Japan smokes

I love living in Japan. I love it so much so that I *only* have one major complaint - everybody seems to smoke. OK - it may not be everybody but according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, you can see that around 60% of males in their thirties smoke (the green line at the top). The amount of female smokers is on the rise too but am surprised to see that the research shows that only 20% in their twenties smoke - seems like much more.
I do have friends who smoke all for different reasons but smoking is still advertised as being "cool". Theres no advertising on TV but its on billboards, trains etc. You even see typical macho men in a tight surfing suit with a board having a puff after riding a wave... @.@
One thing I liked about living in Seattle for a while was that all the cafes and restaurants were smoke free. I wanted to come back to Japan after lack-of-gundam-n-figure syndrome and said to myself that I chose to come back here so should not complain about the smoke. But its nice to complain once in a while...
Below: In a very rough nut shell - over 50% of men (in their 40's or younger) smoke and the percentage of women smokers is on the rise.

Not sure how Japan compares to the rest of the world when it comes to smoking. Surely Japan has a high percentage?

Had coffee in this cafe because I was told there was a non-smoking section. I sat at the table to the left of this pic and discovered that the smoking section was right next to me - the guy reading the paper in a suit. Most public cafes and restaurants are like this in japan and are laughable.
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

over here in Singapore I think most of the public places are not allowed to smoke, from the cafes to the bus-stops. But theres always a few fagarts that think they look cool by smoking in the restricted areas and making the rest suffer.
Our government does employ scare tactic to deter people to smoke. They print scary pictures of lung cancer, throat cancer and all sorts of scary diseases on the cigarette boxes, then they tax it real hard ... but still people smoke. LOL

Nah I don't smoke, its a personal choice, and I also made a promise to myself that I would not start, so I would not get addicted.
I have been around my grandmother (who smokes) so it is not bad in light amounts. If there is a bar really smoking up the place, for the sake of my healthy lungs I would not go in.
Im guessing Japan is a bit late in the world movement to restrict smoking. In the State of New Jersey, as far as I know it is illegal to smoke outside of your private property, or something to that accord. Most restauraunts here in Pennsylvania are also banning smoking, but you do get your "smoking or non-smoking" from waiters.
Honestly, I don't think it's cool at all, and the stuff about diseases and cancer is true. I wasn't scared into thinking smoking is bad, it's just something I never wanted to do =).

I don't smoke, because it's unhealthy, and even if I did want to smoke, I couldn't because I'm not 18 yet.
Maybe this will be the only thing I dislike about Japan.

It is rather funny how you depict things... Japan is usually well-known for having the best life expectancy rate on Earth. Still you say that a large number of people smoke. Surely Japan changes alot nowadays.
It would be interesting to study the impact of this and predict scenarios...
I never was interested in smoking, drinking or other deviant behaviors.
I guess and upon personal experience that social role models and long-term thinking on health (Think Cancer!) play an important role on personal choices.
Danny, will you choose this USB mask you told about us earlier? Or will you try to change some minds with the Darth Vader costume and his typical "asthmatic" voice?
At 3den: You're SO opportunistic. But if you think like this, maybe there won't be any good employers left there. LOL.
*sarcasm of the day*
At Alafista OTAKU: I have been to Singapore once to visit my relatives. Laws are so strict there it's crazy (the funniest being no chewing-gum in the subway). But I appreciate this a lot... So clean there. And yes, there will always be strange ones who will not observe rules, as always...

Before and after the 2000 Olympic Games, the Australian Government banned smoking in public areas and all restaurants. On the cigarette packets there are even health warnings with graphic images of the results of smoking. Although I don't know if that does any good but its a start. I don't mind smoking at all. I do it at time like when I'm stressed out or when going out I'm a casual smoker.
Also that Smoking Area looks awfully like the one outside Shibuya station, the one near that dog statue. I've been there and smoked there as well, lol.

Anyway, cigarettes are expensive in Singapore. You have to pay more than 600yen for a pack of smokes

There are actually some smokers that go out of their way so as to not bother you with the smoke but there are also some that doesn't care and just blows smoke in your face.
Primary reason why I don't like smoking and why I don't smoke is because it really smells bad and tastes even worse. :D

I'm a smoker and in Singapore, we smokers have to put up with some real idiots. As in Japan, we do have smoking and non-smoking sections at restaurants and coffeeshops. In fact, the smoking section is limited to only 20% of the total seating at the establishment. There have been cases where we get idiots who are non-smokers who sit IN the smoking section, and then complain, very loudly, of how they can't stand the smoke from cigarettes.
I don't about the rest of you guys, but I honestly think its ridiculous.

I need an air horn here in NYC so that can scare the sh*t out of smokers who blow smoke in ppl's faces, I can't stand it. my cubicle mate can leave his seat, go down 15 floors, have a butt, and return to his seat smelling just like smoke, disgusting.

I live in kentucky... the highest grossing legal export is tabacco (marijuana is our highest but is illegal). More than likely, the tobacco in the cigarettes being smoke by your friends was produce here or in one of the other tobacco producing states in the U.S. Although, I suppose they may have been produced in china...
The stuff is literally everywhere. I mean seriously growing everywhere you look. We have some of the highest smoking population numbers in the united states.
Even with all of that said, the percentages you listed are insanely high! You guys make Kentucky look like we're afraid of cigarettes!

I quit smoking four years ago. I have not had a single cigarette since I stopped, but every once in a while I do want one...but only because I think the smoke would be picturesque. Like a lot of people who quit, I just can't stand the smell of them anymore. Most of my friends still smoke though.

Interesting that we don't see a decrease in smoking in Japan. It's not only us Gaijin whom comment about cigarette smoke, but also Japanese. Many Japanese friend and colleagues have said they enjoy their time working here in the states. Usually I hear something to the effect that Japanese offices are not bad to work in if you can handle the smoke.

lol I must have gone through some japan smoking program cuz after my 1 week trip to Japan last year, I came back smoking. Not a heavy smoker though; last time I smoked was about a month ago.
Also when I was in Japan, a friend and I went to a maid cafe (I think mai:lish) after two days of searching and sat in a non smoking section. Funny thing was, we sat at a table that was right next to the smoking section just like you. The only indication of division between smoking and non-smoking was this little fence whose height was lower than the backs of the seats we were sitting in lol.

I smoked during my teens, stupid me. My dad died from lung cancer when I was still a baby, and my wife's mom just recently died from complications of her heart which in part was caused by her excessive smoking habit... I like it around here because there are laws against smoking restaurants and even bars. Back in Wisconsin it wasn't like that and I remember even the "non-smoking" sections were stuffy and hard to breathe in. Once you stop smoking after you've done it and it's completely out of your system (at least in my case) you become ultra-sensitive to cigarette smoke. I can smell it a mile away and it irritates my eyes, lungs and nose now. Never touch another cigarette for the rest of my life.

Well at least the japanese smoke at the right places. Here in the Philippines, they smoke wherever, whenever. Public transport, sidewalks, malls. Being a non smoker, it really annoys me.

Being a smoker... I do hate inconsiderate smoker, back at indonesia, they don't care whether their smoke affecting other people or not, when i saw those kind of people, i usually just cough hardly, in an exaggerated way, and then give the smoker a 'look', some still have the consideration and shame to stop, others stare back at me like they're trying to pick a fight.. lolol. I mean, I smoke, but i know it's bad and unfair to other people, that's why i try to be as discreet as i could
But here in Singapore... whew.. the restrictions are over the top!! You are not allowed to smoke in Parking lot ?! WTF?! The cars are all puffing theirs why can't i join in the party?!
I'm surprised though, for country like Japan and Singapore, where the price of tobaccos are "kick in the nut slash on the throat"-like, but the sheer number of smoker is still huge... Back at Jakarta, a pack of cigs cost about 1 USD, and that's the import brand (made in Indonesia, but imported brand like Marlboro or Lucky Strike), local brand (which foreigner loves!) usually cost around 60-70 cents. One funny thing i realize is, the most expensive mainstream cigarettes in Indonesia I've ever seen is somehow Mild Seven...

I don't smoke, never will. In fact it's an instant turn off if any female smokes.
I wonder if they smoke in Japan like how a lot of people smoke in the USA? With absolutely no regard for anyone around them. I see people not even trying to be courteous here to others.
Another perk is that if you smoke, most businesses give you extra break time. At least the military does and so do businesses in Oregon. So those who don't smoke get less break time. I know people who smoke just because of they more break time. =/

I didn't expect this to be a problem in Japan. The same situation you described ,Danny, is a daily routine for me, a convinced NON-SMOKER. There are so few public places where the distinction between smokers and nonsmokers areas is real...the smoke just flies in the air :(
As a positive example I would say Norway is the best place for nonsmokers! Smoking is prohibited in all indoor public places, one can only smoke outside (and I guess there are special places for that - I only stayed in Oslo for 3 days and I didn't see any of them, but I heard they exist)

sigh, i really dislike smoke, when i went to europe- everyone was smoking like chimneys, hell all over asia as well. anyways i live in ca and the smoking anti-smoking laws are excellent. there is something like one cannot smoke near certain establishments although i really believe they are not really enforced to my liking.
since i think smoking is a personal choice- keep it to yourself since there is no need for one to share that stuff with others

Smoking is a grand old tradition. I just don't do it.
Japanese guys are very centered on machismo and manliness and it's a male dominated society with none of the Wests feminized BS cultural castration obsession you see with western women so much lately. In the west, being manly and acting like a man is now seen by women as a bad thing, an undesirable trait linked to the old Colonialism and war and keeping women down. Now that it's all been reversed somewhat, men are becoming weak confused pussies and some are remembering why it's good to keep the men in charge. So smoke em if you got em guys, and blow the smoke in a ladies face. They're the ones killing everyone's fun anyway.

i'll never smoke. ever. my aunt smokes, she almost has a mans voice now. the price of cigarettes is just obscene as well. my parents spend possibly hundreds within a month or two on cigarettes and its just such a huge waste. i can only imagine the only companies not hit the hardest by the economic downturn is tobacco companies.

Yeah I can understand this issue. I hate it when smoker's are inconsiderate to others that don't smoke, but you can't blame them if a cafe allows them to smoke, then they'll smoke! IT just makes us non-smokers feel uncomfortable in such places. I believe that one day people should be forced to wear a helmet that covers one's full head and allowing them to smoke to their content without effecting others.

I smoke occassionally but not too much, around 1-2 sticks a day. I don't particularly like smoking when my companion/the person with me don't and when I'm in an enclosed and/or airconditioned place. It bothers other people and the smell sticks to your clothes.
