Japanese School Uniforms

One reason why I enjoy trooping is that I get to meet so many different people who I would not normally meet - have made so many friends in Tokyo just from meeting them in the streets ^^; On the way home on the train, I always seem to be chatting to an elderly lady or man who starts talking to me curious about this "robot" outfit ^^;
Met these great bunch of school students on the way to TBS for some recording the other day.

Japanese School Uniforms

All these students are in high school and most of the high schools get their students to wear uniforms.
After the Meiji Restoration, there wasn't any school uniform policy. A need for some sort of uniform became evident from the fact that students would attend school dressed up in garments based on their family background. Male students who were from a samurai family would bring their swords to class while those from a trading family would come in their trading gear. Females at the time wore kimono.

Japanese School Uniforms

During the end of the Meiji period and throughout the Taisho period, western style school uniforms were introduced because they were more functional and practical than the traditional garments. It was mostly the male students who were in uniform at the beginning. Depending on the school, females at the time either wore a suit top with skirt, kimono or sailor uniform. If you remember from the most awesome Taisho Yakyuu Musume, some of the female students wore kimono while some sailor uniform. Sailor uniform was introduced in Taisho 9 (1920's).

Japanese School Uniforms

Back in the UK, none of the schools I went to required school uniforms so didn't get to experience what it was like to wear one. Did you or do you wear a school uniform? Does it look good as well as functional or?
Would be love to see what school uniforms look like in your region - post links to images/articles in the comments ^o^
I think Thai have cute uniforms for the ladies but not sure if the photos I saw were really school uniforms ^^;;

        In my opinion school uniforms grant visually the same financial status (sure for some familys the uniform is expensive). With everyone wearing the same, nobody can make a fool of someone wearing old clothes.

        And the girlies look cute :3

    Not many uniforms to be found around here anymore to be honest. Just a few schools, and it's usually limited to just wearing having to wear a plaid skirt or black jeans, knee-high socks or stockings and a top in a particular color. The guys just wear a jacket (in a particular color) and usually black jeans.

    I never wore one though, I went to a no-uniform school. (^_^)

      I agree, but when you reach the university level that's a bit more difficult to manage (especially if you're school is huge).

    During my last year of Jr High, my school instituted uniforms. This ended up being a very controversial topic as it was a public school, and public schools here don't do the uniform thing. That's for the private schools.

    One of the issues for this, which was completely different from the those of the adults, is that we students have been wearing what we wanted (at the appropriate moderate level dress code) all our lives. When suddenly forced to wear a uniform, we students were less than thrilled. The dress code was abolished the following year.

    What was this uniform - A green or while solid color polo shirt and khaki pants.
    A lot of school uniforms I have seen in the area, is pretty similar. Usually a Polo Shirt (sometimes a button down collar shirt if your fairy formal) and a pair of slacks/khakis.

      Same here but it went into affect after I graduated...

      My younger siblings had it ruff and they were almost exiled from school, beacues they didn't wear there, "school dress requirements" as they called it, I had to pick them up an hour or so after there first day and they told me that if they will not get in to mandatory dress code that they will be kick out....

    Haha Nike Dunks look populaar!

    I love the look of boys' school uniforms. The people I encounter prefer blazers though. The gakuran just looks so awesome to me.

    I wish I had uniforms in high school. It would make high school life that much easier since I wouldn't have to be worrying about buying new clothes. Would totally have more time studying (or playing video games) instead of looking for what to wear. Would also have more money to buy anime and manga and such instead of clothes.

    Japanese uniforms are rather unique! Mine was just a normal looking office shirt (crumple free) topped with the schools crest (Is the common style here, except for chinese schools or other prestigious schools)

    Uniforms are great and bad at the same time. The good thing is that everybody, rich or poor, wears the same thing, everybody is equal, and you dont have to decide on styles every single day

    whereas the bad and (probably) good thing is that you cannot enter entertainment joints (Arcades etc.) with uniforms here.

    All schools in Singapore have school uniforms, except the Polytechnics. My secondary school uniform looked quite alright. White top and navy blue pants.

    Some schools here require girls to wear pinafores. I wonder if that's only limited to Singapore?

    When I was in school in the UK we always had uniforms. Secondary school started off with blazer (jacket) shirt and tie but changed whilst I was there to jumper, shirt and tie.

    Personally I think that it's better to have a uniform than not.

    Back at my old school in the UK, we still wear uniforms like (as infinitehippos said) Blazers, shirts and ties. Then when u get to 6th form, we would then be told to wear suits. Also when i was back at school, if i had an engineering class, i wouldn't need to come in, in uniform due to the fact that the school didn't want us to get em damaged. (Mine was a bit burnt by the occasional plaing around with a Bunsen Burner ^^;) But i left my old school last year for college and i feel more comfortable in casual clothes.
    I do however miss wearing a uniform as it does get u into the working mood.

    Public schools in Australia normally have school uniform. Private schools even more so.

    Something about my local public high school dress policy is here: http://redbplaishs.eq.edu.au/wcmss/index.php/unipol.html. Unfortunately I don't seem to be able to find any good pictures except a few very small ones on that website.

    all about monies around here.. if its a private, usually catholic school, uniforms were mandated, but since u were paying a boat load, the cost of uniforms woulldn't bother ya. now public schools, most in the US is casual with a dress code, but no uniform, though gym classes required one (which alot of people wouldn't wash for awhile.. >_<) cost of the uniforms are the big thing, usually I got a couple new shirts and pants before the new school year, but the cost of a full uniform would cost to much (not quite poor family growing up.. but close enough)

    I personally like uniforms, saves on what to where from day to day, and doesn't wear out ur clothes, thou my current job is casual (barefoot right now!)

    We have uniforms here all the way to high school. With the exception of some state universities and a handful of private ones, even college level students are required to wear uniforms too (that includes me).

    I think they're good because it saves me the effort of deciding what to wear each day. Sometimes though, I wish that I can wear whatever the hell I want just so I can express myself more ^__^

    I had to wear uniforms at mine here in the UK. Primary school was any shoes, black trousers and a white polo shirt under a burgundy sweatshirt with the school's crest on in white. You had to wear it from years 1 - 6.
    Secondary school was black work/posh shoes, black work/posh trousers, and a white polo shirt underneath a black sweatshirt with the yellow school crest. That was from years 7 - 11. Sixth form was whatever you wanted.

    I hated wearing them. Everyone always did. Everyone always loved the couple of times a year when the school would have a "Mufty Day" and you paid £1 to not wear uniform for the day, though. ^^;

    http://www.lns.org.uk/ <---- our school
    If you watch the slideshow of pictures all my classmates are the ones in blazers ^^
    I don't think any pictures of me are up yet ^^;

    I went to Catholic schools my entire elementary and high school life. The uniforms they had were pretty comfortable, nothing bad about 'em. I loved not having to worry about what to wear the next day.

    I never got to wear any uniform and feel little glad that I was not forced into wearing one but at the same time, I wonder what would it feel like to be in a uniform ^^; At least you don't have to worry about what to wear to school is one of the benefits of wearing a uniform I suppose.

    There is no uniform for public school in Quebec, Canada. Although more than half of the private school have one or a fairly strict dress code.

    I went to a Catholic boys college (high school) here in New Zealand so we had to wear fairly pricey uniforms, not only that...my intermediate years (middle school) had an ugly ass uniform as well.

    So I been wearing the damned things for a while...although the College one was pretty sweet

    In Malaysia, boys wore white short sleeves shirt and a navy blue (primary schools) / army green (secondary schools) shorts or pants. Girls wore white short sleeves shirt beneath their navy blue (primary schools) / cyan (secondary schools) pinafores.

    My school uniforms;

    Prep School -- dark grey shorts for younger boys, long trousers for older boys. Black blazer with green piping. Cap. Light grey shirt. Regulation tie (can't remember the colours.)

    Public School -- Single breasted, single vented grey suit. White or pale blue shirt. Regulation tie. Each house had its own colours and there were special colours for various achievements in sports or academic pursuits. Girls were allowed to wear what they liked, more or less.

    No school uniforms in the public school system here. Personally, I like being able to wear whatever I want to school. Your own choice of clothes is a good way of expressing yourself to others. It's also interesting to see how other people in school dress and the various fashion senses that people have. But that's just my opinion ^^;;

    Most schools in Australia have a uniform.

    You can see my schools here: http://www.springwoodhighnsw.com.au/images/stories/uniform%20photos.pdf
    The girl in the first picture has a big jumper on, and even though it's not there, we are allowed to wear blouses and black skirts.
    Our school isn't very strict with uniform, unlike a few schools in our area. We all roll our sleeves and skirts up, and some of us were unenclosed shoes. ^^;
    Once you hit year 11 and 12, the uniform changes slightly, and instead of wearing green, you are allowed to wear grey and black.

    Australia definately has uniforms. Although, most of the strict rules are so they comply with OHS.
    Certainly in Japan they have more free choice over shoes, ours "have" to be black leather shoes.
    Conveniently I took a photo of my new year 12 jersey yesterday, so here it is.

    Back in elementary school I had to were a uniform since I attended an old, small private school.
    The only down side to them was that they weren't fit for the winter climates. I lived in the northeast part of the U.S. and the school would make use wait outside every morning until class starts. The only thing we got to keep warm was a very very thin sweater. -_-;

    Almost all schools in Australia, private or public, require uniform, but public are more flexible with uniforms (e.g. any shoes, jewellery, don't have to tie back long hair, nail polish).
    I've been at private schools all my life. The one I'm currently attending has a uniform (like many other Australian private girls schools) of a tunic with a collared shirt underneath. For winter it's a pleated tunic with long sleeved shirt + tie + knee socks or stockings. It is VERY strict. We cannot customise our uniform in any way, we must wear black leather lace-up school shoes, we have to tie back our hair if it is long... etc.

    I went to Catholic School until the equivalent of my first year of Junion High (I lived in El Salvador at that time) so I wore a uniform. It was a blue jsk (plated) with a round collar shirt. We also wore our knee socks. It was alrigh but I felt more comfortable wearing regular clothes through my school years in the U.S. However, i do have a penchant for skirts ^__^;; If they are pleated, the better.

    Since my school was kindergarten through 12th grade, I wore uniforms for my entire career, it was a private school. Our uniforms were simple. Boys wore khaki pants with a polo shirt, with the choice of a navy blue, red, or white shirt. I usually wore navy blue or red. For the girls they could either wear a white blouse with a skirt, or polo shirt with shorts on hot days. On colder days, girls usually wore pants, but black pants instead of the khaki.

    Uniforms are making a comeback here in the US. All Philadelphia public schools have them now and this trend is reaching the suburbs as well. The reason? Lowers truancy and helps cut down on the violence created by the different gangs/groups showing the "Colors" It has helped a lot.

    I have a love/hate relationship with uniforms. Makes life easier but they usually choose bad colours :/ Primary school was a green polo with any navy pants (or tartan skirt which was actually really cute!) and then high school was teal polos and denim/black pants. First year of senior high (year 11), we had no uniform (yay) but then for year 12 they introduced one(nave or white polos with navy pants) -_- And they said no black jeans! We wore them anyway. Public schools don't care so much and our school was one of the last ones in West Aus where you could still wear denim. But they all love polo shirts. I don't :( I wish I had button-up shirts and skirts and ties... But out of school now so I can wear them!

    In Indonesia, we have pretty much a variety of school uniforms because most schools here requires school uniforms. My school is a private school, so we get a nice-looking uniform like what they have in England and Japan although I think it doesn't fit the weather because we live in a tropical country. For instance, the boys in senior high have to wear a navy blue gakuran and brown-greyish pants and the girls have to wear navy blue suit jacket, white shirt with school-issued necktie ribbon and brown-greyish skirt. another option for boys and girls is the school hoodie. I mostly use the school hoodie for school and the suit jacket for cosplaying, since the girls senior high uniform in my school is similar to K-ON!
    but yeah, school uniform like my school's in Indonesia is quite a rare find. usually school just issued a simple school shirt and pants/skirt, and probably neckties.

    I wore uniform in my Protestant kindergarten, then uniform in my Catholic school til grade 4, then moved to Vancouver where I went to a Catholic elementary school which required uniform and then a Catholic high school, uniform as well. Safe to say I kinda liked girls in school uniforms after years of seeing them ^^;

    No uniforms where I live. But this means you can get people coming to school in the oddest things. Pajama bottoms are one of the more commonly seen oddities, but I have also seen a guy walking around in a kilt.

    I used to wear uniforms in elementary and junior high, and I used to complain a lot about how uncomfortable it was, the material was too thick..etc - we even had to wear regulation socks with the school logo on them! However, when I went to high school, we didn't have to wear uniforms and I realized how much I missed them. Having some sort of commonality with your fellow school mates was fun, plus having a uniform saved loads of time spent on coordinating outfits. haha.
    Would have loved to wear a gakuran, though. XP

    I find Australian schools here in Melbourne require uniforms as well. They're usually very different depending on the school, though. Some have ridiculously simple uniforms (boys wear white shirt and shorts, girls a one-piece frock). Others are quite cool (the blazers for both girls and boys).

    Of course, it also depends on the ones wearing them. Like with Japanese students, delinquents usually rip up or otherwise mangle their uniforms.

    All schools except for polytechnic here in Singapore has uniform ^^. My uniform consist of white shirt with 7 metal buttons, with the school logo, and white shorts. I'm wearing white shorts since I'm still in lower secondary, Will be wearing trousers next year. Girls wear white skirt instead of the shorts / trousers, but have the same shirt.

    No school uniforms where I grew up. Southern California.

    I think it would have been a good choice to start making folks where them because I was tired of seeing the early 90's styles (aka, pants sagged down and boxers visible) and don't get me started on what the girls were wearing. It distracted me during class seeing the girl's visible waist and short shorts. Especially when they needed to bend over for any reason. ^^;

    My school has navy blue blazers and then shirt, tie, and then we can choose between khakis or trousers. Here in the United States it's really rare for school's to have uniforms, although private and Catholic schools here do usually have a uniform or a strict dress code.

    I wore a school uniform all the way till high school where I was finally free to wear what ever I wanted ^^
    When I went to elementary school in Puerto Rico, the school uniform was a blue top with a plaid grey skirt. Wish I had photos, the uniform was so cute. Then I moved to New York and I had to wear an ugly yellow top with a plaid green skirt. I looked like a leprechaun T^T I have photos, will post if I find ^^
    Lastly in middle school, it was a neutral white top with a beige skirt.

    I went to a specialized public junior high school where we had to where uniforms. White Shirts Black or Blue Slacks along with shoes and a tie had to be worn at all times. There was also the school vest or sweater you could wear along with it as well. I later went to a private high school where we only had a dress code. Collared shirts, no blue jeans and no sneakers were the only requirements for boys.

    Well seeing the school uniforms from different countries for people who has not taste from their schooling life maybe tempting, but sometimes its a bit problematic as well. Japan has 2 types of season School Uniforms for both winter and summer but for certain countries, it just sticks to only summer school uniform (like in Malaysia or Singapore) or winter (any other countries i might know). But seeing someone possses a pair of uni's from other countries, its just like cosplay to them...(>3<)
