An article by Liz Ohanesian in the LA Weekly covers Dollfie Dreams and Gurren Lagann Yoko. The article even made it to the top page of digg.com spreading the knowledge of Dollfies to more of the Internet population.

Dollfie Dreams have been around for years and yet I only came into the knowledge of their existence through a Wonder Festival I think it was. I thought they were lovely when I first saw them in person but then was completely puzzled by the prices - 60,000 yen?!

I remember that there was a time where I thought figma joints looked odd until I actually picked one up and started to fidget about with them. I also remember a time when the only thing I would see when I looked at a doll were the joints ^^;

But once you actually own and start to pose a Dollfie, you start to appreciate how lovely they are and the joints become part of their beauty - I guess I'm an oya baka ^^;
Saw a CGM post on Dollfie Saber which looked gorgeous. Then started to look at more Dollfie photos and could not take it anymore - I needed to have one! ^^;;;;
Since I adopted and started to post more and more photos, I notice many DC readers and Japanese comrade bloggers starting to adopt too.

The one thing about Dollfies is that they cost 3 limbs and a pancreas. And even if one didn't mind sparing these body parts, many of the Dollfies are lottery based meaning that even if you had the moolah, you may not necessarily get one.
If the hurdle and cost was much lower to adopt a Dollfie (say 100 USD) would you get one?
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.
If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.
Alternatively, you may want to read more about the site.
If you are a regular reader then this message will probably annoy you each time - hide it forever.

Also, she looks lovely in the cardigan. Low-cut is low, its not a pretty sight seeing a butt cleavage due to low clothes. Maybe thats just me....xDDD

You're getting your Obitsus in the wrong place. http://www.junkyspot.com/ . You can get away with a 1/6 scale for a lot less there. Same with Bobobie tinies and Bobobie 27cm BJDs. Also, you might want to consider Dollfie Plus through Volks USA...similarly decent prices. http://www.volksusa.com/ .

Ah I own one dollfie, but it's like after you buy one you want to buy another...
but then realize the huge cost you just spent on the first. That and if you don't sew and just buy the clothes, it's also an invetmsent...since the clothes are also expensive as well.
Although if they were around just 100 USD...that would be tempting.

The Dollfie looks so real, even the hair looks real, man it looks beautiful...
Over the internet, i also saw people hype stuff about Blythe Dolls? Heard those kinda dolls are kinda expensive too, but then the design of the doll doesn't very much appeal to me, where the Dollfie's are just pure kawaii lol...
If it's 100 USD a piece, i'll surely get one... =)

Thanks to you Danny, majority of my income is now almost entirely devoted to Dollfie Dream >.>;
I always love large scale figures so it's natural for me to lean towards Dollfie Dream. I was hesitant at first on the price tag but if I am buying something that requires certain level of craftsmanship, I expect near perfection on every purchase. Lowering the price may sounds good at first but if that means compromising on superb quality then it's a no for me.

Some DD are not on lottery, Yoko/Nia were not, the new White Album pair are not either. Yoko and Nia are now sold below their MSRP in YJA because they were widely available.
I do support increasing the quota on the lottery and making it so that everyone who wanted to buy one can have a chance to do so, thus eliminating that speculator market.

I agree with this, the chance of more people being able to take part in the lottery's would amazing. I just wish more of the products volks provides would be available to the usa. It is hard to find some of the things that show up on DC. :)

In between the USA lottery and the After Event lottery, I can almost manage to get most of what I wanted. Though, the 3rd party market is still largely inaccessible to majority of the folks outside of Asia.
I see in the white album page that they specifically mentioned oversea customer, looks like they do care about that after all. I just wish they increase the dolpa lottery quantity a bit and let most people who wanted one to be able to get one.

I've been fascinated with the Dollfie Dreams for a while now. Yoko, in particular, caught my interest with her striking yet soft and adorable features and lovely red hair. Should I ever build up the funds to purchase her, I'd probably go for a more conservative look via Azone clothing, but there's definitely a lot of charm in her original attire too.
So basically... yes! If not Yoko, then another of the sweet girls in the Dollfie Dream collection.

If dollfies were really 100 USD I would definitely buy them.
I originally didn't care much about them as I thought dolls in it self was scary due to all those old classic doll horror movies I saw as a kid.
But I soon later came to realize that dollfies loves and protects their father, if the dolls in those horror movies were to exist and I happen to be in the same situation my daughter would save me with her magical changing powers XD

Exploring worlds and ways of thought
Honestly I had no clue about Dollfies until I came here. I would click on the links and posts out of curiosity. I became interested in how the parents of Dollfies would dress them. Dresses, accessories, wigs, pantsu, hats, jackets, little tiny boots and shoes, etc.
Then I really took interest when a DC member made a short story with their Dollfie.
I love all the outfits that I have seen. From the simple, to the extravagant. And can vicariously enjoy the happiness they bring their parents who dote on them.
And I would like to thank everyone for sharing, who has posted their dollfies. And those
who will in the future.
You all know who you are.^^
I do plan on adopting, but her head and wig will have to be made custom by my hands.

Actually if a person doesn't buy one of the limited dolls they are not as expensive as you post here. I bought a body and a head back when Volks didn't have a store outside of Japan and created my own unique doll. For much less than the $600 you quote here a person can own one of these dolls.
I don't think people see what all goes into these dolls. It's not a solid piece but a frame with an outer covering. Not only does this give a little more realism but allows them to be modified internally without showing it on the outside. In fact, there has been at least one Dollfie Dream robot. So not only is a person paying for a very uniquely designed doll but for the ability to change and create one how they want it. I do not thing anyone could make these dolls for $100 or $200, the materials and labor alone would cost more than that.
I actually decided to change mine again, and once I am done moving will be turning her into Hard Rock Shooter. I've all the parts, just have to do the work now. So this will be my second creation. I've actually done 1/12 scaled dolls and larger ball jointed dolls but I think this one is one I am really enjoying doing.

I got my first Dollfie Dream in late 2005, and I have to say the Volks limited DD characters were not popular in north america at all back then. I think they were only mostly popular in Japan and with a few "odd people" like me. I only met a handful of people online that was into them. And even most of these people were ball jointed doll collectors who would just get the DD body to attach a resin head on it, as they liked he body but did not like the vinyl DD heads. U_U
I noticed a HUGE difference in popularity after Danny started posting photos of Aoi and Saber last year. Talk about major influence. I actually jointed DC out of curiosity around that time then ( I did not know DC before that hehe). In one year the online DD community on DC and flickr has BOOMED like crazy. For example the Flickr DD group went from 20-ish members last year to 155 today!! I guess its a good thing, even if I lost my lottery entry at Volks usa for the first time last month (they must be too popular now lol) ^^"
Looks like with the new growing popularity we can expect more and more beautiful dolls releases and I'm very happy about that.

I actually own a SD (super dollfie), which as everyone knows is the more "realistic" styled ones with different joints and such, but I am saving for a dream dollfie now that I have a character I want to make. At first I thought they were creepy til I started reading Danny Choo, looking at the details and the options I have since bought my SD, and now I'm saving up for a DD :) and will post pictures of both when I get the other.
The prices of any 60cm+ doll seems unreasonable until you see one in person or get the opportunity to hold one, then you start saving like mad ^_^

If Dollfies we're just 100 USD, I'd buy one in a heart beat after saving up the money :}
I have a friend who is very into BJDs and I've been tempted by a few, but the price tag is quite high. The ones that I would really like to have are both the regular and Alter versions of Saber. At $100, it would be difficult not to buy a few ;)

For me, its not just the base price. Its the base price plus what it costs for accessories, I think a pet would be cheaper, or maybe even a real kid.

They are lovely and they do seem like superb photo subjects, yet next to the price tag (especially the accessories cost too much imho) there's still something about the joints and the fact "you're playing around with a doll" that keeps me from getting one.
If the price tag would be much lower I most likely would be less able to resist.

I voted no on this one. At first i really did find the whole aspect of "Parenting" a dollfie creepy as heck.(Sorry, but I really did.) But now that I've been subjected to pictures of them from DC.com over time, I kind of feel they're not really unpleasant anymore. I still don't really want one though... yet. I could easily afford to buy a few right of the bat but It's still a lot of money. If they were 100 USD... well, maybe possibly... I guess I would have to see one IRL to decide upon something like that. Don't see it happening but... who knows. The whole customization part really speaks to me. :)

As for the question at hand. Dollfie Dreams for $100?
As long as the quality didn't suffer, I am all for it. The only downside would be that I already have 5 Dollfie Dreams, if they were suddenly $100 I would be tempted to get even more then 5 and soon it would get a bit crazy.

I've been into bjd and dd for a long time it feels, since about 2004. At first I wanted but couldn't afford any, then in mid 2005 I got my first doll (a DOD U). I've been a fan of anime/manga for a long time and the dd always appealed to me, but at the time I wasn't confident or knowledgeable about customisation and was too scared to make my own dd.
I remember being so excited when they announced the DD2IF body, it was not strung like the previous body and it had a much better body line, Volks also started really churning out the limiteds after this.
In 2006 I brought home my first dd, Yashiro Kasumi. She was naked and didn't come with her original wig, but she was about $700 cheaper then she was selling on yahoo japan so I jumped at the chance. She is now my most treasured doll. After that I lost my job, so I couldn't buy any more dolls for myself, but I still got a MDD Mirai and a DD Marya from my fiancé as birthday presents for 2008 and 2009.
Now I have a job again, so I'm happy to be able to buy dd again. I have a dd04 head in the post and if all goes well I have a few other custom projects planned too. But I still love the limited dolls too and will try for any dolls I see which I like. The price of dd doesn't bother me at all. If I wanted a cheap doll I could get a dollzone doll or an Obitsu for less then $300, but I don't want to do that. It's not about the price, but the product.
Some people argue expensive cars just aren't worth the extra money over standard cars, but the enthusiasts will say otherwise. It's the same thing with dolls.

same here, I had judgment about dollfie as being creepy, but when I saw dollfie dream I thought oh like a giant figure! But way too expensive. I decided to stop collecting figurines as I don't want it taking up any more space, and I will only do custom 1/6th heads so my 1/6th doll collection does not grow too big.
I am making this sacrifice why? So I can save up for mini dollfie dream parts! I will build one custom girl and thankfully that's it. because the prices are too steep, even too build your own from scratch. $100 dollfie? maybe 2 but that's it!

I want to see a BOY (actually 20-something looking guy) DD. The ironic thing about the possibility of a male DD is that it would likely sell better in the US, where the Ball Joint Doll hobby is by-and-large female with a strong subgroup of BL fangirls, than it would in Japan where the audience for Dollfie Dream is by-and-large male.
Volks makes the occasional male SD and MSD and YO, and also makes 1/6 scale male action figures, but I would LOVE to see a guy. My Obitsu 60cm genderbender boy, who is my Yukino-type's male counterpart, needs a BAND. He's an aspiring musician. I could see him having a girl or two in his band but he needs more dudes.
Obitsu 55cm boys, the only male-by-design Obitsu, look very boyish, and are intended to be seen with 47cm and 50cm girls. This means they are considered MSD sized. However, I have this feeling that once my 55cm abdominal piece comes in from a Parabox group order I'm going to be in on suddenly he'll look a lot more masculine. Maybe even enough to do a couple of Calvin Klein parodies with him. ^_^ Yeah, I'm evil.
But a 60cm 2-piece girl Obitsu, modified with a boy chest and a 55cm boy abdomen and a Henzel head, (Zetto actually has a Gretel head given a masculine faceup) will still look a little weird. I want to see what Volks would do in a Dollfie Dream boy. Because the beauty of the DD line is in the sculpts. It is more likely that Obitsu would do a 65cm sculpted-from-the-ground-up guy than Volks. But Volks is blessed with some wonderful sculptors, and usually come up with more aesthetically pleasing results than Obitsu, particularly where the body is concerned.

I'd also love to see a handsome young man in DD form. Actually there has been a petition to Volks about making a "boyfriend" for our dear Dollfie Dream girls, but the reply was that it's not in their future projects U_U. But we can still hope can't we?

I don't think Volks down to $100.00 US unless they are planing to open a mass production line...
But $250.00 to $350.00 for a full kit doll (face up, clothes, wig) WITHOUT the stupid lottery, and I'd drop for one or two.
$600.00+ before accessories, and having to commit to purchase without a guaranty you're going to get one, kinda kills it for me.
I've got two 27cm Obitsu that I need to do the face up for first. (and the Neko-mimi for)

Most DDs that are sold directly from Volks are not $600+ before accessories. That's the price of scalpers on Yahoo jp and eBay auctions. Volks sold many complete characters in the $500-$600 range, with some exceptions like the girls with armors or weapon parts which cost more obviously. Rin and Sasara's original US price was below $600.

Well, the ones *I* wanted were certainly in that price range... :p
Yeah, I know you can get the bodies for about $200.00 or so, and a head and wig would about round it up to $300 or so, with shipping (Volks USA) but I have no skills to do a face up properly... I really should stop procrastinating on the two Obitsu I got and finish them. Poor Natali has had a "towel" wrapped around her for years now.
Student, Uncle & hopfully a good husband..
If i had tons of budget to burn...and able get goods from japan directly...i would do so....

I've been looking a bit recently for DDs (especially the Saber and Yoko one, they're very pretty and I love these characters), and I could only find 2000 USD and up, which doesn't really fit on my student-with-part-time-job budget. :(

Lemme look into it.

I'm asking for funds to buy a Dollfie for Christmas. If that ends up not being enough, I'll just ask for additional money for my birthday. XD
If DDs cost $100 instead of $400+, I would SO have one already. XD The quality would probably be lower if they cost less though.

WOW! ryomou's looking beautiful these days! you must be very proud, danny. thinking of adopting soon. perhaps with some holiday bonus this year i might treat myself.
as far as a potential price cut it's a mixed bag. if the cost was so drastically reduced i would shudder to think of the inevitable reduction in quality and beauty. i think sometimes you have to pay for the best so i will hoard my shekels until i can afford to do it right.

the popularity of DDs really went all the way up since Danny's post of them between end of last year's and early this year
and honestly I got into DDs because of DC , and I've never regret it , have to really thank you DC ^^

I would most likely do it since I'm already spending as much as $150US on many figures.

Like most here I would definitely get one but the high cost is still keeping me out. All I can do is hope prices drop -_-

I would say that I would if they were $100. I love my Rin and Yoko.

I would want one, but having chinese parents, I bet they would question my interests plus I never bought anything so expensive before, the most expensive thing I ever bought was a VAIO(750 on sale) but that's because it is for study purposes, and at and it would take many years for me to save enough money since I get $5 allowance a month.
First I need to acquire some figmas, which I plan to get for my birthday. Then once I get past grad school, I would definitely buy one.
C.E. Student
Right now I have progressively starting to get figmas which was only a dream to me since I did not have the funds. In the near future, when I get more situated and I will adopt a Dollfie.

Yes, they are expensive, but they totally worth it, so like USD100 Dollfies is a dream, I am willing to pay the real price (basic and unpainted ones are a lot cheaper than limited ones though). And like I collect several types of dolls, I have to get at least one Dollfie Dream in my life, so I'm screwed :P Well, actually there are two Dollfie Dream dolls in my wishlist: one with DD-H01 head to customize as Chii from Chobits and the DD-H03 (Yukino) so I hope to have both of them one day. I have only resin ball jointed dolls by now (The one in my avatar has a Volks body. Volks rules! <3)and I absolutly love their joints, specially the classic and more simple ones. In the bjds forums I participate, DD are allowed, cause the first type was ball jointed and was strung just like the resin ones, so that's how I got to know them. And thanks to Flickr I knew your daughters (they are so gorgeous! <3)

Seriously, i don't mind getting one if it's 100USD. I need a big sister for my Fumi. Fumi is a Azone Pure Neemo anyway. She cost me around 100USD, including shipping. I am more than happy to have her, as i guess Fumi wouldn't mind a big sister who can help her take care of her baby sisters (nendoroids). Well, only if that day will come. XD
Bounty Hunter
I would buy one for 100USD because I have a desire to one up my next purchase. My final target will be a Dutch Wife or a Candy Girl.

I'd be more likely to buy one if the price was $100. At the price they're at right now I'd rather get PVCs/Figmas. The clothes alone cost in the $100+ range.
I have a job
Not into Dollfie but when I saw the White Album ad I got pretty excited.
Now just to wait for the official pics..don't think I'll buy any though.
I think it's still way too much money for a doll :(

I'm looking at adopting a son but the price is something around $650 USD, unfortunately I'd rather put towards a new PC gaming system right now >_<

Do want!

I would definitely get more Dollfie Dreams (I have two right now with two more on the way). Price doesn't really bother me so much about them because they are so well made, they're also quite a bit cheaper than the Super Dollfie (I've moved over from them for the time being). I heard with the latest DD Volks was trying to keep their price down so I expect they're trying to reach a larger market.

From the cute look and details of Dollfie if it was $100 USD I would definitely get a few of my own.

As nice as they are to see in pictures, I don't think I would want to own one. Personally I'm sticking to figures! (^_^)
