Japanese Face Recognition

In the Smoking ban in Japan article, I talked about how Japan is introducing the Taspo card which will be needed to purchase cigarettes from a vending machine to prevent youngsters buying their fix. In that article, I also talk about the reasons why Taspo is not popular.
It seemed for a moment that Japanese face recognition technology was going to save the day.
Fuji Taka has a system built into their vending machines which recognizes the face of adults. A person needs to have their face scanned by the machine and be recognized as an adult before it will sell anything.

A report by Iza talks of how these machines have a major flaw - they can be fooled by showing it a face of an adult that's printed in a magazine ^^;;;

Are there devices in vending machines (or other measures) that prevent children from buying cigarettes in your region?

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

Here in the USA it is simply a check of your ID for an age verification. Alcohol and tobacco products are not sold in vending machines and instead must be bought through a real person. That does not seem to stop some people though XD

Yeah, people attempt regardless. Had this guy come in through my line once trying to buy a 24 pack of beer. He handed me his ID and said "The year's 1986". I looked at his ID, and it said 89, same age as me. At the time I was already pissed off because of other customers and immediately said "Sir, I can't because you are 18. Just get out."

i could think of a couple of ways they can fix this. add in a body heat scanner and motion sensor. I don't think kids are desperate enough for cigs to actually try and circumvent 3 verification modes.

I fail to see how a heat scanner and a motion sensor can help at all. All you have to do is print out a paper mask and heat it up.

Spend years and millions of dollars on research and gets beaten by a piece of paper...

Only safe way would be to have a database with fingerprints and fingerprint scanner... or maybe every adult receives a card which proves he/she is an adult.

Both methods can still be faked but they are more secure. Only problem is that it would cost a whole lot more to do it.

But I think it's the future. Having only one card for everything, or even using firgerprint and other biometrics methods for everything... from paying, to opening your door house and other stuff.

Im not native english, but isnt "fix" a little harsh word? Espacially for people like me who enjoy a cigarette instead of smoking every second.
@topic: all that is necessary to prevent kids and teenager to get their hands on cigarettes. If you are not an adult you dont know where you getting yourself in. I started smoking 3 years ago with 19.
By the way, I met my first girlfriend at that time through smoking (at a birth day party of a good friend we had to go out to smoke and thats where i met here :)).

if we assign words now as they meant to be "fix" is for drugs entered through a syringe as far as i know.

But this is going in the wrong direction. I only wanted to make it clear that there are people like me who enjoy thier time with a cigarette while talking with friends i dont consider this getting my daily fix and i have to say i rather do think this word is a little wrong placed :/. As much as People drink a class beer or whine.
Again, i know there are people smoking 30 cigarettes a day and yeah for them its more a drug then some kind of lifestyle like it is for me. But too much of anything is always bad. I only think its funny because of some weakminded people who cant controll themselves and their desires people who dont smoke generalize every smoker as chaining smoker. Much like when people consider me a killer because i like to play fps or people consider me a pervert because i like watching anime. I didnt thought i would find peole like this here...

Here in the Philippines, anyone can buy cigarettes! Seriously, I saw a family of three (mom, dad and elementary grade son) smoking some weeks ago. Same goes with alcoholic beverages. I tell you, the only way to minimize (if not eliminate it completely) the occurrence of minors buying cigarettes is that they raise the tax of cigarettes by 300%-500%! XD

Couldn't they just have add one of those face scanners using lights, built-in with the camera so it detects that the face is 3D and not 2D.
Heat sensors aren't that great, thermal detectors don't work well during summer. A lot of interference especially in the city, heat from other people, cars etc.

There are no vending machines here which sell cigarettes, they are sold in shops as long as you have ID. But since I don't smoke i don't know if all shops asks for ID or not. Esp. smaller shops which are happy to earn a little bit extra by selling illegally.

The vending machines in here have a security lock that the owner has, you need to ask him to unlock the machine in order to buy cigarettes, if he thinks that you aren't 18 years old he can ask you for id. I have seen many people go away turned down by the owner, if the owner messes up, he will pay a lot of money from breaking the rule. Same goes for alcohol, but you can drink if you are over 16, the police usually raids the pubs in here, there is always kids going to the police office(also know as the temporary jail till your parents arrive).
