.

Well....that is the normal case, in paranormal case of mine, i do get drowsy and sleepy if some entity were near me at the time or got inflicted...

Holy Sugar Honey Ice Tea, that face hugger pic was brillant.

For me Mathematics is the ultimate tranquilizer, the moment I walk into my maths-classroom you can literally countdown to when I sleep, it takes about 2 minutes after everyone settles down and I'm out. XD
However I don't really do anything to combat sleepiness but there has been several instances where I've slept for FAR too long... say about... 42 hours? That probably wasn't very good for me but hey~ it was school holidays and I only missed nearly two days.
