Question time: Is this acceptable? If not why not?
How come its not OK for women not to shave - but OK for men not to?
Girls: Do you shave your armpits?
Boys: Do you shave your armpits?

I don't know if it's an issue of double standards. Do you think boys would refuse to shave their armpits if they knew that the majority of the female populous saw hairy armpits as a turn off. If I knew that the only way a woman would like me is if I shaved my pits I'd do it in a heart beat.

I believe things are the way they are because men in large are driven by looks, so shaved pits contributes to a woman's beauty. Women are by in large driven by emotion, so for them there are more important things in life than a man with shaved pits.

Fellow men out there: If the woman in your life whom you really love with all your heart stopped shaving her pits, would you stop loving her? Think about it.

I don't think there's a really good reason for why armpit shaving is demanded of women but not of men. Just one of those ever-changing norms.

I shave my armpits largely because it's more comfortable, but also because I think it looks better.

Actually they sometimes do, Danny. Of course there are fewer women that grow facial hair than those who don't, but I've seen women with quite a bit of facial hair before. It's the same thing with armpit hair, some women grow it and some women don't. Even with guys too, I've seen a few guys that barely grow armpit hair at all.

I do believe your right on that one. And that's quite interesting. Although it is seen from time to time I wouldn't say a whole lot of girls in the US have facial hair, whether or not that's due to them shaving/waxing/pulling it, I don't know. But it's interesting to know about the differences like these, although slight, between parts of the world.

Well. I was pointing out the absurdity of your question(in my eyes at least) by making my own ^^

But now that we're on that topic, women still do have slight stubble or "peach fuzz" which most people don't notice but they are mortified every time they see themselves in the mirror. A lot of girls use bleaching creams to make these hairs less visible.

You also have to remember the obvious item of women shaving their legs. While that may not be much of an issue with certain ethnicities, it certainly is one with caucasian women. The thing is, when you go your entire life of however many years without seeing a female with underarm or leg hair, it's shocking when you do see it. Does that automatically make it disgusting? Well, it shouldn't. If a human's body is designed to grow hair in certain places, who has the right to tell them their body's natural form is disgusting or unacceptable?

This also applies to women shaving their privates. In the United States, pubic hair is slowly coming back into fashion. For quite some time, however, it's been considered filthy and disgusting for a woman to have pubic hair. When you think about it, it really doesn't make any sense and is actually quite appalling. The act of shaving is essentially taking a blade to parts of your body, and I can't imagine anyone wanting a blade near their unmentionables. Of course there's also the option of chemical hair removal, which is at least as disturbing as shaving, if not moreso.

In an ideal world, people would accept each other for who they are and how they're built. Unfortunately, that is not the world we live in today.

          Completely agree.

As a woman I never understood why it's such a horrible thing if we don't shave. It's natural, it's MEANT to grow and be there. Over the decades as we progressed it just started being "disgusting" and unwanted for women to not shave and in my opinion has gotten out of control. It's almost like women are expected to shave everything now-a-days and if not you're repulsive. =/

Ok, have. In my later post on the topic I have said I don't shave my underarms. I don't need to though.

And yes, I have gone out in public without shaving my legs before as well. But once again, I can get away with that due to light hair color.

Why should other people's opinions that I don't know, and probably never will, affect me? Why should I be ashamed of something that comes naturaly that everyone has? It's just small hairs.. It's not like it's a hideous growth with bright colors, oozing puss.

So should men let their finger and toe nails grow incredibly long because its "natural"? Should we let our hair grow to the floor? Should we not clean or teeth? Humans elevate themselves above the animals by being smart enough to properly groom themselves. If a girl wants my love its shave the pits and legs or hit the road.

If men want long hair there is nothing wrong with it. That point has no basis in this really. Hair on your head is cut by the persons liking, not because it's viewed as "disgusting" to have.

The nail thing also doesn't stand up much. The reason letting nails grow is just a "woman" thing is because of the same reasons everyone believe they should shave. It's believed to be a femenine thing and not for men because we deem it that way. There are plenty of ways to keep your hygiene while still having the things mentioned above and there is nothing wrong with either. Just because someone's personal hygiene in those matters is bad doesn't make it unacceptable for others.

I've seen guys with long nails, doesn't bother me. I just wonder how they deal with them because anytime I start getting longer nails it's annoying and I have to trim them. So no, I don't have long nails because I can't stand them.

Now the teeth thing.. read above statements. Don't want to reiterate with just different subject.

Humans elevate themselves over animals, but they hold physical appearence WAY to high. There's being presentable while still in bounds of yourself, then going overboard just to look acceptable in the eyes of everyone.

Don't know why women have to shave, but it looks more attractive that way.

Why men don't shave? I guess that its because they perspire more than women and there's this thing that happens when the sweaty skin rubs over that other (I don't know the term but the skin will feel uncomfortable and turn red). But don't know if this happens in other countries, we have different climates. :P

oh yeah- it is called chafing, and it is a pretty common problem- I'm sure most people in the United States has had it at least once. I don't get it regularly, but I can get it if I am on an 8-9 hour shift and I am sweating like a beast. It sucks, it really does- it doesn't matter how fat or thin you are, it can affect everybody. The key to relief- talc.

I starting trimming my pits because of the chafing. The sweating during the summer would cause the hair to get all dry and scratchy causing chafing and rashes. I normal just trim the hair back with electric trimmer every couple of months or so. Also trimming the hair makes it so you don't sweat as much and I need all the help I can get since I am alergic to antiperspirants.

Actually, hair is supposed to obviously prevent skin from contacting itself if it is sufficient in quantity. If you have trimmed it then the sharp edges would irritate the skin when making contact, so thus a cycle is born.

So if one can chafe either way then it doesn't really matter what the stance is on shaving pit hair.

Now i must say this picture isn't really taken in a way to compliment the women in it.
If you photoshop the hair away it looks totaly different i think, i didn't do it but my imagination is a powerfull tool at that. ^^v
I agree with most of the views that less hair is more feminine and cute (?) but it also does serve it's purpose. I knew girls back in school who then started to shave and some of them would have sore armpits in summer cause they did sweat quiet a bit and so the hair there has its purpose. I never understood why only 1 out of 10 had this problem though. I even knew a boy who had it lol... he didn't grew hairs in the armpits and on a school trip he had to do the BBQ and was sweating like mad, then he had to take a break to "cream" his armpits lol... that was... yea... yummy sausages... ><
I personaly do shave as i dont sweat much unless i would do heavy sport excercises and i like to wear arm-free shirts or tops in summer - so yea.
But, everyone should be able to account for their own whats good for them, so if someone thinks s/he has to shave somewhere, shave away~~ if not, then don't. People should be able to be comfortable with themself in the first place and try less to fit a major image.
Okay, guess i am drifting of here in a study on human behaviour and other things but thats how i am, accept it or shave me away like nasty hair lol. ><

To be honest, nope. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones. My body hair is very light in color, blonde in most areas, so I don't really have to worry about it. I also barely have any underarm hair to begin with. I can get away with not shaving my legs as well and I normally don't during the winter since I wear long pants anyway.

I don't expect men to shave, and I kind of find it weird if they do. Although I do understand some men who shave when they're really fuzzy. But I don't really care either way. It's their choice if they want to or not. I just wish it was more acceptable for women like that. But I guess we're just expected to be silky smooth.. and all that other stuff.

Because of the image and ideas that have been burned into our brains, yes, she probably would be more attractive without the underarm hair. But hey, her choice and more power to her.

If I weren't so attatched to my furry legs, I'd shave them and walk around in a kilt--just because I could. :P As for armpits, I really don't see much of a need to shave mine at all. Of course it's acceptable for women not to shave their armpits, come on what the hell is with this question anyway? Women can do what they want. It's the very same thing as with make-up. No one needs to wear it, but sometimes they might look better with it. I you want to do it the whatever, but why should we make other look the way WE want them to look?
I bet women have more important things things to worry about than fitting the ideal stereotype. I sometimes grow a very long beard just for the heck of it. Should I not be allowed to do that, because most of the women probably think it's not pretty?

I am a girl. I shave everything below the neck, and tweeze my eyebrows. I think girls should have everything below the neck and eyebrows are individual (some people can look good with natural brows, some have weird shaped or unibrows and need shaving I just personally like to control the shape of my eyebrow. I think shaving your eyebrows off is icky looking though.) And I definitely think girls should shave 'that'.
As for boys/men I think that they should keep well groomed. This entails being CLEAN (shower daily and after exercise and you generally won't be too stinky) and trim all hair everywhere so it's neat. I don't care if guys shave their face or have a neatly trimmed beard both can be attractive. I tend to find guys with lots of body hair unattractive (back hair? large amounts of chest hair) but its something I think I could definitely overlook in someone I was in love with. Legs/Armpits/THAT, are supposed to be hairy on guys, and I'd be grossed out by a dude who shaved any of these. Like I said, trim, yes please, bald, no thanks.

IDK where the doubt standard comes from but I'm not offended.

I think she's pretty and I wouldn't crawl over her to get to Danny if we were all three in the same bed.

As it happens, I have never "been" with a girl who didn't shave her armpits, so I can't comment on the experience.

I have "been" with girls who did or didn't shave their other hair. On the whole I prefer unshaved and trimmed, though shaved is also nice. The worst is shaved and growing back stubble.

This is also a bad thing for guys' facial hair in intimate situations, so girls have told me.

As far as hygiene goes, hospital tests on preparation for surgery showed that shaving the operation area caused a worse chance of post-operative infection, since it causes micro-cuts that can more easily trap bacteria. Any hygiene issue is a culturally conditioned view, not based in reality.

I don't think it's sad as it is interesting, interesting enough to make you make this comment than withhold it and then make the community response less defined (for what reasons would people hold back in a Photo walk article and not here?). If everyone shared the same opinion or failed to open up, this thread would have been pointless. All of these comments reflect on social and personal values. It's interesting to see where and how people live and how they react.

Its more or less something to do with cultural aspects of beauty. The general trend of beauty now of days tends to follow an European view of what beauty should be; hairlessness which is attributed to youth.

If you look at a certain number of old European pieces of art depicting the Goddesses Venus, Aphrodite and Persephone (To name a few), you'll notice most of their naked bodies are hairless, fair skinned and slightly plump.

I do not have a good reason for it other than maybe I have been brain washed into believing that shaved legs and arm pits on a woman is attractive... so I find her less attractive to me personally than if she had shaved arm pits.

I am very sorry for being this shallow for no good reason :)

My wife shaves when she feels like it. I still find her attractive, but that is because of the life and relationship we have built together. I do not know the lady in the photo at all and can only make a rash snap judgment. So shaved arm pits are a general automatic preference for me I think.

i will be the first to admit, i find shaving to be a real chore, only reason why i do it is because my mum makes me hurhur guy here btw.

based on earlier comments, are you saying that dying your hair is a violation of intended nature as well? the point is, while we can argue that public hair are natural and therefore should be embraced, society doesn't see it that way.

it is understandable why women who doesn't shave would be perceived as disgusting and revolting. put it this way, not shaving shows that you are either lazy or apathetic about your looks or both, behaviours which are deemed unacceptable in today's society. on top of it, it's darn distracting to see something out of the norm.

I guess, "to each his own" could apply here...
Being healthy, happy and hygienic... that's all you have to have. It doesn't have to be bald either, just neatly trimmed... this applies to both sexes.
Strange enough, contrary to what I've typed above, I ensure that I shave everywhere 'below-the-neck' as another poster said. I'm proud of my eyebrows as they're well shaped even if they aren't pencil thin (Thank you Ryoko XD).

She has a very beautiful and expressive face, so that her hairy armpits just ad a sexy zing to her image. It's just a matter of taste- to shave or not to shave. Calm down, guys.

I prefer shaved pits, but I don't have much room to talk since I'm pretty hairy myself. Remember the body waxing scene in 40 Year Old Virgin? Yeah, kinda like that.
Also, growing up in the hippie-dippy East-Bay, the likelihood of your dating options being shaved or not was about 50/50. We all take it for granted that the folks we're interested in are going to put some time into personal grooming, especially early in a relationship, but personally, in a long term situation after a few years, it's not going to be a deal breaker.

Now unshaved legs on the other hand...

I prefer shaved but the hair under her arm isn't all that bad. I don't even like to see guys with hairy pits. I shave my own pits every few months and will probably start to shave em more often. They just feel cooler and more comfy when you do. ^_^ lol

People's perspective on what's acceptable are pretty much influenced by what society dictates (sad I know). As such, it's normal for a girl to shave her armpits and for a boy to not. If you go against everyone's views, you will spark negativity which this page exemplifies so well. And to answer your other question: I'm a male and I don't shave my armpits :)

Women should shave unwanted hairs as most of us guys want them to be as beautiful and desirable as they can be to us guys.

It really makes the world a better place when more women are beautiful and "well-kept".

Isn't it so inspiring just thinking that?

We men are very visual creatures.
If a female wants to repel us men, generally, go ahead and don't shave your unwanted hairs, neglect yourself. Those are called "Unwanted" hairs for a reason.
It's your call and good luck lady! You're gonna need it! And please stay away from me as I don't want any of my friends to see me with you. What would my buddies say to me? Oh, how horrible..

"Hey dude, I saw you with this d*mb*ss chick the other day with all the armpit hairs sticking out like spaghetti.
HAHAHA! That is so gross!! Wait till our friends hear about this..."

And even if she is my date for the night I'd probably say...

"HAHAHA.. That girl? Dude!? Do I look like I'm THAT desperate?!
    No friggin waaay! HAHAHA!
    I don't know her man."
