Japan Reference has an ancient poll on "What is/are Japan's greatest contribution to the world ?"
Thought it would be interesting to read each others list. As for my list, in no particular order:-

-Dollfies (Mini daughters - very cute n adorable)
-Anime (What is it about anime that makes it cool? Difficult to express at times ^^;)
-Japanese Games (It was Japanese games that got me into Japanese culture and to study the language)
-Manga (Manga - entertaining and learned a load of Japanese though it)
-2D Girls (Personally love the Japanese style of illustrating 2D girls)
-Figures (Good Smile, Max Factory, Megahouse in particular)
-Sushi (Tastes better with hot Japanese green tea)
-Eroge (Dont play them but the girls are gorgeous)
-Dakimakura (Art tapestries)
-Oppai Mousepads (Health care for the wrists)
-Electronics (In particular the camera's)

There are many more aspects of Japanese culture that I enjoy but just thinking about the stuff that has made its way around the world. What in your mind are Japan's greatest contributions to the world and why?

Photo of Dollfie Nanoha this morning - one of the greatest contributions to mankind in my mind ^^;

And here is that poll at Japan Reference.

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

This item was posted in the Japan category. You can see more of everything else or subscribe via RSS instead.

      So true! Even if it's taken to extremes (from a Western, English-speaking mindset, at least), there's always that sense of thinking about how your actions might be affecting others.

    Hentai!!!!

    ok being serious now: would probably be their great story telling which falls into the genres of anime, games, manga, VNL and the like. Prefers their illustrations over western illustrations any day. Of course everything you, Danny, listed I agree to as well, I just don't think it matters if I prefer which over the other as they are all great and equal in my opinion.

    I would say, in a very general sense, art and electronics. In art, everything from the old Japanese motif (edo period specifically)to the modern flavors of Tokyo (Think: Futuristic, modern). In electronics... optics is a big one, but they were huge innovators of computers, radio, and audio (a certain record player).

      I saw the sword museum in Tokyo, and even though I couldn't read a word on any of the signs there it was still awesome. I was impressed to see how well kept these swords were, some of them where several hundred years old.

        katana have so much history in them and the amount of work that goes into these katana are just crazy! =) might end up being a katana collector in the future.. can't really explain in words why I love katana but heck, you can't really explain these kind of things with words in the first place! The good:
    * Chambara (Samurai movies)
    * Film directors like Kurosawa and Ozu, who helped rebuild live-action Japanese cinema
    * Manga (Domo arigatou gozaiimasu, Tezuka-sensei)
    * Anime (Domo arigatou gozaiimasu, Tezuka-sensei)
    * The modern animation workflow used by most animation producers worldwide, which was created by Hanna-Barbera and Toei Douga in the late 1950s for TV animation
    * Compact video systems like Beta, VHS, DVD, miniDV, P2, and AVCHD on SD
    * Quality cameras like Canon, Nikon and Pentax (my trusty film SLR was a Pentax)
    * The relatively cheap, easy and small Digital Camera you can take anywhere
    * Zen Dharma and its influence on the Beat Generation
    * Japanese aesthetics
    * The IBM ThinkPad computer which, for its run at IBM, was designed at IBM Japan
    * Home gaming systems, from the Nintendo Famicom on down
    * Asian Ball Joint Dolls/Asian Vinyl Armature Dolls/super-jointed action figures
    * Japanese food!!!
    * "Superflat" art movement

    The bad:
    * "Torture Porn" horror movies
    * Upskirt photos/video
    * Sarariman culture and Karoshi
    * Moe and the sexualization of pre-pubescent girls
    * The Japanese unwillingness to look at their pervasive gender relations problems and their consequences (low birth rate, hikikkomori, "parasite singles")
    * The Japanese unwillingness to look at the flaws in their economic system which has kept their economy in the doldrums -- we here in the US are right behind the Japanese on this score and are likely to have a "Lost Decade" or two of our own.
    * Sexism in Japanese culture

    In particular order ^_^
    1) Cinema: Especially Yasujiro OZU and Akira Kurosawa. The directors create the cinema of a country and a lot of good japanese directors contributed in the creation of what we call today "Japanese Cinema". Tokyo Story of Ozu, Seven Samurai of Kurosawa, great masterpieces...
    2) Culture: Japanese culture always influences people around the world, from its foods to the notion of respect (including seppuku or hara-kiri), from geishas to samurai...
    3) Anime: The japanese "cartoons" showed the whole world what is and what should be a good animated film or series. The japanese anime, all by itself, showed the whole world that cartoons aren't just for the kids, that it shouldn't be just for the kids. And japanese anime directors made every "regular" anime director say "why did I limit myself in a world made of drawings!" Japanese animation has always been and will always be revolutionary.
    4) Figures: I collected Spawn figures, Alien figures, etc. etc. But when I saw anime figures/statues/action figures from japanese sculptors, I was shocked. And the Dollfies! What a beautiful and huge contribution to the figure/statue industry! Japanese figures say to the whole world: This is how to sculpt and paint a figure! I think they certainly brought a new look, a new dimension to the notion of figure.
    5) Manga: Until the mass production of the japanese manga, cartoons were for "the ones who couldn't read regular books". But when the manga began to show itself to the fans around the world, the genre of cartoons gained some respect, all thanks to manga. And I think manga is far better than a lot of junk cartoons on the market. There are some good ones of course, but they are very few. The drawings and especially the topics are beyond imagination.
    6) Technology: Do I have to explain anything? ^_^ Japanese technology is always on top. An example: While in european or american tech commercials we see animation robots, in a japanese tech commercial, we see a real robot walking down the stairs! :D

    I don't want to sound like a cheese factor of 10 but,
    Japans' greatest contribution to the world is simply being Japan. It's all encompassing to me.
    The people, art, language, music, philosophy, FOOD^^, architecture, inventiveness, just everything, too much to list. Also I like the way it seems they encourage to bring to life your dreams without brow beating or scorning you, or it's to say to try and see where it goes, instead of over calculating an idea until it's dead on the table without even trying it in the real world. Which I guess leads to taking bigger risks to try and reach further.....yes that's it.^^

    The correct answer, of course, is Godzilla.

    Seriously though, although it was videogames and anime that first got me interested in Japan, there really are so many aspects of Japanese culture, history, and life beyond popular culture that fascinate me and I think are important contributions to the world.

    Japan's greatest contributions?

    Technology (rice cooker, CD-rom, cameras, etc.)
    Japanese food (people from all over the world can recognise Japanese food)
    Culture (Japan has so many preserved historical sites)
    Anime and manga
    Instant noodles! lol

    "-Anime (What is it about anime that makes it cool? Difficult to express at times ^^;)"

    I do believe what makes anime so cool, is the fact that the emotions you can express with it is amazing and easy. I draw quite a bit myself ... well, used to anyways, until life kind of ... took priority haha. Well, anyways, I used to draw a lot, and I drew anime/manga because I love how easy it was to create an awesome picture. Combine that with knowledge of dynamic angles, and you've got some pretty sick stuff.

    But I honestly believe the greatest thing Japan has contributed to the world (which I toooootally want myself) is the kotatsu. Hands down, best thing ever made <3

    ... And I guess Clannad. Haha~
