Japanese point cards title=

After living in Japan for a while, you'll notice the amount of reward/point cards that start to build up in your wallet. Some of them are worth carrying around like the Bic Camera and Sakuraya cards. Both of these stores sell electrical goodies and give you up to 19% of the purchase price charged to your point card (its usually 10% tough).
The catch is that you have to spend the points at their store though which is fine by me.

Speaking of Bic Camera and Sakuraya, if you are a visitor to Japan and buying stuff from these stores, if you show them your short stay visa in your passport, you will be tax exempt - so get 5% off (in cash) and use their point cards to get another 10% off (in points).
If you are a resident here and have your gaijin ("Gaijin" is the Japanese word for "foreigner") friend staying at your house, drag them to the nearest Bic Camera or Sakuraya and force them to show their passport when you want to buy something expensive and you wont have to pay tax on that item. You have to make out that the item is for your friend though. If your friend refuses then just chuck them out of your house.

Back to the point cards. While some of these cards are worth carrying around, most are a load of crap like, "spend 10,000 yen and get 10 yen to spend on anything you want." I cant be bothered with those but my wife loves point cards - these are just some of hers ^^;

When I was living in the UK over 8 years ago, I had a Tesco point card that gave me a penny for every ten pounds I spent. hmmmm. generous.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

Sounds like a nice duty-free system to me. They look like fidelity cards too...

Not much else to say tonight.

It's always nice to see some specific things from Japan and sometimes more broadly, Asia.

I don't have any point cards. They never seemed real successful around the area where I live so most businesses don't bother with them.

Never really used one since we don't do it so often here in Houston. I just voted 1-5 for the chance I probably used one but didn't know it. :P

BTW, that's a lot of point cards. XD

I technically have two point cards, but one is actually just an Arcade (Gameworks) card that gives a discount after you purchase X amount of points.

Other than that, it's hard to find good reward programs aside from sketchy credit card rewards.

Hrm, in my country the cards you get are mainly "buy 2 get 1 free" in store, but then you get points added to the card, and you get a money-back voucher at the end of every month, that depends on how many points you have...

Although, they are very uncommon here, I can only think if 2 stores that do this.

    lol... 10 yen off :O

Ive got 2 or 3 point cards for various games & DVD shops, but i always find them cheaper on websites like Amazon or play.com. If i had a points card for them, id save even more dough!

Yeah, I agree most point cards here are pointless. You literally get a card from every shop you enter! I have a crapload that amounts to the thickness of yellow pages! That said, I only carry around 8-ish. But these 8 are the plastic type therefore they make my wallet seem huge even though I only have ¥1,000 in there!

I think that point cards generally give you about 1% back. Though some are much better value.

For instance Ootoya gives you a free meal for every 15 points. And you get 1 point per meal (sometimes more).

And Denny's gives you ¥500 off 5 points. Where you get 1 point per kids meal, which are around ¥500. So that's about 10%. And sometimes they give you more stamps that they should have :)

Point cards are generally worth having for things you frequent often, or will spend a lot of money at.

There's an article about Japan's obsession with point card back in May last year which you might find interesting.

I used to carry around a lot, but I never actually filled them up, so they were pointless. Now I just carry around a movie point card. I've gotten 2 free movies and free drinks/popcorn with it.
