Japanese Manga

Saw a news report this morning about how there are more n more folks who prefer to buy the entire volume of a particular manga series rather than waiting for each one to come out.
The reasons they give are so that they don't have to be kept waiting in suspense for the next edition and also so that they can relax for a whole day reading the entire volume.

While manga can be found at the book stores, its difficult to find complete sets which is why there have been quite a few sites that have been popping up like Mangazenkan and Otonagai - more from this google search result too.
I'm not particularly fussed but if I start a new series late and enjoy what I read, I usually try to get all of them in one go. How about you?

And how about anime? Do you prefer to watch as each episode is aired so you can keep in the loop with what others are talking about or wait until the series has ended before starting the marathon?

    Oh, I see you there
    Little tiger
    Waiting so patiently
    For my return

Your eyes so big and bright
Your cheeks so full and flushed
Your hair so tame and tendered
Your skin so soft and smooth

    Oh, I see you there
    Little tiger
    Waiting so patiently
    And ready to pounce

This is a difficult question for me -

I do LOVE me some good anime/manga binges on those slow days where there isn't much to do. (These days are rare if I am on an mmo addiction. WoW free for last 2 weeks btw !)

But sometimes the week to week suspense makes a series more enjoyable. Especially if it's a suspenseful one. It has that "hunger is the best spice" kind of effect imo.

Slice of Life ones are ultimate for binges. I think I had watched all of Marimite S1 in a single day. Good times =D

I'll agree there, if the ep's are current, I'll bide my time *sorta* for each new one... otherwise, if I have a lot to go thru to "catch up" then it's no biggie.... *old fan of ElfQuest, not manga, but I waited impatiently for the new release each month way back then!*

btw, danny san have u heard about 東京都青少年健全育成条例? (http://mitb.bufsiz.jp/)

With manga I buy each one as soon as it's released. I don't mind waiting for the next volume. Especially when I'm following so many different series.
However, with anime I typically wait for the series to finish before I start watching. I have changed this rule since Durarara started airing, though. It's just so good I have to watch each episode once it's been released!!

When it comes to manga I usually buy the newest release instead of waiting for the entire set to come out. Considering the typical wait between releases for licensed manga here in the States is about 3-4 months it would be years before I can get an entire series. That is, of course, dependent on the length of the story and volume releases in Japan as well as licensing date. One could certainly lose interest after such a long time (^^;)

In terms of manga I tend to garner interest into a series late in the game. I didn't get into Love Hina until well after the entire set was out. Claymore and Strawberry 100% saw somewhat similar scenarios, though both of those have a long way to go before completion...unfortunately. I'm not sure why Strawberry 100% is taking so long, it's already done and over with.

Speaking of which, Fairy Tail Vol. 10 and Pastel Vol. 15 are out in a couple of weeks which is good since the wait has been rather grimacing. I actually tend to lose interest or forget about a series in the time in-between releases then it rises when I pick up the volume. Think of as a wave, day of release and subsequent days after my interest crests then dips down with the intervening time being the trough then rising again approaching the next volume date. That gets worse for series that are still on-going in Japan and have slow release dates for new chapters. Imagine my despair when I was side winded with the news that after Vol. 15 of Claymore, all releases would be 6-7 months apart...and the story is barely past the half-way point in its serialization.

Anime is a bit different. If it's a new series that I have great interest in I will watch each new episode once it's subbed then with candles and incense pray that it gets released over here. From there, once volume one hits the shelves begins the cycle according to buying manga. However, the wait time isn't bad for DVDs. Usually I only have to wait about a year or even less to obtain the full set...though that is only for a 24-episode series (>^^)> I'm not fond of ThinPaks and certain Box Sets...though will consider purchasing if price is an issue.

I prefer reading/watching as soon as the new volume/episode comes out ^^; If not I'll be watching last season's anime in a batch instead of the new anime in the current season. I think that waiting each week for the new episode keeps something that I'll look foward to in the following week ^^ Not sure why some people like to watch everything at one go ><

I will nearly always follow a manga by the chapter and an anime by the episode.

However, I definitely prefer when I am able to procure an entire series in one go, especially with the omake that the full volumes have.

    There are no manga volumes readily on sale here, so I guess I can't answer that question. But as far as anime goes, I usually d-l the episodes as soon as they're out, but I don't watch em until I have the time. Still got a huge backlog to work off ^^;

For manga, I don't read much so I just follow the 2 series' I read bu each chapter. Often it takes a while for them to be licensed here so when they're released they are done so in volumes.
As for anime, I like to keep up to date on the current season. Only marathon through whole series' if it's something that I did not have time for.

I'm "saving" manga for when I'm able to start reading it in Japanese. It's one of the many incentives for all the study I'm doing!

In general, I don't mind waiting for entire series of anime because I like to consume stuff in larger blocks than individual episodes tend to allow. Usually I'll try to watch 2-4 episodes at once, sometimes more if I'm really hooked.

I usually don't buy manga at the get to of it's first release. Usually afterwards....then again, I live in a town that doesn't have a lot of manga selection except for Barnes and Noble. So, I'll purchase the first and see from there.

As for anime, NOTHING airs in the U.S. unless you purchase ANIME Network or watch Cartoon Network late at night (unless someone knows something I don't....). I usually go to the free sites and watch anime that way. If anime aired for me weekly, I would watch it as it releases. Unfortunately, I purchase my anime instead and when I do, I usually purchase the whole set so I can have a buffet of anime shows!

ONE OF THE MANY REASONS WHY I WANT TO LIVE IN JAPAN INSTEAD. ^-^

I pretty much always wait for the anime to finish airing before I start watching it, because I find it more enjoyable and convenient to be able to watch the amount I want to watch. Especially if it's building up and then just quits "now you gotta wait one week lol pwnt", for me I can just watch the next episode if I feel like. Tho I don't really follow the new series as much because of that but will try to pick them up when they finish airing. The control is nice as I got all and can choose when to watch it. :3

I think keeping up with the monthly/weekly/biweekly manga chapters (or anime episodes) builds up your interest and gives you time to think about the characters and storyline, it makes the enjoyment more pronounced. Most of the time if I watch/read anime/manga all in one go there's barely time to absorb what's going on so one is less attached.

For collection purposes of course buying the whole tankoubon/dvd box is better. This is when you start considering what titles you really liked and decide are worth your money and space. I wish I was able to support more titles than am able to...

I read and watch the manga and anime, respectively, as they are released. It would be nice if I did buy them as a volume set, this would only apply to a series that is already completed and I haven't heard of until I find out about it.

I remember watching Code Geass R2 every week when they first aired; that particular series had me in suspense week after week and it didn't bother me the slightest.

This is a trend that we in Western comic books have noticed. More and more people are buying trade paperbacks (complete volumes) rather than monthly publications.

I personally prefer full volumes over smaller prints. And I think it's a much stronger business model also, as most people prefer a much more complete work, rather than dribs and drabs.

Whatever though, just as long as I still get paid for doing the artwork.

I prefer to buy as each volume gets released. It sucks being an English fan since volumes are usually released with more time in between. It really sucks waiting 3 months for a release, especially on a good cliffhanger. What's bad is when a manga, like School Rumble, takes more than 3 months. Not sure why, but the company is going to release 3 volumes in June instead of a regular schedule. :(

However reading manga online week after week is great. Cliffhangers and you don't have to wait 3 months.

This is why I do not have a collection of either kind.

When it comes to anime, I always prefer buying it as a complete set. Less space, saves me money, and so on. However, I do enjoy watching it at least once or twice a week. Sometimes 5 times a week, thanks to the FUNimation Channel.

And manga series? I have not collected a single series in months. Mostly because the ones I do try liking (such as "Shakugan no Shana") end up having a horrible "volume by volume" schedule. While others like "Lucky Star" end up going from being one I like to having stories and characters I have no interest in.

    Oh well... This is why I tend to "re-shuffle" what I want to get each year, hoping that I find a winner in the end. (^_^;;

    I don't buy mangas, I just view them on-line as they're released.
And I'm not a fan of anime series, I prefer manga instead.

It depends on how you define "manga". I guess in Japan, they're all released in big compilation magazines. We don't have too many of those here, so we get nothing but the "tankoubon". We really don't have a choice but to buy those manga tankoubon here. But either way, I buy them as they come out so I don't lose track of what I have and don't have ^^; And I do buy lots of them as you have seen, lol.

As for anime, I'm a bit mixed, so I didn't vote. I like either choices depending on the situations.

It really depends on what anime DVD or manga I'm buying. If the manga d is not well known I'll buy it one at a time.If the manga is well known I'll wait for the entire series to be finished and buy the set if I want. With DVD's I buy the entire series at once.

As for me, I would refer reading the manga first, then buy anime after I read one.
