Snap of my Mac having a Kernel Panic - the Mac version of the Blue Screen of Death.
The "Macs dont crash" thing is a load of bollocks.
How often is your computer (win/mac/nix etc) having kernel panics?

well i had my laptop sent to HP because my comp wouldn't boot after reaching a certain point where BSOD appears....

seemed that my AMD processor was the culprit for hurting my video card :(

wow BSOD acronyms still apply for mac @_@ but it doesn't look as annoying as PC windows BSOD >.>

Yeah, PC's BSOD's twice as annoying because it doesn't tell you what to do about it. It's just like, "OMG this ridiculously long number error occured you should freak out now!"

Of course, If it's coded then it can run into problems and have errors/crash. I'm currently running windows XP, although I'm planning on experimenting with leopard and linux very soon. Windows almost never blue screens on me, maybe once in 5 or 6 months. But I do have other problems with it, like the system will not load properly after a restart and it takes one extra restart to get it working properly. I need to reinstall soon, it's been at least 3 years since I last did a windows reinstall, that's the problem.

It seems that P-chan will have a problem once every year (just one little problem), that usually ends up throwing the Blue Screen of Death on the screen.
Otherwise my P-chan is in good health! (7^o^)b

Yeap. And mainly hardware too. You will run in to BSODs if you have hardware incompatibilities which is not the OS's fault entirely. Corrupted hard disks or installation of Windows may also result in it.
Other than that, my comp is pretty stable too and I leave it on 24/7.

I had my CPU fan seize a few days ago and didn't notice until a Windows BSoD. It looked like every other random memory addressing error until I stumbled on a web site mentioning a CPU overheat. Damn, that was frustrating.

Anyway, I'm on a shiny new laptop now so all is good! (And once Vista is customized properly, it's nowhere near as bad as everybody thinks it is!)

My home Macintoshes have crashed four or five times in the last three years. Twice when playing Halo, most other times when using a web site or a third party app like Skype.

They are not crash proof though better than Windows.

My work Macintoshes crash fairly often when using Final Cut Pro. Like every few weeks.

I think a lot of the crashes are to do with network problems.

I've had the big three all crash on me(win, mac, linux). Though in the case of linux I don't think it was actually the kernel's fault. Probably just KDE/gnome(depending on which one I'm using). I would say my system across both OSs (win, linux) crashes about one every three months in some way or another(kernel or not).

Oh and I'm also generalizing "freezing" and "crashing" (kernel at fault or not) in the case that your computer still becomes inoperable.

Don't really get BSOD on my XP machine. The move to a hybrid kernel was definitely a smart one. I think a majority of windows machines crash due to driver/hardware issues. This can't be avoided because the PC is an open platform. With a closed platform, such as Apple, they can market the "never crash" message because they've tested all their options and developed against them.

My mac's not having kernel panics period, but I have had trouble with certain programs. Dreamweaver commits suicide whenever I try to connect to a server through it, Photoshop will randomly die durring startup, and Stepmania has a weird bug where the program freezes if I unplug my speakers when the program's running. Oh,and WoW froze on me for the first time day before yesterday. But through all this, the OS itself's been stable.

I'm running Vista Ultimate via Bootcamp on my Macbook Pro, and I use it as often as I use OS X Tiger. Tiger's crashed on me once, but Vista blue-screens me on a fairly regular basis (every three to four weeks).

I'm pretty sure it's due to the fact that, Bootcamp aside, I'm still running Windows on Mac hardware. Not to mention that I'm running the last beta version of Boot Camp, not the final packaged with Leopard.

My "new" laptop came preloaded with Vista Ultimate... people at Dell are really stupid thinking THAT would work out. First time I started it, right after pulling it out of the box, testing media center, the very first video I tried to play... BSOD.
I had a month in hell due to that. Had to reset the thing almost 10 times a day.

Dell wouldn't send me a XP because they claimed my laptop didn't have the proper drivers for XP. Bullshit. I'm using XP on it right now. And it's running 1000 times better and more smoothly than Vista.

I know there are Vista success cases, but on my laptop it was worse than ME.

I've been using XP SP2 since it's release... and NEVER got a BSOD. Seriously. Never. To the point that if I didn't read BSOD reports on blogs every now and then, I might have thought that the problem was over.

About kernel panics on Macs... I think I only heard about it once or twice. How frequent are they?

They can actually be pretty common depending what you use your machine for. The occassional video edit or we browsing won't cause a kernel panic. You start getting into gaming or high end editing and you will see them more often.

Are you getting then that often Danny? You might want to have a look at this if you decide to troubleshoot. http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

I can't really comment on Vista since I only use it for light work. Vista is running on a boot camp partition on my iMac. Windows XP Pro SP2 is in nirvana on my MBP. ^o^ The really problem for Windows is not having sufficient hardware resources...

*nix systems(OSX included) are secure by design. Users do not run as root(administrator) leaving the system secure. There are proof of concepts out there but require you to download and then run the virus as root. Therefore, your friend is right and you would be wrong.

    Ha!

Using Lunux and XPpro, in most cases they do not crash. My XP laptop sometimes crashs when I have lots of apps open and undock from the docking station.

On windows: less than 1 per year since leaving ME, else too many to count per day...
On mac: just got an old iMac G3, and I've put Mac Os X 10.3 on it. Never had a kernel panic.
On linux: Once or twice my whole system froze, else I've seen kernel panics when I'm doing things that would normally cause a kernel panic (rebooting after a major update on Ubuntu (Gutsy to Hardy beta) or Arch (After a fresh install), or trying to use a boot floppy to boot an unrecognized cd-rom drive)

My old laptop with Win XP SP1 never really had much blue screens.
My current MacBook Pro has done it 2 or 3 times (including today) in the past 4 months ;p

I had kernel panic when I tried to add hardware where the documentation claimed it not to work with OSX. Took me like 3-4 crashes to figure out a pattern and hacked it to accept it (which then worked flawlessly).
Apart from that I only had one kernel panic. I think it was in OSX 10.2. Considering I own 4 macs (ok, only two are used on a daily basis) with OSX and that they are used for EVERYTHING then I say the OS itself is pretty stable.

For my BSOD, I had only one crash in a 1 Year period. As for Vista I had 4 software crashes in total, one happened when I first turned the computer on(I was pissed). Second happened after I tried to install a program, while the rest were random stupid crashes(lost so many files in the process).

Too bad OS X doesn't support -yet- local core dumps after a kernel panic. Some OSes (including even Windows) dump memory contents and other data locally if possible, so you can debug it later on.

I seem to be lucky. My main machine now is a packard bell windowns laptop and I only get to see a BSoD no more than 3 / 4 times a year. But, yeah, that religious belief that macs dont crash is utter bullshite
