NicoNico Douga

NicoNico Douga announced that it made an agreement with the likes of the Japan Animation Association to delete videos which infringe copyright so its sayonara to MAD and a ton of other fan made videos.

Kadokawa did recently say that they wont be taking action against fan made videos that were uploaded to YouTube as it looks like they made an agreement with YouTube to monetize from fan made videos. Wondering why a similar agreement wasn't made with NicoNico.

Will be interesting to see how a site that is originally popular with fan made videos survives without them. Any NicoNico users here?

I think the difference between NicoNico and Youtube is Google's huge, battle-tested legal department. Therefore an agreement is the cheapest way to settle things with them.

More like "bullied" rather than an "agreement".

This is indeed a sad news especially for some of us frequent NicoNico visitors who finds the said video service much more superior than Youtube due to its content.

Content associations is slowly killing NicoNico.

Sad to see this happening... Anime is the heart of niconico. They have a very unique community which I don't want seeing breaking up because of this.
I do use NicoNico Douga occasionally, but since buffering takes a very long time, I won't use it if its already uploaded on youtube.

    Wow... RIP NicoNico Douga.
    Dumb move.
I mean, really... can't understand why those so called "Associations"... which is probably like MPAA and RIAA are so blind to see that fanmade videos are probably the animes and mangas biggest advertisers.

But you know, I'm tired of getting angry over sh*t like this. I hope MPAA and RIAA eventually wins and get what they want so that the movie and music industry gets f*cked up and finally realise how much they were actually winning by letting people use their content to do fanbased stuff, or even from pirating.

Anime and Manga would be NOTHING here in Brazil, and probably on USA too, if it wasn't for pirating and fansubbing.
Same goes to gaming industry. What would Sony be today if it wasn't for PS and PS2 pirated games?

How ungrateful big corporations can be? Like this last weekend I watched a play... was kinda expensive, but I decided to watch after seeing a part of it on YouTube. And I'm willing to bet, at least 50% of the people watching were also there only because of the same YouTube clip...

Things will become very clear in the future, and we'll eventually have a laugh on stuff like Japan Animation Association, MPAA and RIAA. And here it is: Very soon, the only stuff most people will watch (or think is worth watching) is the stuff people talk about, make YouTube fan videos, and publish on video sharing websites.

Anyways, this is all a part of a bigger discussion on when music, movies and other types of art stopped being "art" per se, and turned into products with "artists" caring more about how much they'll profit from it than on how many people likes their art.

One of the things that are currently wrong with the culture and way of thinking, IMHO.

There is something wrong with your way of thinking if you think companies should not care about people stealing their stuff. If you support anime so much, did you buy the code-2 dvds or any licensed region dvd after watching the fansubs? You and I know the answer to that one.

As soon the anime/manga companies formed these sort of media "associations" (ie: cartels), I knew eventually they would start acting like the hostile short-sighted control freaks of the MPAA/RIAA that plague the USA. User-created MAD and parody videos are essentially free advertisements (I've personally spent good money buying titles that I only found out about through MADs and parodies) that increase both marketshare and mindshare, and to waste time and money quashing those videos just because they technically infringe copyright is self-defeating and unprofitable.

The anime/manga industry grew and thrived because companies understood their fanbase enough to realize that sometimes copyright infringement isn't a bad thing, and that certain forms of it can actually generate profit. But now that the industry has grown large, rich, and visible, there are now more and more out-of-touch businessmen involved who don't understand the fanbase nor want to, and thus can only act in the most short-sighted, hostile, letter-of-contract manner. The sort of idiots would sue us because many of our message board avatars technically infringe copyright. Just because you can pressure and sue someone doesn't mean that you should.
