Bees and Fire attack Monk

A monk tried to burn a bees nest with a bamboo stick lit with fire. The bees didn't quite like that and attacked the monk causing him to flee and drop the bamboo stick.
The fire from the bamboo spread throughout his shrine and left behind it 130 sq meters of ash.
The monk suffered burns but as you can see is still alive.

One of the comments at Itai News is "jigo jitoku" [自業自得] which is used when a person brings calamity upon himself for his own doing - I learnt that word from the manga Ranma and is often used in anime.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

I guess the closest concept to jigo jitoku in America is the Darwin Awards, where they showcase people dumb enough to accidentally kill or render themselves infertile in entertaining ways, thereby aiding evolution by removing themselves from the gene pool.

Trying to kill bees with freakin' fire is dumb as bricks, but isn't quite funny enough to make the Darwin Awards.

I was reading this story yesterday. It's unfortunate yet a bit funny. He was actually trying to get rid of a nest of hornets, likely the Asian Giant Hornet which are prevalent in certain regions of Japan, and not bees. In actuality the monk was lucky to get burns instead of being stung as the venom from this wasp proves to be deadly especially if in multiples let alone a whole hive.

Killing bees with fire is best done if you have gasoline or some other highly flamable liquid as well, that way the bees actually all die at once instead of killing a few and getting the rest singed and really pissed off. Also, spraying gas on the nest first will make them woozie. But with this guy's luck, he'd have just lit the shrine on fire anyways, just without the bee stings. Of course, the best way is to just gas them with raid or something if they are near a structure. I guess my being partly raised in the countryside is showing, lol, I was taught how to do these kind of things for myself.

    Aoch! That must have hurt!

Here you're not allowed to exterminate bee nests, you have to call upon the fire department or a beekeeper who will remove and relocate the nest. (Due to the ciritcally important role bees play in pollinating.)
Wasp or hornet nests on the other hand you are allowed to exterminate... however here too some specialist help is advised.
