Abercrombie & Fitch recently joined the fashion war district in the middle of Ginza by opening their first Japanese outlet last Tuesday.

Wifey and I was in Ginza last Thursday and she wanted to check out the place as shes into the fashion scene. In Japan, folks generally have a habit of being drawn towards queues and just line up - even if they don't know what they are lining up for!

To easily form a long queue, all you have to do is hold up a sign that says "Saikoubi" [最後尾] or "The end of the line is here" - people will automatically start to be sucked towards the end. Here Saikoubi is translated into "Tail End" ^^;

Japan Probe put up the following TV report of the opening.

Didnt take long to get in but once in, my nostril's were assaulted by an extremely strong smell of perfume. Maybe some members of staff didn't know that it was supposed to be sprayed on and instead started to drink bottles of it.

Apparently its part of their marketing strategy or something - people who go in come out smelling of perfume like we did and we automatically become walking adverts.

The place was extremely dark and music was very loud. I think they were trying to replicate some sort of club atmosphere.

This was the only decent shot I could get in the darkness of the type of apparel that they had in store.

Wifey reported back to us on Forever 21 which opened their first store in Harajuku earlier on this year. While in Japan these brand names seem to be hot and gather a load of crowds n buzz, I hear that in the US they are bog standard apparel stores. I'm not too familiar myself so cant really comment.

A few Japanese reports including the one on Japan Probe cover how despite other brands are pricing their current season of clothes at low prices, Abercrombie don't seem competitive enough.

I usually get my clothes from Zara, Comme Ca, Muji and Uniqlo and most of it is black ^^;
What are the popular apparel outlets in your neck of the woods that you recommend?

Here is that perfume - berry smelly and bad for my asthma - had to leave the building first ^^;

The outside of the store looks like this. They made it so that you cant see whats inside - until you go in.

As with the opening day that you saw in the video report above, Abercrombie has a bunch of half naked men showing their oppai at the entrance where you can have photos with them. Is that a Japan thing only?
But apart from good looking men with their oppai hanging out, they also had a load of very cute looking lady shop assistants too - without oppai hanging out. They were so cute that you would automatically look twice against your own will!

Many of the staff seems to be gaijin looking so if you have looks to kill and need a job in Japan then they *may* consider you.

The only reason I have a bunch of A&F clothes is because I used to work there. I used to get discounts for every clothes in the store. I quit because of having issues with bad co workers. Otherwise I wouldn't really buy any clothes from them, unless they have good clearance items.

Stores like AF or American Eagle or Hollister are completely mainstream, so no one really considers them fashionable. They cater to the stereotype of the 18-25 upper middle class "bro." Because of that, most people you see wearing AF/AE/Hollister are in middle school or high school. I don't know much about Japanese fashion, but Uniqulo is much more appreciated than AF/AE/Hollister, at least in terms of denim. To put it simply, very, very few American adults wear AF/AE/Hollister.

May want to clarify on your point regarding American adults. If you're within the age range you cited earlier, you are an adult albeit young. It would be more accurate to say fewer older adults would wear these brands. American Eagle is still worn by many of my co-workers who are in their late 20s.

I suppose it depends on the industry. Most people working in professional settings aren't going to wear destroyed jeans and a long sleeve polo to work...

Unless you work government, it's usually business casual or casual which happens to be the most common form of attire worn those employed in the United States across all work places. Destroyed jeans, I agree you wouldn't see in a work place. Polos and the likes, not surprising.

I work in the medical diagnostics industry, and apart from the business manager who has to keep up appearances and some of the doctors it's usually casual or business casual. Jeans, khakis, pants or anything covering the full length of the legs are a requirement for lab techs for safety issues.

I think these are the reasons:
      1. It's a new fashion store in the country
      2. It's foreign
      3. It has shirtless models hanging out front.

But from the way the report sounds, I don't think they will do very good after awhile.

Agree with all your reasons. A&F,with their high prices in the same area as H&M,ZARA, and FOREVER 21; will not be able to compete for long. The loud music, dim lighting, and strong smell of cologne are all attributes to an A&F store no matter where they are located.

I have yet to enter the Abercrombie and Fitch in London. I hear some interesting stories about the place. The most common is the bare chested (I guess shivering in the winter) men that guard the doors and the good looking female sales assistants that operate within the shop. My first brands for clothing are Zara, Esprit and H&M, and my first choice sportswear brands are Nike and Puma. I guess Danny may remember high street clothing chains such as Topman, River Island and Burtons.

Speaking of bare-chestedness in A&F - my mother would try to cover my eyes as we walked past the Abercrombie store in our local mall when I was a wee young'n... It's kind of hard to avoid though, as the entire entrance to the store is smothered with black-and-white posters of brooding guys wearing naught but too-low trousers. Bleh. x(

Abercrombie and Fitch = giant fail!!!!!!! no joke they're stuff is way overpriced. and actually that stuff that u smelled Danny i dont think is on sale they have a special one for the rooms which they go around spraying every few hours.not one of the best clothing stores here in my opinion. I usually go for H&M, Urban Outfitters, and PacSun better price range and the clothes is nicer.

Lol! The long queue thing is not a japan only thing...
Here in Singapore, the same thing happens...
I remember on local tv, once the local tv network did some kinda research by forming a completely random queue to find out how many people would join it n to see how many people knew what they were queuing up for...
I think it was like 70% of the people had absolutely no idea what they were queuing up for...

well some of the people in line were agents placed for the purpose of gaining as many people as possible..
well its a mindset of many "pure breed" Singaporeans, if there is a queue, whatever it is, its bound to be good...
btw, it doesn't have to be cheap, as long as its good, they will queue...

The clothes are OK, but like greenwolf60 said, you could get the exact same style for less at a different place like "Old Navy". By the way, you still have to wait for the "American Eagle" and "Hollister" name brands to make their debut out there. It's what the majority is wearing here in the States.

And yes.....over here you don't see any people waiting in line to go inside the store. Except on the Friday after "Thanksgiving" which is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November and we call "Black Friday". Stores open at 4 or 5AM and people are offered the Biggest discounts of the year. This officially starts the Holiday Shopping season in the U.S.

Fashion fashion fashion......A&F is something as ppl would describe as the college wear and its target are those ppl.. i've seen a couple of those apparels and am quite pleased with the quality and one thing the are into right now is the wear and tear plus vintage looks.

Opening up in Japan is just something that was inevitable. Personally i'd stick with Japanese brands.... hehehehehhe...it's a lot more exclusive :P

More or less, depends on the concentrations and if you buy 'organic' or 'synthetic' ones. For the most part, it's usually just alcohol and aromatic compounds mixed together (OO)

In comparison, you would be surprised how many mutagens are contained in organic foods. Since they're cultivated without the use of commercial pesticides the plants make better their own more potent and/or in higher concentrations (xx)

    not sure xD

The perfume that they "fragrance" the store with makes me keep away from A&F whenever I walk past one.

I've gone into that store (against my will) something like once or twice but can't stay in there for long - the dark lightning and suffocating atmosphere (literally) gives me a horrible headache.

As for the half-naked men, they're not there all the time, I've only seen them there during holidays or special events when there are a lot of people at the mall.

I have some Ambercrombie & Fitch shirts, but I bought them from another store like TJ Maxx where they cost 1/10 the original price (^^;) There's no official Ambercrombie & Fitch store close by, only Hollister and American Eagle.

I can't stay long in Hollister because of the fragrances they use on the store...too pungent (xx) American Eagle isn't bad but the prices are killer. A couple of dress shirts ran me up to about $45.

Zara is very famous in Portugal and has quite low prices, it belongs to a spanish group called Inditex Group that owns other brands like Pull & Bear,Oysho,Bershka or Massimo Dutti.
Because Spain is the only bordered country with Portugal we have lots of Inditex Group stores and most prices are much lower than in the rest of the world.

Usually A&F is quite affordable. About half of their stuff is pricey, but the other half is quite reasonable. It doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg to dress well if you know where to look.

A&F is pretty expensive for what they sell. Pants that you could get elsewhere for $30-40 are $60. Shirts, sweaters, etc... are pretty expensive compared to other places.

As of late, their designers are really not on top of their game. I don't mind paying for good fashion and quality, but when it is ugly you can't charge a premium price.

The exterior shot of the store looks just like the one on 5th ave in Manhattan! Tho all A&F (and Hollister Co.) shops seem to get the same treatment in design and aesthetic. All A&F stores are dark, loud, maze like, and heavily saturated with the scent of perfume. I think it's their strategy to confound people into making purchases. Generally walk out smelling like the stores as well. The smell amazingly lingers for quite a while especially on any merchandise purchased... Not my fav place to shop at but I have found occasional steals and have to admit some Hollister stuff is super soft.

A&F and Hollister seems to do very well in the states. Hollister Co. is their more affordable and younger line while Abercrombie & Fitch is priced higher. So if you can't afford A&F, Hollister is the place to go. Not too many apparel stores in NY have a queue line just to get in but I have seen A&F to be the exception. In the summer I sometimes walk by to sneak a peak at the guys by the door, lol. Men are topless as well providing the weather is hot enough.

The good looking well toned men that stand around is a A&F thing. The hiring process here in Canada at a A&F store is: you don't look for a job there, they'll go around and pick people they think 'look good'

Speaking of, with all these american chains going over to the Land of the rising sun, we could use a few more japanese retailers over here...in Canada esp.

abercrombie and fitch stores are always like that. the ones i've seen in toronto are also dark and have loud music. Maybe the poor lighting is to hide how tacky their clothes are?

In all honesty, I don't see the appeal of it. It seems that they take run of the mill styles and shirts that are dull, then just stick their name in big letters across it.

But, yeah they what's up with all the American chain stores popping up in Japan?

OH! About the perfume. They have one person who runs around spraying the A&F cologne/perfume in the store...yeah...the people who are hired to work their are model-esque types...you don't see any non-model-esque types.

That's how the Abercrombie store on 5th Ave looks here. Dark, insanely filled with perfume/cologne and loud music. Though, at the entrance there's a shirtless model at the entrance whom you can freely take pictures with or of. Obviously, shirtless model is usually a guy but once a while I see a girl model in front with a wife beater.

I HATE Abercrombie stores with a passion. I find them to be very obnoxious. Just like you mentioned, they are dark and the music is deafeningly loud. I can't peacefully examine the clothes I want to shop for. Can't comment on their quality of clothes since I never bought anything there.

Looks like Singapore is not the only nation that has citizens who join queues without knowing what the queue is for.

I usually get all my clothes from overseas because its cheaper ^^. If I had money though I'd be getting my clothing from General Pants which is a Australian store. They sell mostly street/casual wear which is my type of fashion ^^.

Wow there's one in Tokyo too O.o
The one here in London is always packed and as soon as you get throught the door you're assaulted by topless men dancing around to loud music and loads of screaming girls taking pics with the assistants.
Personally I prefer to go to less crowded shops like Uniqlio and GAP but I try not to waste my money on clothes and instead save it for figures.

Not that anyone asked, but Hollister belongs to A&F. Only difference being Hollister's prices are a bit more reasonable and it's styling is suppose to reflect South California's beach culture. As for American Eagle, they came in later to cash in on the popularity of the style at a much lower price point. At one point I believe there was even a lawsuit between the two companies claiming fashion plagiarism. ~_~

I graduated from all the labels mentioned above the moment I graduated from college. I buy want I think looks good, unique, and are quality made (although not always all of the above, sometimes I settle for 2 out of 3 ^_^; ). Lately though I have been buying a lot at Urban Outfitters, loving some the independent/random labels they carry.

LOL we're the same! Everytime I buy clothes, they're almost always black. I do, however, prefer if it had a military theme to it but I can't seem to find any good ones here. As for Abercrombie, I don't really like the style of their clothes. Like I said, all I buy is either black shirts, anything with a military or anime theme.

I consider myself to be average looking. I've noticed a few girls steal a look from me from time to time although I'm not sure if it's because they're attracted to me or they noticed me stealing a look from them! I usually go for the latter though~

A&F and Hollister both have the no lights except on clothes only with loud music. They're just catering to the younger demographics, since that is where they make their money. I know of several A&F where I live, and everytime I walk in one, there's never anything I want, so I walk out after strolling in lol. They're other retail stores that offer similar clothing for much less.

lol good to know that A&Fs are exactly the same internationally.
The headquarters of abercrambie is here in Columbus. I have to keep a 3 foot distance from the stores because that smell is so strong and makes me ill. I can't help but bust a move out side every time I pass tho w/ that crazy loud dance music.
This is perfect for Japan, all A&Fs clothes are so teeney tiny!! [the girls stuff anyway]

This is somewhat surprising because A&F has been accused of being discriminatory against non-White people back here in the states... I think a while back a girl (who was either Southeast Asian or Asian) sued A&F because they refused to hire her based on her ethnicity. Not to mention A&F has also made racist T-shirts that said "Two Wongs Can't Make A White" and another logo that said "Wong Laundry Services." Obviously, as an Asian American I am conflicted about A&F in general. D:

But like you said though, A&F has refused to lower their prices during this recession and thus their profits are in the toilet. Nothing surprising though, considering their overpriced conventional clothing which never changes, save for a few logos and satin trims. I can never shop there though because of their intoxicating scent in the store, and the fact that it's so dark, I can't even see what I'm buying.

But the Japanese love American stuff! You can bet they'll eat it up like candy.

BleH. I wouldn't wanna go there. What the hell are those girls getting excited for getting a pic with some random half naked guys? I'm a girl too but I'd say No thanks.
And the perfume thing seems ridiculous.
Sorry >-< Actually I don't like to buy clothes, it's quite boring and I always get headaches at cloth stores.
Here H&M doesn't have a good reputation but many still go there xD It's cheap and the clothes looks okay. I think Zara is okay.
Lately people go to UFF which is a hmm.. a flea market for clothes? Yea.. I try to go there more often. Easy place for getting cheap shirts..
Oh and here we HATE waiting in lines.. :P or at least we avoid them?

they do have some pretty nice stuff, but then again if i'd shop there regularly i'd be broke. i walked in one time and saw a long sleeve shirt for 70 real dollars, and thought that i could buy at least 4 or more t shirts from some place like pac-sun for the same price....(for those of you who know what pac-sun is). for 70 dollars spend it on something better...like children's trading cards(yugioh abridged anyone?)

A&F is a brand that tries very hard to be the snobbish, turn their nose up at the "ugly" people type, and thinking that it is the coolest thing in town, when it is not.
It tries to be the representation of jock and the cheerleader types in your typical American high school. If you have ever watched any American teen movies the likes of mean girl, bring it on 1 2 3 4 5, etc, you'll get the drift.
They are being make fun of in satire on TV. There has been report that the store only hire "good looking" young men and women, and was told to be rude and unhelpful to customer to play up its snobbish image.
If you think you are average, then you will probably not welcome to work there, and get less customer service.
I know there was some complaints when it decided to open a shop in Savor Row in London, in the US, it is really an average brand, in term of the design and the quality of their product, in fact its common t-shirt design is downright uncomfortable, with the protruding brand name at your chase level.
Anyway, now you know I don't like this brand, because its trying to be something its not, and its quality in product design, store layout, customer service suck big time!
Sad to see how people can be so blind to be so called "trendy" and "fashionable".

I have to say, I'm into my Abercrombie & Fitch clothing. Most of my friends know me for that, then again Apple Geek too. Guess its handy when you have friends whom work at A&F London, whilst another is actually a designer for them too.

After all it's casual wear, if you have what it takes...
