A most fantastic movie indeed. Its not just watching a movie but watching a work of art. The whole film is breathtaking and watching it in 3D for the whole duration was simply stunning. If you have the option of watching it at an IMAX then pay the extra for it.
The 3D was so good that I would occasionally remove the 3D glasses to see what it looked like in 2D. Very likely to go and watch it again. Folks in Tokyo can go to the IMAX at Lazona Kawasaki.
Japanese trailer below - as like most Japanese trailers, it contains spoilers.

And how about Avatar on the iPhone?

I saw the trailer a few weeks ago when I went to see 2012. They're doing the spoilers-in-the-trailer thing a lot here too. ^^;; The story seems mundane, but will probably see it sooner or later since most of my theatre visits place picture before story.

I think Avatar 3D will change cinema for the next decade - James Cameron is one crazy director. That's why he's successful. (Spoiler!) Story-wise I thought it was a little like Dances with Wolves and some parts reminded me of FF 12. But the movie did inspire me to want to jump from tree to tree ...

Agreed. I guess I agree with everyone else that the special effects are amazing, but when they start saying "movie of the year", I wonder what else they see in the movie. I didn't think the story was all that interesting and just reminded me of a bunch of other movies I'd seen before.

I thought District 9 was an interesting, original concept that was done well with great sfx and action, and it didn't feel like a kids movie which Avatar did at times.

It's been in the works longer than Avatar the cartoon, so I don't think that's exactly a fair comment. The Last Airbender doesn't have "Avatar" attached to the title, so I'd worry more about if the movie is good, rather than if other people will see it was a rip off.

James Cameron's Avatar was a great film, there's only so much you can do with the central plot but they did well with it. It truly was a visual experience, especially with all the glowing plants and bugs :D

Movie trailers lie. It’s a fact that has bit me in the ass many times.
Usually I am fooled into seeing a bad movie by an interesting trailer. (I am looking at you Sphere). This time the opposite occurred I was lulled into low expectations by a trailer that looked remarkably stupid, only to find one of the best Science fiction films of the last 2 decades waiting for me Never have I been so pleasantly surprised by a movie.
James Cameron’s Avatar is 2 hours and 40 minutes of pure entertainment.
Never was I bored for an instant.

It’s story is a simple, and well trodden one, Big bad civillization has come to take from Noble savages. in lesser hands it would have been utter crap (I am now looking at you George Lucas), But much as he did in Titanic Cameron has again taken a concept dripping with naivete’ and sentimentality, and sold it to me completely!
The reason this movie works is simple… It’s sincere.
Sincerity is a quality almost completely missing from hollywood these days.
When you see it it blindsides you.

I have watched it in IMAX3D, which really is the way it was intended to be seen.
Most people say that the 3D is actually used sparringly in the movie, but if you compare it with the trailers in HD; _everything_ seems flat, even the parts that had little depth of field to them in the theaters.

Which makes me wonder about one thing. When Avatar eventually makes it on a Blu-ray disc in half a year; will it just be as good ? I have a pretty good home theater set, but lack 3D.
Will it be as flat as the HD trailers are ?
Interestingly enough; the Blu-ray 3D specification has just been finished. A conformable standard to how 3D should be put on a Blu-ray disc so that any player can use it that's firmware upgradable to the spec (the PS3 is confirmed but that's a no brainer since it's a more universal machine than a dedicated blu-ray player) and offcourse we have the 3D vision glasses by nvidia if you use Nvidia GPU's for a modest price - tough they STILL require a 3D -able monitor or HDTV. Yes those things have been coming out in the last few months but who has them ? Certainly not me and not alot of other people.
So .. it will be very interesting to see how Avatar will look like back at home.
All the more reason I'm going to watch it again in IMAX before it fades away from the theaters.

About your question regarding the Blu-Ray copies in the future.

I believe the 3D specs of a movie is in the way the film was taken. Meaning it's not up to the capability of your projector, instead, the DVD will show a film whose visuals can be manipulated by Optical Lenses (hopefully included in the Blu-Ray pack) or Polarizer Lenses.

If possible, go see it without subtitles. In my theater those totally ruined the 3D effect in some scenes. Also I think projectors were lower grade because fast front movement twitched like no tomorrow.

As for the movie, I'd say it's a more of an animation film than "special effect filled" but in scenes were everything worked, it was a true eye candy.

The scenery and the atmosphere of Pandora (the Na'Vi planet) is the best thing any film of such genre could offer. I would be surprised if any upcoming movies can top that aural concept of the story's setting.

The 3D amplified the said "artistry" much more.

Geez... I'm so speechless about this movie... I'd watch it again if given the chance, but it's currently replaced here in the Philippines by local movies (a "tradition" wherein cinemas are showing only local films from December 25 until the year's end).

The best thing is that the 2 hours and 40 minutes eaten by the movie was worth it. Infact, if you guys didn't notice, *SPOILER* the final war between all Na'Vi tribes and the humans only took the final 40 minutes of the movie. It was so good that even though it only took place for 40 minutes, you wouldn't think it went on too fast or could still be extended.

Definitely not a movie to be missed. And for you guys who watched the Flat filming, do watch it again in 3D or IMAX since you'll appreciate the CGI more that way, especially during the slow-mo scenes...

The story of Avatar was very predictable. If you ever watched Dances with Wolves, Last Samurai, etc. then story should be very familiar to you.

HOWEVER, visual and imagination of the Avatar are just top notch. Scenery was so break-taking and just like Danny said above, I had to take off my 3D glasses occasionally as well ^^; Make sure you watch it in 3D and IMAX 3D for the best result!

Unforatunately, its not just the glasses that make it 3D, its the display as well. You'd probably need a display capable of displaying 2 simultaneous images that are polarized differently, which is how most 3D theaters do it, or a display with a high refresh rate (120Hz or above) so you can use it with shutter glasses.

    he he, absolutly loved it!

bit of a story though, went to my local IMAX on a sunday night at 730p and got there 30 min prior. wasn't looking for the best seats but was expecting few.. nearly every seat was filled when we got in.. so after 10 min of looking for seats we found 2 center, and right in front.. so in front that i thought that we wouldn't enjoy the movie.. Boy was i wrong!
The Perfect seats, just laid my head back and enjoyed the hell out of it! and with being so close, when there was explosions etc. the bass of the stereo sent me back in my seat..!

so top notch movie.. pure escapeism! go see it.. imax 3d preferably if you can!

Saw it last weekend in 3D/IMAX.. Cameron's really pushed the tech to render the animation and stereo imaging at this level. Thank you!

Before going I wondered about the 2 hour 40 minute movie length.. until the movie started. The time passed before I knew it.

Am going back for a second viewing this Tuesday.. want to sit in the stereo 'sweet spot' to see if it looks better.

And as for the people who found 2 hours and thirty minutes too long all I'll say is REALLY??? That time went by so fast for me. Just watched it today, what an amazing movie! Not perfect in terms of plot as it was a bit predictable, but the visuals were so stunning! Think this is the first movie where the CGI blend with real live action is just flawless.

A bit unexpected for James Cameron movie but I liked the political undertones too, with its focus on ecological and colonial issues.

What I adored most is how it not only gave gorgeous visuals of this alien world, it fully submerged you into it, every little detail was worked out and your really felt as if you were truly on Pandora.
An amazing movie in that aspect, will probably convince me to get a BluRay player and HD tv once it's out on BluRay.

Caught the regular edition as I can't see 3D movies (my depth perception is just too poor for it).

Avatar is good, but Cameron's best is still Terminator 1 and 2 and Aliens. The gunships in Avatar remind me heavily of the dropship in Aliens, the mecha remind me of the Power Loader at the end of Aliens, and Avatar even has Sigourney Weaver.

It was also hard for me to actually root for the Na'Vi too, seeing as I am a human, and I feel an innate need to root for my own species. The Marine Colonel was also too badass to dislike, even if he was a bastard.

Not much of a movie fan, only go when there's something I really like. Went to Kawasaki to watch Transformers and it was completely crap.

And I wouldn't go to watch Avatar just because of special effects, nowadays they're so common that even if they are ground breaking as they praise themselves, something that should be done by viewers, I wouldn't watch it just because of it. I mean what's the point of some scenery that looks amazingly real if there's nothing interesting happening there.

Saw it and liked it. Not epic, could have been better? I dunno. I just remember I cried when they cut the forest down with the yellow machines. (>_< yellow machines, kek, my English fails me)
Anyway, I like the idea how it shows us our situation nowadays. We humans cut down rain-forests, pollute the air etc. Destroying our home planet.
Thing I didn't like was the typical happy ending and the big fights. Although it was cool but.. hmm? :D We've seen big GaBoom fights so many times already~ But yeah, I understand. Some people wants them so okay okay.

Just watched it in Korea in its glorious 3D version. While the story might seem blah for some, Cameron makes a great job into telling it so it doesn't feel rushed or boring; and let's face it, nowadays all stories have been told, it's how you tell them what's important. The main dish is obviousy the mind-blowing world he created; it's obvious why Cameron waited 10 odd years for the technology to develop (and thank goodness he did).

Would watch again if I had the extra cash!

I don't fancy watching this kind of movie... obviously the selling point is the wonderful arts and graphics... but that doesn't tickle me at all... I prefer the one like Final Fantasy Advent Children kind of graphic but not this one... overall I still prefer the old fashion type of movie, real actor in real life (or studio made "real life") environment... maybe you may say I don't have a taste for arts and indeed I don't really fancy arts... but I do love Japanese anime... but for sure when the pirated DVD for this movie appear in the market (with super cheap price) next time, maybe I don't mind to buy them and just give it a spin since it's cheap anyway... I only buy original DVD for Japanese anime and certain movies that really worth the money.

    Odd jobs

No matter how I think about this movie I can only see the connection between it and Haruhi Suzumiya.. I mean BLUE, AVATARS, ALIENS.. O_O"

I'm mixed now. I haven't seen it and don't know if I want to see it. If it's going to be good then of course, I would. I just don't want to be dissapointed.

I personally saw it twice: first in regular 3D then later in IMAX 3D. A beautiful and stunning movie. The plot was a little on the short side, but it was still a good movie (could have made it longer :p).

Watched the film yesterday on one of the world's largest IMAX screens in the southern hemisphere.

And it was brilliantly fantastic to watch! Definitely worth another watch again (with or without 3D glasses)

    Simply sublime!

    farmer (no, not really)

Watched it on regular 3D on opening day. Thought it was soo amazing, I took my family to watch it on Christmas day on 3D IMAX. They loved it. But the movie kinda lost its luster on the 2nd time around.

I'm travelling at the moment so haven't got the chance to see it >.< but I really want to! Might try and do so while I'm here in San Francisco at their IMAX.
