National Go Topless Day

A few Japanese blogs are picking up on National Go Topless Day who say...

as long as men can be topless, constitutionally women should have the same right, or men should also be forced to wear something hiding their chest.

and...
Currently, women who dare to be topless in public in the US are repeatedly being arrested, fined, humiliated, criminalized.
On Aug 23rd, 2008, topless women will rally in great numbers across the USA to protest this gross inequality in the law and will demand that they be granted the fundamental right to be topless where men already enjoy that right according to the 14th amendment of the Constitution (please see our exact legal argument on the right to be topfree for women under "14th amendment" in the column on the right.)

What do you think about all of this - good or bad idea? I can imagine that there will be an increase of traffic accidents if more women start to walk around with their bare eyes showing.
Decided to post this pic from Gelbooru instead of the naked women taht you can see from the rally at Heaven and Go Topless. Via Itai News.

national go topless day should be banned for all period...that will solve all these "inequality" issues...seriously...why would women go topless on the streets?

maybe not on the streets. maybe it would be better to just restrict toplessness, regardless of sex, to certain places. ie. a guy walking down the street without a shirt on, or at he supermarket, or in an office building, is just... creepy. at the beach, or a pool, or while playing a sport or something, completely normal. if women wanted to do so as well, it would be weird at first, but eventually (and we're talking DECADES down the line) it would become acceptable (girls are allowed to wear pants now, are they not? 100 years ago, they'd be called deviants).

I say change the law. Most of Eurpoe's fine with it, time for America to pull the stick out of its ass.

I completely agree with skoffs. I hardly ever see guys walking around topless anywhere but a pool or near a beach and I don't see why women can't do the same (assuming they'd want to). I mean there is clearly a stigma with doing such a thing here today but when you think about it the amount of cloth required to "cover" a woman's breast today is hardly leaving anything to the imagination and I believe that over time being female and being topless would be considered normal.

This is more like just demanding IMO. Being topless may bring dangers towards them. Maybe not to much in the western countries but in the eastern countries where the women are usually more clothed will cause quite some disasters if the men are to see that many women up the street topless.

That's what happens when retarded believe that they can think.
The deeper they try to think the more stupid ideas they have.
I think they believe they can change the world with their 'smart philosophy'.
My question is how many woman would benefit of this law change? and how many others would be against it? I guess the second group would be way bigger.

In my home city (Austin, TX), women are allowed to go topless. It's in the laws - women can be as topless as men.

It causes no more problems than anything else does. Neighbors sometimes complain about a woman mowing her lawn topless, but then again, neighbhors complain about anything. Neighbors are the worth thing you can have living next to you.

I'm all for equality. Either allow women to go topless, or allow no one to be topless. I for one do not want to see hairy, fat mantits, and cringing in revulsion at seeing that causes as many problems as looking at a lovely pair of breasts would.

The girls in the picture look like Sayuri and Mai from Kanon . . . ahhh, I can only dream.

And even if toplessness was allowed for all genders, I still wouldn't want to walk around half-naked. Bras are meant for support, they're not representatives of gender inequality. -_-;; Some ladies take feminism too far; it's good that we have equal rights but there are biological differences that cannot be ignored - I mean, breasts are more highly sexualized than man boobs, it'll still be a shocking sight even if toplessness is "legal". On a tangent note, women should be allowed to breast feed in public, because you have to take care of your kids no matter where you are.

Of course for everything that's beauty there's always the ugly side. Women don't choose to have beautiful or ugly breasts (of course now they can if they have money) just as much no one choose to be born with a deformed face. There's always pros and cons on everything but here there's the choice to show or not to show, it should depend on women not in some stupid law but there should be places to do it, it's "embarrassing" (for me) to see a woman showing her breasts on the street instead of a beach as is for men to walk without a shirt on the street it's disrespectful

you what the biggest pitfall of feminism? It's because they ask for equal rights...literal equality and yet~ I stress~~ they demand for a seat in the subway or to be given priority in other stuff. But hello, feminists are demanding for equal rights and other people have the same equal right not to give up their seat if we analyze the demand.

I think rather than lobbying themselves over the right to be naked. I think they should first lobby respect for women. Without it, they bare their bodies and then they'll rally for exploitation when people begin to enjoy the sight. Isn't it a twisted logic?

Personally, I think there should be a limit to where tasteful nakedness should end and begin. I don't mind going topless if I know *all* men have enough decency. I mean if we can solve the problem of religious/moral/ethical or whatever code that says this and that, then probably the proposal will win for all.

The only reason why female breasts get the attention they do is because of the fact that it's forced to be hidden all the time. It's kind of like a movie for example, the first few times you see it, it's exciting but after you seen it so many time it's appeal declines. So in other words, if females could be topless all the time, odds are eventually it'll get to the point where it's really not a big deal at all.

I don't see anything morally or legally wrong with women being topless in public, I just think its a bad idea. For one it could bring unwanted attention to women.

It makes it easier for sexual harassment charges to be made. (ie. "that creepy guy was staring at me officer", "that man touched my breast") That last example can be an innocent situation. If a woman has decent sized eyes and they are not supported and held back by a bra, someone could easily brush up against them in public with out intending to, such as trying to navigate a crowded area.

I wouldn't mind if women walked around topless more often, they should make sure they know what they might be getting themselves into beforehand.

If women are allowed to be topless legally, they might lose the power they have over guys by showing some skin.

I for one would be uncomfortable walking around topless. I guess its not really something I'm used to, but I really don't think women should be able to wander around topless. Er last I knew a woman's breasts were considered a sex organ. Guys should keep theirs in their pants when in public, girls should keep theirs in their shirts and panties.

Though for the most part you can't walk into a store without a top on. "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service." Though that leaves the pants... NO PROBLEM!

I guess it would depend on who you are asking. They are sexualized though. Since a womans breasts are sexualized and mens pecs are generally not it would be enough reason to keep them a little more discreet.

            Me, No I'm not sexist, but I do think that people should have more respect about the differences between men and women. So Those EXTREME Feminists sort of rub me the wrong way. I think in a lot of ways they are more sexist then the men they feel like they are being oppressed by. But thats slightly off toppic. ^^;

I think the U.S. needs to chill out about things like this. I think the density of the sexual harassment laws needs to be reduced by orders of magnitude. Ah yes, the gender bias should also be thrown out the window. I can wish can't I? I blame the Puritans for their prudish ways and continuing to guilt modern lawmakers into their continual silliness.

As for topless women, why not? It happens everyday on the beaches of Europe. Nor does it seem that they care about breasts all that much since they are advertised in plain view of everyone. After 4000 years of human evolution we should just accept each other's floppy body parts and move on.

Hmmmm, I guess it depends on the pro's and con's(which is I barely know). If the pro's are good enough while the con's are not that heavy in today's society, then implement it. And if the con's are bad enough while we don't really gain at the pro's, then don't implement it. And if it's implemented in someway, I guess wearing or not wearing a shirt/bra still depends on a person's liking.

second of all, boobs are not sex orgams, but they do repensent or give certain amount of exitacion to men, that means they should be hide, unless the girl want ALL the guys to stare at her chest.

finaly but not less important, I know by, in fact, girls that dont wear bras have certain "gravity problems" (means their boobs fall and start to look ugly, for what I think, no female, or male, want such thing.

I feel completely uncomfortable when a guy starts having conversations with my boobs instead of me. There is a guy I work with who does it all the time, even in high collared shirts, there is no way I'm going to give them any more reason to stare at them.

    I'm all for equal rights...
That's why I don't want topless ladies, NOR TOPLESS GUYS.

Seriously. While I do want a topless lady right beside me in the confort of my own home, between four walls, I'm not much into ladies with soggy tits hanging around everywhere I look. :P

I don't mean to be offensive, but I think even the ladies don't don't feel very confortable walking around topless. And most also don't like walking around to see hairy sweaty beer bellies too.

This won't go well with kids too, though I'm aware of all the "girls shouldn't be ashamed of their bodies" and "equal rights" discussion, but I think all things have the right time and place to be. This is not sexysm, it's just an opinnion.

And I'm no grumpy square religious moralist, but for some things, society just have to reach common ground.

Currently it's completely legal in the state of New York for a woman to go topless. Legal as in, the issue has previously been taken to court and the judge ruled in favor of the topless women who were being fined/etc. So there's established legal precedent for all this.

I'll note however.. I can't think of a single time where I've seen someone enjoying the benefits of this ruling.

The ruling only applies to protests wherein said boobs are used to emphasise a political message (via shock value).

Doesn't actually make exhibitionism/public-nudity legal in any way.

The religious right would never allow a law like that, anyway. The whole world could go topless, America still wouldn't budge.

So uh, why was this mentioned AFTER the actual day?

Yeah, men hardly wear shirts as it, so hardly anyone cares (unless they're really fat & ugly). We (including myself) would enjoy it for awhile, but then we'd hardly care since women would always be topless.

Too much of a good thing, I guess. *shrugs*

To make us disinterested in them? Seriously, THEIR advantage to us guys, is that they can hide them and men goes over heels trying to find out what it'll look underneath.

Beaches, that's fine, btu on the street, ALL THE TIME?? They should ban separate toilet as well while their at it

I see nothing wrong with it being legalized. There would still be laws like no shirt no shoes no service, so it's not like all women everywhere would be running around topless all the time. There is of course, still danger involved in women going topless, but that's a right that they should be allowed. It seems like everyone that's against it seems to think that every woman in the world is just going to suddenly shed their clothing and walk around topless everywhere if this were to happen.

O.o Wow, a whole lot of you seem to not like this idea. That seems very weird, and wrong. Women should have the right to go topless if they feel like it, breasts are NOT a sexual organ, just because they can arouse men (and sometimes the woman herself), doesn't mean they are a sexual organ. If it did, then we should ban necks! And legs! And ears! Because those body parts (among others) can do the same thing.

Now, whether or not women will be WILLING to go topless, is a different story. Some might, others won't. I would say that the majority would not be willing to do so, and as such, it won't even have that much of an impact in the first place. Women will not "lose their power" by going topless since so few would do it anyway. When it comes to sexual harassment, well that's simple. If a woman decides to go topless, she should understand the fact that people might brush against her breasts accidentally. Those men who abuse the fact that the woman is topless are guilty of sexual harassment. Just as if a man were to feel up a womans legs without permission, or any similar case.

*nod nod* I wholeheartedly agree. After all, ankles and legs used to be considered extremely sexual, and women were forced to cover them up. This isn't any different. People really do seem to think every woman out there is just going to throw off their tops and run around in public. They're just fighting for the same rights men have and there is nothing wrong with that.

The 14th Amendment. Huh. I bet some, if not more, think it is not okay for same sex marriages and other things to be backed up by that Amendment... But they should be allowed to have it back up something that is less important than maybe the idea of enforcing the Amendment to back up more important things.

I say that they should go for it, toplessness is such a nonsensical taboo, and I agree that if men are able to do it, then women should be too. Now I think the same restrictions should apply to women as they do men though, such as, not being able to be topless in certain buisinesses, which are mainly for sanitary reasons. I think that it's time to tear down these types of walls, and leave taboos in the past where they belong. This isnt even completely a matter of equality, This is also a matter of acceptance of the human body. Clothes were created to protect our bodies from the elements, as time went on, people became more vain, forgetting many of the human bodies practical uses, and instead replacing them with more outlandishly impractical clothing. Within the last hundred years, practicality of most of our clothes has come back, allowing us to once again re-use the human body without shame, or restriction. Sometimes still clothes can be a hindrance, and people feel the need to remove them, and now we have people saying,"no, I dont care about your reasons, you simply cannot remove your clothes." How vain, and impractical is that?

I always thought it was kind weird myself. Why can men go topless, but women can't? It's like some random person from thousands of years ago made this decision, and now everyone just blindly follows some random dead person's wishes. The idea, that going topless is wrong, is so completely hammered into our brains, that people just automatically jump to the "of course it's wrong!" mentality, but when you really really think about it, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I like how most women in here think its not so great, for the most part.. and every guy thinks its the best thing since football. lol.

I, for one, don't really care to see women walking around topless. Sure, that's attractive and all but really.. it isn't anything to get so excited about. The classic male fixation on a woman's form never ceases to amaze me. xD

I think it's a great idea, though. Why stop someone from doing what they want if it isn't hurting anyone else? As a guy, I have to say, on a super hot day its nice to be able to just go bare chested around (but I even don't go do that in real public places). It's not like every woman will be forced to go topless if its passed. I bet things wouldn't even change that much, really. I don't think many women are that eager to go run around topless everywhere.

But who knows. I still say let people do what they choose as long as it doesn't hurt others around them.

I wouldn't know. I don't study the bible. Also, raping someone falls under the category of "hurt[ing] others around them." Rapes happen regardless of clothing so that isn't even a retort, rather, an irrational comment.

This sounds like my kinda day!:P I think of it this way, if men can go topless just about anywhere they go, why can't women also, I think it is just more frowned upon because woman have more to show most times... somehow this reminds me of Suicide Girls... oh well, anyway... If I had a chance to go topless, and it was completely socially acceptable, I think I would do it, especially on really hot days,... you know...

Well, feminism like many ohter organisations only fight for advantages for there members and not under whatever slogan they are saying. Women don't wish equality they're just using it as a cover to gain advantages (Ofcourse they should be payed with the same amount as men as such).
I believe if they truly fought for equality they would also start fighting for the right of being dragged into the military involounterily, equal rights in divorces cases (women win far far more than men, even if they are much less qualified) and in many ohter areas where womens have advantages.

First off, I gotta say this: Some of you need to grow up. Last time some of you saw a pair of breasts was yesterday when your mother was done breastfeeding you, it seems.

Second off, there's entire societies out there where the women are topless. Hell, there's societies out there where both genders are naked. And you know what? In those socities, rape does not exist. Let me say that again: -rape does not exist there-.

It is America's prudish and puritanical nature that is a leading contributing factor in not only that but all sexual problems. Impotence, sexual abuse, spousal abuse, the various -philias, and so on and so forth.

Open societies are peaceful and have very low crime rates (or nonexistant ones). Closed societies cause a lot of problems. So anything that helps to drive a nail into the coffin or puritan America is a step in the right direction.

Also, to all those complaining that the 'fun' would be taken out of sex - going topless has NOTHING to do with sex. Here's a tip for many of you: Women can't get pregnant by having her boobs toyed with. I know, shocking. There's nothing more sexual about breasts than there is about an earlobe, an elbow, or the inner knee.

Since many people still do not understand, and I know I probably shouldn't re-post this, but still. Understand this.

If women get their rights, that does not mean they are forced to walk around topless. It just gives them the right to do so. Just because they get their rights doesn't mean all of a sudden every woman in your town will run around topless. Someone else said that in New York, women are aloud to run around topless, but guess what. THEY DON'T.

While I don't care either way...

As a girl I physically wouldn't be comfortable being shirtlessXD
I don't even like going without a bra is so uncomfortable... They don't... stay still >.>
And it can hurt the muscles if they move around too much... Thats common sense for any girls who's had a sports bra thats not supportive enough.

As far as for the socially acceptable and Feminist issues I honestly feel like they're just being too nit picky... Honestly how many females are really offended about inequality here? If a girl wants to looks like a fool and run around half naked I honestly don't care~XD
And I have nothing against... Nakedness... its fine...>.>
But going around shirtless just to make some sort of statement is childish... They just want attention and to stir things up...

If they have so much free time they should put their enthusiasm towards real problems with the world...

I was gonna say, "Wouldn't most girls rather not go w/o some support?" (I'm a guy if anybody hasn't already gotten that from the statement.)

But basically, while the rest of the world is starving and crime continues to happen, we are going to hear about naked women. Really now, I have to agree that there are more pressing issues out there. If you really want to be naked w/o the worrying what others thought, do it in your own home/room.

Ummm.... last time I checked the breasts were considered a reproductive organ, and therefore from a conservative's perspective inappropriate to be displayed in public where there are children, old prudes, and horny teenage otaku present. Not that I have a problem with equality or the parading of unclad baps personally. I think it would make the world a happier place if we could all look into each other's eyes and smile ^^

After actually reading the link on the pro topless site~ I see that about 90% of their issues deal with Breast feeding rather than the actual concept of women running around half naked because its their right~
So I just thought I'd say that I'm in support of public breast feedingXD
I have a baby sister~ so I know the problems my mother has had with that... She was asked to go to a rest room one time in a restaurant even though there was a blanket covering not only all of her~ but my baby sister's head... And You can't feed them in a bathroomXD Where would you sit? On a toilet feeding the baby~ I think thats a bit unsanitaryXD If people are so immature that they can't deal with something as innocent as a mother feeding her child then yeah... they need to gtfo~ not the woman~

I am always surprised to see such a heated debate over an exposed bosom. The reality is it's no big deal if a mother wants to feed her newborn or even if a person wants to take off her shirt to cool off.

Here in New York City the law changed several years ago and no we don't see rampant boobs causing a ruckus on the streets. You may occasionally see as I mentioned before, a runner in the park cooling off, or a Mom breastfeeding, and maybe if the stars line up just right you might see a college kid topless running around trying to prove a point no one cares about anymore, "Yes you can run around topless in NYC, Now put your shirt on!".

Now I noticed some people have concerns about increased harassment, Though these concerns are valid, in reality humans in general lose interest in what they see everyday. I went to Southern Africa for a few weeks (South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia) it is common for women to be topless and the people see breasts as having utilitarian value. So the first thing I heard from Africans male and female a like is "Why do American's (U.S. Specifically) have such an unhealthy obsession with breasts".

    So in conclusion:

will the world begin to fall into Armageddon because of an exposed boob or two; "No not really"

are pervs going to be popping out of the woodwork to squeeze these "free range" mammary glands with wanton abandonment; "Probably not"

But gone will be the endless protests, marches, and hoopla so women can have the right to take off their shirts.

They should be allowed to wear whatever they want, even if it's no bra in my opinion. As the bra is meant to be something that is comfortable for them. There are some women who can't comfortably leave their homes without a bra on, because their breasts get in the way of every day activities or become sore from moving around too much.

And then there's of course the whole dress thing...
    If you're wearing a thin white T-Shirt...
But don't want people to look at you as something's poking out...
And you're not wearing something in particular, and it's starting to rain/oops I spilled my drink.
