Looks like there is no more cause for panic over the dwindling Japanese population - because they will be replaced by robots.
The following documentary covers how men prefer to have hanky panky with a cup and how ladies prefer to to to go to host clubs to choose a ravaging handsome young man who will show his devotion by drinking a load of alcohol and damage his liver to please her.
A most interesting documentary if you got 25 mins - probably learn more by watching this than 25 mins of flying pantsu.

I used to love documentaries about Japan and used to watch them at any given opportunity when I was back in the UK. One that really stuck out in my mind was one on Blue Peter where they showed us capsule hotels, vertical lift car parks and plastic food. Watching them really fueled my determination to get here.
Do they show a fair share of documentaries on Japan in your neck of the woods?

If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.

Very Insightful doco, best one I've seen yet. I see many advantages using robots for labor and such but i started to cringe at the fact that if these robots started to have human emotions, we'll end up having a full on relationship or them wanting to be human, like in 'Bicentennial Man', though being in a relationship with an object is pretty much happening already lol

I have had thought about moving to Japan after I have visited it. but now I have my doubts about living there and being treated like a gaijin, I thought Japan had modernized their views. I understand that the Japanese want people to be accepting of their culture and for foreigners not to enforce their own but to give up tour family name for the sake to gain rights and not associating with foreigners is rather extreme. Though with this in mind I will still like to visit the land of the rising sun but I think I will keep an I on laws and views of immigration, and appreciate what I have in my own country.

Wow, a very interesting documentary really woth the time, would be great if we would get more of them over here.

What shocked me besides the dropping population was that there's something like a "Foreigner card" even if you are born in Japan. What the ****? It might sound extreme but makes me think of stgh we had over here between 1938 and 1945...
So in 50 years a huge part of Japans workingforce will be either robots or foreigners. I guess robots are more likely though.

Very interesting documentary. Thanks a lot, Danny.

Okay. I could accept Gundams and similarly looking robots or you can say mechas as working replacements of humans. But those androids that look like humans creep me out. I can understand why little kids cry when Saya shows that "anger" expression of hers. I mean, it does look like human, but it definitely does not feel like human at all. You know what I mean, don't you?
It's sad to hear even young Japanese saying that taking immigrants in would increase the crime rates. I would really like to see some graphs and surveys on this matter to get a better conception of what majority of Japanese people think of foreigners.

Agree, of course kids will know that she is not even human that fact alone would freak them out. If they seriously believe using an android with no real human emotions can teach kids I think there will new types of psychological disorders. It will will also lower birth rates for sure using a female android with those faces would make boys afraid of a real woman when they grow up. Even I would freak out if that Saya is chasing me with her angry face.

I prefer a human helping me out than a robot. Robot teachers will never work as I dont think they will be able to give feedback to their students like a real human can plus they will be scaring the chicken out of elementary kids with those angry faces, they also wont be able to interpret as a human would with many perspectives.

No matter how many things can get jammed into a robot's CPU it still does not have the will to think freely or even imagine. Even if it may seem they are able to, the truth is they are just programmed to give that kind of response or suggestion.

Well CPU is different how our mind is processed. To have human likeness, we need to step away from the normal architecture of Computing technology.
      My standing is that:
Humans are special because they learn and have emotions and incentives for doing necessities by feeling pleasure. Robots have computers and computers do things because they are told to. No emotion. However, if you put emotions and learning power into the Robot, they become too uncanny to human behavior that killing one would equal to killing a human. Therefore, ethical issues will be waged. we aren't at this level yet, but soon we would probably face this.

Exactly what I think. It doesn't necessarily have to be a work of a hacker. Robots given ability to learn emotions could go crazy, as it was shown for example in I, Robot. As long as they don't have exactly the same morality and feelings processing as humans, they can interpret a lot of things in a different way. And that could put humankind in danger.

Ok, now that I have watches the program, I am a little upset and worried at the same time. The Japanese government needs to give Japanese women more equality when it comes to work and more benfits for couples to have children. There is going to be a surplus of immigrants to Japan because of this, as it is happening here in the US. The whole robot thing creeped me out a lot ^^ I hope this problem gets resolved soon because the fate of anime, manga, Japanese culture, etc is on the line ^_^

This is why I can never picture myself living in Japan. There's just too much hostility against foreigners. How are you going to promote things like world peace if you can't learn about different cultures? As much as Japan is a developing nation with new technologies being made everyday, they sure are somewhat of a backwards society. Every step they take forward they take one step back. They need to give woman more rights and let "foreigners" such as that Korean woman be recognized as a Japanese citizen.

And the robot thing freaks me out. T_T

It seems that living would really become pointless considering there will be no work in the future. Hopefully, The future isn't too near I would still like to live by doing my own dirty work.

and yeah androids freak me out! Would they really satisfy all the lonely men in the world or would they just create more? ><

    What an interesting documentary ^^

Many people are alarmed of Japan rejecting immigrantes, but even knowing I'll be one of those foreigners in a few years, I wouldn't see with good eyes a *massive* immigration.

The solution to Japans declining population is to get the Japanese to start spending more quality time together as a couple or family. Everything i have ever seen about Japanese society indicates a lack personal time in their lives. Mass immigration would only hasten the indigenous population decline by diluting it. The reason Japan is so interesting is because its JAPANESE.

      This.

People can scream immigration all day long, however we all here have to admit becoming interested in a culture that is homogeneous and all the products of this homogeneity...We should learn as much as we can from the Japanese culture without trying to dilute it. And, those of us fortunate enough to visit or live in Japan, we should consider ourselves observers and come to terms with our place in it's society---gaijin.

If Japan doesn't want to get with the times and modernize their expectations about women's gender roles, they will continue to have women opting out of marriage and childbearing. Japan right now is where America was in the late '50s and early '60s wrt gender roles. Re-reading the book "The Feminine Mystique" in the context of expectations of Japanese men for their companions is quite interesting.

The book "Shutting Out The Sun" by Michael Zielenziger is also quite interesting in that he makes a connection between the women who made the choice to leave the work force and marry and have children in the hostile gender environment in Japan and their sons becoming Hikikomori. Take dissatisfied, alienated mothers and absent fathers. Add an economy that crashed around 1990, bullying and even hazing behavior going unchallenged and tolerated in school, and a pressure cooker school environment that still includes cram schools and rote learning and you have a recipe for a lost generation.

There are two Japans: the Japan of pop culture and the Japan of everyday reality. As appealing as Japanese pop culture is, the dark underbelly of Japan is quite ugly indeed.
