Original title "Animes and games that've made you cry or emotional" from member Zoniku.

For me that would be Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket - why why did it have to end like that?!
Grave of the Fireflies was too disturbing for me to continue watching.

Strike Witches can cause tears too - tears knowing that you cant have any of them as your friend.
As for games? Ghosts n Goblins for the Commodore 64 - the ice palace not only drive me to tears - it drove me to smash my joystick on the floor! I was very young at the time ^^;

Original text from zoniku below.

I wanna take a minute to be serious for a moment. Have you ever seen an anime that's ever made you cry? Tonight, I can add my 2nd anime to my list of animes that've made me cry: Voices of a Distant Star.

After watching Higurashi, I decided to watch Pale Cocoon since most people compared it to Makoto Shinkai's works. After almost getting emotional (I was a bit confused at the ending, but man, the art was wonderful), I wasn't in the mood to watch another episode of Higurashi or some comedy anime that I had (Ouran Host Club, School Rumble, etc.) & decided that it would be the perfect to watch Voiced of a Distant Star. Seeing as 5 Centimeters Per Second, another anime by Makoto Shinkai was the 1st anime that made me cryI knew what I was in for. & yet, I was amazed on how much it touched me. After seeing both his movies, I almost want to call Makoto Shinkai the Miyazaki of Emotional animes. I hope The Place Promised in Our Early Days will be just as good.

Edit: I've decided to add video games to the list. I remember crying to the ending of Klonoa for the Playstation when I beated it when I was about 11. That was a fun game....I also got sad (but I don't recall crying) to the end of Final Fantasy X.

The best stories should give you a strong emotional reaction. I felt it at the end of Gungrave and Eureka Seven, just to name a couple that I remember off the top of my head.

Hotaru no Haka (good movie, but depressing), Kaze no Tani no Nausicaa (after the ohmu attack; the music stirs the heart), Bleach: Memories of Nobody (I liked Senna), the first Pokemon movie (I got teary with the Pokemon and all the little kids around me crying), Snoopy Come Home (I was five. I thought Snoopy wasn't coming back), and a few others I can't remember...

I agree completely. AIR wasn't that good for me actually, but Kanon made me cry at the end. CLANNAD though...it remains the only anime that has ever made me cry multiple times. And seeing as to how Kanon and CLANNAD are the *only* two that have ever made me cry, well...I have to say that Key is absolutely amazing.

Air is still lacking, characters has more cry overs than the story itself isn't dramatic that makes the story exaggerating, lack of episode is one thing while Kanon deserves a mount of tears. KyoAni will do the thing on Clannad, I have to expect more out of this.

To me, "emotional" means me getting really interested, engrossed, etc. That is, when I care about the characters. I'm not necessarily crying or on the verge of crying, or shouting out in joy, but I find myself "bonding" with the characters in *really really good* anime. I find that often anime plots/characters aren't the type I can bond with - even if they're enjoyable anime.

Gundam 00, for example, I found myself being worried for what was about to happen to a character, or smiling when they succeeded at something, or leaning forward in "intense" scenes, or being upset with how something turned out. Very few anime have gripped me like that. Beck was one of them... umm... Yakitate Japan for a bit... Kure-nai... GURREN LAGANN.

Many anime have inspired me... with many of the Ghibli movies, whenever I watch them I get this really strong drive for a few days to learn Japanese, thinking I want to move to Japan, etc etc. I really enjoy the magic of those stories. I really do.

Hmm, I'd have to add the Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen OVAs to the list of tearjerkers. Definitely played to the strengths of Kenshin's tragic character that was really only hinted at in the TV series. Oh, and another good one has to be Full Moon wo Sagashite, which was definitely a downer each time an episode ended given that you knew that was going to happen by the series' end...

I always feel a little choked up at the end of Millennium Actress (Sennen joyu), and I can't recommend it enough. It must be one of least known animated films that actually got a proper DVD release in the US.

It really depends on how your channel your feelings towards someone in real life. Hmm, I think that it's good to be cautious of people like Makoto but, don't let it affect your decisions when it comes to relationships in real life. It's hard but, sometimes these experiences hurt, it's life after all. School Days really teaches that side of life, though not everything should be taken literally. Lolols, I 've had a few friends like Makoto and I had to be all Tsundere to get them to change their ways :P

I remember crying at the end of el-hazard when I was a wee lad,
but the cartoon that really drove me to tears was "the last unicorn", but I guess that doesn't really count as anime right?
but the first anime to move me to tears would probably be Toei's rendition of the little mermaid. the anime was more faithful to the original tragic story as compared to the disney version.

Yeah, I didn't like it when Mugen, Foo, and Jin seperated at the end. I don't recall me ever crying during an anime but I did feel really crappy during some. Some examples would include Inuyasha, Bleach, Rurouni Kenshin,Samurai Champloo Full Metal Panic, more that I can't remeber right now:). Also, I hated it when I was about 12 and Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz ended. I didn't cry because it was sad, I cried because I loved the action and didn't want it to stop. As for video games, the saddest one I think I have played was Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Now, for movies, I can't think of all of the ones that had me for tears or was so emotional that I can;t watch them anymore.

The scene with Fuko and her sister in Clannad brought me to tears. I also got close during Clannad: Tomoyo Edition. So far Clannad's been the only anime to move me to tears.

As far as games go I didn't cry but I got sad at the end of Persona 3 and Final Fantasy X. Oh and Aeris' death in VII also made me sad.

Okay, this is gonna cut my dignity down a few gigabytes but I teared up a bit watching Naruto... yes I did. Episode 19 during Zabuza/Haku's last moments.

Other emotional animes for me include AIR, Zero no Tsukaima II episode 9, and also when I found out that the Shuffle anime wasn't going to end with Rin x Kaede. I also shed tears of joy during the last scene in Cardcaptor Sakura second movie. That will always hold the top place for best anime scene ever.

I also cried at the end of Soul Link because I realized that I wasted a few good hours of my life watching that shit.

Saikano, other than Grave of the Fireflies, is probably the sadest/most depressing anime out there. The fact that the original sub group who did it put a warning at the end of episode 10 saying something along the lines of - "This is the end of happiness in Saikano. If you want it to have a happy ending, stop watching now, otherwise you will just endure pain and suffering." And really, the stuff upto ep 10 hadnt exactly been full of joy, but I carried on and they were soooo right. Poor Chise..

Anyways, some others that were pretty upsetting would be (obviously) Grave of the Fireflies, Kanon (both series - poor Makoto), Clannad, Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien, and the end of Mahoromatic.

Yes, yes- Full Metal Alchemist was the first anime to make me cry, and at several different points in the show. Nina and Alexander being turned into a homoculus by their own father, and then being blown up buy Scar. But it was the noise, that dreadful noise the creature made, that just petrified my soul. Then, of course, was the Hughes scene you are talking about (24 or 25 I think). I had actually seen that episode once before and failed to cry, but when I rented the DVDs and watched the episodes sequentially, I cried at the funeral scene (even though I knew the end result at the beginning of the episode). To be killed by someone who takes the appearance of your loved one- I really don't know how to respond to that but for utter contempt of Envy. Then, the quick death of Marta. I just could not imagine what had happened to Al, having someone die INSIDE OF YOU, and at only age 12. Lastly, the 4th closing. It was such a great song and fabulous pictorially- bringing back all the bad and good memories of the show. Having all those who died flashing at the beginning............ I am extremely surprised you were the first person to even mention the show!!!!!!!
Others include Genkai dying in Yusuke's arms, but then she came back!!!!!!! YYH was so stupid because no one ever died that should have, and it became monotonous after the dark tournament.
I almost teared up a couple times during the Gundam SEED sagas.
And this is off topic, but I've never cried more then when Snape died!!!

Yeah, KGNE was the first and last anime that made me cry. But even though no real tears dropped, I was definitely feeling very emotional after seeing 5 centimeters per second, Beyond the Clouds and pretty much every episode from ef (after 07). I actually think it's a shame I followed ef every week because I'm sure I would've cried had I marathond it because it just hits me harder then. D=

I'm same with Likewise above. KGNE made some (manly) tears roll down... I can't quite think of any other anime that has actually made me cry. I can get very emotional and about to cry, but not quite past that point like with KGNE. Byousoku 5cm was definitely one of those that took me right to the brink but left me tear free. SaiKano I think ep 8 when that friend of his kinda bit the dust... that was pretty emotional too. The end of Gungrave choked me up too. Can't remember how I reacted to these next two but they were pretty emotional too: Samurai7 and Ima Soko ni Iru Boku.

As for games....don't think I ever cried during any game, but only one game brought me close...and it's a hentai game of all thins lol. Kana Imouto...

The first anime that made me cry was probably Mahoromatic, others I remember are Air, the Makoto arc of Kanon '06 and Nanatsuiro Drops. There's probably more since I tend to get attached to characters easily. As for games, definitely Narcissu (or Narcissus?)and Planetarian. I remember crying for a good half an hour for both games.

Anyways, lots of animes made me emotional... most of them where already quoted here: Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Chrono Crusade, Hotaru no Haka, Kanon, Air, Kenshin Tsuyokuhen, Fruits Basket, Saikano, Hachikuro, Onegai Teacher... I guess there are more.

But just a couple of days ago I watched the one that got me harder... Kimi ga Nozomu Eien.

LOTS of them, but I'm kind of a pussy. ^_^
I bawled through the second half of Saikano (seriously, I started around episode 6 and just kept crying until the end). And I always cry whenever I watch Voices of a Distant Star. What else...Cowboy Bebop, Nadia, Gunslinger Girl, Chrno Crusade (oh man I cried so hard), Full Metal Alchemist, Trigun, Kanon, AIR, Evangelion (when Kaji dies), Grave of the Fireflies, The Daughter of Twenty Faces, even Azumanga Daioh (because it reminded me of how sad I was leaving my HS friends behind). Basically anything where a beloved character dies (particularly in a heroic sort of death), and I especially get emotional during scenes where a group of characters stand up against nearly impossible odds and go out like heroes even when they know they'll probably die (that always gets me).
Video games that made me cry.... Final Fantasy X, Lost Odyssey, both Kingdom Hearts games, and probably a couple others.
I can only think of one manga that's made me cry though, and that's Fruits Basket.

    Although i remember that in my "early states" of anime watching i didnt really find anything sad enough to cry at, more like ":/" but now iv gotten more emotional at anime ^^; (my siblings saw that i cried at the fuushi yuugi episode and kinda laughted at me >:| bastards) but yeah,im sure i'll see more animes that'll make my eyes get watery ^^;

Only one that really made me cry was the ef anime ef tale of memories. I cried almost every episode starting around 6 or 7 and what made it worse was I marathoned it in one day. I was such an emotional wreck after 11 because of what happened I stopped watching it for the day and called off work for that day and the day after. I remember talkin with my friend about the anime throughout on steam and when I hit 11 I told him I "I'm dropping this shitty ass anime." He never saw it but convinced me to keep with it since I was at the last episode anyways. Then episode 12 just added to me being an emotional wreck. I literally sat there after it was done for an hour doing nothing.

No idea how people could have followed it while it was airing lol

Any of Shinkai's films (Voices of a Distant Star, A Place Promised ... and 5 CM Per Second) have moved me in an emotional and good way. Yeah! The spoilers-- I had to be really careful to avoid reading some of this. For those of us over here in the U.S., anime broadcasting pretty much *sucks.* (Damn you Adult Swim! Da-a-a-amn you-u-u-u!). I am the kind of person who can shed tears over almost ANYTHING (Yes, it's true; I admit it). I think Tenrou mentioned Bleach - Memories of Nobody; that was my most recent experience. I was trying to hide tears from the other people in the movie theatre. The ending was so sad! I cried during Naruto when Sarutobi-sensei died (the 3rd Hokage). I don't think anyone mentioned the final episode of Blood+! Any other fans out there? That last episode was SOOoo touching! I didn't think Cowboy Be-Bop would end the way it did; that made me cry. I also cried when Yagami Soichiro died. :-( Thanks to Adult Swim's crappy programming, I have never been able to watch the whole Samurai Champloo series through to the end (someone else mentioned it).
This is making me sad you guys!!

I think I cried the most for Pokemon ^^; and the longest continuous tears for Kurenai ( I was going all waa waa for the second half). Somehow I cried for all the Key's anime although me dont even understand AIR.

    This is odd to answer.

Tears come unexpectedly, and when I think I might, or rewatch something, they don't come.

Eyes got moist at times for Fuuko's arc in CLANNAD; that's all I recall, but I'm sure there were other times…

No anime series yet has "moved me to tears". I am incapable of feeling many human emotions, but there have been numerous anime series that have moved me in some way or made me think.

    Blood+
    Gundam Wing
    Gundam 8th MS Team
    G Gundam

Gurren Lagann choked me up more than once. The first season of Higurashi was moving in a really disturbing way. Gundam 00 made me squirt some tears. Evangelion evoked a lot of emotion in me. There are a lot more, one of the main reasons I like anime is because of the variety of emotions most are able to evoke, even simplistic shonen stuff like Naruto. In relation to the comment about FFX, I have never once found a Final Fantasy game's ending to be anything more than generic or weird. I've been consistently disappointed by every FF ending. And as far as games that have made me mad, GnG made me do the same Danny, as well as Double Dragon and Contra. My friend has thrown a shoe at the TV over Tekken 5 and he just recently told me he threw his wireless 360 controller and bit it when he couldn't win the 2 matches he needed on Live with Soul Calibur 4.

    Anime's I've had watery eyes when watching/finished:

    Kimi ga Nozomu Ein
    Macross (end mostly)
    Simoun (end mostly)
    Air

    Games would be:

Lunar:Silver Star Story (for Sega CD, I cried a little back then)
Final Fantasy 4;2 in US (Wow, Golbez what?!? and the end was a happy teary one)
Final Fantasy 6; 3 in US (Loved it, just plain loved it, the whole Terra story so heart breaking)
Shining Force 2 for Genesis (sad ending, and a full of hope one as well)
    Chrono Trigger

I guess that's it, those are the most anime/games I have enjoyed, regardless of dificulty or pain it's been to clear them. Those are basically the ones that I have felt a lot when the have ended. Good stuff.

Cry? Well, I do do that from time to time. Rumbling Hearts was one of those sad stories populated by understandable idiots you just want to smack and say something like 'grow a pair!' As for a game, Discipline made me cry--NOT because I was sad at seeing one of the bad endings first, but because it was that disturbing.

There are quit a few animes that give you a "splash in face with emotions"

Like the already mentioned Gundam 0080 War in The Pocket give you a sense of the bad after taste and makes Al a more rounded character in the end. Plus it is the emotional elements that make a good anime drama

anime that made me cry REALLY hard:

Air (towards the end), CLANNAD (only tomoyo's arc), Voices of the distant star, grave of fireflies, only yesterday (studio ghibli's one - i cried at the ending credits), Gundam MS IGLOO, Ginban Kaleidoscope (Pete, you're such a jerk!), Rurouni Kenshin (Shishio's Arc), Fushigi Yuugi (the fate of tamahome's family, chiriko's fate, nuriko...sniff, sniff), kannazuki no miko (why that two girls have to be separated?!), doraemon (i cried to this when i was a kid. 10 years later, i cried harder at the "ending")

anime that made me go emo but without the tears:

code geass R2 (ALL HAIL LELOUCH!), NGE & End of Evangelion (it made me think real hard...), Gatekeepers (i hate to see it ended. i was 15 at that time), Vandread (the death of shirley and bart crying), Slam Dunk (at the end of Shohoku vs Kainan), Ayashi no Ceres (the death of chidori), gensoumaden saiyuki, gundam seed (the death of fllay...i'm her fan, you know...), steam detectives, you're under arrest 2nd season (when natsumi & miyuki got separated).

manga that made me bawl like a baby:

kanon (towards the end, ayu's arc), tomoyo after: dear shining memories (yes, i read that. but i want to play the game, too...), emma, fruits basket, ichigo 100% (towards the end), mahoraba (the scene where kozue-chan got cured), tsuiteru kanojo.

    how about games?:

a dream of summer by milk cat(a free VN, simple but it has a great emotional impact. i played it for the whole day and after i finished it, i cried for one hour), Narcissu by stage nana (also a free VN-damn, why the heroine had to die?), heart de roomate (H-game), piece of wonder (RPG visual novel), true love by software house parsley (an otaku must get his/her hands on this one!), yuki sakura/ snow sakura (H-game, kozue's and saki's route made me go emo)

I don't watch much anime but if the ending is even a little sad, I can go depressed for days.

An normal ending can still make my throat sore just because I don't want whatever I was watching to end.

And if the ending is meant to be a sad and emotional one...I don't know what will happen, I avoided those anime for this reason. Like AIR and Clannad.
