Japanese Face Recognition

In the Smoking ban in Japan article, I talked about how Japan is introducing the Taspo card which will be needed to purchase cigarettes from a vending machine to prevent youngsters buying their fix. In that article, I also talk about the reasons why Taspo is not popular.
It seemed for a moment that Japanese face recognition technology was going to save the day.
Fuji Taka has a system built into their vending machines which recognizes the face of adults. A person needs to have their face scanned by the machine and be recognized as an adult before it will sell anything.
A report by Iza talks of how these machines have a major flaw - they can be fooled by showing it a face of an adult that's printed in a magazine ^^;;;
Are there devices in vending machines (or other measures) that prevent children from buying cigarettes in your region?

Here in the USA it is simply a check of your ID for an age verification. Alcohol and tobacco products are not sold in vending machines and instead must be bought through a real person. That does not seem to stop some people though XD
Your local Otaku Cashier.
Yeah, people attempt regardless. Had this guy come in through my line once trying to buy a 24 pack of beer. He handed me his ID and said "The year's 1986". I looked at his ID, and it said 89, same age as me. At the time I was already pissed off because of other customers and immediately said "Sir, I can't because you are 18. Just get out."

Same here in Canada, we just check the ID. And we don't have vending machines for alcohol and tobacco or ero magazine at all.

i could think of a couple of ways they can fix this. add in a body heat scanner and motion sensor. I don't think kids are desperate enough for cigs to actually try and circumvent 3 verification modes.

as a side note, when i was a teen in the Philippines, the cigarette vendors didn't give a rats ass what age you were, as long as you bought some. hooray for degraded morals.

I fail to see how a heat scanner and a motion sensor can help at all. All you have to do is print out a paper mask and heat it up.
Spend years and millions of dollars on research and gets beaten by a piece of paper...

that is why we calibrate it for only certain temperature ranges, i doubt anyone has a body temperature similar to a flaming piece of paper.

so surely they would just need to stand behind the paper and their heat would come through :S

LOL, ok you got me stumped on that one, but is sure as hell would be funny (and maybe disturbing) seeing a kid with a magazine cutout propped on front on their face.

lol I can see a kid tipping toes to put a magazine on the face recognizing portion and get the ciggies ^^;;

I had the sameidea with the magazine while reading the first paragraph. We don't have too many vending machines for cigarettes. We mainly have machines for soda. In stores they check your ID, but in small corner shops they don't even do that or kids say their dad sent them.

Only safe way would be to have a database with fingerprints and fingerprint scanner... or maybe every adult receives a card which proves he/she is an adult.
Both methods can still be faked but they are more secure. Only problem is that it would cost a whole lot more to do it.
But I think it's the future. Having only one card for everything, or even using firgerprint and other biometrics methods for everything... from paying, to opening your door house and other stuff.

Here kids find a dealer or get an older person to buy it or get a fake id. In my region drugs are a huge problem. Some people I know started hard drugs, not even cigarettes but hard drugs in middle school.

For those people who said just check their ID: They don't even have people in a freaking police station.
Im not native english, but isnt "fix" a little harsh word? Espacially for people like me who enjoy a cigarette instead of smoking every second.
@topic: all that is necessary to prevent kids and teenager to get their hands on cigarettes. If you are not an adult you dont know where you getting yourself in. I started smoking 3 years ago with 19.
By the way, I met my first girlfriend at that time through smoking (at a birth day party of a good friend we had to go out to smoke and thats where i met here :)).

fix doesn't sound harsh to me, technically a cigarette is a drug, a legal one too.
Nice to hear you had some good memories associated with smoking. I was in a similar situation too
so do you get your fix of you drink a fresh beer in a hot summer day?
-1
http://necrophadian.blogspot.com/
no, you get a "buzz".
if we assign words now as they meant to be "fix" is for drugs entered through a syringe as far as i know.
But this is going in the wrong direction. I only wanted to make it clear that there are people like me who enjoy thier time with a cigarette while talking with friends i dont consider this getting my daily fix and i have to say i rather do think this word is a little wrong placed :/. As much as People drink a class beer or whine.
Again, i know there are people smoking 30 cigarettes a day and yeah for them its more a drug then some kind of lifestyle like it is for me. But too much of anything is always bad. I only think its funny because of some weakminded people who cant controll themselves and their desires people who dont smoke generalize every smoker as chaining smoker. Much like when people consider me a killer because i like to play fps or people consider me a pervert because i like watching anime. I didnt thought i would find peole like this here...

Selling tobacco or alchohol in the US just wouldn't fly for the very same reason. However, even though these products are kept 'behind the shelf' I know too many underage drinkers. But maybe it works better?

the only problem i see with face recognition is, what if there is a person how looks exactly the same as another person, i know it's happened to me once
the only type of security item over here that i know of is ID cards

I am sensing flaws... I do not know exactly what they are but there will be flaws O_o
Here in the Philippines, anyone can buy cigarettes! Seriously, I saw a family of three (mom, dad and elementary grade son) smoking some weeks ago. Same goes with alcoholic beverages. I tell you, the only way to minimize (if not eliminate it completely) the occurrence of minors buying cigarettes is that they raise the tax of cigarettes by 300%-500%! XD

what about adults who look like kids? I mean asian girls never look their age! :O

http://necrophadian.blogspot.com/
yes as with henry's post upstairs i was wondering about that. how exactly does the software determine what an adult looks like? a lot of asian females don't look like their biological ages. clearly they still have a long way to go on this one
When I read the article about this, I already figured that the machine could be fooled by a print-out of a face. I can't see them putting the latest in face-recognition technology in a vending machine that just spits out cigs.

too bad for babyfaced folks I guess. ^^ regarding devices that prevents children from buying cigarettes, since labor is cheaper here, the only countermeasure preventing kids to buy cigarettes is the vendor. however even that doesn't work all the time. I still sometimes see some kids smoke around more depressed areas.

shops here are not allowed to sell cigarettes to anyone under 18 years old.
btw cigarettes prices here are a killer. cost above US7.00 for a pack.

Couldn't they just have add one of those face scanners using lights, built-in with the camera so it detects that the face is 3D and not 2D.
Heat sensors aren't that great, thermal detectors don't work well during summer. A lot of interference especially in the city, heat from other people, cars etc.
There are no vending machines here which sell cigarettes, they are sold in shops as long as you have ID. But since I don't smoke i don't know if all shops asks for ID or not. Esp. smaller shops which are happy to earn a little bit extra by selling illegally.

The vending machines in here have a security lock that the owner has, you need to ask him to unlock the machine in order to buy cigarettes, if he thinks that you aren't 18 years old he can ask you for id. I have seen many people go away turned down by the owner, if the owner messes up, he will pay a lot of money from breaking the rule. Same goes for alcohol, but you can drink if you are over 16, the police usually raids the pubs in here, there is always kids going to the police office(also know as the temporary jail till your parents arrive).

They don't have any measures here to prevent children from buying them. But they have implemented a law that bans smoking in public places entirely. I like it but I still see people smoking in these places from time to time. They don't have enough people to keep an eye on everyone.

this is silly, a smart kid will just bring a photo of and adult and put it in the machine, the machine cant recognize 3d

No automated vending of cigs over here at semi-autocratic isle. But it doesn't mean kids can't get their grubby hands on it-- But in the spirit of truthfulness it might be the best to stop sale of cigs and alcohol in automated vendors even if it meant pple (like me) have to walk a bit further to a コンビニ
???Confused???
The only vending machines I've ever seen around here are ones that sell snacks and drinks (non-alcoholic)...you want cigs and booze you go buy it from a liquor store...or rob one (warning clerks are armed with shotguns and pistols...)

They should have an "insert ID here"... but woe betide the unlucky sod who gets it when the machine breaks down and refuses to spit out both his card and cigs.

well here in the usa stuff like that simply is not in vending machines. so i guess its not an issue. where the issue lies here is with the people who sell it.

I guess that's a good idea... except the fact that you can fool it with a photo or a magazine. That'll need some typing.

We are pretty lax about that.
In fact I know a lot of people who haven't even reached 18 and they can buy cigarettes without having to show their license.
It's kinda sad..
