Censorship in Singapore

Looks like Singapore is a tough place for young lads - first they are made to do a few years of service, they have pages torn out of imported Megami and looks like they have light "ecchi" scenes deleted from anime.
Question to Singaporeans - are you happy with this? If not then is something being done about it anywhere?

Original text from Actar below.

For those of you enjoying Zero no Tsukaima: Princess no Rondo on Arts Central in Singapore, did you know that there were huge chunks of episode 6 were censored out?

As some of the subbers were slow, I decided to turn to local tv (not a good idea.). At those particular moments, that scene was not coherent.

The way that the Love Potion was transfered was via kissing. All the kissing scenes between the girls were removed together with any comments about boobs which I felt were pretty mild (no nudity). Above is a clip of one of the ten deleted scenes...

I understand that different cultures have different standards and views. However, what is really wrong with showing some things on television? What are your view on this, whether you are in Singapore or not? Would you feel cheated?

(The henshin sequence of kawaii Nanoha was also cut sometime ago...)

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

I think I'm feeling cheated ever since I'm watching anime.

It seems that the region of Southeast Asia, especially, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines were a bunch of moral faggots!

Take a look on Animax Asia for example, they censor it the scenes and changing the dialouge to make it more friendly (no swearing, which is bad), making it more like a fag than a serious one. (the only that I don't watch that channel is their in-house dub, which is suck pretty bad!)

Gladly in Indonesia, the TV stations not bring anime series like Zero no Tsukaima. but some anime series like Naruto, Bleach and Detective Conan will be stopped by KPI (Indonesian Bureau of Broadcasting) because that series showed some mistic (Naruto and Bleach) and sadistic (Detective Conan).

But the side effect of this announcement is the kids will buy the DVD of that series... which in Indonesia, some DVD (pirate) was inserted a some p0rn movie... (in this case showed on Power Ranger / Sentai Series pirate DVD)

      what do you think ?

Its because of all the censors that I totally gave up on animes that is aired on Art Central. Whats the use of airing an anime that airs on the same week as japan if they remove all the good parts.

Actually...Art Central does have a lot of interesting documentaries, so switching back wouldn't really kill...(well, I can't say it might), but I they likely kept the anime session cause quite a lot of people do watch it.

I personally don't watch cause they seem to have quite a few occasions when the script writer decided to write his own story. In my opinion the major censorship in this ep was likely cause there's a lot of homophobia here....or at least most of the people I've met here so far are pretty squeamish about it.

Never watch anime on Arts Central. It phails on epic proportions. Not to mention they didn't even air Season 1 & 2. And now they air Season 3, talk about random.
The other thing is, they allow kissing to be showed on some of their local DORAMAs. But censors anime. Wtf?

Singapore is very conservative, no? It's really too bad when the thought police get to call the shots in a country, but sadder still when the general populace actually agrees with it. I think producers of entertainment, be they video games, anime, live action movies, books or anything else should have a simple policy the world over - either you release it EXACTLY as the original author/director intended, or you don't get a single page/frame.

Wait till you get to see our NTV7. Their censorship techniques are so great sometimes you won't even notice that they've cut a chunk of the show till you friend tells you about it. Oh, and as for kissing scenes(no matter same gender or normal), we get the fade in/fade out technique. They're Malaysia's "Sensei of Censorship", I tell you. >_<

Beside the fact that I would personally feel cheated, hiding things that are a reality in the world, from young kids just makes them end up as ignorant teenagers and then they end up making the worse mistakes of their lives, because they aren't educated. How about Kanokon? I think they probably cut most of the show and left with only what they so called "clean" contents. Perhaps it will ended up like less than 10 minutes per episode if they air the show on local TV.

Here in the US we have censorship, but I suppose compared to a lot of places it's pretty lenient. Everything is basically uncensored. However when it comes to TV, all nudity is censored, unless the said show is showing on a premium cable station. tapes/dvds are uncensored though.

To me I don't understand the logic behind censoring nudity, but allowing gore and violent scenes are A-ok. Sex/Nudity is a natural thing, while some might argue that death/killing might be considered "natural" too but I don't agree with that, because society and humanity has evolved beyond the point of senseless stuff like that.

My number one annoyance when I first got into the otaku world was the censorship on "drawings", and later on even in 3D for things from Japan. However, I got used to it by now and just use my imagination. I still try searching for uncensored though. I just wish more artists would start releasing "Freebies" online, because I don't think it would fall under the law anymore?

In a nutshell, I hate censorship of any form, especially when it involves "natural" things. For example the only reason why female breasts are such a huge deal is because its a "rare sight" for males, it's something thats always hidden. I'm sure if society decided to treat breasts like it should be treated (natural part of the body) and women are allowed to bare it all without fear of arrest, then the notion behind it will disappear. Guys won't really obsess over it that much anymore.

Your thinking and my thinking are very much alike.

I mean wtf, showing violence is better then boobies....boo. Talk about backward thinking. If a boobie pops up during prime time TV (superbowl janet jackson incident) every high morality groups will be spewing their voices onto the networks...but they let violence slides.

i think the reason behind the censorship here is simply because in these parts, anime are misunderstood to be "cartoons" for kids. So when you have themes of a sexual nature in a cartoon, people are bound to react, and in these parts, that means complain, be it in blogs, letters to the presses and whatnot. Consequently, there's this fear of upsetting the public that perpetuates throughout the media industry here. Which explains why media as an artform is stagnant these days. Unless the authorities can get past that, censorship will remain as something we will have to deal with.

We do have some of that in Brazil too.. maybe not as extreme as in Singapore (I heard lots of cases just like that), but still, very annoying.

Also, most TV stations will try everything to air a dubbed version... something I just hate.
I have to forever thank fansubbers, because if not for them, I probably would never have gotten into animes.

I started at a late age, when I was already 19, and it was only because I came to know about fansubs.

I'm kinda out of synch with the brazillian anime fanbase, because I simply couldn't watch animes that were on TV, because of dubbing.

So most old animes that most brazilian fans know, I don't.
Also, most animes sometime ago were all censored. They removed from ecchi scenes to things they considered violent, or not suitable for minors.

And all animes were pretty much considered for kids. So they in movie theaters, only dubbed versions. In the TV, they only showed animes in children's show.
Mangas in Brazil, only those suitable for minors.

But things changed... and publishers/licensers finally realized there is a more mature market in Brazil too.
Unfortunately, most companies still treat animes and mangas as kids or teens stuff.
It's a mix of ignorance and misinformation.
But slowly things are getting better and clearer.

I only hope Singappore walks the same path... censorship, almost always is bad.
I'm specially against chopping off other people's works.

I'd consider an offense if I was the author of one of those.
They rather NOT put it on TV, or just put it in another time of the day, rather than do stuff like that.

If the anime is not suitable for the viewers at a particular time of the day according to the local TV ratings, why do they put it there in the first place?

It's all because anime isn't taken seriously, and most people who are responsible for licensing and displaying them on other countries doesn't even know with what they are dealing with.

Sometimes the censorship is so awful it's like cutting off sex and provocative scenes from a movie like Basic Instinct.

    phew... wrote too much. :P

Yea.. Singapore's censorship is pretty famous.. I remembered hearing this saying.. "The only ones that are not censored are the ones that are banned"
Singapore's censorship seems to be tougher on 2D as compared to 3D.. it seems..
I wonder why they didn't censor the kissing part between saito and louise in the promotional ads.. maybe its because its between a male and female(natural) and not between two females (unnatural??)..
so much for supporting cretivity and original...

Singapore basically just try to prevent children from being expose to those stuff at young age, although i doesn't stop determined heart. However, all this measure lower crime rate, slow down social and moral degradation in certain level, i believe.

That why you can walk in the night and not really have to worry about robber, murder or rapist luring round corner. I think it more of a parent to children relationship, as you mature in mind you are given more freedom and increase of responsibility for your own action.

awww thats not good, good thing you can watch it online uncut!
actually in USA there is slight censorship on anime with "adult" content as they call it. They either blur things out or cut them all together. They even blur out female naked ass, while there is nothing there. >.<

Yeah, I've noticed that too. Still, I'd like to mention that some dubbing companies are worse about the censorship issue than others. 4Kids is particularly bad, mostly because they presume animation is, well, for kids. The other major complaints people here have with 4Kids are: their tendency to edit episodes even when the content isn't offensive at all, and the exceedingly poor quality of their voice acting.

Still, the severeness of the editing is slowly getting pushed out. The companies that license this stuff are finally figuring out that a lot of anime actually isn't intended for little kids. Gee, what a concept. *eyeroll*

It's a desperate ploy by the government to prevent the traffic in GTA from becoming reality here XDDD

Princess no Rondo is on Arts Central?! I guess my country is more groovy than I thought! :D

Then again, if it's late night anime, the censorship thing is pretty dumb. The government underestimates the maturity of our youngsters nowadays :P

What I found to be ironic is the fact that when .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet was published in Singapore by Chuang Yi, it turned out to have a better English translation and less censoring than the version published by Tokyopop. (Then again, I never went beyond the first volume. That, and they called Ouka "Orca" in the first print.)

But, I guess that is what happens when you live in a country that does not only consider nudity to be a cultural taboo. That, and the sheer fact that Tokyopop does their own translations does not help either.

Besides, if I do recall... Japan is also not free from censorship either. So, to some, badmouthing the U.S. for not showing nudity on non-cable channels might not be the best thing. Because I do recall that both Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo had to be shown on two different channels due to their content. Plus, there were talks of what could and could not be shown on Japanese TV in terms of "physical content".

And my advice when it comes to this issue? Either go import DVD/Blu-ray or but a "Nice Boat". XP

Well 100% of anime I watch are downloaded from fansubbers... Yeah I would discourage people watching it off television anytime. Even if there is nothing to censor... I think the original sounds and voices are cooler. Started watching anime on TV though... then they were in mandarin and shown late at night lol... anyone know this too?
