The AFA coverage continues and thought it would be a good opportunity to make this the post that I point folks to regarding everything Otacool.
For folks who are not familiar with the term, "Otacool" is a compound word made up from "Otaku" and "Cool."

A few moons ago, I asked readers at dannychoo.com to submit photos of their room which got picked up by an absolute ton of Japanese blogs and news sites who were interested in how otaku overseas had stylish rooms filled with anime goodies.

While at dinner with Kotobukiya one evening, they asked whether they could use the content to publish a book. I thought it was a great idea but I didn't have permission from the folks who originally submitted their photos so I asked them to resubmit their photos over at Figure.fm. Figure.fm was already on the Mirai Gaia platform which was geared towards CGM (Consumer Generated Media) - original images were stored on the server which was necessary for print.

A few months later and Otacool was one of the best selling books in Japan and made it up to the 75th best selling book on Amazon Japan.
Being the first of its kind to bring CGM content from around the world and published as a book, Otacool gained much media coverage including TV in Japan.

I'm proud to be part of such an awesome community where Japanese pop culture has brought people from all over the world together. It was great meeting a load of readers in Singapore for example and realizing that they all met through dannychoo.com.

Starting off with some Otacool coverage from the AFA09 where I had my own dannychoo.com booth which was split into the Tokyo Figure Show (Singapore Edition) and Otacool.

I had stats which show that 5% of traffic is from Singapore but was overwhelmed at how many of that 5% came to AFA ^^;
Thanks to all those who came along and see you soon prolly before April 2010 for Singapore CGM Night. I think I'm due to be giving some talks at universities around Singapore too.

Otacool was published in both Japanese and Engrish and was released worldwide.
Otacool sold so many copies that Otacool 2 is in the works. The concept about Otacool is how cool otaku are and showcases their lifestyles which can be rooms, collections or hobbies like cosplay. What do you think Otacool 2 should be?

Otacool 2 should showcase...

Not everybody who was featured in the book got a free copy of Otacool - this was the publishers decision (Kotobukiya) and not mine.
However, I still think its a great achievement to be featured in a top selling book by an established figure maker and have themselves and website profiled. Not even advertisers could buy space in the book.

Interestingly enough that the people complaining about this were folks who didn't participate in the Otacool project at all.

Ah, nearly forgot to mention - Kotobukiya chose all the rooms that were featured and based their decisions on how users integrated their hobby into the interior rather than just having goods dumped in a corner.

Through member participation, we get to learn who are experts on the otaku field in their region. Most knowledgeable folks will be contacted in the future to work on bigger projects.

Interesting to see some of those AFA shots like the one from your and Alodia's point of view at the booth, what a mass of people! Same with the signing at the Kotobukiya store, there's a whole legion of people snapping photos. 0_0

Well with things like Otacool you just can't please everybody sadly.

Could be a nice idea to see the next Otacool book feature a different aspect of the otaku realm like conventions, cosplay, figure collections, Dollfie, games... might be a nice idea to have a theme per book to allow greater diversity.

What I find interesting about this Otacool book is it allows you to see other people's collections, room decorations and gather ideas from there for your own interior.

Considering that Alodia has been named one of the most influential women in the Philippines, the crowds at the book signing would be phenomenal. ;)

whoa, thanks again for everything. kinda surprised when i scrolled down to see myself again.

Otacool 1 was a great success cos it featured something no other book out there had, the ROOMS or to be more specific, the rooms FROM AROUND THE WORLD. That filled a niche. For Otacool 2, you gotta find another niche. something that no other book or magazine out there is showcasing right now.

Cosplay? not sure bout that cos i remember seeing other books and mags on that topic.

More rooms? maybe, maybe not. Cos there'll be that been there, done that kinda situation.

Otaku districts in different countries? might work but it could look like a travel book. u might need the one, same writer for all the countries to make sure there's some kinda system. Different writers might get messy and u would need to get facts checked etc.

Collections? sounds like the best bet. Visually it would look pretty good. Might be a bit similar to Otacool 1.

Photo reports on events? An entire book on that? maybe not.

    Hope that helps! ☆ぁんが㌧(★>U<*)b

Anyway, I voted for "Collections (dolls, figures, gadgets etc)". But what I would really love to read and see in the next book (aside from collections) would be voices of the various otaku, why and how they got interested in Japan, what their favorite places and experiences are and so on ^^ That would be cool.

Because as much as beeing an otaku, I also love Japanese culture, the country itself and quite everything in it.

I ordered my book from J-list at the beginning of the month. They e-mailed that it shipped on the 5th. As I did the cheapest shipping, it still hasn't arrived. (hopefully this week. Must be a slow boat. Hope it's a nice one. :)

I must admit, I'm sort of curious to know what the Japanese readers thought of all of us in the book.
I'm still just gob-smacked that I'm in the book. Been working on the room since. Will post an update once I'm happy with it.
Alodia and Ashley sure do look kawaii as your mascots. :)

Figures, the day after I post this, the book shows up at work. <boingy boingy!> I just noticed though, that there are spurious "n"s inserted in the text in the book and on my Otacool post. (I'll send an e-mail about it later)

Whoa! There's some nice rooms in there. :)

Oh so this is why I'm getting a few visits coming from the Giveaway Winner post XD

Truth be told, I'm still embarrassed about showing my room in the first place. I'm somewhat glad that my room wasn't featured in a big two page layout, but in a little bit disappointed as well. But mostly glad... people should not be exposed to that mess ^^;;; Funny enough a lot of my friends don't know what my room look like, yet a lot of you do, LOL!

As for Otacool 2... I didn't vote for any. I can't really picture what should be featured next. A little bit of everything?

Love the booklet (err won't call it a magazine), I didn't buy it as sorry to say the size was...small...I thought it was going to be as big as those Artwork magazines I usually get but never the less I read all the contents inside. Congrats to all those who made it inside + those at AFA09 who bought it and got Danny & Alodia to sign em.

Anyways A friend of mine wants to give it as a gift to me (opened product smart bastard) after I move into my newly bought apartment next year (weee no more renting (again) and finally my 3rd property purchase after years of savings).

Hope to see Otacool 2 real soon.
