Here are the browser usage stats for dc.com for the last 18,000 users.
I would like to apologize to the 8% IE6 users as I have decided to drop support for IE6 meaning that the new layout will look like complete and utter poo.
While IE7 still has a load of bugs, at least its not as bad as IE6.
Sorry but need to move with the times. I admire how Apple ditched OS8 - a big change for the better.
Now if only Microsoft were willing to ditch the architecture that they just keep building on top of (win 95, 98, 2000, vista) and make that change for the better.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

Kinda amazed that there're more IE users than Safari users, but then again this is a limited sample from a relatively short period, from the sound of it.

And, staunch lover of Safari that I am, even I'm almost considering switching to Firefox...

Before IE was a core component of Windows it already had a growing user base. It was a joke of a browser from the start and still is one. No one though, especially the Netscape people, that any one would use it.

However, Microsoft gave it away like candy. If you went to computer trade shows you go a disk with IE on it, buy a magazine and you got a disk with IE on it, bought a computer book you got a disk with IE on it, etc... Microsoft included as part of all their software releases and that software used IE as the default browser.

People used it because they didn't know better and some will use it because it is Microsoft. That is what made it easy for Microsoft to not have it installed on every PC, but to make it a core part of every copy of Windows.

IE7 is actually better then people think, they fixed a lot of the problems that IE6 had, so it is safer to use now. I use Fire Fox on all my computers, but for the people I deal with that I know are tech-illiterate I just tell them to make sure they are using IE7. I've tried Safari both on Windows and Mac, I can't stand it I find it slower then IE and FF.

Indeed. More people should try Opera. It's hassle free and have built-in widgets that you will install anyway in firefox (making firefox heavier and Opera quicker on average). From my experience it renders pages quicker than firefox, too. But YMMV, my last three machines never liked firefox much for some reason.

ah, there are still does who still uses Firefox 2.0.0.16! but, it's kinda understandable, since the Firefox 3.0 still has some issues left.

i think the move towards IE6.0-less is a wise one, since there are some limitations to this site if you were to continue in the IE6.0 approach. CSS 2.0, PNG support, etc.

Keep up the good work, Danny!

One of the things I noticed it that Firefox 2 doesn't tell you to update it to 3. So most people who had a friend install Firefox for them or aren't really all in-tune with software releases have no idea Firefox 3 is out. Thats why my college and a few of my friend's colleges still are all running Firefox 3 ^^I

Give Microsoft a couple more years while the complexity of their current OS code grows. They'll realize it's unmaintainable and start from scratch. It's like all software cycles.

Interesting stats Danny, very different from the average.

Believe it or not, an average statistic on big news pages will show that Internet Explorer is the most used browser around.

Firefox 2 will probably come second.

I was wondering that too. I have Safari for Windows installed on both my Macs along with FF3. I agree Safari for Windows is so-so... To tell the truth I'm not fond of any browser experience in Windows.

Good job Danny, it's amazing what you've done. About dropping the support for IE6, it's a brave move, but I strongly support it, IE gives me headaches more than any other software in the world so it's good to see persons like you taking actions against that crap!

    Good luck

    I did look at the picture and was like "owch IE 6?" then read your text. ^^;
It's truely a big hassle to make layouts work in IE6 IE7 FF and them all... did it once and it drove me mad over a day... you don't want to see the CSS hacks used to make stuff which interferes between Safari and IE6 / IE7 in CSS work... so ugly.
But since that madness i droped IE6 as well from my list... i didn't say sorry either. :p People who still use it are at their own fault/mercy!?

I don't think Microsoft will drop legacy software support any time soon since a lot of applications are still using ancient code, let alone a lot of home-brewed applications many companies, authorities and organisations use. These wouldn't upgrade to a newer version of Windows if the applications they use and need won't run on it. Therefore dropping legacy support is not an option for them. It just doesn't make sense financially.

The only way (that I can think of) they could do this is by adding a virtual machine to their new operating system. This way their customers could run their new applications while running the outdated crap using the VM.

    I currently use Firefox 3. ^_^
