Two new otaku Japanese words for you today. "Ni Jigen" (2次元(にじげん)) means "2 dimensional" while "San Jigen" (3次元(さんじげん)) means "3 dimensional".
Apart from having their literal meaning, within the Japanese Otaku sphere, Ni Jigen refers to anime or manga female characters while San Jigen refers to real women. I've seen polls in Japanese and the outcome is that Ni Jigen always wins. I know there are a lot of Otaku out there who visit this site so the question has to be asked ^^;

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Anime category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

I disagree. The chances of finding a real person of truly "good" characteristics (beauty, intelligence, good intentions, etc) is very slim. Its much easier to find in Anime because it is created by people. But if you ask me to choose between anime and a girl of equal appeal, I'll take reality.

But... 2次元 are easier to find, and are always accepting and accommodating. They don't hide behind their appearance, one doesn't look beautiful and is shallow on the inside.

When it comes to 3次元 you need to search harder and deeper. Very often what is easily found and easily at hand is something you don't want or need.

In my Otaku guise I have to say 2次元!

Besides, nothing man made could compete with what I have in real life.

Anime, videogames, etc. girls are mostly characterized by this wish for perfection in physical traits, character, etc. even when they got their own quirks (one having almost exclusively bad traits is usually a villain or an outcast who will improve herself greatly with time... rule of thumb).

It's really not easy to find a girl (in real life) who will be (fully?) compatible with you, that will accept you no matter what and that will stay by your side for the rest of your life (let's go for the full picture shall we!) but it does exist (of course the reciprocal part is essential in a healthy, durable, true, loving and committed relationship).

Even if the chances are slim, it's truly worth trying... but it's also vital to remain cautious at all times (falling in love with virtual girls may involve much less constraints and everything, but you can easily imagine that interaction levels are not the same!)

I just hope my girlfriend will be the first and the only one for me. I am ready for it, and no 2D girl will ever take her place in my heart.

And dreaming about female idols is nice and all, but if you want your significant other to be exactly the same, well... There are many more factors to consider when being in a relationship.

Danny, the answer to your question is easy since anime is a Japanese phenomenon... For the people here, the results would be surely different. Cultural bias? ;)

I'll have to go 3D here. 2D girls are cute: but either she becomes real, or I become a drawing... If not, the interaction would be kind of difficult ^.^

hahah..I will definitely prefer the "San Jigen". The "Ni Jigen" are ultimately just a figment of another person's imagination..though I believe "Ni Jigen" are cute, but ya can't have interaction with them. This will be different in the case of "San Jigen".

It all ultimately boils down to interaction.

How I wish anime character can one day become real life..Hahaha..thats I think fat hope for me...

Interesting! For me, I choose 3D. But to explain Japan's preference for 2D, it's gotta be a cultural phenomenon. I don't see a high percentage of Asian women in Vegas, which may reflect their "exotic" factor outside of Japan. At the same time, I don't think ALL women in Japan are smouldering as your 3D example, lol, so the never-ending multi-colored variety of 2D beauty might appeal to Japan. Maybe the Japanese know something we don't? :)

I know that the 2D versions are based on what exists in reality, but a while ago Iori Yoshizuki was all I could think about.
Ack! Why can't all girls (and boys) be as purehearted as Yoshizuki~!

70 Percent?!? The 3D girl with the 'eyes' gets an unfair advantage. If 2D was represented with 'eyes' you guys wouldn't be voting so unfairly.

Movies are better than real life.
2D girls are better than 3D.

2D girls, like any other entertainment or art medium, are escapist fantasy. Our fantasies and fictions can tell us a lot about ourselves, but can never substitute for the real thing.

3D is best, because reality is only inferior to fantasy if we do not choose to make the most of our reality. Of course, Sturgeon's Law applies to women just as it does to anything else, so the key is to find a woman who makes the most of herself and her reality.

I feel like falling for a 2D character is about the same as falling for a 3D chacter in a movie. sure they'll always be perfect and all but can never be real. but then again there's nothing wrong with dreaming. right? ^^

Hmmm, hard question, but i will have to go with 3D. I guess everyone at some point has had a crush on someone that wasnt actually real, but as said before, they will never be real. Hmph, shame really ^_^.

I guess you have to make yourself say that from time to time, otherwise its a long, expensive, road back to reality.

Hmm, for me, i will have to go with San-Jigen. Although i love to see all the moe and kawai, as well as cool ni-jigen characters, at the end of the day, a real human would still come out on top (that phrase could be interpreted very wrongly xP)and also, if there is a really nice human, atleats you have a chance of meeting them, but manga/anime will have to stay fictional :(

However, if you get a nice San-Jigen to dress up as a Ni-Jigen, then you can get the best of both worlds xD

Uh, wow. Okay, true story. A while back, Momotato once said that the anime version of Yamamoto Maria-san in "Komugi-chan" is hotter than the real one. Ha ha ha!

Anyway, both have their ups and downs. 2D girls have the ideal personality. 3D girls have the fact that they're real. Either way, you can't get everything you want really. You can't become a drawing and you sure can't make a drawn girl become real. Oh and cosplayer can try to mimic the magic, but it will not do so in the end, even if you have someone like Hikami Kyouko-san cosplaying as Ellis. --'

3d.I mean, there's always a possibility to met a girl that looks like Aya Hirano than meeting a girl with powers like Suzumiya's.
