R4

Nintendo has made an official statement that they and 51 other software makers are suing the producers of the R4 and other similar devices which allow homebrew games (as well as not-so-homebrew games) to be played on the NDS.
These devices are known as "Majikon" [マジコン] in Japanese but is there an English term?
Will be interesting to see if they can ever stop these devices from being sold/manufactured.
Do you have an R4 or similar device? I dont own a PSP but I get the impression from all the patching that its difficult (bothersome) to play homebrew on the PSP?

Nah, It's really easy ^__^ I done it at home myself with no problem actually.
And it actually allows you to have such cool gameboots (a short movie shown when game is starting on teh psp, default one is a crappy psp logo >_<")

Homebrew is great! I have CFW installed on my PSP and am lovin it =). Games load much faster from memory sticks compared to UMDs.
Using homebrew apps and as well as the not-so-homebrew games on psp is very easy. Actually it opened up some of the hidden potentials of the psp. It even made the psp much more creative and appealing with the custom themes, custom gameboots and whatnot. Also, it made the psp brick-safe.

PSP's where actually bricking cuz of the ppl trying to flash it...
And it just recently that they found a way to repair all the bricks.
But yeah it does make psp more appealing and sony is even using ideas from the custom firmware in its own official one :D

They just started producing a new motherboard, that blocks you from being able to use the unbricker and custom firmwares (again). I was thinking of picking up the R4 when I saw it a few times being sold in Akihabara, but I've read of fakes and wasn't sure if they were legit. :(

I've owned an R4 for a little over a year now, purely for "homebrew" purposes of course.
I'd have to admit, after buying the R4, I've only bought one or two games for the DS, purely due to the preorder bonus or because I liked the company that made the game.
The PSP, I've had for about 2 years and bought off of a friend AFTER I patched his. I found that the PSP was much more useful for running homebrew, for real, than playing... bootleg. Fortunately, it was relatively easy since he never played the thing and so the firmware was still on 1.0. I guess patching the PSP would be more difficult for later firmware revisions, but if you have made a Pandora battery and a magic memory stick, then the whole process isn't that hard after all.
I just recently bought a DSTT, and have been enjoying it.

If I remember correctly, the chronological order of Majikon released should be
SuperCard > ? > R4 > DSTT > N5

I bought an M3 Real, I'm using it with the English version of M3 Sakura firmware(unofficial since it was only released in Japan).
OMG, M3 Sakura is so awesome, it still needs to be improved though... homebrew can be a hit or a miss. R4s are so outdated I wonder why people are still buying them.

Mainly because they're stable. Bought an N5 for my friend and even with the updates, it won't run most games properly.

no actually i think its easier to flash your PSP and play homebrews all you need is the custom firmware and the pandora kit if anything goes wrong and both are easy to use and free you can find tutorials all over the net fir them

lol, i'm using R4 for my NDS, and it's good enough, well, never use any homebrew but VNDS tho

PSP is slighty more difficult but nothing the above average person couldnt figure out with a little online tutorials. R4 one is so easy my little sister could operate it. By the way, they're called flash carts i think. I won't lie. I'm a hardcore pirate and your jedi mind tricks to make me feel guilty won't work.

PSP homebrew setup is amazingly simple. Now with the new time-machine program you can set any firmware you want at any time, with a simple config reboot. Plus the latest firmwares allow you to load up pretty much any emulation (I play ps1, genesis, and snes games on my PSP) from oldschool to limited newschool games.
Nothing beats being able to play vagrant story while on the road.

Yep, cfw allows you to install homebrew apps like popsloader so that you can play your PS1 games without compatibility issues.

PSP homebrew and not-so-homebrew is pretty much easy, since its pretty much on the software level.
But you do need to use a special battery/memory stick prepared for this purpose for custom firmware'ing your PSP from store-bought stock. After that wait till a firmware gets hacked/decrypted and flash it using regular firmware installation procedures.

Guess my little cousins would be sad; they just got a whole card full of games for their b-day. Never even knew what this R4 deal was about till now.

I own a PSP for 2 years by now, and I am pretty satisfied, with hardcore games like Monster Hunter, Gundam and the upcoming Macross.
The process of patching it is easy for a person who really read tutorials. It is similar to unlock an iphone, it is hard for those who don't know where the ROOT folder is located ( yes, some people ask that a lot ), but for those who have a little expertise like configure a wireless router, the task is easy.

Yep, some people don't know even basics like ROOT... F'ing sad...

Haha that's quite true. Most people tend to be lazy to do their research. There are plenty of sites with guides etc. on how to install cfw for your PSP. People do not know the location of root is like asking them to find any key on a keyboard ^^
Student, Gamer, Part-time EFSF Pilot
I got so used to it that i can install a custom firmware in a PSP in around 10min ^_^'
I use that to mainly put some emulators on my unit - some SNES, some Genesis and even GBA. Also, I sometimes do download some iso's either to try out the games or to play the games while I wait for them to arrive on my mail (when I really can't wait for a new game).

The R4 and all similar devices are called "Flash Carts" as far as I know. There are tons of others, including Supercard, Cyclo DS, and M3. The R4 people will most likely make some other sort of cart similar to the R4, just call it something different, then release firmware that's compatible with both.

I ran homebrew on my psp for a while but I accidentally flashed a Sony firmware over it and have bee to lazy to go back.

The PSP custom firmware stuff is way over my head. Everyone tells me it's so simple, but I when try to read the tutorials for it, it just sounds like alien speak to me. Especially since I have one of the newest official firmwares installed, which makes it even more complicated.

Actually, knowing how trigger happy Nintendo is with their lawsuits, I'm surprised it took them this long to take action against R4. But if they had taken this long to do it, it seems the case will have little chance of succeeding against R4. Or maybe Nintendo will simply drag on the case and kill R4 by draining them of money to fight the case. Nothing is ever too dirty when it comes to money.
NDS seem to sell crazy amounts in Japan every month. I wonder if it'll ever reach a saturation point. In any case, I don't own any handheld console.

I hiss at my friend when he brags about his homebrew PSP and his homebrewed-DS. (Partially out of jealousy that he gets to play the Digimon Ranch game and others like it...and partially out of the fact he's a naughty boy!!!!)
Homebrew PSP have to be pretty old if I'm correct? The first batch or something, before they got the software right so you couldn't edit/change it. He got his off ebay with a Halo theme on it, he's changed it since I believe. :sigh: I'm glad Nintendo are suing these people actually. I don't like the idea of changing my DS just so I can play stolen/copied games on it... I'm paranoid of it going wrong lol. (I still have the old-(retro as I'm calling it)DS.

PSP is generally harder to crack (requires more manpower and thought), but only needs to be done once. With the R4, you will need to get periodic updates as nintendo adds code to newer games to stop the R4 from working. The worry is that if they shut down the makers of R4, the updates also stop.
But this is nothing new from nintendo. their latest wii updates broke the freeloader disk which allowed users to play legit copies of games from other regions on their region locked wii.

I can understand why Nintendo is doing this of course but I personally love my modded DS. I can download all the games I want as well as use the programs made for it, LIke Color, where you can draw on your DS, some guys have made amazing looking pictures from that.

I've got a similar device for my Gameboy micro, and its not like I don't own legit games, its just that some games are either impossible to find as they are long-since deleted, or that even second-hand they are so rare they fetch ridiculous prices on ebay and the like and I'm not able to afford/ justify spending that much cash on a game :-p

Ah the notorious R4. Most of my friends in Hong Kong who own an NDS have R4 in them. They run faster and more efficient than the other cards, and modding makes things easier and convenient for them. Too bad R4 is nearly completely sold out over here, and the government has sanctioned against modded gaming platforms, but I doubt it would have much effect; the customs are busy trying to crack down on pirated computer goods and CDs/DVDs already.

PSP is actually pretty damn easy to patch up, its only intimidating because there are like 200 ways to go about doing it, so when you start reading guides on how to do it you tend to read multiple at once, so its just a good idea to stick with one only.
I had an R4, but i really regret getting rid of my DS and R4 now, I plan on picking them up again. I don't think Nintendo will have much luck with the case over here on it, even though we have a bunch of laws there are always exceptions made. I suppose the Wii isn't printing money fast enough for Nintendo. Had Nintendo not had the DS right now, I wouldn't even like the company at all.

I'm plugged into both departments.
I have a DS and I bought an R4 soon after getting it. But, I don't really play my DS all that often, and I don't see any games I'd actually BUY for it (I mainly bought it in the first place for Phoenix Wright).
As for PSP, I've been a self-proclaimed expert on the thing since the 1.50 days. I've been running emu's and iso's as long as I can remember, but out of respect, I DO buy the games I really really like (even tho I have an 8GB card to put pirates on). I love the PSP more as a media station and to play games from every other system than I do the PSP games, but sometimes things come along I'll get hooked on. I've been into DJ Max Portable (1/2) for about a year now.

I have custom firmware on my PSP and I bought an R4 for my sister's NDS Lite. As a result, they've both been converted to PMP's. You can play homebrew on the PSP as easily as any UMD game once you have some hacked firmware installed (which is actually pretty easy to install).

About this... I'll just copy and paste the comment I posted on Kotaku:
Kudos for Nintendo, for officialy not supporting the device, but bringing the subject again to the news.
Free publicity for the DS.
People who have a DS and don't have an R4 will have a reason to get the dust of their DSs.
And people who don't have DSs and didn't know about R4 will now have one more reason to buy it.
And if they win the Lawsuit, not only they will scrape some money of it, but also won't kill the carts since there are tons of them around, with even better quality than the R4.
But we all heard stuff like that before, right Sony?

Also, yep, I have an R4, and I have a hacked PSP.
PSP is a little more difficult to work the magic, Danny is right. But not impossible. I did it by myself, and am no electronics expert.
Another thing: I bought both BECAUSE I was able to do such things... run homebrew stuff.
And I don't mean pirated games.

PSP with CFW is awesome. I can go back and play any ps1 games that I missed when i was a kid. Plus there's a capcom and neo geo arcade emulator, so it means Marvel vs Capcom and Metal Slug on the go. There's just a lot homebrew things you can do with the psp =)

I had DSOne V1 for some time and recently bought DSTT. To make things worse I have almost all games ever released on DS (in "homebrew" version") including Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 2. i have PSP and NDS, but for some reason i dun use neither R4 or homebrew... not because i have extra money to spend on original cart... but
for R4 -> indeed its so simple and run smooth, u just need to transfer the ripped cart.data to mini SD card... and viola u can play the game, but i prefer to save my save data securely on original cart as i dun play lots game on NDS either
same for R4... i dun use homebrew on PSP, because it brothersome (i dunno for sure how about latest homebrew)... and i need large capacity memorystick duo to load the game.data
