Vista Bento

So whats it like working for Microsoft then? Well apart from the great views, MS also provide us with food in the form of a Bento if a meeting is scheduled during lunch time - which is why everybody likes to schedule meetings at 12 ^^;
A Bento is a basically a small box stuffed with rice and other offerings of grub. I was going to talk about Japanese food today but noticed my Vista laptop and thought I would babble on about that instead.

Been using Vista at work for about 3 weeks now. Despite what many have said, Vista is not that much of a system hog. It seems to boot faster than XP and Aero works well on a very average spec machine (1GB memory). The system does take ages to wake up though - enough time to go and get a cuppa tea.
As I dont really use my work machine for much more than corporate life (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Powerpoint and Powerpoint from time to time), I dont notice that much difference from XP apart from eye candy and a feature which makes the screen go black every time you click on an exe file @.@

I'm personally in no rush to upgrade my PCs at home as I only use them for number crunching - XP is fine for that. My main machine is Mac OSX ^^
Have you/will you upgrade to Vista?

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

wow! that's one big bento box XD

i'll rather wait before i'll install Vista into my machine 'coz MS might release some major patches and fixes like what happened to XP during its first launch ^^

but hey, i'm still going to stick to my win2k machine. if it ain't broken (or supported in this case), then why bother upgrading, right? ^^

I'm probably gonna upgrade my computer before I upgrade to Vista. XP is running everything fine for me for the time being, so I'll wait until updates for XP are no longer supported before upgrading. LOL but the way they advance things, by then Vista might already be obsolete.

I really hope my next computer is a Mac Mini cause I'm tired of using buggy windows and have been using Linux for some time now. So upgrading to vista is not in my plans any time soon.

I've read in a few websites that Vista did steal ideas from Mac OS X like gadgets and other stuff.

Danny, Is Mac Mini a good machine for an Apple newbie?

    CURSES ALL YOU MAC FANBOYS!!!

Wait that includes me too... ^^; oops...

No I will wait on Vista too, Windows XP is still useful for me. I don't really need the Vista eye candy or the want-a-be-mac-user features. Saying that I will probably decide to go out and get it next week. ^^; Just kidding again...

    For all the zealots out there I have nothing against Windows, I used it for years. I just prefer OSX as my primary OS. I have a nasty habit of wanting to get work done. ^^;

I struggled with the decision of buying a new wintel box after my VAIO decided to die in the middle of a Skype conversation. In the end I installed Windows XP under boot camp and use parallels.

I still have access to a full running XP install if needed and I use my XP applications right in OSX. Actually, the new version of parallels will allow me to run Windows apps right on my OSX desktop like they where native OSX apps.

I just love to do this at work. I can be so evil. My Windows only colleague do a double take when they see IE7 running on a Mac desktop. Later comes WTF when they realize its not a trick but IE7 is running on OSX. If it's a visitor to our office I look them in the eyes and with a straight face and tell them, "Did you hear? Steve bought Microsoft yesterday...

I'm in no rush to upgrade, XP has been running fine for me. I'll probably go for a Mac to replace my PowerBook that died in an unfortunate dynamics test. With Bootcamp and Parallels available, I think Macs offer a great solution.

Glad you didn't make that picture any larger, I'd probably be speeding towards my favorite Japanese restaurant right now.

Danny, I just thought you should know that you are partially responsible for me switching to Mac recently. I have enjoyed seeing your pics and hearing you talk about them so I decided to bite. I have been using a Macbook Pro for 2 weeks now and am loving it. I put my smelly, loud Dell PC in the closet. That thing sounded like a jet engine when it was running.
Oh, BTW, how about updating us on your "Mac Life"? In recent pics I noticed you had an ACD and that nice looking Logitech keyboard/mouse set.
I hope they do a bluetooth version of that set, even though the mouse is designed for right handed people, and not us lefty folk.

I was a beta tester--right out of the bat the system would take half a gig, which worried me. iTunes definitely did not work with me--it would refuse to play any and all purchased songs. It would also ask questions about EVERYTHING. Aero, I found it to be rather unspectacular rather than as a silver bullet.

Yeah, I won't upgrade until it is absolutely necessary.

    I upgraded just last month.
In my opinion, vista isn't that much different from XP which is a good thing because XP users pick up Vista in less than 30 min.
I got it for the overall visual upgrade. It also handles multi-languages very nicely. Interesting fact:did u know that if you use Korean as default, the logo changes to "Windows Vista K"? it's got to do with some international fair trade agreement ruling.

I just installed the Vista Upgrade Advisor but it kept 'encountering a problem'. This does not inspire me with much confidence (although, if MS sent me a bento that might swing it). I have a friend that does testing for MS, we're going to restore my backup to a spare drive and then upgrade that one with Vista and see how it goes.

I love this site! keep up the top-drawer work!

I use all three major operating system lines.

Vista seems to be the only one, though, that requires users to be driven bat-crap insane in the name of security. I say this during my process of attempting to do some basic networking and filesharing and porting an application to it.

Maybe Vista will eventually do something useful, but all it is for the time being is a tremendous headache for me.

I am completely Microsoft free (sorry, Danny) and loving it. So for me, Vista isn't something I have to deal with except at work. All my computers at home are Macs now. And when OS 10.5 comes out soon, I will definitely upgrade to that.

I have Vista on 3 machines at work and 3 at home. I haven't had any of the drama that people describe, but usually the people I hear it from haven't actually used it so its no wonder there is such a big descrepency. I'm usually an early adopter and my job required Vista before RTM, so I don't really expect everyone else to do the same.

    Vista? No, Tnks!!!
I've tested Vista for my company. Many problems of compatibility (HW & SW). Ex: Some UMTS cards don't work, the beta drivers crash. Personally, I'll wait for at least 6 months...
