Not only is McDonanlds Japan a place for great fast food and viruses, Its also a great place to take a nap when you are plastered from a late nights work. There are always people sleeping in McDonalds over here. Speaking of sleeping in public, Josh posted his collection of pics that he took of people sleeping here there and everywhere around Japan – a must see.

Apart from people sleeping, you will also find students studying with text books and stationary all over the gaff.
Another interesting thing about McDonalds is that when you walk in, you will often see somebodys bag just left on a seat or a table – it’s the owners way of saying “this is my seat – don’t even think about it.” They walk in, leave their bag where they want to sit and then go to order their food. The interesting thing is that if they tried this back in my home town Hackney London, they will come back to find the contents of their bag all over the table or just plain gone!
Come to think of it, being Hackney and all, the owner could come back to find some vomit or skiddy pants among their belongings.

on some mcdonalds (mcdo) branches we do that ^^

and mcdo in japan does look like a cafe than your usual average fastfood chain

I agree to that too. Mcdonald's in front of the university will do since some well-to-do have body guards safe enough.

But sleeping? Even if it's in a higher-end place, I only find that in Starbucks for sure :P

If someone's left their bag on a seat in any restaurant/ bar here, its generally left alone. You tend to find that generally, people further North in the UK have much better manners that those further South (Excepting chavs of course!). No offence Danny!!

Here in Canada you could probably leave stuff at a table. Depends on where you are. In smaller towns you totally do it, larger places like Montreal or Toronto, maybe not.

I've never seen anyone sleeping, although you could probably find people on the floor in abdominal pain from the gut rot that Rotten Ronnies gives you. Is the food that bad over in Japan too?

    They really look tired~

I tend not to lose time when eating in a fast-food restaurant. People would not let you sleep if it was crowded anyway.
Starbucks, on the other hand, are designed for people to enjoy some free time, and it's a way better approach to business.

Even if I'm not a fan of McDo (I prefer BK and some others) and rarely eat fast-food anyway, they still make excellent Deli sandwiches here. So I would go there once in a blue moon...

y'know, I still can't grasp the concept of sleeping at McDonalds.

Especially someone actually wanting to rest their head on the table...or anywhere in McDonalds really.

I don't know if it's the same over there in Japan, but here in Seattle, McDonalds has the same amount of Germs as a...thing with alot of Germs

It's always so pleasant that everything old is new again in Japan. I always stay out of Mickey Ds here, get sick every time I eat in one. My fiancee enjoys eating there though. Hmm... I've never asked her what she thinks of マクド here in the U.S.

Anyway, I wouldn't dare sleep in a Mickey Ds here in the states or leave anything unattended on a table. Heck, you probably would be robbed and then killed because you didn't have enough money.

    Maybe it's included in the Japanese genome. That ability to sleep anywhere comfortably, and wake up at the right time. ^^;

    Maybe it's included in the Japanese genome. That ability to sleep anywhere comfortably, and wake up at the right time. ^^;

There is no way to sleep in McDo in France. As for UK, the worst thing would happen to you and your belonging. One custom here, is that when you need to go to toilets in a town where there are no public toilets, you go to McDo. It is so usual that in Paris there is a code to enter toilets. This code is given on your purchase receipt....
BTW, When I was in Taipei, I noticed that this toilet custom was the same with taiwanese !

It's the same thing here in the Philippines. I find a lot of people sleeping in McDo. Also same with the bag thing. You don't have to worry about your belongings being stolen or something (although just to be on the safe side its best to just bring it with you).

hmm sleeping in Mcdonalds will most likely get you woken up and ushered out by the staff in Sydney. Although i guess studying there would be alright unless you become extremely noisy.

to sleep in a McDO = to be "gently escorted" out..
to mark your seat = "do you really want to get rid of your stuff????"
Don't even think about it....however it may just work once..depending on your luck!!
As the matter of going to the gents...usually you go after your meal, when you're leaving...
Now looking at those pics........mmhh sounds silly, ...but must be quite fun to take a nap there....I'll write that down on my "what-to-do-list-when-I'll-be-there-this-year".
Oh and the pics posted by by Josh are great.....thanks.

I personally after I moved from Europe to USA try to avoid McDonald. It’s so ugly here and food is bad. From 6 years living here, I been to MC only one time and never again. I have never seen people sleeping in MC yet, and I hope they won't because their soul will be stolen by the evil McDonald. I have seen people study in small not chain food places around my college and that is very common. I mean book stores now have coffee shops and everything.

I guess in Finland you'd be kicked out for sleeping in McDonalds (mäkkäri). Besides the meals are bad and expensive so it's a miracle anyone even wants to spend time eating there and not in one of the local Hesburgers.

Bags? Mm.. I guess normally you could leave them there for a while. You should check out the kind of people sitting inside before doing that though.

I often notice salarymen taking power naps at Excelsior or Starbucks during lunchtime. Even more than people sleeping in restaurants, though, I've seen lots of people who crash in internet cafes.

Most are among the working poor, not enough money to afford a home, but at least enough that they don't have to sleep on the street. They come to the cafes since the all-night rate is pretty cheap, they get a comfy chair, and they can grab a quick shower and cup of coffee in the morning before they head out.

You can usually spot them because they come into the cafe with a really big bag or suitcase, although some of the are clean cut enough that they don't immediately stand out as being homeless.

Other than that, occasionally guys come stumbling in because they're drunk or missed the last train, and the net cafe is cheaper than a hotel.

LOL, sleeping in McD's in Brazil... you'd probably wake up naked and about to be raped or something. :P

Also, leaving bags anywhere alone here is just stupid... you'd most probably get robbed (like in Hackney).

People also don't study on McD's here... mainly because it's kinda rare to see people studying out in the open... or anywhere else for that matter. But McD's are usually noisy places with tons of uneducated kids with moronic obese parents... which is just sad.

Depends on the Mcdo you go to here I guess. I personally would leave my bag but my ever cautious friends say nay. So in the end someone is left alone at the seat waiting for his order as the others get theirs and his...

That has to be one of the nicest looking McDonalds in Japan, so you guys shouldn't think that all of them are like that, most of them look like the cheap fast food restaurants they are.

Sometimes there are also homeless, they would buy something cheap and stay all night, at least in the 24h ones.

Depending on the time and the place they can be packed with very noisy school kids or very quiet and almost empty, but even here in Japan I wouldn't dare to leave my stuff unchecked.

If you added 'possibly dead' to the poll above, I may have voted that way.

Urban McDonald's are always 'interesting' to say the least. The one outside the Seattle ferry terminal in downtown -- go figure -- Seattle is a serious view into human de-evolution.

The last McDonald's I even grabbed something to 'eat' -- think 'eating' has to involve actual food though -- was outside the FBI building in Washington DC, back when they allowed guided tours through the building. Safe to say that was a long time ago.

I've never seen anybody sleeping in Mc over here. It's quite amusing to see such ppl in Japan. What is more interesting imo is the fact that no one is disturbing their sleep. Mcs over here are always so crowded and noisy.

It should be noted that the McDonald's in Japan usually have a sign somewhere in the store (especialy in nightlife located McD's such as Shibuya and Shinjuku) that prohibit studying, sleeping, etc.

They do seem to be lax on the enforcement.

Trivia for the day: in 関西 (Kansai; western Japan i.e. Ōsaka), the nickname for McDonalds's in まくど (makudo). In 関東 (Kantō; eastern Japan i.e. Tōkyō), it's マック (makku), like the computer.

Here you won't see people sleeping in McD but them hogging to the seats for free wifi+free power for whole day web-surfing. Which begs me to wonder what can they be doing in the net whole day long? But people sleeping in parks are common and recently there was a report that someone was fine by the authorities for sleeping in the park when he was apparently just taking a short wink and shelter over the rain that had fallen earlier.

Here, our Mcdonalds don't even come close to this Mcdonalds. Every furniture piece is cheap and here really isn't somewhere where you would want to take a nap. The Mcdonalds in this photo looks more like a Boston Stoker(coffee shop in town). Good point about people leaving their bags unattended because you can't do that here without worrying about if somebody went through your things.

Oh god... We've had this happen at the Mc.Dee's I work at. We've had people fall asleep, study, hold business meetings, almost anything that cna be done in our store. Whats weirds is we got a bunch of tourists direct from Japan in one day and they did the same thing with their bags. My coworkers were all like "What the hell?" It was funny because they couldnt figure out how to get the people attention so i'm standing in the back with microphone headset on while they have reciever in their ear giving them directiosn on how to greet them. Needless to say they spoke almost fluent Engrish, but still we tried to make their experience as welcomeing as possible. They took pictures with us even! We went from being workers to site seeing attractions in under an hour.

Mickey D's (as we call it) where I live isn't super popular. In the mornings, it's where all the older people go to drink coffee and read newspaper. In-N-Out is by far the most popular hamburger joint in the area. The Mickey D's sounds a lot like the Starbucks around here (people sitting there studying and stuff).

Given the fact that McDonalds tables in Holland aren't that clean (mostly sticky), I wouldn't even dare to rest my head on such a table, let alone sleep on it! That's why I never saw and probably won't see anyone sleeping in a Dutch McDonalds. Besides that, it's never quiet enough to get some good rest.

I would love to be able to catch a snooze at a McD or any fast food place. But I think most fast food employees will ask you to leave. Most places have an unsolicited rule about loitering. They are afraid they will attract vagrants and street people especially close to the downtown core.

I used to be able to sleep anywhere... including church... ;). The first thing I do a work is to check out the best place to sleep is. I would just prefer to nap over eating lunch. Anyhow at my new work.. there is not really anyplace to sleep. So I resort to go back to my vehicle if I want to nap. The only problem right now is that it gets really cold in the winter...my car is like an ice box. In the last two weeks, the temperature has dropped to below -30c. Oh well...must drink more bad coffee to stay awake :(

    Normal people in my country don't sleep at McDonald's but I certainly do sometimes ^^ and yes, people usually laugh @.@javascript:loadCommentForm('bottom',%20731);

i´ve never seen people sleeping at mc donalds. The chairs & tables should be very uncomfortable.

In my hometown, people who would leave their bags in the seat would me meaningless, I mean even myself, I if I see a bag in a seat I would just move it aside and seat there, I wouldn´t steal anything though.
I found really intersting the fact that McDonald´s its used for studying over night hehe.

I love McDonalds in Japan for one simple reason... Cinnamon Melts - anyone who's tried them should agree they are the best!
