The graphics card to provide the ultimate gaming experience?
Spent my first few years in Japan as a PC otaku going to Akihabara over and over again to exchange parts that weren't compatible with other parts. Gave up on the DIY PC scene and decided to stick with laptops as I do most of my gaming on the consoles anyway.
Are you a desktop or laptop user?

Self built desktop for me; don't trust pre-built machines as far as I could throw them. Also I can build a machine for a third of the price of an equal pre-built one. Wouldn't mind a laptop though just wish they were easily upgradeable.

I also built my computer...party to avoid the windows tax.

      I use GNU linux (ubuntu 8.10 x64 version)...as for a comment....

That video card Danny is showing is one generation behind what I use...

      My personal computer specs are:

      Intel q9300 (quad core)
      4 GB ram
Nvidia Geforce 9800GT (not GTO unfortunately)
      1TB SATA Hard drive
      18x dvd burner

That being said, I also like my eee pc (although I replaced the os with eee ubuntu)

They don't sell linux-based pcs in brick and mortar stores. And also you need to spend tons of $$ to buy a computer with decent specs. In the future I plan to give up on Fry's (I hate mail in rebates), and just buy parts via the internet. I've also had a bad experience with one of the video cards I bought there.

I guess the novelty in that card is to have a ”loli in a box” (you can hardly see hardware once it's in a case).

I built my current desktop a year ago, and got a video card from 2006 for casual gaming. It's fairly simple to build a PC these days, probably easier than yesteryear; just have a fellow geek review choices.

On US boxes you'll see hot 3D rendered girls, the 2D loli is just aiming at the Japanese audience. So it's nothing special about the box art since they obviously prefer 2D over 3D.

Im both a desktop & laptop user. I build my own because factory made ones are overpriced & performance is average. Desktop for heavy gaming & laptop for paperwork & other things.

Soon ill have to get some specialization & a job as a desktop support techie & specialze in hardware, because I like to get my hands dirty...

And with this card under the hood, ill have to clean my desktop machine 24/7 coz of constant nosebleeds X-D

'sides, my graphics card on my new desktop has an Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS card (without the sexy girl pic), & she is a lot more hotter than the one in the pic X'D.

I used to build a new machine every 2 years to keep up on the PC gaming scene. When I got my first laptop that all changed. Now, I seem to be randomly acquiring laptops. which really isn't that good of a thing. The only time I build a PC is during X-mas to make extra cash. The only problem I have with building my own is it usually costs more then to buy one from a manufacturer.

I have my own self-built desktop which, for only $1200, runs Crysis at 28fps on Very High. I've seen nearly $3000 Dell and HP machines not even reach 25fps.

I'm also planning on getting a laptop pretty soon. If only the Mobile Metro would actually exist--I'd buy that thing up instantly.

Desktop user, my standards are too high to get a reasonably priced laptop.
You can get a 2000 dollar laptop, and I could still outperform it with an 800 dollar (custombuilt) desktop.

So not that much of a fan of laptops.

Only use I would have for a laptop anyway would be a media extender, so that I could run around watching my anime and tv shows.

but then again, most laptops can only do that for about two hours.
so do you see my point?

If you get the right laptop, you can smack around a lot of desktops. Though I will say for $800 you are coming up a bit short in terms of performance.

Desktop DIY FTW. The only comp I will ever buy pre-built now is a laptop. Desktops are much better to work with overall, easier to see screen, less awkward typing, etc. Though laptops have their own merits, so it all depends on the situation in which you need it.

    Yeah, I should've prolly used euro's
Sometimes I forget the difference in value.

Anyway, for about 800 euro's I could get 4 GB of low latency pc6400 ram, decent case, good amount of storage, 8800GTS (G92) and either an E8400 or Q9300, or if you spend it wisely, a Q9450.
All of the above are pretty easy to OC aswell.

Can't think of a reasonably priced laptop that can match that

There's not much point in getting a quad core CPU since most games nowadays still do not take advantage over all of the 4 cores. In fact having a quad core CPU might even drop a few frames for certain games. Graphic cards are more important if you are into gaming. Getting something like a quad SLI or Crossfire setup = WIN . That is if you have the monies

Yeah, but not every application is a game :P. I need a quadcore for my daily use.

Besides, games are catching up, games such as supreme commander take advantage of all four cores.

Four way crossfire isn't exactly money well spent either, the first two cards will give you 160% performance, but after the first two it's all negligable.
Nor are the drivers for that kind of SLI/xfire fuctional. (enough)

Reading these comments, seems like most people have the same sentiments. I'm using a MacBook Pro for most everything - I have a DIY desktop, but I haven't upgraded it in two years or so and the MacBook smacks it around in terms of performance now. All I use it for is storage, since I had a couple of large internal hard disks lying around.

The only thing I really hate is that I can't customize this thing.

Since i'm mainly a pc gamer I like to have a good powerful one. Because of that I prefer desktop over latop. I guess though a latop can be useful to have sometime.

i have both. my pc is kinda old, already 8 years and still going strong! now it's my torrent rig as well as my file server.

my laptop is the powerful one. normally used for testing programming algorithms and photoshopping.

luckily, both can still go to dannychoo!!! that's a good thing!

Interesting box art. I wonder if she's trying to tell you where to stick the card?

As for the system debate, I have done a DIY desktop (And usually do). I use both. I have a desktop for mos tof my work, but I have a laptop for some portability and for gaming (Table-top RPG gaming. I use it to save paper printing modules.)

I use my desktop at home most of the time to check the internet and because I am a fan of old games (10+ years old, some 20!) and they will not work with my laptop because it runs Vista.

The laptop is what I take with me when I am up at school. I occasionally use it during the summer because I like some of the programs on it for image editing and file conversions... hmmm but now I realized I can do that here on my desktop...

I used my laptop mostly for work and I do my gaming on my DIY Hardcore Gaming Rig. I'm using an Inno3D Geforce 8800GT OC version. But inno3d doesn't use that kind of design on their cards.

It says on the box "Crysis", does this card include a full game of Crysis? Dang... with a powerful card like plus the design on the box and on the card itself makes me want to rub my dolphin on my rig... ;)

Hmm, I would say for gaming, I use mainly consoles, I do use PC's for gaming, but these days, with the improved online services of consoles, they seem more natural, but then that also depends what games your playing. Other than that, i use a desktop PC, i will be getting a laptop when i go to university, so that should be pretty soon ^_^ *crosses fingers for Sony Vaio FZ38M*

Desktop, simply because you get twice as much power for the same price, and you can customise the parts to what you need, and I don't need portability.

Laptops are hard to customise or upgrade or repair, poor performance (graphics) low storage space and hard drive speed bottleneck, higher cost for manufacturer premium, bad keyboard (no number pad or inconvenient function keys), non-1080 LCD screens (or no option of screen size), have battery costs.

That's quite a lot of cost and inconvenience and is not practical as an everyday computer. It's advantages are that it's portable, quiet (but my desktop has customisations to make it quiet), and uses less electricity (but I wouldn't take that huge sacrifice in performance).

I put my computers together. I can customise my parts because none of the prepackaged systems really suit my needs. They skimp on power supply units and cases and are usually too noisy with bad graphics cards. Also looking for parts will allow you to find the lowest price for each part (quality is judged by manufacturer and model) and see that most stores rip you off.

I never had compatibility problems, because if you know what part you need, you generally know enough about it to know if it is compatible. Also I didn't start in the deep end making a whole system, but had to upgrade parts over the years and eventually you know every part in the system.

MacBook and 24" iMac here, maybe iMac doesn't really fall to desktop category here because you cant really change many parts in it.

But still, both kickass machines, wouldnt change back to "traditional PC" or Windows only computer anymore :)

I use both, I store everything on my desktop and a back up drive and only keep stuff I need on my laptop like newly downloaded anime, manga, some games, and copy's of all of my homework assignments. I use an Alienware laptop since I play a lot of pc games and I love it, but its about time I bought a new one, going on 5 years with the one I have right now. After I come back from London and Rome, I leave on Friday, I'll finally retire it and order myself another one from Alienware.
