Fansubs

Me is not being watching fansubs so don't know what the quality of the translations are like but some of these are quite funny - more at Japanator. LOL at "Just according to keikaku" !
I understand that there are different groups fansubbing the same series. Does the quality vary much?
Any fansub groups that your fellow comrade should avoid? How many of you watch raws?
Original text from zoniku below.
Japanator posted a gallery of pictures from animes that got fansubbed & some of the results can be quite funny. Some might be alittle NSFW, but mostly just due to wording.
Ever experienced a unique fansub moment?
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

Some of these are pretty funny, but there are a few where I think the fansubber didn't make any kind of mistake.

What do you expect from groups calling themselves "yourmom" or "n*gger"...
That being said, some serious groups take the whole "stay faithful to the original" too literal. True, some stuff should stay untranslated (best example being honorifics... why some people decided to keep those out, I have no idea - I'm looking at you Tokyopop) but only translating half the text and keeping words that have perfectly fine english counterparts is just ridiculous.
(I'll admit though, I've seen some seriously funny t/l notes over the years, most of them being stabs at crappy speedsubbers)

Indeed a lot of the time Japanese translated to English wont make a whole lot of sense (Engrish) but it's up to the translator to make those sentences coherent, which includes sayings/proverbs/puns. Anything can be translated, it's just there is a tendency to translate word for word instead of looking at the sentence structure and then deciding how to place those words or which words to replace to make it understandable.

When I think of horrible fansubs, I think of Aquamarine, which did the last few episode of Aria the Origination. I'm grateful since that let me finish the series, but at the same time, subbing President Aria the cat's nonsensical squeals and noises was completely unnecessary.

yes indeed lots of fan subs have funny lines once in a while.
good thing i know enough japanese to understand what they are really trying to say... most of the time atleast
Some of the mistakes are the result of translation from scripts, sometimes the scripts are in languages other than Japanese

Well alot of fansubs do great jobs as far as I know, I mean they don't have anything obviously messed up in them, for example Eclipse fansubs.
However the ones that try to put speed over quality, I can see how they can make mistakes.

Fansub quality vary a lot...
I'd like to know japanese so I don't have to depend on fansub translations.
But I have to say some fansubs do a better job than official translations. Specially when there's lots of japanese culture and obscure referentes on animes.
But I did get very pissed off with some fansubbing jobs.
I HATE when fansubbers think they have the right to add personal comments and stupid jokes.
Yeah, I know they are doing it for free, and I pay nothing to get it, but I hate it anyways.
There was an anime... I can't remember the title now, but it's already kinda old... which the ending of the series was completely ruinned by the only fansubber that took it because he picked the last episodes to make gritty remarks saying how this or that thing was stupid, how the ending was bad, how it seemed the author ran out of time and money so he had to put a sudden stop to the anime, etc etc.
Also, there's One Piece. I started watching it as soon as it was released.
At the time, there was only this HK fansubbing group that started ok, and then something happened, and the subtitles became incomprehensible.
And I really mean TOTALLY incomprehensible. I'm not talking about "DO NOT WANT". I'm talking about like 5 minutes with nothing, and then suddenly they added some words that didn't mean nothing, and then back to no subtitles.
And that is the reason I never ended up watching One Piece. I loved the series, but I dropped it because of poor fansubs. I did get the whole series again, but have to rewatch more than 100 episodes to get things straight, so it'll be difficult to get back to it.

i've seen partial subs as well. to me, if it's not completely subbed, it shouldn't be at all.

I onli watch Chinese sub, not much problem with Chinese sub compare to the error in English sub I remember watching Brain Powerb in English sub and tat was the reason i dare not watch English sub anymore, they are terrible.....
College Student
Usually you see "lol engrish" moments in Chinese/HK bootlegs, or when you get an English fansub group that translates from another sub that was made in a non-Japanese language. I remember the "mass naked child event" (see AJ sub of a GiTS ep) and "backstroke of the West" (see: Revenge of the Sith) as some memorable lines.. though I don't have any pics.
UOIT student
for me, the expectation is lower for those (chn bootleg) so basically i'm not affected by engrish as long as for the most part i understand what has gone on during most of the rest of the show. difference comes when it is a sub group that is supposed to be decent.
and on the topic of poor english....
i know this next rant has gone about partially because of the internet but i get frustrated seeing people mixing up the [you/you're] , [there/their/they're], etc... also using the word [of] when they mean [have] or ['ve] which is have but shortened to use of contraction.. i've also heard that contractions were once the big NO but they became absorbed into society acceptance. however, i believe that can only be the case if it was used properly and used without changing the meaning of the words. but now with these errors that keep showing up here and there without anyone correcting them (i think teachers and parents are at fault for this), the problems can only get worse and confusion can arise even moreso..
and now, here is the [have] problem as example:
"I could not have done that." --> "I could not of done that." my question there is it feels like there is a word or phrase missing because [of] is used [something of something]. japanese equivalent is the particle [no] which still has something before and after. something that connects the two in a sort of relationship. however, the word that was connected to [done that] was [not] or [could not] but i don't see how [not] or [could not] fits into a 'parent-child' relationship. "I could not see how the kick of the monk did that." I (person speaking) ; could not (<--has inability to perform action-->) ; see (the action connected to previous words) ; how (the degree of the following to perform or not perform something) ; the kick of the monk [the kick (an action) ; of (<-- belongs to -->) ; the monk (the noun that the words before 'of' belong to)] (the item of measurement by the previous word 'how') ; did (a verb meaning the action of performing a certain task in past tense) ; that (an article referring to the previous word which is an unknown action, most likely referring to the result of the action)
UOIT student
whew... that was a mouthful..
thing is, i have a lot of built up distress every time i see the mistakes like that. i know there are a lot of worse things. i posted in a soul eater thread a while ago about how one group decided to subtitle episode 16.. it was the fastest group to subtitle it and i'm not sure where the group got the whole marriage/wedding deal but it was way out of context. although surprisingly, most of the rest of the episode aside from awkward moments of marriage/wedding was actually correct. the doctor/witch's name was Medusa and there is one point in the show when one should be able to hear Me Du Sa clearly even if they say they could not hear it in the other places as clearly. they even messed up the part where Maka visits Medusa for a check up because of what happened in the most recent fight. and not just that, there was probably one or two lines where words were left out with something like <fill in here> because they didn't know what the word or words were, or maybe how those parts of the sentence should have been translated. now the manga is much further than the anime and there are correct or suitable translations lying around yet it seems they were too lazy to check on those to help with translation. they could also have checked prior episodes for ongoing plot, because they definitely shouldn't have written marriage or wedding in any of it since that is way out of context..
i just took a look at episode 17 by some fansub group and it was exchanging lines for other lines and wasn't even a parody thing (some groups enjoy making parody subtitles every now and then to make fun of things. or even april fools jokes sometimes. [check out prince of tennis.. i was fooled by them xD forget the episodes and group name though.]) i didn't finish episode 17 nor skip through it because i just can't take the errors.

Yes I have experienced really bad fansubs, one pretty resentle for Zero no Tsukaima. That's why I keep to SS Eclipse's, and Menclave's stuff. From the top of my head I don't remember if it was Shinsen or Nyoron who did a not quite correct translation of Gundam 00.

bad translators...sometimes I choose subbers based on how they format their subs and word choice. I don't leik subbahs who don't care to use proper words or even consider try suitable sentence structure.
I personally hate subbers who put TOOOOO many TL notes and flash them like it's illegal to be seen. And yes, I've experienced bad subs >.< something like "I like Traditional Japanese woman" from Metantei Loki Ragnarok :/ way too bizzarre.
I enjoy Shinsen, AFK and AE Subs though it gets harder to get their releases once an anime gets licensed/ quite slower in realeases

Fansub quality is all that bad anymore. There's always the errors in translation, even minor ones. Picking up the subbers using the word 'rounin' when they could've replaced with 'unemployed' in the first episode of Sekirei. But I guess they make up for their flaws in the speed of their service. It's free so what more can you ask more?
Whenever I want to see the next episode, very desperately, then I'll watch the RAW and somehow understand as much as possible.

I just take what I get. I have great respect for the guys who fansub. I pay nothing, they get nothing, and they still respond politely to guys who say, "WTH is the new ep?? The RAW was out a day ago!" ^^;
I can't stand people who think that just because the raw came out hardly a day ago. It takes time to translate & edit the video to include the subs.
Student and full-time otaku
Jup, some groups are definetely better than others, although it seems that other people are way more picky about it then me. What annoys me most is when they use 'fancy' fonts and obviously typos. Some people tend to complain that the translations are wrong sometimes, but seeing as I don't know Japanese, I can't verify.
It's not that hard to find the best group out of the bunch for a series these days with sites that list the groups doing a series and people having ratings on them.
Groups like Chihiro and Yourmom are well known shit subbers.

In my country, not enough teams translate from original version. Most of them translate from english. It's awful. Maybe there's kid because they overreact when you just point a letter missing.

I usually watch Chinese subs, because they come out much quicker than English subs in general. Groups with good reputations and big teams have pretty good qualities. I do watch English subs sometimes when there is no choice, but I haven't really met one except this:

I watch raw episodes, but I prefer watching it by a fansubbed, although I'm very satisfied looking at cute subtitles, and my ear, well doesn't hear much of the voice of the seiyuu, so I prefer ffs it, and they do entertain me than the usual script. Fan subs!
I used to watch fan subs. I even helped out a few groups. I stopped helping out because I didn't have the time to commit to them. I don't watch fan subs that much because I am now like out of touch and I don't know what new groups are good. Well, there's that and I am already dealt with so many tasks now.
To answer your questions Danny,
1. You bet.
2. Like I can remember any right now.
3. I watch raw episodes if it's a show I want to see in an instant or the series only is shown raw. I see some dorama series raw though. (I saw a few episodes of "Nodame Cantabile's" live dorama raw. Yes, I had an old channel that showed this raw. I don't know if another channel I know of has it though. I highly doubt it.)
