Otaku Parents

My parents aren't into these kinds of hobbies, but they wont say "no!" to me either.

Ha! I wish! If my parents shared similar hobbies with me, life would have been much much simpler especially during the younger years.

My mom or step-dad don't care for anime.

My grandfather from my mom's side of the family actually enjoyed watching Mazinger Z, he also spoke Japanese fairly well. I sure do miss him...

My grandfather from my dad's side of the family is still alive and kicking. He is at great health he has all his hair, teeth, posture, and an appetite for booze, lol. Back on track, he learned how to use an airbrush very quickly and he currently enjoys building Gunpla. Every now and then he asks for a new kit, but he only snaps the kit together and paints it. I on the other hand, cement parts together, sand, prime, paint, panel line, and topcoat.

I enjoy building Gunpla with my grandpa, and watching Gundam together. He thinks Lockon is king! My grandpa is my father in life.

My parents aren't really into anime or anything related to it, although they sometimes watch it when I do (they both like Ghost in the shell, which is my favourite anime).

My father used to be into Getter Robo and Transformers, but then drifted away. With the birth of their granddaughter, they became big fans of Studio Ghibli (I was showing my baby Totoro all the time). ^_^

But, that's the extent of their interest.

My father has watched several Gundam series and was the one who got me started on Gundams. But ever since a long while ago, he does not watch anime anymore. My family isn't the type that spends money on anime goods however, so now I try to search for them on my own.

Although Gundam was one of the first few real anime I have watched, I havent gotten truly interested until I went off on my own journey through the titles. Then with that, I found a love for the drama genre which usually involves some sort of romance.

My mother really had nothing to do with my anime interest unless her opposition towards romance has caused me to become rebellious.

My parents don't understand anime or games...

my parents didn't know what anime was until me and my brother got into anime. but since they dealt with him liking anime before me once i got into it they knew what to expect with wall scrolls and music taste. but i don't think they ever expected me to get into figure collecting. My parents don't mind the figures much since they both have their own collections. My dad collects model trains and my mom collects those expensive porcelain Lladro figures http://www.lladro.com/ But i know a few people who have to hide it from their parents an i always feel bad for them since my parents are cool about it.

Nope, I wish that would be the case, in then, you'll have someone close, other than friends to talk to regarding these subjects. xD

My dad was actually the first in our family to buy a figure! LOL XD

But now I do the buying. He just bought it because it looked sexy and it so happens during that time he went with me inside the toy store where the said figure was displayed. Now I buy figures in conventions or when I happen to be near Greenhills (Akihabara of the Philippines).

LOL I hope my children becomes just like me XD

Somewhat. My dad got me started on modelling, painting, and videogames. My mom got me into cooking.

Nops... animes are too new in Brazil, so I guess my generation will be the first.
Similar to games. Lots of dads nowadays that share same interest in gaming with their kids...

My parents were into mecha such as Voltes V and Mazinger-Z during their younger years as what they had told me when I was still a kid... My mom even taped(recorded) some episodes of Danguard Ace which happens to be my very first mecha anime... that's where I started to indulge in Japanese stuff... But as time goes, my Dad went ???(O_o)??? every time I play super robot wars series games though he's a mecha fan himself.. They don't really care about me collecting figures and into otaku stuff... So to maintain this, I have to help them with work and stuff...

Not here, i'm kinda a closet otaku when it comes to family.

sadly it's a 'no' for me as well, but I did saw my dad buy an Akira DVD once. although I suspect he didn't know it was anime. ^^

My mom really loved the Kenshin OAV episodes.
She watches Studio Ghibli with too.

My parents dont share the figure-love. But my dad's read Deathnote and some other stuff, watch some anima stuff too. (He only read deathnote cos i told him it was awesomely awesome lol)

Well, my parents wasn't so keen when i started being an otaku. My mom almost freaked out when i told her i started collecting figures. But now everything is okay, helped by the fact that i now live at my rented place and i've convinced them that it's okay to be an otaku rather than a serial murderer or a robber...
See, being an otaku is better after all~

My mon can't bear manga (even Yotsuba !) and figures but she likes the art. Indeed she thinks it's cute. My father used to play video games on NES (Mario and Megaman) but he hasn't play anymore since the 3D in video games...

No way. I've watched one or two Ghibli movies with my mom, and she does admit some of my figures are kinda cute, but that's about it.

My parents don't really mind...though they think anime = cartoon = kids stuff...well the only complaints now are how expensive my hobbies are...other than that they're fine

Nope. Just not into it at all. They block my bank account if I went overboard on the figures lol...But I recently realized that they just aren't 'hobby-persons', so I guess it's a case of 'to each his own'....

a "nono" for me ^^; they didnt throw me down the window though, they actually support me. Back in the kiddo days they will watch the anime on tv with me

At present my parents don't give a damn about my hobbies, thou i could easily tell that a few yers back they were even against it. What a typical responsible adult person usually says about another person watching "cartoons" when he/she isn't 10? They usually pitty him. I always heard those comments to grow up etc. On the bright side, they finally understood that telling me such things was usless and somehow got used to my hobbies ;)

Life would've been different if I had Otaku parents. I can see many Otaku parents in the future^^!

My dad used to read comic books as a child; he doesn't read them now though. He likes Shrek, that's the only animated feature that I know he liked. He is a military-fan, so I know I got that from him.
My mom on the other hand, seems to enjoy anime. She thinks my figures are cute, watches Animax (Elfen Lied and Tenjo Tenge are her faves) and enjoys Ghibli stuff.
We've even planned to watch "Kiki's Delivery Service" together ^-^
Overall, they're pretty supportive. I only get scolded about how I spend my money ^^;

Again, for me to reiterate. My parents hate my hobbies and want me to be a socialite hipster instead.

HA!! I remember bringing my mum to watch "Eva 1.0" and at the end of the show, when I ask her how was the movie, she was going "^_^;;;"...

Parents were and are not into anime/manga.. and it rocks to know that we are going to breed otaku kids XD

My parents' hobby are 180 degree from me..

they disagree that i become an otaku, due to the fact that:

- a lot of spending on otaku stuffs (DVD, Figs, mangas, etc), though i use MY OWN money in these stuffs.. Do they really have the right to complain??

- a lot of time i spend to watch anime until night and browse

they don;t like watching anime either.. thinking it only for children ( a common stupid misunderstanding in indonesia ==;;)

they have banned me in buying another fig.. but i have just collected it for only 1 yr, so how can i stop?

Mine Either - They are not into anime. Maybe because we anime lovers have lots of free time or choose to have a free time to into anime- just my observation.

My parents think anime/manga is childish, but they tolerate it as long as it doesn't affect my schoolwork. They never questioned my manga, wallscrolls, or figures, just shook their heads. Although they're less accepting of cosplay because it get so messy . . . good thing I live by myself now, college is the greatest.

i noticed many of our parents either detest or are apathetic towards anime. while some of you guys may have some ill will towards them because of it, it is prudent that we accept that people, being the fickle-minded beings we are, have different tastes and likings. I for one can never understand the big deal behind Kdrama or Kpop. for those with parents who share your passion and hobbies, good for you. as for the others, we should just accept not only our parents but friends may have varying degrees of disinterest in what we have come to love.

personally i am like Sarith, they can never understand anime. But they let it be, as long as i can maintain a decent grade in school, which reminds me... tutorials are piling up! arghhhh

My mom likes the same stuff as me. I got her into it but now I kinda regret it, it's always awkward when she asks what hentai, oppai, and dolphin mean when she's looking for new series for herself.

Well my parents don't enjoy the same hobbies of mine but amazingly they are "proud" to show my collection of figures and gunpla to family friends that come to our home and they like the figures saying that they are very pretty

Neither of us go looking up skirts of anything but we are both mild otaku.. in the meaning of being a nerd really. We watch anime and read manga (none of the creepy otaku stuff, lol) as well as cosplay here and there when we can. My dad has more models than me... lol. I'm not into them.

The answer for is "no" as well... If my parents have the same hobbies as I, I wouldn't have to play eroge and read doujins late at night...

Only hobbie my dad practices is beer-drinking. So for me no. Howevere he did play videogames with me when I was a child, but I mean, games back then were Pac-Man and I guess Pole Position, so I doubt he would have play something a bit more complicated than those =P.

My dad don't dislike, but he don't like either and my mom like to look at the figures I buy and she likes to help me when I can't decide between two new figures.

They don't understand but my parents were lenient enough not to stop me from watching anime.

well my mom definitly isnt into anime at all, but she ends up buying alot of it for me when im not buying it myself (when i was in the hospital for a long time, she bought me a total of 15-17 manga or something like that which is crazy seeing as there were also bills for other things im sure and they were all ordered online too>.<)
my dad on the other hand likes some things, but he's more into marvel comics and thunder cats and idk wat else bc his tastes and mine are completely different and he'd freak if he found my collection xD

When I put on anime for me and my nephews to watch, its my mum who usually ends up asking questions and getting really into it. She really likes Ghibli, One Piece and Evangelion.

She can ruin me on Super puzzle fighter, but thats because she always plays puzzle games. plus she thinks my gunpla hobby is intresting because shes really into arts and crafts.

All in all, my mum is pretty cool :)

My parents are old school and don't get anime at all.

My dad would probably kick me out of the house if I ever bought something provocative. That or knock my head a few ways back to the returns counter.

My Mom watches anime with me but she's more into asian dramas and for some reason she doesn't want to read manga even if I tell her it's better.

My Uncle likes comics, and my Aunt watches a few anime like Cowboy Bebop and stuff but, most of my family doesn't know what anime and manga are.

My parents are okay with it now (they weren't at first!!!), as for the rest of my family, SCREW THEM!!! (they never cared for me anyway, well maybe except my grandparents), I'm gonna be an otaku father one day (Sojirou Izumi, my role model), and hopefully with an otaku wife (preferably an extreme tomboy, who happens to be just as "genki" as I am), and we'll be married in a COSPLAY WEDDING!!!!!!!!! I managed to suck one guy into anime, maybe I could corrupt others!!!!

Nope, my parents don't share my hobbies. But they have watched some anime movies like Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro.

Hardly knew my parents until recently, so the only thing I share with my father is the fact that we enjoy cross-country running. There is nothing my mother and I can agree on though, but we did watch Ninja Scroll and Ghost in the Shell together when they came out. ^.^

My parents probarbly think i watch cartoon porn and collect barby dolls in my room.
But at least they accept who i am, altough i think they think im somewhat diffrent to what i really am lol.

My mom's into a lot of the shojo anime, and is a total Figma addict now, but she doesn't care for action-based titles and doesn't really see the appeal of static figures. (Seriously, whenever I show her a scaled figure on this site I'm interested in, she immediately asks, "Is it articulated?" and when I say, "No", she kind of huffs off. It's funny. XD)

My dad will watch some of the more action-driven series with me, like Fullmetal Alchemist, but he doesn't have the same enthusiasm for it that my mom and I show for it. He also doesn't get the figure thing. At ALL. If I got a static figure, he'd just shake his head and say, "Well, it's your money. . . "

But I bet his brother/my uncle would probably look up their skirts out of curiosity. He's not much into anime at all, but he did accidentally glue his rotwieler to the bathroom floor once, so he's still fun despite not having an otaku rating. ^_^

Ma dad isn't really into otaku culture but he loves the feudal Japanese culture. My mom thought, it's another story... She has her own Nataku shrine (Shenlong/Altron Gundam from Gundam Wing) and has her own PS2, GBA SP, Game Cube and play more video games than me...hehehe. It's kinda nice. She watches alot of anime and loves everything Gundam. Nippon Banzai!!!

My parents are middle-classed and middle-aged, and thus not really into that kind of thing. I have managed to get them to watch some anime though, which I consider an achievement in itself! (Mum saw Howl's Moving Castle and Dad saw Paprika)

I think my father liked Transformers, althought I don't think he would have watched it if I hadn't been a boy, but the concept Anime is something that Sweden hasn't fully adapted yet. It's just cartoons when it's on TV.
As such, I don't think my parents could have liked anime, as their generation almost only had educational entertainment and Disney.
Still, gotta give them credit for having a good eye for new stuff, as they brought me a NES, althought I was slightly too young to be able to play it properly at that time.

Dude Souless, you have the coolest grandfather ever. Sadly my parents aren't into the anime/manga/figure otaku culture either. My mom always tell me to stop wasting money on figures, but thats all she does. She wont stop me from buying them, but she'll always tell me that lol. As for my dad, he has bought me a crapload of action figures like power rangers, sunrise super robots, gundam and etc ever since i was a kid, so I dont think he minds. But he has yet to see my recently acquired female figures heh heh. >_>

My parents are really open-minded regarding my hobbies as long as I set my priorities right. My mom and I don't have similar hobbies at all. She likes gardening, on the other hand, I like to mess around with her plants when I was a kid XD. Although, she may not have similar hobbies but she knows what I like really well. She even got into Soccer just because my dad and I like to watch soccer.

On the other hand, my dad and I have similar hobbies. He likes photography so every time, we are on vacation, he always brings bring his camera and handycam. Not only that, he is totally into gadgets and stuff especially cellphone. He changes his cellphone at least once a year and buy new electronics every month >.> so he is pretty geeky for someone at his age (54).

Back when I was a kid, my dad was into console gaming. He brought brand new NES one day when he got back from work. I remember playing it with him and my mother was telling us to stop for dinner multiple times but we just kinda ignored her lol.

Last year, my parents went to Japan without me T.T ( I love them slightly less because of that lol ). I am not sure how but they managed to find 3 figures that I wanted at Akiba and apparently, my dad was having fun looking around at Akiba to find my figures according to my mom ^^;;. They are planning to go again next year probably.

My dad on the otherhand... I remember him renting Robotech and other OVAs when I was little. He sometimes watches anime that's shown on TV, the dubbed stuff :P My dad used to be a hardcore Avengers comic collector. Too bad he got rid of all of his comics when we moved.

Not sure what my parents would say about my figurines. They haven't seen my collection yet. I don't keep them at home, only my office.

Well my parents are into the Japanese culture, we make sushi for a living...but they don't support my hobby...

my dad occasionally buys american comic books not for him but for me. I find it cool that every time he passes by a shop or some place that sells them, he gets me something even if I don't like it. My uncle in my dads side of the family is a hardcore Mecha fan though. anything that has to do with giant robots he loves.
my Mom and her side of the family are more conservative and religious so definitely no interest there except for my 40 yr old uncle who recently got into Tamiya model building and airsoft.

My grandma found One Piece (dub) a bit enjoyable. I forced her to watch it because I wanted to check out a certain episode while it was on TV, and she thought it was pretty silly, and I've caught her watching it a few times, but she doesn't get too into the story, mostly just the comedy and action I'm guessing, she also liked Spirited Away.

I live with only my mom and she never watched anime and when I was little discouraged me from watching it. She still tries to discourage my habits and actions regarding anime and manga.

My parents think anime is silly >_<. I guess it would be really awesome if we shared some of the same interests like figures. Then they would know what to buy me as a present XD

My parents loved the Ghibli films, but beyond that...I don't know, actually. They didn't really realize my level of obsession until recently, and so far their approach is to just let me do my own thing: basically, "It's your time and your money."

Since I haven't really tried to get them to understand or watch yet, I can't say they don't. My mom's crazy about Japanese/Taiwanese dramas though, so I can see both her and my dad getting interested. Or not. Either way.

Yeah my parents are pretty much anime-lovers too. Watched Code Geass with my dad the other day. ^^ My dad is still into anything with "Gundam" in it and my mom watches stupid shoujo series......... ewwwwwwwwwwwww plz no. She loves Special A. :( I mean of course i love her like a daughter should, but those are for tweenage girls who don't yet have a boyfriend. Me and my sister basically watch the same stuff and collect similar figures, except she likes darker series and reads manga religiously. :( My brother likes Doraemon, Pokemon, Meitantei Conan and watches Naruto.

So my dad doesn't read doujinshi anymore (although we both have our doubts) and doesn't touch my figures. At least i hope he doesn't. Eww! xC The advantage of a "otaku" family is that we get to go to cons as a family event (more $$ to spend) and they approve of my hobby to some degree.

My mother is a fashion designer and dressmaker, and sometimes she asks me to lend her some manga/anime when she's lacking "inspirato" XD and there are some that she enjoys a lot, like Studio Ghibli's movies or Masamune Shirow stuff *lol*

My Mom loves buying manga when she visits Japan, or in the nearest Book Off. She has a huge collection, and my dad, err. >__> He's just 100% WoW obsessed. ;___;

My parents are from another dimension and time space just as Danny mentioned about his parents. They are not in the least interested on my hobbies, but thankfully they respect my interests and hobbies.

No, my parents know nothing about animé, other then I enjoy it. That, and my father can't hear a word of what any high-pitched character says, so basically that means, averaged, more than half of the dialogue of every animé, ever made.

I'm the same as you Danny. Since I and my parents were not born in US or in (Western and Japanese culture) my hobbies and interests differ from my parents. They were bought up in USSR and I'm half and half. One half brought up in Belarus and another in USA. Thought my mom does like anime like Spirited Away, she only prefers feature length ones. Mostly only when I watch it and tell her "hey mom I think you will like this one, it has good art and nice story." So her favorite anime is Spirited Away heheh It is interesting to see how family changes and differences between generations.

My step-dad would love anime, but I don't think I have ever really watched any with him, and my mom used to watch the things I would watch (before she passed away), but I'm not sure she was into them as much as I am...

My mother thinks figures are cool and buys em for me for my birthday or christmas, and we watch some anime together sometime but that's it.

My father likes some movies and especially hentai, so I sometimes download some good stuff for him on his computer.

well my parents are not otaku(cry), though my stepdad is otaku in sense, he has a extreme collection of toys from the 1900-1970's his 50 by 50 hobby nook is packed! you cant even walk, and the top shelves are sagging from all the wieght..lol

It's not that unusual in a sense. Otaku parents are just nerds and dorks from the 60's and 70's who somehow found a way to procreate.

none of my family care what i do, my dad just told me i can do whatever i want as long as i dont watch anything rude around my two younger brothers. the main reason my family dosnt mind is due to it improving the level of my art. although my mums boy freind likes to make jokes saying ill go to japan to marry some short asian girl.

My mom supports the whole otaku thing. She doesn't mind when I buy manga since I'm technically spending money on books. She also knows I plan to order figures and actually liked my Haruhi Suzumiya wall scroll I got in the mail, my grandma did too. ^_^

My dad is the complete opposite. He just doesn't get it. Saw me playing Persona 3 one time and just kept saying "This is so stupid." Did the same when I was watching Code Geass. :( So now I just play my games in my room and watch anime with headphones to avoid the comments.....

My dad never liked it but now he doesn't care. My mom hates me spending money on toys. To her, figures will always be toys, not art. Funny thing is, she not saying anything about my figmas. lol

My dads not an otaku, but he got me into it by showing me films like Ghost in the Shell and Akira when I was a kid.

My father was a die-hard fan of the Ultraman series (the first one, the return of and 7) and Kamen-rider Its really fun to see him quoting words from kamen rider because it makes him return to his childhood days and my mom yes she is not really into these kinds of things but i see her reading anime light novels when she is bored :3

i guess my folks weren't like fans of anime and the sort, yet i have been conditioned since infant to be comforted at home, so they throw me lots of comics, animes, games and stuff so i would like it at home :p

of course my dad's quite the gamer, yet exclusively to fishing games :nohope:

Otaku parent in development FTW!!!

I attempted to get them to like anime, hell i would settle for them just to watch it but its a no go for me. Still they don’t say no to my hobbies and even get anime DVD's, Manga’s and figs, but its strange being the only one in my family and friends who’s into anime/manga and the like. My little sister takes interest in my figurines but then again she just thinks there toys. But my aunt plays MMO's allot, if that counts for anything.
