Got mail just now from a dannychoo.com reader who said that he'd like to share one of his projects with me - and boy is it one helluva project!
The AR Drone is a remote controlled quadrotor helicopter with built in wifi and 2 cameras - controlled via the iPod Touch or iPhone. Cant wait to get my hands on it!
In the mean time, check out the video and photos below.

And there is more - augmented reality games.

And for those who think its all CG - announced recently at the CES.

Well, thats really cool. But Remote control Helicoptors are nothing new. This one just has more bells and whistles which take a load of the pilot/Operator. So it hovers on its own.. dows a lot of things like that. . But half the fun of a remote control helicopter is learnind and mastering those processes.

And prolly for the cost of this gadget and the Iphone together to use it. You can afford two or three regular small nearly indestrucitble RC Helicoptors.

i might have an idea how to build something like this by using wireless access point, IP cam and RC Helicopter
1.put them together on RC helicopter
2.now the problem is your AP need a supply, you can connect it with RC helicopter battery and don't forget to use voltage regulator to set the voltage equal with the voltage needed by AP, repeat step 2 for IP cam.
3.now turn on your laptop, access your IP cam and control the helicopter using the remote, have a safe flight.
i haven't tried it yet, but it seems work fine, and maybe you'll need a large helicopter that strong enough to lift those things

I've done some computer vision stuff for a coaxial helicopter, so I've worked under stricter payload constraints than a quadrotor. From what I've seen, IP cams tend to be bulky, suck more power, and incur more overhead through the network stack. Instead, I've used a Panasonic KX141 with a 2.4GHz transmitter and a USB receiver. The receiver can be used by DirectShow so it interfaces easily with other apps (OpenCV!) or players.

True, but I know people that are hardcore RC pilots that use this kind of stuff everyday. I couldn't begin to imagine how much money is poured into their machines either, actually I've wanted something like this for the longest time. It is a great hobby, but expensive.

What no thermal or night vision capabilities? Sorry I don't think even the law enforcement agencies or military would use this. Too fragile and lacking the options the current drones have. The hulls made out fo the same foam you find in car bumper's it wouldn't be sturdy enough to survive a single blast from a shotgun or round or two from any other firearm. So I doubt the military or law enforcements agencies would use it.
