There's no proof that Rolo did it. All he did was use his geass, perhaps to even try and protect her from someone from behind. In the end we don't know who killed her.

While that's true, there's a lot of problems trying to deny it:
1.- Lulu didn't use the Geass on Lolo because he didn't need it since he bought the "you're my little brother" speech, and if Nunnaly becomes once again his little sister, he'll have no place, and thus when Shirley told him that she wanted to bring Nana back, he used the Geass. Giving him a mothif for the killing.
2.- He used the Geass, his preferred method to kill people. Well, that's debatable though. And if he did use the Geass to protect her, she wouldn't have died (he used the Geass and killed the guy that tried to attack her) or two bodies would have appeared (he couldn't use the geass to for example stop a knife flying towards her, but the assassin would have get paused and Roro would have killed him/her). The third option would be that there was a backup assassin besides Orange, and if that's true then I don't think there was no other evidence.
3.- If he didn't do it, why run? He knew where Lulu was, so if he was going to meet him, they would have met before he arrives to Shirley's place.
4.- If he didn't do it, why did he just leave Shirley to die in there? He could at least have tried to help her. Of course, the fact that she never said anything about her dead means that one can't just go and deny it, giving us a lot more room for speculation.
5.- Who else could have done it? Unless they just make a new character to appear on the story and give him a little importance by killing her, there isn't nobody else who could have targeted her and not anyone else.
Of course, I can't say that he's really responsible, but if he isn't it means that I just felt for a "totally awesome unexpected plot twist" ¬¬. In fact now that I think about it, maybe it's just what they want us to think, that it was Lolo so we just kinda dismiss another option which will later be revealed as the correct one.

1 - lulu is smart, he uses everything as it needs, nothing more, and nothing less, and still keeping a card in his sleeve to face thge worst case scenario. That's why if he used it on rollo, he won't have anymore card if rollo goes backstabbing him. On Shirley case, nothing but geass could erase her memories.
2 - geass is a power to control other's mind, not things, and neither people's life. Sending a person with a power as strong as orange, and was under the command of V.V. i wouldn't think there would be another. Rollo couldn't think like lelouch and he oftenly took self-decisions, to be honest, controlling people like this with just your brain is really tough.
3 - good point, unless he feel bad afterwards, knowing that lelouch is facing a trouble means he got to save lelouch ASAP, running away was a bad choice. Unless some other assassin really appears and killed shirley, also driving rollo away, now that's make some sense.
4 - except for my no.3 answer, as for he often took self-actions, he might only think that more people knowing zero's real identity, means his onii-chan would get more troubles. He didn't have real memories with shirley before, and he couldn't trust her.
5 - ask sunrise or CLAMP -_-

The other time I felt sad from this series is when euphie died, but I was happy seeing how lelouch was tormented from it hehe. Trying to fix a corrupted world using a wrong way will only distort it more. Lelouch is the ultimate successor of Charles vi Britannia lol.

Would you care if they died? Shirley death is a big deal for a lot of people if not for all who likes the show. It was sad, but this is a good thing to have, it points out that anyone can die. Who knows, knowing Sunrise they can do something stupid and bring her back, or worse. Either way, it was a mean but nice way to end a eps. Lets hope they can do something out of this that will keep the Shirley fan to watch. I am higly sure she will pop up agian through flashbacks to save or do something.

You are right, I wouldn't care.
Looking back there were many reasons for her to get killed off:
- she had her geass cancelled, and even if she was ok with Lulu being Zero, it would have been hard to imagine her as an other Kallen in the Black Knights
- got to date Lulu, basicly finishing her storyline
- she didn't have an important role to play in the rebellion
She wasn't my fave girl in the series but I'll still miss her. Hope they don't bring her back as a zombie as they did with Orange-kun though.
As for who's next....hard to guess Anya or Gino maybe. And Roro sooner or later.

I was in a little bit of a shock when i realized Shirley might die. I'm not really a Shirley fan and would rather see Lulu and Kallen hook up or maybe even C.C. but I rather have her die, she was a fun character. Although this is the one thing I like about anime over American cartoons, you never know if the main character(s) will die or suffer unrecoverable trauma, not that I'm saying thats a good thing but it keeps me in suspense and guessing as to whats gonna happen next. A lot of American cartoons don't seem to have this real world view and everything turn into, 'good guy gets the girl and rides into the sunset'. Anyone else feel this way?

am I the only one that really doesn't care at all that Shirley died? She was useless and all she did was having emotional flip outs. Sure, her love speech at the end was touching, but still. Even if she lived, she would have continued to be the useless and cliched damsel in distress. Also, ROLO IS NOT EMO. People forget that Rolo doesn't comprehend human emotions and common sense. He finally found love in a person (that person people lelouch) and once he learned of something that would take that love from him (Nunally and Shirley), his first thought was natural: get rid of whatever would keep him from being happy. It's just like if you were in a contest and you were running unopposed, but then suddenly someone started running too. You would do whateevr you could to assure your triumph over the other person (I'm sure you wouldn't gut them, but you get my drift). **TL;DR: Shirley's useless and Rolo's impulsive.**

Actually... now that I thought about it... Shirley broke (or should I say "followed"?) one of the oldest rules in the serious/real mecha genre... I'm sure most of you who watches Gundam and the likes will know what I'm talking about...
1. She's a side character and the series began to focus on her all of a sudden.
2. She had character development/progress with the main character.
3. Her love interest is the main character.

I thought it was very well done, the scenes of Shirley's death were powerful and I am pleased they're making such daring choices. Sure if you liked Shirley's character it must be sad and hurt but that is what makes it a good series, lives and character's futures really being on the line, bad ednings being possible.
After all, watching a show where you know the 'heroes' will win and no one will die can become quite boring, where's the challenge there?
I'm greatly enjoying "Code Geass R2", and while I will admit the series is hyped, commercialized and marketed, to me it still is a very solid anime with not only action, mecha, humor (not affraid to mock itself too) but some very interesting characters with a lot of depth and daring plot choices.
I hope they'll keep that level up and if characters have good, solid deaths with meaning, then I'm all for it. After all Shirley's character became mor eimportant and meaningful because of her death, now that lelouch was changing slowly in his views on how he treats others even with his core mission of being Zero and changing the world, the impact on him hurts even more.

i don't even think anymore when i watch code geass. i just let all the OMGWTFBBQRIBS and OH GEASS NO! moments happen and take it in realllllllllll slow..
I thought Rolo was an okay kid since he decided to take lulu's side, and that maybe I could forgive his fake brother complex. But then this happens, and I'm like NO YOU DID NOT JUST DO THAT. What a sad ending for her. I still don't get her reasoning that saying lulu was all alone fighting by himself.

The plotline for R2 defies common sense as the story progresses. How on earth can Lulu practically commands legions of Chinese federation troops while physically in Japan? How come Roro, Venlita (sp?) and Orange join Lulu's banner without qualm?

Aeris died and wasn't revived. And so is L in Death Note. Probably same goes with Shirley...
Although, maybe there would be a new character that would be introduced (could be in season 3, who knows) that is similar to Shirley. Kinda like Near replacing L.
As to what Shirley said before she died, I'm not sure what the exact words are but, it's kinda like no matter how many times her memory gets erased or if she lived a new life (reborn) she would still love Lulu.
Maybe the new character that would be introduced is very similar to Shirley (or maybe even has her soul) and would fall in love with Lulu.
Or if not, maybe in the end (far away future) Lulu and whoever's daughter would have Shriley's soul (as a daughter loving a dad of course. point is, she still loves him) or something... (I don't like this idea personally but... still could happen).
Then again, she might not be revived/reborn totally and maybe her spirit would just live on, helping Lulu. And Lulu would realize that Shirley never really died (not literally, kinda like a memory) and is still by his side. Loving him.
There are lots of possibilities and theories that can be made. At least for now...
But the best way to keep Shirley alive is through fanfics.
All I can say is keep watching. We'd never really know what'll happen if we stop.

I am SO glad I didn't remember this post when I finally got round to watching Code Geass.... So glad... but I still can't believe they did that...
Although it doesn't bother me as much as it used to, Shirley's death was and still is for me one of the saddest parts of the second season.
