Hijacked from Meimi who discovers this incredible ripoff Kureha. Has anybody here ended up with any fakes in their collection? What measures do you take to make sure you dont end up with one. I have heard opinions that originals are too expensive and that fakes are just fine to have.

Original text from Meimi below.

I was just searching ebay, for games mostly, then I got onto figures later, and was reminded of how much I want figures from the shining wind series. And I came upon this... I admit its nowhere near as bad as Sader, but its still.... so obviously fake I'm suprised they get away with it.... theres not even any white on her hair band!!

Link to actual item on ebay

Funny thing is, the same person sells the legitimate version aswell.

Legit Kureha, for comparison to naff-Kureha

That's terrible. And they are both listed as Dragonball Z figures!!

I'm sure even if you order the "real" looking one you will get the fake. It's just a stock photo, and both descriptions are exactly the same...never once stating that it is official.

The real killer is that both prices are the same and less than 1/4 the price for a real one!

This is not a case of What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get. I see eBay figure sellers from Hong Kong, China or Thailand and the first word that comes to mind is: pirate.

There is no way an authentic Kureha resin kit will have a Buy-It-Now for £12.95. Pirates have no moral compunctions in passing their cheap recast garbage as the real one.

The only time I will tolerate a recast is when the original resin kit is all sold out or too expensive to get. If you don't mind an imperfect copy that requires alot of work, I suggest you try http://www.e2046.com/index.php instead.

I have only ever bought 2 things from China. Ragnarok mini figs and the Grimrock Rei and Asuka set, which both seem fine and dandy.

I dont even think if the figure I wanted was sold out that I would settle for a fake/recast. I would have to have the real thing.

This aint even a resin kit lol. Its a proper pre-painted job.

Not a resin kit? It says "MANGA SHINING WIND KUREHA ADULT RESIN FIGURE YELLOW NEW" right in the title of the auction.

They took a recast and painted it. They can paint it any color you like, so that's where you find the black and yellow Kureha selling at the same price.

If you think it'll be a "proper pre-painted job", I have only one word for you: Haha! If you do end up getting it, compare it against the Max Factory PVC Danny got.

Spot on. eBay sellers based in Hong Kong I would always avoid. You'd be pretty much cursed if you actually live there and want to sell legit figures.

I've found that when searching, including the manufacturer's name helps somewhat, to filter them out.

This is a lovely example of a cheap Chinese bootleg that unregistered anime sellers will push. It's so bad compared to the real one. Before you buy any figure, make sure the dealer is a genuine anime retailer and the items are not cheap bootlegs ~_~.

Being a collector of resin kits, I don't have any "fakes" as such but I do have a few recasts which are similar.

Basically a recast is when someone buys an original resin figure and then uses it to make a new mold to mass produce copies of the parts. Hence the name. They're really easy to spot, but only once you get to see the actual product (they usually come in a simple box or bag with a single sheet of instructions and a photo of the completed figure). Most official products come with a little extra such as a stamp from the maker and the like.

The quality is not usually as bad as fake PVC figures like this Kureha but recasts do tend to require more work than an official one. And some recasts are very poorly made, esp if they are from korea or Thailand.

The only real safe way to buy the "good" figures is to buy them directly from folks in Japan. Meaning that the figure is most likely real if the seller says he lives in Japan.

I personally only buy figures from Japanese sellers, I don't trust the US sellers either.

I agree with you to an extent. You don't need to go to Japanese sellers to be assured of a genuine figure.

If you shop with reputable online retailers like Hobby Link Japan (Japan), PlayAsia (Hong Kong) or KidNemo (US), the chance of getting a pirated product is almost nil.

For auction sellers (like those in Yahoo Japan Auctions), the old adage of "Buyers beware" still applies. The chance of getting a pirated figure is slim, but pirated figures do exist in Japan.

This is a link of an article in AkibaBlog showing their Japanese readers ways to spot a pirated Kasumi:

I don't think a real collector want to buy a bootlef figures. But sometimes a collector with limited budget might try to find a bargain figure for their collection, and eBay usually is the answer. I bought lots of things from eBay for years, 5 years ago I don't think there's bootleg figures, they haven't made them yet. But since the figures collecting itself become more popular the bootleggers then decided to make bootleg figures and sell them, especially sellers from China. One seller offer Evangelion Gothic Lolita Asuka $5.00 Buy It Now price, you just know it's a fake figure. I have lots of examples that I can make full length article about this topic (maybe I will make one someday). So buyers beware from some eBay sellers. The best way is to buy figures from reputable online sellers like HLJ or HobbySearch.

I already purchased many figures from HLJ, Play-Asia, Kidnemo, Hobby Search and eBay. I've found no problems when purchasing figures in eBay, I just see the price and the seller feedback, if the price is far below the original retail price and the seller reputation is below 98%, avoid. Many HK sellers sells original figures and at a good price. Ebay is a good source if you know how to use it.

Yes, unfortunately, I have 2 fake figures in my collection. I bought both when I was still quite new to collecting figures, so I didn't know what was real and what was fake.

eBay is a good source for figures ONLY IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING. There are many sellers on eBay that have BOTH real and fake figures for sale. For example, I know a seller on eBay who gets their inventory from AAA Anime and Diamond Comics (official distributors for the Japanese manufacturers), but the eBay seller also imports fake figures and sells them as well!

I wouldn't own fake figures just because they are 'fine' to have. It's the best thing in the world to have a legit & professionally made and painted PVC figure. It hurts your wallet to spend a lot on a figure but it doesn't hurt as much as looking at a fake figure sitting in your room somewhere.

I cannot imagine a collector that collects both fake and legit.

But also, I refuse to buy original nendoroid... because I find paying that much (3000-3500 yen) for such a small figures is ridiculous (that's why I bough the bootleg nendoroid haruhi for about 7 usd, sure there's many flaw in its painting here and there, but nothing I couldn't fix).

But fake figures will never be as good as the original ones.. I guess it's just not worth using good material and decent paint job to make fake ones.

Well, I have to be very careful when purcahsing figures. I have to see if it's real or not. The box is the first thing I see. If the box color seems off or something or if it doesn't have the company logo, I can tell if it's fake or not. Next I look at the figure inside the box. From what I see, I can tell if it's fake or not. Third, the store, is the store known for selling bootleg goods or not. Those are the things I see. If it's too cheap, then it's a fake I feel.

Rip.off. Indeed; although the colour scheme looks somewhat nice, maybe this can be used for a special edition? I have 2 fakes in my collection. Both from Pia Carrot. They were dirt cheap so I bought them, before noticing that the origin was China. Nuff said. I keep them around to remind myself of what happend if you go for the lowest price...

She doesn't look too bad, actually.. I still wouldn't buy one though, especially if it's expensive. If it were cheap, then I'd snatch it up in an instant xD

Well if they're official kits but painted by fans then they arn't fake. But if they're fake kits....

Or if you meant something completely different, like these people actually sculpted them, themselves, well thats a whole different ballgame my friend.

My first figure (Saber) was a fake. The price was quite cheap, and so was the quality. i only buy originals now... ---> Check for some identifications of it's originality and buy from 'selected' places.

Fake figures are just crap because there're always indecent people who cheats other persons by telling that thay have the original to sell.

And it's true that the originals are sometimes too expensives and the only option is to buy something cheap but I prefer to get one original than ten fakes.

    Greetings.
