Isn't anime such a cool subject to talk about?
My first anime was when I was a wee little lad back in the UK - watched dubbed versions of Gatchaman known as "G-Force" in the UK.

The first anime I watched in my late teenage years was the original Macross film dubbed in Cantonese - completely fell in lurve with Minmay and realized that I had a thing for 2D characters ^^;

Gatchaman below.

Minmay singing Tenshi no E no Gu below.

Feel free to paste youtube urls of your first anime > http://jp.youtube.com/

To Karasu-kun and all - can we not forget to quote the source of any image posted - if you forgot then please mention so. Want to make sure we credit the source.

Original text from Karasu-kun below.

I finally got off my lazy butt and started cataloging all of my anime this weekend. As I was going through all of my stuff I started thinking about all of the series/movies/OAV I've watched over time, and how long I've been watching anime. I distinctly remember watching Sailor Moon before school during junior high, Akira with friends (the dub *shudder*), Ghost in the Shell, Tenchi Muyo, all the mid to late 90's standbys. The first real series to suck me in though, was Fushigi Yuugi. I'm not terribly fond of other Watase Yuu series, but FY instantly what drew me in, if it wasn't a little formulaic. Do you remember what your first series was, and do you regard it fondly looking back now, or would you be embarrassed to say you watched it/liked it now?

Sadly that's same as me. DBZ is technically my first anime. After that I didn't see anything again until about junior year in high school. When a friend showed me Bleach. Eventually I progressed where I am today.

Add my name to the list of DBZ was my first anime. I had watched anime before then "Battle of the Planets" and "Speed Racer", but I didn't recognize them as anime. It was only until I watched DBZ on Toonami that I realized what I was watching was anime. Then it was all down hill from there (or up, depending). ^__^

I think the record of lodoss war along with Dragon ball, then DBZ are my earliest memories of anime. well of course I've seen cartoons n stuff when i was a kid too but those don't count :P

oh and uh .. I'll admit it: sailor moon (and im a dude)

then I kinda stopped watching anime on a regular basis till Naruto came along, then bleach .. then I started to pick up on any anime I could get my hands on!

Still, doraemon is kinda entertaining but you'll start wondering what will happen if some bad guys get some machines that can stop time. Even polices can't do anything right? xD

Robotech (Macross, Southern Cross, Mospeada) is what got me into anime HARDCORE. I'd literally rush home to watch it every afternoon, regardless if it were summer break or not. I guess you could call it my 'kiddie soap opera".

What I vividly recall is that the animation and story line were SO much better than the horrid crap that Hasbro and Mattel spewing out so they could pimp their toy lines. (e.g.: GI Joe, He Man, etc.)

BTW, you can keep Minmay; I was always a Lisa Hayes fan.

I want to say the same thing, but can those be counted as anime? The first was a radical re-editing of a Japanese cartoon, the latter was designed for American audiences, airing in the US first and later dubbed into Japanese. Artistically speaking, the "look" of both shows is certainly Japanese, although I was far too young to know the difference.

Discounting these examples, I would say my first this-is-a-japanese-cartoon anime was Ranma 1/2, followed closely by the Fist of the North Star movie.

I always was under the impression that Transformers came from Japan. Voltron is from Japan though and shares the same art style as everything else from that time period. If you say that Voltron isn't Anime, then the US imports of DBZ aren't Anime either. Those were extremely edited as well.

my first anime was sailor moon dub that aired in the morning before school. i remember getting up extra early just to be able to watch each episode. But at the time sailor moon was just a cartoon to me. But after that my brother introduced me to NGE and while i liked it it didn't hock me into anime as much as Outlaw Star did. I saw those two and loved them and just wanted more.

Yeah there's definitely a difference between "60's/70's/80's edited down" stuff and genuine anime. And I see that most people, by their posts, concur. Like I consider watching the dub of Sailor Moon or DBZ in the mid 90's, borderline genuine, but I don't actually consider having truly watched anime until I started watching giant series like Fushigi Yuugi.

Yeah, I'm with you with regards to not having truly watched anime until FY. This was still when the internet was very young, so I was having to get VHS copies from some group that fansubbed them. My first anime "experience" however was Voltron, though I didn't know what anime was then. It wasn't until '95 when a friend of mine loaned me Ranma 1/2 that I truly understood what anime was.

My very first experience with anime was way back when Robotech first aired in the US. Of course at the time I didn't know it was anime (or that the source material, SDF Macross, would end up being my favorite mecha franchise), but I think that would count as my very first anime as far as watching it for the first time. As for watching for the first time and actually being aware it's anime, I would probably have to go with watching Dragon Ball Z in Japanese with no subtitles on the International Channel...oh what, about 10 or so years ago. First anime I ever bought was the Macross Plus OVA.

I became addicted to animes at an old age... I was already 19 by that time.
So, I probably watched some stuff before that... Akira, Dragon Ball Z and Saint Seya probably.

But the one anime that really made me addicted to animes was Trigun.
It was also the first fansubbed title I got. The first one I watched in japanese with english subs. I'm pretty shure I wasn't hooked before because of dubbing.

Most people probably already watched it, but just in case:

Honestly, I can't remember orz.... But I think, one of my earliest anime was Macross dubbed in English. If I remember correctly it was aired in the morning by our local TV station, I always remembered Roy Fokker, and I also faintly remember an episode where Minmei was crying... Nah, I can't really remember much, I was only able to catch it when there were no classes, now I'm itching to buy the original Macross series and watch it with my full attention.

BUT!!! Gundam Wing was the anime that really got me hooked! And it's the first ever Gundam series to be shown in our country by a local TV station. I was just a wee grade schooler
back then! I was so happy when I knew that one of my toys was a Gundam (Yes, my mom bought me a gunpla even before Wing was shown in our country). I was so shocked/happy when I saw the Wing Gundam in anime form, since then I always took care of the model and that's when my addiction for gunpla also started!

I can remember the times that I can only afford to buy 3 1/144s a year because I had such a puny grade school allowance back then T-T

My first anime was awfully dubbed Neon Genesis Evangelion on a local TV channel with a lot of scenes cut out way back in 2004, but never the less I was still in shock with its marvelous ending.
Now come to think of it, good 4 years passed since then. Wow, that a lot ^^

I managed to get through my entire schooling life disliking anime because I thought it was all DBZ and shonen fighty crap.

About six months after school, flicking through cable channels I saw Card Captor Sakura (Or Cardcaptors... *shudder*) and realised it was the cutest thing I had ever seen in my entire life. Got a few of the originial episodes and everything went from there. embarassingly, mahou shoujo still remains my favourite genre.

Speaking of Gatchaman, did you know the people who made the TMNT CG movie are making a CG movie of Gatchaman? It's looking very cool even from their progress shots (Imagi Animation). I've never seen any full episode of Gatchaman myself, but I do vaguely remember them on TV as a kid lol.

However, I didn't really follow it except for when I happened to flip it on while channel surfing. I guess I really didn't start to make time for anime until Dragon Ball (and eventually Z) and Urusei Yatsura on public TV here in America.

    I'm surprised that there's no one else (so far) whose first anime was Kimagure Orange Road. While I'm pretty sure I watched shows like Doraemon before my first episode of KOR, I didn't really consider those anime; they were more like kid's shows or cartoons. I suppose the distinction is the episodic format where I can't miss an episode. I was sick from school when KOR was first airing in HK and caught the first episode... couldn't stop watching it and tried to pretend to be sick the week after to watch more. ^^;;

I suspect Danny and I are about the same age now... I also grew up on a diet of "Battle of the Planets" and UFO Robot Grendizer (in particular, the part of Canada I lived in, the French edits as well). And perhaps Cantonese dub of Doraemon (we called it Ding Dong); but I did not have a steady intake of it because it was hard to come by.

Decades later, when "anime" became "anime" (i.e.: it was marketted as "something new and cool from Japan") I watched Sailor Moon, Tenchi Muyo, Ranma 1/2, Bubblegum Crisis, etc... My favourites today are anything Macross and Ghost in the Shell. Really, I getting much too old for most TV-style anime for kids.

I started out on "Battle of the Planets" as well, late 70s. Most were never presented as "anime" at the time, so how were we to know. I still recall a few station brodcasting programs as "Japanimation". Really didn't pick back up on anime in any big way until about 10-11 years ago. Then it tended to be whatever I could pick up that was subtitled. Hated the $5-$10 premium for those tapes too.

Somehow I ended up playing it and that was my first step into the world of anime and Japanese culture, and now I'm hooked. My first non-Pokemon animes were Escaflowne, Gundam Wing and the amusingly named 'The Big O' - does anyone else remember that series?

My first anime was the first Fatal Fury OVA. I was a big fan of fighting games like Fatal Fury and Street Fighter and ran into the VHS tape of Fatal Fury at a Suncoast (God am I old). I was like 8 at the time and thought the animation looked awesome as it was a style I'd never seen before, so after like a month of hiding the tape in various shelves until I had the money, I finally bought it. I loved it, so I quickly bought the next two Ovas. And so began me love of Anime.

Pretty much at the same time there was "Wunderbare Reise des kleinen Nils Holgersson mit den Wildgänsen" (ニルスのふしぎな旅, Nirusu no fushigi na tabi). Man did I love that series :)

The time until I catched on Sailor Moon in the mid-90ies is a blur ... I bet there have been many anime that I did not know of they were anime, but Sailor Moon would then be the first one I recognised as anime, the rest is history for me :)

Technically, I watched a few weird straight-to-video films that I didn't realize until years later were actually dubbed anime. Serendipity, for example, and My Neighbor Totoro, both of which I watched in elementary school. An interesting one to add to that list would be The Last Unicorn, a fairly well-executed collaboration between US and Japanese animation companies that I love to this day.

In middle school, when DBZ was huge, I became vaguely aware of the fact that these things were getting imported to the states, but couldn't stand them.

    Finally, though, in high school I started reading the American version of Shonen Jump, which my now-roommate lent me. Reading imported Japanese fiction was much more tolerable for me than watching it. I then rented Spirited Away, and it dawned on me that I just generally hated most of the dubbed voice acting. The first series that I remember watching on DVD was Chobits, followed closely by Fruits Basket and Fullmetal Alchemist, but during high school I was mostly a manga reader. Now it's the other way around thanks to the Jack Sparrow principle. ^^;

I remember my brother renting a few VHS tapes from this chinese grocery store my family used to go to back when I was a little kid, and he turned it on once we were home. It was then that I was exposed to Ranma 1/2 in Cantonese dubs: The art was really neat, plus I was at the same time exposed to Bruce Lee, so the martial arts were what brought me in at first. But it wasn't until my brother ordered the first 3 few tapes of Slayers and Tenchi Muyo OAV in Japanese with English subs that I really got into anime. Lina casting Fireball and Tenchi using...the Tenchi...have always been my fondest memories of my first foray into anime. Oh, those were the days...

The first anime I watched knowing it as "anime" was probably a showing of Akira on BBC Two. Must've been about 11 or 12 at the time. The first title I owned was the venerable Nuku-Nuku when I was 13. Bear in mind that this was that failtastic dub with regional accents - Kyouko with a Scouse accent, anyone? Yet, for some reason, I loved it to bits - mainly for the eponymous big-eyed robot girl and for Arisa, who had the only good voice in the whole endeavour. My tastes weren't as sophisticated back then, I guess...

Dubbed DBZ and Robotech (macross) was my first when I still couldn't differentiate western and eastern cartoons. heheh! The time that I knew the difference between them was when I was watching BurnUp Excess W. heheh! It's still at the top of my list as best series I've ever watched. And that's when I discovered I really love 2D characters. Who wouldn't? Just look at the heroines of that anime. heheh

I have watch tons of anime ever since I was four (even maybe younger) but for me they were only cartoons.

The anime that started it all (first manga too) was Sailor Moon. I got so obsessed I wanted to know more, and found out about anime. From then on it's history, and I have never seen such an uproar for an anime again (it even got its own crappy magazine) outside Dragon Ball in my country (Argentina).

I think it all started when I was introduced by my cousins to dubbed Pokemon when I was a wee lad. Then, throughout primary school, came a plethora of various other anime dubs that I really don't remember or care about anymore. Amongst these was the bastardised, shortened, gay/lesbian relationship-void dub version of CardCaptor Sakura that I just happened to decide to look back into sometime in the 8th grade. I realized how good the subbed version was, and finished all 70 eps on youtube.

This quickly led to my interest in anime, and to my interest in Japan...which in turn led me to this site :D

Card Captor Sakura for me in 2001, then my brother introduced me to Ghost in the shell, Akira, Evangelion, which was all a bit to much. But what finally got me into anime was Last Exile.

My first Anime.... I'd say that my first anime would be Sailor Moon, since my sister would always be hogging the TV. Now, the first anime I got into would be Love Hina.

My first Anime was Nagareboshi gin (or Silver Fang as it was called here) Dubbed in Swedish. I get nostalgic when i watch it... The one that really ruined me in my adult years was Neo Genesis Evengelion though, still get the shiws when Eva 01 runs berserk in the beginning.

I think my first anime was Battle of the Planets (the heavily edited version of Gatchaman). It was in 1981 or 1982...
Come to think of it, in my early years I also watched Calimero and Vicky the Viking (in the Netherlands he was called Wicky though).

My first anime was Speed Racer. I became a die-hard fan after seeing DBZ and the like on Cartoon Network and the Saturday Anime on Sci-Fi. They had a week-long feature once with movies like Galaxy Express 999 and Fatal Fury, also got hooked on Zeiram the Animation.

My first anime was The Shinesman. Not sure if anyone heard about since it was only 2 episodes long. It was basically a parody about super hero groups like the power rangers (which isnt anime). Instead of being teens who live a normal life but fight crime on the side, its businessman who stop the world from corporate evil. lol I know it sounds weird, but it has some really funny humor.

Either it was Yu Yu Hakusho, Gundam Wing, or another one about some kid with two girls that fight over him. Was on Toonami and the one girl had blue hair and a little cute animal that transformed into a ship if i remember correctly. If anyone can tell me what it was, thanks! =D

First anime.. I don't even remember. It might've been Robotech (Macross). I also remember watching Project A-ko very early on.. so those were the first ones. A-ko didn't hold up very well.. have the original Macross sitting on my shelf waiting to be watched.. but I'm afeared how that might go..

The first Anime I ever watched was an anime called "Crest of The Stars" on G4tV when it had good programming, dubbed of course. After that I was immediately hooked, went on and now have watched over 100 animes, which is surprisingly helping me with Japanese :P
