I don't think it's fair to judge a movie before it even comes out. Whether this is a good idea or not is immaterial. The execution of said idea is what matters in the end and you can only see that once you've watched it.

For example, comic book movies are often looked down upon because of their sometimes shallow and simplistic plots that it sometimes seems that they were just made to sell merchandise. Recent offerings however are turning that trend over and is making them critics rethink their views. Batman Begins, The Incredible Hulk, Ironman, and of course THE DARK KNIGHT are prime examples IMO.

No, it's fair. We're the jaded viewing audience and if they can't convince us beforehand, then we don't buy tickets. It might be less fair to shun it after it's been out a while if the response is good.

Besides, many of us were permanently scarred by that live-action Hong Kong steamer from 1989: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122050/

Then WHAT IF this one turns out to be good? then all that bashing and criticizing backfires and you eventually say something like "I thought it was bad but now I'm proven wrong" or something. Who is being laughed at now? It's basically the old saying "Don't judge a book by its cover". It's also up to YOU to be convinced or not by them. Caveat Emptor essentially. Looks can be deceiving my friend, never look at something in face value. Always lower your expectations and never expect perfection.

And that previous live action adaptation? Case-in-point: Joel Schumacher's Batman & Robin and Batman Forever. Those were bad. In fact many people would want to unwatch those movies. A long 8 years later, Batman Begins shows up and now The Dark Knight. Those two now are being praised as two of the best if not THE best comic book adaptations yet. Why? because different people handled them. Different people means they won't make the same movie or use the same style. So I won't put that previous Dragon Ball movie in the equation if I were you.

I just want to make it clear though that I'm not saying this new movie will be good. I will watch and then I'll decide for myself. If this one turns out bad then good for you, but if this turns out good then Stephen Chow gets one over you. Spare yourselves the regret of getting ahead of yourselves. Also when this one gets out, I would bet that almost all of you will end up watching it in the theaters anyway, which is what the studios want in the end.

no offense, just my 2 cents.

By the by though, No 18 is HOT stuff in the movie. No 17 looks kinda emo though.

Think we all agree that this movie is a horrible idea, when I first heard about it being live action, first thing I thought about was giant gold colored foam wigs. But there is something good about this movie. It will be forever the standard that another Dragon Ball or Dragon Ball Z cannot be any worse then this. Personally I think it should be pure CG, like Final Fantasy Advent Children.

Considering that the plot so far(Goku in school? come on Holywood ;_;) seem to have been written by a 3yr old (no offense for 3yr olds), i would say that a change of name would be better for the movie since the only Dragonball in the movie seems to be the name and the balls themselves.

I think of it this way. What else were you expecting it to be or look like? Would you prefer a ultra americanized version of dragon ball, or them generally trying to stay as true as possible to the original concept. I'm sorry, but It's hard for me to imagine a 6 year old child actor running around knocking cars down and giving a good performance. We will see what happens, I'm not bashing it till I see it.

Wow, such negative comments and 1 positive-neutral comment. Honestly I can't wait to see how they pull this off with the advancement of video technology and visual effects. I thought the story of the recent Transformers movie was hands-down lame ass bullcrap. I enjoyed it still non-the-less because of the visuals and the toys that came out. Why is it that when an anime is ported to real-life movies the reactions of the majority of the anime fans are negative and only a handful support the idea. I'm not blaming anyone if they didn't pull it off, it could be bad acting, bad director, low budget so on and so on. But still it is amusing to see that such an old relic be revived with a 2nd live-action movie be revived when the interest isn't there already. This could pave the way for anime being converted into movies in the future. If anyone recalls NANA...the second movie was crap but the first one was good. So I don't see the reason why people would actually thrash this movie. I grew up with DB - DBZ - DBGT, it'd be nice to see what they did with such a classic anime.

Wow!! I can see from the posts that alot of people hate this idea and the manga/anime/comic turn to live action movie thing. Personnally I don't have any expectations but I think the costume on the poster is kinda nice. They kept the turtle symbol!!I never get tired of seeing all this trashing about Dragonball in general. I really like that universe and what Akira Toriyama did with the manga. Most people around where I live just don't know about it or totally hate it. So my guess is that since so many people hated it already I don't think this movie is gonna be appreciate it. I grew up with the old Dragonball anime and manga in the late 80's and 90's so it'll be nostalgic to hear those character names on-screen since... long time ago. I would've liked it more if the cast and crew was Nihon-jins but... gotta deal with it. Wow, that's a long post for nothing!! Peace girls and boys...

Holy Crap. Don't watch it as a way to punish those investors and producers of this piece of shit. Make them lose lots of money. I don't care how you are going to change the plot from the original, but Goku definitely needed to be an asian guy. Like can we use an asian guy to portray King Arthur or Robin Hood, the answer is NO, right. This movie is going to be a joke.

it appears the US will do worse to the whole Dragon Ball series than it did back in 1997 when the series first came here. With the cartoon they decided to make it all cuddly and stupid so little kiddies could enjoy it... this movie might not be any better than that ~_~
