A Week in Tokyo 48

Its been about 3 weeks since we got back to Tokyo. This post covers a few days running up to the Singapore trip and the past few weeks.
Tis been a load of fun for the latter half of this year with so much progress on building the brand and business. Our 2010 schedule already looks packed until March.

Starting off with a day at Shinjuku. This place always brings back memories of our first honeymoon in Tokyo. Will be our 13th wedding anniversary in a few days ^o^

Zooming back in time to pre-Singapore trip. Wifey wanted to take this pic of me trying to do an impression of puchi Kyoka.
The T-shirt was given to me by CNN after the broadcast last year.

Crossing over to Singapore. Didn't do much traveling abroad this year and completely failed to make our Canada trip. Will make sure we do more flying next year. One things we want to see in Canada are the Aurora lights. Anybody here seen them? Where do we go and what season?

A week later and we are back in Tokyo. Didn't spend enough time in Singapore but looks like I will be back there in February. That reminds me that I need to sort out a venue for Singapore CGM Night.

I've not been feeling well - the schedule started to take a toll on the body while I was in Singapore. Still not feeling 100%
Doctor said I had done in my throat which was affecting my whole body. He stuck a camera down my throat through my nose! T'was an interesting experience.

He tried to give me as much medicine as possible like all doctors do because they get a commission on how much medicine they give out. I told him I didn't need any pain killers so managed to cut down the prescription by one set of pills. As soon as you mention "slight pain or discomfort" then they will try to give you a painkiller - if you don't need it then say so! "Iranai" [いらない] is what you say when you don't want something.

What are doctors like in your neck of the woods? Do they also try to prescribe to you a whole cabinet full O pills?
The bottle Nanoha is holding was some antibiotics which last a week on one gulp.

A Week in Tokyo 48

Installed a second optic fiber Internet connection at the beginning of the year - you can see what the installation process was like in the Japan Optic Fiber Internet article.

Learned a lot about hosting from the office - how to set up the routers and how to serve many sites from one IP address with requests being dealt with a single Mac Mini.

We pay about 5,000 yen per month for an unlimited bandwidth 1GB connection making hosting very cheap indeed. But the time needed to maintain the systems ends up costing much more.
We decided to let SliceHost do our cloud hosting instead. We are currently running dannychoo.com, figure.fm, otaku.fm, goodsmile mobile and cospasea on Slicehost.

Folks in Japan generally like to wear what everybody else is wearing. If something too radical comes out (fashion, goods) then nobody will use it because they will stand out too much - until somebody on TV uses it and then everybody will think its normal.

Do you get good electronics deals like this where you are or do they slap you in the face with a wet dog offering you 1 cent on every 100 USD you spend?

I've lived in Canada for around 8 years and I'm pretty sure you have to be up around Yellowknife in the North West Territories to see them regularly, but then again, I've seen them down in Thunder Bay as well. I highly suggest you go in the winter and that you prepare yourself for extremely cold temperatures.

indeed. Danny, if you want to see the aurora lights, you need to be here in Canada in the winter which is probably the best time to see them.

also the best place is in the more remote regions of Canada up north. although you can see them sometimes further down south in the country, the best experience is seen up north. but unfortunately, it is really cold there in the winter and traveling there is not as easy

I've seen aurora here in Helsinki a few times. But we have so much light here that it's quite difficult to see them. That's because many people travel to northern parts of the country in order the see them.

Concerning the Stormtrooper armor, i just remembered this, but did you forget to pack the black neck collar that you used to wear in Tokyo? I noticed that your neck was fully uncovered in the SG Dance video.

Food looks awesome and especially the soups now that i happen to be ill.

As for docs from my neck of the woods, they don't really oversubscribe meds but they sure do overcharge the visit fee. Or is 13,100 Yen a good price for a visit? ToT

Maybe a silly question but do you ever get nervous when you take a picture aimed towards a stranger (or sometimes of the stranger)? It took me a while before I got somewhat comfortable but even still I kind of play it off by pretending I was still composing the shot after they walk by =D

Hope you didn't feel too bad. When I was sick at one point I was getting 2g a day through injection.

Seeing that fiber line reminds me how bad Germany is in case of the broadband development... all they do is complain that it is to expensive.
Now a few towns get the special treatment but it will prolly be another 10 years or more till you can have fiber lines everywhere here.

Shinjuku... ahh memories... =.= nice pics and to be on that school must really be nice. ^^; I wanna be 15 again~~

With the recession and shopping down I guess more and more places all around the world feel obligated to entice people to spend. Starting with governments handing money to citizens (I even heard they did this in Japan too) and with shops giving big discounts, cashback and stuff.
I always thought US was kind of a king on this, where in other places you just go to shops and bargain to get your best price (or in some places you just pay what asked and be happy nobody asked you to pay more than sticker price), in US you have a twisty maze of credit cards and websites offering cashback, websites distributing coupons for discounts and stuff topped with bargaining in stores for just about everything (which I found very surprising after moving to US), price-matching, special sales events, tax holidays, rebates, special promotions (like sign up for this card and get $300 credit at Sony webshop, or spend $80 at Walmart on American Express in December and get $20 back) and all sort of other confusing stuff.
Microsoft entered this business last year at about this same time + a month or so hoping to cash in on struggling people and started to give huge incentives if you buy stuff by searching for in on their search engine (35% cashback on ebay purchases! That was a sweet time! Too bad the best they did this season is measly 20% cashback with measly $200 limit per purchase).

In all honestly I would say that I would prefer if shops just charged the lowest possible amount and I would not be forced to jump through all the hoops.
But I guess it only makes sense for them to make it complicated. Unaware people just pay higher prices subsidizing even lower prices for sophisticated shoppers (and those who feels the time spent doing this is justified by the end result).

/me looks into the records - sigh, only saved around $2200 in rebates and cashback and other such stuff this year.

I guess I'd provide a specific example to outline how ridiculous it might be at times.
About a month ago Staple (US retailer of office goods) was having a promo event where if you buy a camera that cost more than $150 by manufacturer's suggestion, you get $50 off via a "rebate".
So I purchased Canon A1100IS that was costing $145.99, but there was a discount of $16 on it for that week, I also purchased a "$25 off purchase of $100 or more" from a specialized coupon dealer, so my total price to pay was 145.99-16-25=104.99 + sales tax of 9.25 = 114.7
I made the purchase on Bank of America credit card that had a promotion at the time that if you buy anything at staples, you get 5% off as a statement credit later on (=$5.74 discount).
Then I sent in required documentation to Staples rebate program to get the $50 rebate (received yesterday).
Also it turns out starting from Oct 22 to end of 2009 Canon is having a special promotion where if you have a previously purchased and registered canon camera and buy another camera, you can submit another rebate form to Canon this time for an extra $20 to $50 off (depending on what camera you buy, this one is qualified to $20 only).
So this brings my total to $114.7-$5.74-$50-$20=$38.96 for a camera that was supposed to cost around $130..$140 for a normal non-sophisticated purchase.

Nice. Always gets me even more motivated with my language studies reading these articles.

As for the aurora in Canada. I don't live there but since we have Aurora's every now and then in the winter here and this is on the same latitude as Yellowknife in Canada. I'd say Yellowknife is a good bet. ^^ I don't think that much of the Auroras though... Unless it's a really huge display, which is pretty darn rare.

All these pictures makes me yearn for my first trip to Tokyo in May though. Can't wait.

Thanks for the lovely pictures again Danny. Enjoy them immensely!

Doctors here don't try to prescribe as many pills as they can. In fact most doctors I've been to try and give me tons of free samples instead of buying the medicine so it will save me money XD
As for painkillers, I can't take anything higher than ibuprofen. All the major painkillers like morphine, codeine, etc I am allergic too! So yes they kill pain but they also kill me! lol

We generally get slapped in the face with a wet dog here. I've found very few stores that actually care about their customers anymore. Most will treat customers like crap around here, especially walmart and bestbuy.

The guy in the BMW picture is so looking at her butt.

    Hope you'll feel better soon too. Doctors over here are actually the opposite of Japanese docs....Only if you come crawling in with your spleen hanging out they may suggest you to take some time out; otherwise they just say 'it will pass'. More and more people tend to diagnose themselves on the smaller ailments and try to get a prescription directly ^^;

happy anniversary! Antibiotics for a week in a gulp? here you have to take them 3x a day in pill form between 3 to 7 days (worked in a pharmacy) TOT I try to stay away from pain killers too, not good for the liver. however due to large prescription drug abuse in the US not many docs are willing to just give anyways. Week in Tokyo articles are always interesting. All the colours, interesting merchandise, and food... :D

As for northern lights... You'd really have to go far north to the territories for a guaranteed view. I've only gone north(ern... Didn't go completely to territories) in the summer, so haven't seen them (Fall/winter are the seasons). Catch a flight to Yellowknife (Unless you want to drive from south, which is a whole other experience ^^;;)

Puchi Kyoka's ahoge may be repairable if you pin it with something to reinforcing, like a nail or a piece of wire, in addition to gluing. My grandfather used to do that to my Breyer horses when their legs broke, and it worked a charm. Even after the glue wore down and stopped working, their legs stayed in place. Granted, they pivoted around the reinforcing nail in a slightly disturbing manner, but they stayed!

Butler cafe sounds awesome, actually. Bonus points if they manage to act in character archetypes a la Ouran.

image 84599 - ...the menu in Yoshinoya Philippines is CLEARLY different from what you guys in Tokyo get. What's the bowl next to Kyoka? I assume it's a specific donburi; the Gyudon or other bowls of rice served here don't look like that....

5,000 Yen for 1 GB? Damn! We pay $145 USD for digital cable with Showtime/TMC and 10/1 MBit cable modem. I really wish the governmnet would get off it's ass and do what Japan did, force the telcos and cable companies to get high-speed out to everyone and cheap.

Awesome, a new Week in Tokyo, my favourite part of dannychoo.com! d(^.^)b

Danny, just want to let you know that you may have difficulties in seeing the northern lights here. I lived in a suburb city of Ottawa (called Kanata; almost no light pollution whatsoever) for 7 years; during my almost daily night-time strolls in the surrounding forests and meadows, I only saw them 3 or 4 times. I've been living in Toronto for 5 years now and I haven't seen them at all. You'd have to go far north in the winter and hope you're lucky ^^

I've been lurking for a while but registered last week for the Otacool contest. Danny, you are one of my role models and a testament to the power of determination, keep being awesome! :D

Your internet prices are dirt cheap! I used to pay 30USD for 3.0 Mbps, but due to being 3 miles away from the company, only got 1.5 Mbps out of it. Heck, even with cable now, it's 50 USD for 8 Mbps. There isn't enough competition for lower prices in my neck of the woods. Gotta settle for whatever is in my area.

Favorite drink in Japan-Real Gold! As for the docs, when I was teaching I went a few times. They didn't give me that many pills but I was in Osaka so it might be different down there....You should try to eat less. Japanese food has a lot of additives in it that can make you sick so be careful and eat more veggies and fruits. Also drink more water!

I have a question, related to daily life in Tokyo. Danny maybe some others can answer.
The story goes, like this. My cousin went over to Tokyo recently to study and wanted to try out the Pachinko machines. Because he's seen it and wanted to try a new experience. Then his Japanese friend said, oh no you can't or should not go. None of his friends would take him, saying its full of gangsters and bad people. Just wondering if it is really that bad to just try a bit. I've known other people that went and they never said anything bad about the experience, but they were foreigners though.

What is up with those crazy pizza toppings?!

the Tokyo Mode Gakuen building looks so sweet. The artist from the first part of that commercial has to be "Rockin Jelly Bean" which just makes me more psyched about finding out more about Tokyo Mode Gakuen.

Thanks so much for sharing, as always.
