Akiraman reports on a maid cafe in LA. The owner says...

Our maids don't call customers 'master' and the girls are sweet rather than flirty.
We want customers to come in and feel like they're in Alice in Wonderland and not Hooters.

The owner of this cafe said that she has never been to a maid cafe in Japan.

and yet in an ironic twist that's exactly what this "maid cafe" was using kawaii japanese girls for at Anime Expo, lol.

doesn't seem to maintain the same atmosphere as the real meidocafe, so it's probably bad or worse.

I actually live in the area and had heard about it a few months ago. Apparently it's well more about the art than the food or the maids. In fact, I'd heard the cafe part only just opened recently (a few months after the gallery opening), and the food is in very small portion and not that tasty (though I haven't tried myself). It's just unfortunate that the people most likely to visit (otaku) in realizing it's nothing like the actual maid cafes of Japan won't give it a second look, once they find out. Fail indeed.

For me it's not a maid cafe but a normal cofe with the waitresses dressed as maids. The special service is what it's all about. And the waitresses are less cute, althought the one on the left is nice. The other one with the tatoo is rather scary.

So that place is a high class refined place, with a refined art galery. Then what is a tattoed maid doing there? :P
Also, didn't really like how the Japanese maid cafes are described here. Not that I've ever been in one actually, but I think that this is a bit exaggerated right? ^_^; It's not that I'm saying that the Japanese maid cafes are all 100% pure and innocent (we all know that the idea is not 100% pure right ^_^; ), but I guess that the main idea of the maid cafes is to create a cozy, warm and happy environment for people who goes there (specially lonely otaku lol), and not exactly for those "other purposes", and I don't really think it's a bad thing (it's actually a cute thing ^.^ ).

Alice in Wonderland? Alice in Wonderland style cafe would be nothing like this! Alice in Wonderland exists because Carol fell in love with a little girl and told the story to entertain her.

This fake maid cafe is not close enough to a fantasy to even be called a maid cafe. DO NO WANT.

Ahaha, I picked up my copy of My Paper just a few days ago and I saw this article too. Pretty interesting that in all places and article like this would pop up, it had to be my favourite freesheet. You even get to learn a bit of Chinese from it too; it's a biingual paper.

Yeah the Asian one on the right is a little too, um, granny-tranny-tastic if you ask me. And, "Our maids don't call customers 'master' and the girls are sweet rather than flirty,"? Puh-lease. That's just one reason why a maid-kissa would never work state-side. I personally never understood the appeal of maid cafes in Japan, actually. And that's all the more expounding I'll do on this matter.

Appearntly HAVE NOT BEEN TO A REAL MAID CAFE. Come to think of it in Japan it may seem Flirty but that IS WHERE THE CUTENESS COMES FROM. and DOnt Forget there are Butler Cafes too where GUYS Treat Women too. The way they treat the Customers here is almost simliar to Butler Cafes only the Butler Cafes actually they do the same things Meaid Cafes do only Manlier and More Clothe. OuO Overall Japanese Cafes Maid Cafes AND Butler Cafes Treat Their Customers in similar Fashion to each other but NOT THIS CAFE. *SIGH*Where is the CUTENESS!? LOVE!? SPECIAL TREAMENT!? FUN!? Just TEA!? NO FUN!? NO ROCK PAPER SCISSORS!? Its like taking Peanut Butter and calling it JELLY JAM. This CAFE TOOK OUT ALL THE FUN OF THE REAL CAFE AND MADE IT LESS FUN *SIGH* But have not been to one so this is just Opinion. But can tell NOT FUN BY ARTICLE. *SIGH* Basically they only took the LOOKS, STYLE, COSTUMES, and SERVICE. Everything else which is basically FUN AND HAPPINESS IS OUT OF THE PICTURE *SIGH* But Will admit have not been to one but can tell NOT LIKE JAPANESE CAFES. AT LEAST WE CAN TELL FROM VIDEOS THE JAPANESE GIRLS ENJOY and HAVE FUN WITH IT. *SIGH* This Cafe just made it look Down Score. IDK No choice but to FLY THERE AND SEE FOR MYSELF WHEN HAVE A CHANCE. *SIGH* but still INTERESTING.
