Tokyo Toy Show 2008

The Tokyo Toy Show 2008 took place over the weekend and you can see a load of pics of the event at Mainichi.
Gunota has picked out the Gundam specific stuff and posted it on his burogu.
The next show I will be attending is the Wonfes this August. I hear there are a load of Anime events in the US during the summer. Any of you attending events during the hot season?
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

Last column, fourth row: I see a Space Marine. They sell Warhammer40K stuff there now or have I missed something?

I think Games-Workshop's been seling to Japan for a while now, but only a very small fanbase exists there. Personally, I'm more curious as to whether there is Warmachine and Hordes fanbase there.

Before GW ceased operation in SE asia, there use to be a GW.jp domain. I don't get the impression that it's caught on much, but I've seen evidence of some GW supplies being recommended by a few military modeller types in Hobby Japan... For what it's worth though, there is a bit of a following for PP in HK, but then most of those guys are from other countries.

Yeah. Heck, the GW boxes have Japanese written on them. Guess Minis-games aren't too popular in Japan.

Anime Expo 08 in July...maybe...

Went to AE 06 with a couple of friends and my sister... Me and my sister were more intent on watching newer shows and broadening our base(not to say we didn't like some older shows to death, but we liked to watch a lot of different shows), and were rather dissapointed at the limited scope of covereage there... It was great fun seeing the crazy cosplayers and their strange antics, but it wasn't as neato as I thought it would've been... Best part of the visit was seeing ZZ perform live and then stunning them when I started speaking to them in decent but somewhat broken Japanese... I don't think they expected it... lol

Ya the range of shows they have is pretty limited. It's pretty much whatever they have on DVD plus there is only so many rooms they can use on the university campus.
Ya ZZ was awesome at least they spoke some English. The following year Back-On came 1 guy spoke broken english and the rest need translators.
Ya a lot of the cosplayers scare me TT_TT. I mean I cosplay but I don't run up people to them and tackle them. I've been kissed on the cheek, and tackled by people. Some of them I'm sad to say are my friends =_=.
I don't mostly go to AE to watch anime because I have too much on my must watch this NOW list. I mostly go for the dealers room, some of the panels, the artists alley, and the creative station.

Anime events here in the US suck in my opinion.
It's not the mechandise they have there, all that's great.
It's just the people I can't stand.
Maybe I'm just too anti-cosplay...unless under some other circumstances. Like when Danny is a Stormtrooper. Or if the cosplay is extremely stunning.

I don't mind the cosplayers since it's hard and expensive to many gorgeous cosplayers...Though some cosplays so scare me ^^; like male sailor moon. I just can't stand the loud screaming people (mostly "fan" girls) and the douche bags who are all "OMG so and so's costume sucks" or "I'm so much more leet than you because I watch every episode of every show with gundams".That's why I ignore them, hang out with friends and spend most time in panels or the dealers room rather leave those areas and have to deal with listening to them =_=;;

i went to my first anime con recently (fanime)... but the people weren't quite what i expected. Maybe it was just the people i went with, but it seemed like no one had any clue about recent anime (ef, shakugan no shana, rosario + vampire, spice and wolf, minamike, shigofumi, h2o, lucky star, kimiaru, kamen no maid guy, toloveru... not a single one. heh well, maybe it's just my taste that's off the norm ^^;) Also was a lot less haruhi fandom than i expected... but man, bleach and naruto as far as the eye could see ^^; Anyhow, I enjoy seeing cosplayers showing their enthusiasm, and haven't come across any obnoxious ones in my (extremely limited) experience.

I went to an Anime expo in the UK and it was the same, just waves of Naruto/Bleach cosplayers everywhere thinking they were soooo original. Merchandise was too expensive as well, but got to meet Cam Clarke (original English voice of Kaneda from Akira) and a few sci-fi people like Bruce Boxleitner (big B5 fan), Michael York, the guy who did Golem and some StarTrek/Stargate actors.

It seems to be an unfortunate trend in North America, that anime/manga fandom in the mainstream really degrades back down into following the current "mainstream" presented in the media. As much, it seems unless they've the initiative to dig it out, most of it would be limited to shounen stuff...
That's not to say there isn't a large basis of fans who're big on watching new shows and what not, but I get the impression that we're not exactly the type who enjoy the NA Con enviornment... Most likely precisely due to there being too many of the mainstreamers doing their crazy cosplay(it's rather interesting IMO). Now if those very cosplayers were more open in their opinions and friendlier towards those of a differing prefence to their media, then maybe there'd be more room for us. As in stands though, most of them seem mostly content on hanging with their little cliche groups...

Will go to Animation-Comic-Game Hong Kong (ACGHK or 香港動漫電玩) in early August, but I was told that it's going down a spiral over the years.
Only found one that drew my interests in those pictures: a BF109-4, but it's in 1/100 scale?! Why would you decide to have one different from other military scales all of a sudden? (1/100 is usually for gunplas but not military)

There isn't much happening here during summer, but I'm thinking of going to Japan Expo as well (or ask some French friends to get me some stuff). Oh! Great will be there too promoting Soul Calibur IV with Izubuchi.

The Singapore Toy & Comic Convention 2008, coming up this Saturday and Sunday. This year's the first, but I hope it would turn out as big as (but on a smaller scale) as Comiket or Otakon. It'll be held in conjunction with Cosfest 2008. I'm betting a lot of other Singaporeans here on dc.com are going too.I know for sure Joshua, Windbell and Gordon are going; we're going together. ^_^;;

Sounds good. I think I'll go down and have a look see as well.
Many years ago, there was some kind of anime/game fair at Takashimaya basement. The animation company who did Oh My Goddess (the very first series which came out in huge, ugly laser discs) was there and I bought a book from them (I can't remember their name). It shows the cell works and some of the anime screenshots. Though I was hoping for a 3x3 Eyes figure or something, I was quite pleased with the book.
I hope the Toy & Comic Convention will be good.

I'll be attending Otakuthon in Montreal, will be going as a Dealer though so probably wont get to see too much of it though. Like others have said, I sometimes wish there was not quite so much trend following in North America, Naruto and Bleach are ok but after seeing the 1000th person dressed as Naruto my eyes begin to twitch just a little bit. ;) That said the last Con I went to was Animaritime and there were many people cosplaying D.Gray Man characters.
