Anime Magazines

At the GSC offices going through some overseas anime and figure mags.
Here is Anime Insider and another one which I cant remember ^^;
When I was living back in the UK many moons ago, the only anime magazine I got to read was the official fanclub magazine published by Island Publications called "Manga" - cant remember the nitty gritty details even thought I wrote for them.
Last year I used to buy NewType a lot but these days just get my anime info from the internets.
Do you buy local anime mags in your region? if so which ones are good/crap?
How about the Japanese ones - do you get them too?
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.
If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

Unfortunatly theres not many around here...
But luckly theres good internet places like your website Danny that provide an awesome amount of info.
But I used to buy a anime and japanese games magazine, also a "health care" XP magazine as well.
Wich weren't bad at all but after getting a good internet connection (I believe it was around the 512kbs arrival some years ago) I stoped buying them.

I get all my info on the internet now--that way I can get multiple reviews before launching into something. I used to read Shonen Jump, though.
Hey, you mentioned GSC needs sculptors. Do you think they'd be interested in a ryugakusei intern?

I've never used anime magazines for news much, the main thing for me is having posters/full page layouts/miscellaneous furoku, or just pictures of series/characters in physical form which is more substantial to me than digital.
Back in the day before internet access there were very few chances to get any sort of mag, practically none were imported, and only in the late 90s did any sort of US domestic mag start (Animerica? They still around/anyone remember that?)

Yeah in france and belgium it's some local anime magazine, one is not bad : AnimeLand others is crap, by the old time i buy it but now with internet i don't have interest in it, by the way Japanese Mag is too great to not give any interest to mag like Degenki, Famitsu or Newtype ect...

Sadly there aren't any anime magazines in my country, only anime publication I have is a anime film festival magazine.

Stopped picking up North American magazines ever since NewType USA stopped. I still pick up Megami from Kinokuniya up here in NYC though for the centerfolds.

newtype is dead in the U.S. and anime insider and otaku USA are the cheap alternatives

Before Newtype was about to go out of publication, I was really close to picking up a subscription, but when I heard the news on one of the Anime News sites that they were going to stop making them,... I was so mad. I haven't picked up a Anime magazine in months since their departure...
I sometimes take a glance at Anime Insider, but I honestly might a chance with either Otaku USA or Protoculture Addicts because my friend subscribes to those and have very good articles.

I had a subscription to Newtype USA, and got it renewed a couple of months before they went under. They came back with a truly awful publication which took the current nihilist smart-ass tack of insulting one's own customers. You know the sort of thing I'm talking about; if someone writes in politely pointing out a significant error, they'll publish it with a condescending caviat telling the reader to get a life.
Thankfully, this rag went under after 5 issues, but the publishers then had the bathos to blame the public for not buying their magazine since it wasn't about anime anymore. Then why did they make the change?
I only buy Games Magazine now.

Anime/manga mags here still suck.
In fact, the only one I think is Neo... *sigh*

We have a local magazine called "Otaku Magazine", I find it to be much better than the US imports we get... I was reading through the Anime Insider with Yoko on the front (not sure on issue number) and was incredibly bored. Ever since the local magazine appeared though, the popularity of anime has really improved in the country, we even got a 24-hour anime channel as a result from it.
But I still prefer my Megami Magazines and G's, which I try to never miss an issue of. ^^

Now that Newtype USA 's gone, I haven't read an American anime magazine ever since (luckily there's Anime Insider and Newtype Japan and numerous others)!!
I read them!!

On topic: Ive never bothered with anime magazines.
Off Topic: There was a Death note Live action?! How did I miss this (buying now on amazon)... Wait, there is a second movie coming out in theaters in 3 weeks?!
Seems like anime Live action movies are starting to get some love. I really enjoyed the Initial D Live action movie. I can't remember specifics, but i remember liking the Fist of the North Star Live Action. Also I honestly believe the live action of GTO is better than the anime.

Well, I used to buy anime mags over here in Canada...
Until somebody high above decided to pull the plug on Newtype USA and made the worst decision ever. Making another magazine called PIQ, which failed after a few months.
I hope they bring back Newtype.
Makes me wonder why people makes decisions like that...

The first anime magazine I bought was an import from Spain to Argentina (I still remember it had Asuka on the cover). It was pretty nice and even had a CD full of stuff (that now is most likely protected by copyrights and whatnot). After wards I found a little local magazine called Lazer that is still incredibly popular.
When I came to USA I was very excited to get Newtype, but after suscribing for a year I didn't like it at all. I found most of its content pointless (besides they kept using the same anime for various issues) and half of them were just summaries of anime episodes. I could have used the pictures as posters, but 98% of them were covered by the text, so no good there either. A good waste of 100 bucks if you ask, but a lot of people still like it, so it's just me.

My first anime mag was Newtype USA, i started buying them monthly for about 2 years, on the 3rd year's Christmas i decided to get a subscription for my Christmas present...
Guess what, 3 weeks after that it decided to stop as Rin mentioned, never got my money back, instead they send me PIQ which is nowhere as good as Newtype, and now PIQ is bust as well cause no 1 is interested.
Me and my luck eh?

I don't buy any anime mags here in the US, I heard about the Newtype to PIQ fiasco though. Why would one cancel a good mag to make a crappier one??
http://sparklingzone.blog124.fc2.com/
There's one here called Otaku USA which isn't bad. I just wish they'd say what poster comes in the magazine on the cover, so I know before buying it. Also comes with a bonus DVD with a couple of anime episodes. But yeah, I used to buy more anime magazines back in the day when I didn't have the internet. These days I only buy them if they have cool extras.
Newtype USA was cool before it went under too. I liked the long pull out posters they had in there. I also had a subscription to Shonen Jump when it first started but it got pretty boring and I cancelled, lol.
Kinda curious about Cosmode USA and Shojo Beat but I haven't picked up either yet. Also found it funny that they actually sell a US edition of Megami Deluxe. But for people who already have the Japanese editions, it's nothing new.
As for Japanese mags, the only one I've gotten is B's LOG. XP

There has been several attempts on ani-maga in Brazil, but the one that remains is called "Neo Tokyo".
I don't have many issues mainly because, for some reason, despite reading lots of magazines, I don't like reading much about animes/mangas.
Probably because I don't like spoilers.
But it's a great magazine for those who like to read. Several articles with TONS of detailed information about animes and mangas.
And opposite to several other publication attempts, it looks much more like a professional job, with unbiased articles and lots of content with references and stuff.
I try to buy some japanese magazines everytime I go to Sao Paulo... the biggest city in Brazil, also the only one I know that has a bookstore that sells japanese imported magazines and books.
I would buy more if I knew how to read japanese. But I still buy for the pics, and the gifts that comes with the magazines.
Uh...

Anime Insider's available in the US too! I usually read it in the bookstore because it's not wrapped (like Newtype). The content is okay... it's not as extensive as Newtype of course, but suitable for people who are "beginners" to anime. I prefer Newtype USA over Anime Insider, and that other one... Otaku ____ (can't remember the name.) Since I live in NYC, there's many stores that offer anime magazines, such as Asahiya and Kinokuniya. I've been trying to improve my kanji skills, so nowadays I might stop by Kinokuniya and pick up a copy of Animage (IMHO, Animage > Newtype, content-wise and sometimes goodie-wise). We also get something like those heavy manga "phonebooks" through Viz and Yen Press (Shounen Jump, Shoujo Beat, Yen Plus!) Huh... I feel very fortunate to live here all of a sudden ^^"

r.i.p. newtype-usa, and the alternate junk they threw at us was not worth wiping your bum with! i like anime insider ok, and otaku-usa i did not like much. i now buy(even though japanese is basic) newtype from japan, and dengeki's for all the awesome pics and posters. i hope that a magazine company would start a killer anime mag we could all go nuts over, but i think i might be dreaming.

the funny thing is the magazines always have a different feel to it if they're not in japanese ^^; Even tho I don't know that much japanese I prefer to buy the japanese magazines just for the pictures :P

heh, me too
those local magazine didn't have enough to beat the internet >=D
i mean, they took the news from the internet themself, so why bother buy them if we already know them?
also, japanese magazine news is much more sophisticated! and entertaining
tho some local event are usually announced from there
its just not worth it

Recently distribution of English Anime Magazines have been increasing here in Australia. Most of the anime they talk about in those mags are quite old.
I prefer to keep up to date with anime-related stuff... which is why I buy Japanese magazines instead. I used to buy Megami Magazines from Kinokuniya, I can read bits and pieces here and there. Plus I like to look at the pictures ^^
http://darkdam.deviantart.com/
The english anime mags here take too long to post things that's current in japan. By the time they actually have them up I've already read about it on the internet. I used to buy the new type usa before it stopped coming out.

they have anime insider here at the local libaries...so once in awhile if im bored and im in there, ill pick up a copy and read it. Don't buy magazines, any kind, at all
???Confused???
Although there are both English and Japanese anime mags being sold around, I don't buy them since I can find all I want to know on the internet...now if they came with some perks then I'd think about it...

getting all your information from the internets is not healthy
I have a few PC mags and graphic design mags lying around. some of the information is dated but still informative and fun to sit down and read once in awhile.
I used to subscribe to shojo beat but I stopped after my subscription ran out. I prefer to by the volumes of individual series. Im collecting the NA version on Megami, only one issue out so far.

I wrote for Beckett a couple of time when it came to their Dragon Ball Z magazines. But that was also many moons ago.
As for magazines here, I stopped getting them. Mostly because Anime Insider is the best out of them all, since Otaku USA is pretty much all text and Protoculture does not get out all the details... as well as not know how to publish their manga section.
So when I can, I will generally pick up either Comptiq or Shonen Ace... depending on the bonus items. (And in this case, I am praying I can get September's issue of Comptiq since I want the bonus item in it.)

Cool, I used to read Anime Insider and because Newtype is expensive, I buy that less. Nowadays I get most of my anime info from the internet.

I used to buy Manga Max a long time ago, which was actually a UK mag. There aren't any mags I buy now as nothing catches my attention. I did buy a Dengeki G's magazine - but now I need to learn Kanji to read it!..

I have a small stack of some weekly-manga mags (I think it was from Malaysia) that I brought back when I was 15 years old. It was in Chinese, and the title translated was "Comic Weekly". It cost three bucks and I only read certain portions of it, but at that time I didn't remember hearing the voice of reason in my head at all. ^_^|||

Unfortunately all anime/manga magazines went bust, even the ones that were on a marker for like 8 years. Probably because when they started, in Poland anime/manga fanbase was just about to form itself so they were popular cause it was something new (and so does the internet). Then when fanbase stabilised, internet really kicked in and paper magazines became a thing in a past. They were too expensive, not as well made as their European/American not to mention Japanese equivalents and most of all not as recent as web pages. So... they had to go. I heard that there are still some more or less fanmade magazines but they are not officially sold by a big distribution networks, rather sold online or at the conventons.

I quite like the bi-monthly Comptiq Heroines H's series, but there hasn't been a new release since May. I thought it always had nice pictures in it ;p. And some other magazines that seem interesting at the time ;p (usually one that features Hirano Aya or Hamasaki Ayumi)

Anime/Manga magazines here? There's one called 'Animanga', I think, but two expensive and why even buy one when I have the internet.
