Hey Danny, this is pretty off topic but I'd love it if you had time to reply! :)

I'm visiting Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka in a few weeks on holidays. I've never been before and, if you have time, could you maybe list two or three things you'd consider must sees? I already have a big list, but I'd lover to hear what you think! If you have time, of course.

Also, should I be carrying much cash on me when I go shopping? Or will a credit card suffice most places?

    Thanks!

Sounds like you are going where I went last October!

Working from memory so am more than willing to be corrected if I give a wrong piece of geographic detail!

Tokyo- Hirajuku (Takeshita St on a Sunday is a must!!!) Akihabara and Shibuya are tourist staples + Studio Ghibli (which suburb/ward??)(you must pre-book this in advance so maybe not a good suggestion if you are going in a couple of weeks (school hols Im guessing). You can book over there at a combini but it is better to do in Oz IMHO

Kyoto- Toei Movie Village/Park (POWER RANGERS and GODZILLA!!!!!) and the Temples-you must visit the temples...esp. the Golden Pavillion. Himeji Castle is also worth a stickybeak!

re money...I used cash all the time as cards were awkward (not all places took cards and using ATM's in Japan isnt an experience for the faint hearted IMHO!). I found signing for stuff strange as the checking of my signature caused some angst in the first place I used my credit card (travel card mentioned below) in (Studio Ghibli of all places!)
Post offices have ATM's and some combini's but unusual to find an 'outside 'ATM' ...also have to make sure your card works O/S (one type of card works best but cant remember...written on back of card (sirrius?) not the actual bank).
I would recommend an O/S travel (credit/ATM) card in US$$ as a backup to your cash (I took one from ANZ, you get two, they are protected etc...just need to organise sooner than later)
Japan is pretty safe re money so you should be able to leave part of it at your accommodation with out it being disturbed!
Just have to work out your budgets for the day as its easy to spend $$ in some places!

Hope this helps a little...http://tristanforsyth.wordpress.com is my microblog from my trip which may give you some insights into things to do!

Ehhh..? ATMs aren't for the faint of heart? I never had a problem with them. ^^; I stayed in Asakusa and they had few outside ATMs that were easy enough to use. Especially because they had an 'English' option.

I think it might be cards with "Cirrus" printed on the back that work well because that's what mine had and it worked fine. :D

Small world! I'm going back at the end of April and visiting the same places. Here's my Tokyo recommendations:
Oedo Onsen Monogatari in Odaiba for a great time at a natural hot spring.
      Sensoji Temple in Asakusa.
      Ueno park and museums there.

As for money, take some cash with you but the 7-11 stores atm works fine with Visa cards if you need more.

Welcome to HK, Danny. Just make sure you don't breath too much of the dirty air and walk faster than you normally walk in Japan and you should be fine. XD

Oh and Google has just added the awesome Street View function for Google Maps HK, so if you're at a lost of what your destination will look like when planning where to go, you can check it out.

The hotel Danny is staying in is very expensive. And people, the smoke you see in the air is called smog. It's a portmanteau of smoke and fog. The air quality in HK is very bad.
