200,000 fishing boats didn't leave their docks earlier this week to protest against the increasing gasoline prices. In some areas, gasoline costs double what it used to a year ago meaning that many fishing companies end up being in the red just by fulling up their boat.
The government don't seem to be able to (or willing to) do anything about it. Could this mean that all we see are egg in sushi restaurants?

When I first came to Japan, I could not really eat sushi so used to choose the egg sushi all the time. Now I'm used to it and have even acquired the taste for wasabi.

What do you normally choose when you go out for some sushi?

The government can't do much about the gasoline prices. Ok, they could lower the gasoline taxes or subsidise it, but this doesn't solve the problem in the long run.

What really could help a little might be disposing of the stock exchange speculators bumping up the mineral oil prices or the nationalization of the energy market, but this would probably go a little too far.

Over here it's not easy to get your hands on sushi so I'm not choosy. ^^

Wow... If you had not said "the state I live in" in the next post, I would have assumed you lived in a foreign nation. I have NEVER had problems finding California rolls. I mean, Whole Food Market (an organic store thingamajig) has California and salmon and that's it. Haha. I love California rolls, I started with that back before I was brave enough to try raw fish.

P.S. I hope that "cali roll" is short for California Rolls, because otherwise I will be embarrassed and hide under the table.

Ummm, and even if they did, we wouldn't tell you because we have no desire to poison you. I mean, ewwwww, Costco or Walmart FRESH food???? Blah. At least with Whole Food Market it's made right in front of you so you can HOPE for fresh fish.

And you should recommend to your parents that California Roll should be added to their menu. The reason being (and the reason why it's so common in all the restaurants) is it's cheaper than almost any other version of sushi, since it's just imitation crab, and thus it will improve their profit margin feeding us heathen Americans. Grin.

California rolls don't typically have raw fish. There is usually kanikama (imitation crab sticks), kuri (cucumber), and avacado.

California rolls are more of a U.S.-japanese concoction, and from what I hear, are not found much in Japan.

This maybe presumptuous, but it sounds like your folk's restaurant maybe the only fresh sushi area your area for miles around. As I doubt sushi is a widespread delicacy in Utah. I always find supermarket pre-packed sushi to be pretty gross, so the concept of costco/walmart sushi sound pretty unappetizing to me.

Hmm, I'm not sure if I have any favorites at the moment. I've been told that the best way to tell if a sushi restaurant is any good is to try their tamago (at least, that's how it's called here- the sweetened omelette type). If they get that right, generally they'll get the rest right. That's been mostly true from my experience, at least for my palette.

I am a really big fan of masago and sake so I get lots of them. We have salmon farms here so sake isn't that expensive. The only thing I will not touch is the california roll (with avocado and imitation crab, ick)....

when you say egg sushi, do you mean fish eggs like tobiko and masago or do you mean the sweet chicken egg type of sushi?

First thing I usually attack when eating sushi has got to be the Salmon/Sake. Tuna/Maguro follows closely behind. But the best sushi/sashimi I've ever tasted is Otoro! The taste and texture is godly!

Now SUSHI is something I can talk about! Oh my, believe me when I say I have a major weakness for Japanese food, and especially for sushi.

Back in the old days ("when I had to walk 5 miles uphill both ways in blizzards to get to school", etc.), I was too chicken to try raw fish. This was actually not because it was raw, but because I never liked cook fish (homemade or restaurant), so I assumed raw would be either the same or worse. But I loved California rolls, so I would get Bento boxes everytime my mother took me to a japanese restaurant.

Then when I grew older ("dem youngsters, why I aught to take them over my knee and remind them of their manners, I do declare!") I was dared/rediculed into trying tuna roll, and realized there was a vast difference. Now I have many types that I know I like, including the American bastardation of Sushi (California, Philidelphia roll), Buffalo Volcano roll (hard to find, if you're in Las Vegas, they have this there and it is INSANELY good!), Rainbow rolls, Masago roll, Tuna, Tempura Shrimp Rolls, etc. I don't care for roe (fish eggs) type items, so remove those.

I wish I could experiment more with Sushi, but regretfully Sushi is very expensive here in the U.S., and as such I tend to stick with what I know I like, unless it's a buffet type restaurant, and then I experiment (usually with mixed results).

And Wasabi is mandatory with sushi in my opinion. Sushi without wasabi is like wearing a shirt without pants...

huh surprising in NY a lot of the Sushi restaurants are also owned by chinese people. Dont get me wrong most of them make great sushi. There are dozens of japanese owned ones also but most of them are in Manhattan.

I never liked the taste of sushi. Maybe it's because I'm used to eating my seafood cooked XD

If oil prices continue to rise like this, we'll be a step closer to a World War. It'll probably end up like Gundam 00 but minus the mobile suits! Everything will be in chaos. Scientists must find an alternate source of fuel fast! Hybrid cars are being made but they're still in that stage of infancy.

I also think that the government does not have control on the oil prices. They can do little to maintain the price of oil unless if that country is f**king rich in oil like Dubai O_o

I love egg wasabi, so I don't see a problem with that XD
But this rising of prices is not going to be resolved that easily with a strike. Nothing can be done if it was the country supplying the gasoline that raises the selling price.

On a sidenote, I love wasabi. but I have to be careful not to put too much at one go. It's like having someone kick the interior of your nose.

About the strike... I don't think the Government can do much to reduce gas prices, but maybe they could introduce some politic measures to reduce taxes and stuff. It's happening here in Brazil and some other western countries if I'm not mistaken.
