Why Japan Sucks

So you already know that the lack of non-smoking areas in restaurants over here gets on my nut but there is another thing - we always get the films last.
Its usually due to when the Japanese have money to spend/holiday seasons and not because of time needed for dubbing/translations/preparing of marketing material.
We still don't have Iron Man (September 2008) and there is no sign of Wall E at all. Is it the same in you region or do you get your movies pretty much the same time as the US?
I hear many good tings about Wall E. Anybody seen this yet? What is your fave Pixar movie so far? I think I choose the Incredibles.

Ironman has been out for a couple of weeks now I can't wait for Wall- E though it looks so cute and awesome!!
My fav pixar movie would be finding nemo

I agree, Finding Nemo is great. Lots of funny adult humour in there.
I think it's anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months behind the U.S. for movie releases. Very occasionally we get it first (by a few hours) or a simultaneous release. I saw the 3D cardboard Wall-E display at the cinema when I took my 3yr old to see Speed Racer. He wanted to take it home to play with, but it wouldn't fit under my shirt 8-)

If I recall correctly, Poland gets the movie in some order AFTER Japan, so I guess I won't see this sooner than you Danny ^^ Besides I don't go to cinemas, lately there's too much crap in the film industry here >.<

Oh come on, you are overreacting, we got Ironman BEFORE Americans as for Wall-e it will be shown in cinemas only 3 weeks after US premiere, probably due to a dubbing, its an animated movie after all.

in sinagpore we usually get to see blockbusters before the US. well that's because of differences in time zone. we are 1 day ahead of the US.
additionally, some countries in Asia get to see the movies first in a attempt to fight piracy. if the release dates are too far back, people will start buying pirated DVDs.
oh just to add, pirated DVDs are very much under control in singapore. we usually get our movies form axxo, FxG and FxM. ^^;

well in malaysia, our cinema usually get the movies early - between 0 days to 1 week++ after premier.
however, at some of the "dvd-sellers" they somehow sometimes get movies even before the premier..
the thing that sucks here, is the dumb censorship board - they sometimes cut off kissing scenes, too much blood is also a no-no, 4 letters words are also no-no, and many more

Oh, why Brazil sucks: So far, I only saw dubbed versions being shown on theaters.
F*cking hate that. Lots of Pixar movies are only released dubbed version because they think the movies are for children only, and they won't mind having only dubbed versions.

Canada's problem is that we're so tightly knit with the USA in culture and trade that it's hard to distinquish ourselves (and yes, we get movies the same time as the US release, and we share DVD "region"). It's gotten such that the government has a policy of helping support Canadian media content by offering financial support to Canadian film-makers ...the horrible side effect being that a lot of a crappy Canadian film gets made regardless of the quality of the project. :p

There's some truth to that, but at the same time, there's a lot of good Canadian films that would never see the light of day without it. As a film student, I'm rather grateful.

Well it can't be all that bad, this is the first time I've heard of Wall E!! Australia has movie releases like a half a year later than the US. Most of my friends download them, unlike me, I like the movie experience, big screen, surround sound yay. It's funny when you talk about a new movie release in Australia to a person living in America and they've already forgotten about that movie. Movie releases are coming faster and faster anyway, so its only a matter of time Japan gets them quicker.

Anyway Australia probably is about a month or 2 behind the US... and maybe a year behind Japan.

Singapore gets most movies 'on time' but most of them are Hollywood ones. Prefer a wide selection of movies: indies, documentaries, anime :) ... The situation is improving now, I think.
Btw, I vote for 'Finding Nemo' as the best Pixar film just ahead of 'Toy Story' because of its very smart script, gut-wrenching funny and touching at the same time plus a great cast. Perhaps Wall-E could become the best one?
Danny, you should count yourself luckier than those in China, who usually have to wait ages, and might not even see the movie due to the censors there. Besides, you get all the latest anime first hand, guess that cancels out the frustration, huh? :D
I think for movies in the summer blockbuster season, it's usually Asia-Pacific (bar Japan and China) first, followed by Europe and then rest of world, as Asia draws in more money which will look good on the "overseas box office" column of their statistics.
For Oscar-season movies, it's Europe first and then other places, as they will want as many movie critics (who are mostly based in North America and Europe) to see those movies as possible to increase their chances of winning more trophies.

Once again, I can't believe Iron Man is not coming out in Japan until September. It's an international smash hit right now, not sure what marketting people are thinking. They should of at least released by the time of summer vacation, September seems odd time to release it.

In Italy it used to be that we would get the movies 6 months to 1 year later - this till the mid '90s I think. At that time, one actor basically dubbed all the movies (his name was Ferruccio Amendola) - that might have been one of the reasons.
Italy has recently gotten to sim-launch, or at the most "1 month delay" launch; it's generally better business for the Studios who can use their staggering mktg budgets in 1 worldwide push.
Do they dub movies in your region, or do you see Hollywood ones in english with subtitles?

Here in the Philippines, we get American movies usually the same time it's released in the U.S. (sometimes 1 to 2 days earlier ^_^) Too bad though, Wall-E is going to be shown on August 9 here. :( My sister is excited to watch Wall-E but was disappointed to find out the release date. we get wall-e in october 2008, usually the same time as germany
you think Japan sucks?
ok here I proudly present: the top three reasons why Austria sucks!
1.)there are only a few boring tv channels, most of them from germany
by the way, there is hardly shown anime (0,0000000000000000025% maybe...), and if then years after the release in Japan,
I'm not really concerned because subgroups are fast nowadays^^
2.) internet: japan has a average broadband speed of 60Mbit...
take a look @ the chart http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/5690/broadbandspeedchartgd3.jpg
we have 6Mbit average broadbandspeed!!! my 8Mbit line costs ~4200 Yen/month
3.) figures and other merchandise have to travel 9500km before the reach us here!!
in general, I would say: Austria is not the best place to live for otakus^^

I live in the US, so no problems here for getting US movies on time. But for us anime and JRPG videogame fans, it's terrible. It takes forever before we get to see anime over here. We're still waiting for The Girl Who Leapt Through Time here! And it takes eons for SquareEnix to translate their games for us too (still no Final Fantasy 4 DS).
UOIT student
jrpg is so underrated over here it's sad :( also, EA, Blizzard, and Halo always steals the shelfspace.. (ubisoft has their share as well but they aren't bad or overrepetitive.. actually i think they've gone lower than they used to but still, they aren't the big ones. maybe Blizzard shouldn't be a blame either but aside from the first star craft, i haven't really paid attention to their games) for a soccer game i prefer winning eleven by konami over EA... but you never see ppl buying the few that ever get on the shelves because either they aren't there, they are hiding behind other games, or people just never pay attention to it..
also for anime, as much fanbase as there is now, it's still seen mainly as "anime = kids show (unless it is hentai)" by most people (at least I believe that's the current case over here) even when there's all sorts of anime. where i live, i think the only anime movies that come to theatres here are the ones from mainstream shows aired from tv. only ones i can think of are pokemon, yugioh and maybe naruto. they've thown good anime on tv before but i have never realized they've shown them. one such was witch hunter robin. it was shown maybe 4-5 years ago i think, and i was only able to watch a few shows and i dont' think they ever showed it again. there's also fma, i think also Lain, but i haven't seen them. i do know though that they prefer showing dubs.. i hear there was a show or two that they showed subbed but not many.. another horrible thing is their seeming love for reruns. it took maybe 10-11 years to get through dbz because every now and then they'd return to the beginning of dbz and then run it to maybe 1-5 episodes past their drop-point and rerun it again. repeating the process until they finally reach the end. and also, sometimes they'd decide to rerun it without adding the few episodes.
haven't seen Wall-e yet but i've played the first few chapters of the ps2 game and i'm loving every bit of it ^_^ it feels as if i'm watching the movie.

usually for Blockbuster we get it at the same time than in US, and Ironman wasn't a worlwide released? (sometime before: Indiana Jones 4 release 1 day before US because of the avant-première at the festival of Cannes) If it's not a worldwide release then we usually wait for a month or two max, but I guess it's because we are with UK the largest market in Europe.

Wall E will be out in Indonesia probably next week. Our cinemas usually get the same release week for Hollywood movies as in US, for most movies we can watch them earlier than people in US since theaters usually play new movies on Wednesday (not Friday like in US). But those rules only apply for big budget action/animated movies like Harry Potter, Marvel/DC super heroes, animated movies, etc. For drama/romcom/indie movies usually they play 6 months after US release.

I'm thinking if I ever go to Japan, I will need a gas mask... smoke gives me instant headache and makes me nauseous. People are not allowed to smoke inside of public places here, but they still have the smell... ugh...
In Montreal we usually get the movies on the US release dates, even with the French dubs... I never go see them in theatre because it's too noisy and there's always an idiot to kick you in the back through the whole movie...

I don't understand why Japan gets the movies at a later date. Japan Ebay may also have the 2 movies but I don't know for sure.
