Space Battleship Yamato

Certainly like the look of this - Space Battleship Yamato live action starring Kimura Takuya. Unfortunately will have to wait until December when it hits Japanese theaters.

And how about the anime version movie now showing in the theaters?

Any Yamato fans here?

Yeah, the Japanese are great with Anime and stuff, but they don't usually have a flare for Live Action. I'm impressed too!

dragonball evolution is no good, Blood the vampire is no good too, FF spirit within is no good too, all street fighter movies are no good too, hollywood adaptation of godzilla is great but the story is totally wrong for a godzilla movie (too small, too weak, etc)

Atom Boy was created by Imagi Studio from Hongkong

        If you want to make a great movie, stay away from hollywood -__-;

I will admit that Hollywood has made some bad movies but you need to get some facts straight. The first two movies on your rant were made in Japan. FF TSW was made in Japan and the US by HiroNobu SakaGuchi. Street fighter was never supposed to to win an Academy award. Godzilla was an adaptation on the series. Not the series itself. It's Astro Boy not Atom Boy and it was created in a Japanese manga in 1952 So why do you hate Hollywood so much?

As far as Japanese movies go, I only like the Death Note movies, Battle Royal, and some Akira Kurosawa movies, out of all the tons and tons and tons I've seen. As far as special effects go I just think Japanese movies don't compare to American movies, and maybe it is that the Japanese movies they market over here always seem to be like B movie quality, I have never really seen a solid truly awesome Japanese live action movie. I mean Machine girl... Yoyo Cop... and *shrugg* Bikini Samurai Squad... give me a break. A lot of people really liked Tikashi Miike's Dead or Alive trilogy, but I found it slow, boring, and just down right odd. I didn't think Ju-oh or Ringu was any good either. Also watched a few of Kitano Takeshi's movies and they were just blah to me. Suicide CLub was a horrid film. So I am just really skeptical when it comes to Japanese live action. Sorry this rant went on longer than I thought.

Also, The Space Battle Ship Yamato series has always kind of thrown me off because it just seems so so Japanese. Like it feels like to me to really appreciate it you have to be Japanese. I mean obviously it displays a lot of Japanese pride, the Yamato was the biggest battleship ever to be constructed by man and was the pride of the Imperial navy back in WWII, which is cool and all... but I mean I'm American, you know. So it is just kind of strange for me. You know what I'm talking about? Maybe its just me...

I know what you mean. I have seen a lot of "J" movies i like but i think that they are a little more difficult to follow for the average international viewer than American movies are. Japan is a homogeneous society and as such approaches things from that perspective. America is far more diverse and must approach things like this with that in mind, hence the popularity of American film in the international community.

I totally agree with you. Actually, one of the reasons I really enjoyed Kurosawa's movies (and the main reason many people enjoy them) is that he was highly influenced by western style movies, and in fact a lot of Japanese don't really like his movies. Also in a interview the director of Death Note said he did his best to make the movies more international than the average Japanese movie. It still is really Japanese oriented to me, but I like Death Note as a manga and an anime and as far as a film interpretation goes they are pretty good. Battle Royal I was really into as a teen and it was kind of like a fight the power kind of thing and a "My girl and I vs. the world" kind of thing. With anime though, it is different. ANime is very colorful, the characters show a wide range of emotions, and usually there is a really strong and epic story to be told. Anime is definitely more international. But every so often I watch an anime and I just am like, "This is TOO Japanese!"

Actually there is this really cool British TV I'm sure everyone here has heard of, but just in case called Japanorama and it is all about Japanese pop culture and has a lot on Japanese cinema and other interesting Japanese stuff. Great show. I think you can still watch full episodes on youtube. I think.

Except the characters looked aged correctly and portrayed closely (at least visually with the exception of Nova?) and the small tiny bit in the trailer gives the impression of being a telling of the established story instead of a reboot..

..so no, not like a Star Trek film ripoff at all actually.

I remember growing up in the late 70's watching this cartoon on Sunday Morning's.
It was always a treat to catch an episode before breakfast and going to church.
I have never seen the entire series but would like to see a well done Live Action pulled off.
Hopefully well get a English sub title or translation.

I liked hearing the old theme song in the live-action trailer. Remakes or LA versions hardly ever use the original's music.

That said, the LA trailer seems chopped at the end. Has anyone found a longer version?
