Gundam VS Starwars

For those who dont know, Google Trends is a tool that allows you to compare search volumes of particular keywords - a rough measure of popularity for a particular subject over a period of time.
Done a comparison of Gundam vs Starwars (in Japanese) to find Gundam being far more popular - no surprises here. I then done a search for the same terms in English expecting to find Starwars being much more popular than Gundam and was surprised to see that the difference was trivial (see graph below). Gundam it seems has gained much ground outside of Japan too.

I grew up on Starwars but only discovered Gundam recently a few years back. Starwars comes and disappears for a few years - maybe the new TV series will bring the fever back? Gundam however seems to always be alive - theres always Gundam-something going on (Gunota is the best source).
A tough decision but for now its Gundam for me. The idea of Piloting a Mobile Suit is just too cool ^^;

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Gundam category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

I'll side Gundam all the way! My first series was Gundam Wing, after that, I follow up all the new series. Never interested in Starwars in anyway, beside keeping tracks of Danny's Stormtroopers appearance ^^.

Whilst I consider myself to be a Star Wars buff, if I had to choose between piloting a X-Wing or a Gundam (any of them [except for "Turn-A"]) I'd choose Gundam hand-down. I mean, they DO FLY, they DO HAVE LASERS plus they got ARMS AND LEGS and look cooler.

On the other hand, if I had to choose between Stormtrooper or ZEON uniform...
    I'd go Stormtrooper!

I've been under the Gundam spell ever since I watched the original series some 27-28 years ago. I certainly would not have predicted that it would stay popular for so long, but I suppose its longevity has helped to justify my continual affection of the series (along with all those fabulous models and toys, of course).

BTW, Gundam Seed Destiny just started to air in Canada yesterday.

This one's a tough one for me because I grew up loving Star Wars and I still love it, especially the Luke trilogy and the expanded universe (Mara Jade would've been awesome to see in a Star Wars movie). However, after I saw Gundam Wing when it first aired here in the US on Cartoon Network, I've been a Gundam junkie. I'll go with Gundam solely based on the fact that I have 10X more Gundam merchandise in my house than Star Wars merchandise.

I'll go with Gundam solely based on the fact that I have 10X more Gundam merchandise in my house than Star Wars merchandise.

Am going to have to go with Star Wars here.I've been a Star Wars geek since i was a kid,so it holds a special place in my life. I love Gundam as well but it isn't my favourite anime franchise of all time, Votoms has the honor of being my all-time favourite anime.

I'll have to admit...I'm a dinosaur...I saw "The" original trilogy on silver screen when I was just an brat ...back in '77...which led to a "severe" case of "imperial feveriosis collectibillis"..by the way ..there's no cure!
    I'm also a "Trekkie"....

    I'm lost, completely bonkers.

@Matt: Yes I know it's tragic, but Gundam Wing seems to be the starting point for most non-Japanese Gundam fans. I think this is most likely because of its ease of accessibility.
Gundam newbies probably start with SEED these days.

Was neber a Star Wars fan, so the choice is simple.

Anyway Gundam ripoff quite a few ideas from Star Wars, Newtypes = Jedis, Beam Sabers = Light Sabers and so on.

When I was young, I like Battlestar Galatica alot lot more than Star Wars cos I find the designs of Star Wars stuff rather unappealing, it was only until the appearance of AT-AT and Tie Interceptor that kindered some interest in the Star Wars Saga, but those Ewoks killed it, LOL.

Well, as a kid - I was dead into Star Wars, but it all strikes me as a bit daft and simplistic now.

Gundam on the other hand, has consistently held my attention and given me food for thought on a variety of levels (... yeah, even Wing ^^). Easy decision then, eh ?

This is an unfair poll, I'm a big fan of Star Wars and Gundam.

Ever since I found some old video tapes of star wars when I was about 11 or 12 I became nuts about Star Wars buying all Pc video games and stuff.

About Gundam, I used to watch transformers way before I found out about star wars so I've always been a big fan of huge robots. Unfortunaly not even a single series of gundam ever went on air in my country so I never knew about Gundam only seen a few pictures. After finding Dannychoo.com I became addicted to gundams and its model kits ^^

Well i love both Star Wars and Gundam.

Kinda wished that Star Wars had mobile suit type robot vehicles. The closest one they had on two legs was the "Chicken Walker" and it was nothing like a Gundam, twas more like..well...a chicken. X_x

Might have been cool too If Darth Vader had a Gundam, a black one, like let's say...something like the GAT-X105E Strike Noir.

Imagine Luke Skywalker and Darh Vader having a duel using their Gundams. ^_^

    ok *wonders where to start*

@Marauder: I agree where you said Gundam Wing is like the starting point of non-japanese Gundam fans. Back in the day while in high school I started collecting Gundam Wing wallpaper, I was totally oblivious to GUNDAM until I found pictures of Wing Zero & the endless Waltz custom which have always been my first love no matter how many more Gundams are out there (Strike freedom comes second)So I started looking for anime scripts from Gundam Wing & I found some, a year after that I went to hong kong & I was progressive hunting every anime store for the box set which I managed to secure... My dad being a bit of an A-hole made me leave the 2nd box set, I had to wait a good nother or 2 before I finally completed the boxed set. I have also seen some of the older starwars movies & stuff, I like darths cape & stuff but asside from that, its not really appealing to me at all. I can watch it & I wont complain but Its not something that Im completely interested in....

this is not a bias'd comment. I have an 8mb broadband connection with almost 200Gigs of what I hope to be every single gundam series every made. if not then it will be soon.

Ive seen most series's of gundam including seed & seed destiny, F91, Zeta, G Gundam, V gundam, ZZ, 0080. to name but a few. I have a lot more.

so a 'COMPLETELY' no bias comment....*ahem*

@Marauder: I agree where you said Gundam Wing is like the starting point of non-japanese Gundam fans. I wasnt really into either one until some years back when Kotor came out. Thats when everything began. I watched the new trilogy after and watched IV V VI later on. But for some reasons, the old trilogy didnt interest me much, the new ones are far better IMO (yes, many pple will disagree with me on this).

Gundam? I didnt really like wing, SEED was pretty good IMO (most people will disagree here too). I heard the original Gundam (1979?) is the best by far... anyone agree/disagree?

My only actual experience with a Gundam anime was with Gundam Wing on Cartoon Network, which I thought was crap.
Kinda put me off watching any more gundam stuff, so for me, its Star Wars, even though im not totally crazy about that either...
Gundam robots are nicely designed, but they all look the same to me after a while...

I remember braving a snow storm to see Star Wars when it first appeared on the big screen. Of course it took me a few years before I really understood the story fully. Like most of the guys I grew up with, it was all we could talk about.

Sometime after that a family friend asked me if I had seen a Japanese program called Mobile Suit Gundam. Well, everything was different from that point forward.

I guess I would say Gundam is my favorite.

Didnt like the look for Gundam Wing when I first saw the stills but got into it after actually watching it.

Well Gundam is always as good as Starwars. Yah your right if StarWars was made into an anime (Well if George Lucas would permit making his masterpiece as an anime) we could see the dark side moving again. I think what makes the Gundam still strong is its growing franchise and an ongoing anime. If Gundam stops making anime it would suffer the same faith as Starwars did. Well I guess the darkside is really loosing the battle here ... :)

I used to love Star War alot and collected quite a lot of "figures and vehicles" I even thought of getting my own lightsaber!!!

But when I saw the Gundam F91 model (i think it was the larger scale model on display) next to the anime, I dived into the world of Mobile suits and after getting into more Gundam wing then later Gundam Seed there was no turning back from this franchise for me...

I want to play Gundam Musou on PS3 and Pilot a Mobile Suit (If I ever Could)^^

Star Wars all the way. Gundam has cool mobile suits but those cool designs aren't consistent throughout other aspects of the show. They managed to make mobile suits but small arms weapons and infantry actually seem worse then what we have today. Every aspect of Star Wars is top quality, the worlds, the ships, the droids, the support vehicles, the troops and the characters. You don't have that with Gundam and its animated so it should have the advantage.

Star Wars is also far more original. Even the prequals have original designs. Gundam on the other hand, even when it was original it borrowed stuff from Star Wars: star destroyer like warships, deathstar like super weapons, jedi and sith like new types and coordinators. After Gundam Wing, most of the Gundam franchise stopped innovating all together. I do like Gundam, but this is like comparing Jesus to his followers.

Gundam Wing is the only series I watched back in the 90s (before it was subbed in English and the opening/closing themes were removed =_=). Deathscythe Hell whoo~! <3

[edit] I mean, GWing is the only Gundam series I've ever watched and I watched it back in the 90s before it was aired on Cartoon Network. ^^; [/edit]
