Lucky Star Matsuri

Its nearing the end of Summer and there is a load of matsuri (festivals) taking place here n there.
This is a picture of a Shinyo [神輿] - it typically weights over 100kg and is carried by loads of folk while bouncing it up n down during the matsuri. The Japanese Wikipedia explains it to be a transport for the gods while other entries explain it to be a vessel for ghosts.
Yunakiti has more pics and a Niconico video of this Lucky Star Shinyo being carried by 120 LS fans.
You be no surprised that this matsuri took place at Washinomiya Shrine. This years festival was attended by 50,000 people - an increase of 20,000 from last year according to Sankei.
There will be a Matsuri around my area this weekend - will take pics.

I visited the Washinomiya shrine on my last trip to Japan. At the shrine where those wooden plaques hang with something written on it, there are quite a lot with a picture of one of the Lucky Star characters on it (took pictures of that). And I got a picture of my with that black marble plate at the entrance.
Hmm, wanted to link to a post on my blog about it, but seems like I (still) haven't put any pictures in that post yet ^^

I just wonder, this are the equivalent of religion in Japan, how can they let anime get into it?
http://www.sankakucomplex.com/
Remember, what the Japanese (and many other Asians) would consider their "religion" does not fall in neatly at all with us Westerners' ideas about it. If anything, Japanese would think weirdly of this as being more a bizzare change to an ancient Japanese tradition, not a necessarily a religious one.
Alternatively you could just say your religion is "Haruhiism" or"Otakuism" and call this a sacred rite ^_^

Went to the shrine in February just after a smaller festival (didn't know about it), and there were a large number of Lucky Star and Haruhi prayer plaques posted there, as well as a car totally plastered with Lucky Star itasha in the car park.
Sadly, on the afternoon we went none of the restaurants in the area were open, so we could only take pictures of the Lucky Star menus in the windows.
