History of Christmas in Japan

Merry Christmas folks! Or as folks in Japanese would say - "Merri Kurisumasu."
I realize that folks on the West side will have to wait until tomorrow so I will post a very very special giveaway tomorrow as a prezzie for me ^o^

History of Christmas in Japan

Tis just another working day in Japan however as Christmas is not a public holiday. Many gaijin folks take today off and some British run companies close their office for today.

History of Christmas in Japan

Back in the UK I would usually be raiding the fridge and table full of food from Sainsburys or Tescos - munching while watching Home Alone for the 502nd time.

History of Christmas in Japan

Christmas was first introduced to Japan before the Meiji Restoration in 1552 by missionaries. But during the Edo period, the Baukufu suppressed all forms of Christianity so Christmas didn't get off the ground at all.

It wasn't until the Meiji period in 1900 when Christmas was reintroduced to Japan. The food store Meiji-ya opened a store in Ginza and since then the Christmas monetization wars began. Christmas is more of a business event rather than a religious one over here.

History of Christmas in Japan

During the Taisho period, more and more children's publications began to have Christmas themes and in 1925 (Taisho 14), Christmas stickers were given to folks who donated to money to the cause of stamping out Tuberculosis.
Taisho Musume is based in the Taisho period. Only managed to watch a few episodes ToT.

History of Christmas in Japan

Before the war in 1928 during the Showa period, Asahi newspaper wrote how Christmas has become an annual event for the Japanese people. Many shops in Shibuya, Asakusa and Ginza served Christmas dishes and waiters dressed up in festive apparel.

History of Christmas in Japan

In modern day Japan, folks buy presents for each other, put up Christmas decorations and illuminations and eat Chicken.
Been digging around and cant find the reason why but I heard that the reason why the Japanese eat chicken instead of turkey is because turkey is not a common dish over here. The last time I ate turkey was probably 10 years ago back in the UK!

History of Christmas in Japan

And this photo was taken just now at out local shopping arcade - as you can see its just another day.
The amount of people shopping starts to increase from now and reaches a peak by the 31st as folks stock up on food and money for the new year break. Most banks are closed for nearly a week and you cant withdraw money from most of them until the 4th of January.

OK thats enough from me on this subject - need to get back to other work ^^;
Hope you are having a merry Christmas and that you get a load of goodies - what did you get - tell us!
If you didn't get anything then don't be sad - have something really nice for you in tomorrows giveaway.

No mention of "Romantic Kurisimasu?" I would think that would be of very great interest to the folks who hang out here.

Don't really celebrate Christmas for religious reasons either, but always decorate the house, buy presents and have a turkey on the table. ^^;; Though I've been moving the past week, so it's been a rather confusing and hectic month - felt like Christmas really snuck up on me.

    Merry Christmas to all! ^^

Christmas is a public holiday here in Belgium, many companies and people also take half a day or the whole day off on Christmas Eve. There's no real traditional dishes though, it varies.

Alas here too some channels often air the "Home Alone" movies for the... god knows how many times it has been. >_<

Some survey in Lima, said people consider christmas a chance for family meeting instead of all that religious stuff. I concur with that. But also heard (from german teacher, long time ago) that xmas is a time for present(puresento, okurimono ;P) exchange, the more expensive the better, showing off with that. Is it like that in Japan?
What I appreciate about xmas is free time, a national holiday, no work, just me and whatever I have to do. ;) Free time.

Merry Christmas Danny! (I know it's Boxing Day already as I write this, but haven't been able to get on the internets due to all the Christmas dinners I had to attend)

Anyway, Taisho Yakyuu Musume, or as I'd like to call it, Taisho Yuri Musume, is a good and cute decent series to watch.

BTW, your paragraph about "Before the war in 1928..." it should be 1937. Japan didn't enter into any major wars until THAT ONE with China in 1937. (The raid on Pearl Harbor came in 1941, and the skirmishes with China in 1931 was over very quickly) Anyway, I'd better not let this gloomy history darken the mood of this festive period.

    I was little perplexed when I found out Christmas was not a public holiday in Japan. One time, I arrived to Japan on Christmas day and called my friend to come meet me in Shinjuku and he was like 'I can't, I'm working right now' and I was like, 'What!? No way!' ^^;

    みんな、メリクリスマス。
Hey everyone, Merry Christmas. I hope everyone is having a wonderful time with family and friends! I hope people got loads and loads of presents and enjoyed all of them. I didn't get any this year due to the econ. crisis, but maybe next year things will be better, but we got to go to a local charity and help with a toy drive. It was fun to meet little kids who need toy more than we did, I even donated some of my figures, and I saw an anime fanatic kid who bawled for it. I'm glad I did that! Well sorry for rambling, and I hope everyone had an amazing Christmas, and I hope everyone will have an even more amazing New Year.

Didn't get anything from families and friends but I got myself things I wanted so its a win for me as I did not get something I'm not interested in XD

People say its the feelings that count, not the presents - Not too sure about that because in the end the person you gave the stuff to either likes it or not then says that the feelings itself is important then toss the gift you gave them out the window the next day. XD

Even in the Netherlands, the coincidence...Yes, I'm talking about the fact that I saw Home Alone airing for the Nth time on our national channels again. Me and my family prefer some better quality films than Christmas ones.

I do love the classic Christmas music and carols from the sixties though.

Merri Kurismasu Danny Choo! I heard that the whole KFC for Christmas Dinner phenomenon started in the 1970's when KFC launched a commercial campaign stating that their food was the equivalent of an American Family "Traditional Christmas Dinner." Thought it was interesting that the commercials were so successful that now there is competition to get KFC on Christmas! Wasn't a huge fan of KFC when I was living back in the States, but I have to admit, KFC tastes better when I'm craving American food while living overseas.
