Aki Takanori
Aki Takanori - the boss of Good Smile Company at the offices earlier on today together with Chris Gaunt and Ken Lee.
Apart from the Good Smile website (soon to be on the new version of Mirai Gaia) and the Mirai Figma, we are working with GSC on something incredibly exciting - so exciting that it requires 7.5 consecutive changes of skiddy underwear. GSC and I may bring it with us to the AFA09 next month. Possibly the first of its kind?
Anyway, back to Aki-san. Probably the most talented businessman that I have met. He started off doing things like running a talent agency Whoopee and jewelry design at Dicokick (which he still owns) and progressed to doing distribution for figure companies like Max Factory and Alter.
Through working with these figure companies, Aki gained experience in the figure production process and GSC started to release their own figures.
While Aki-san is not a huge figure fan himself, his passion is making figures and seeing folks around the world smiling and enjoying his company's work - this is the reason why the company is called "Good Smile Company."
Aki's other passion is for fast cars which is why he set up Good Smile Racing where they make car accessories.
And the other passion Aki has is for cycling and folks who follow the GSC closely will know that Aki does a load of activities involving cycling across Japan.
Aki has taken his passion and created a successful business. He is successful because he set up businesses where he could pursue his passion. Passion leads to great products and great products leads to demand.
Aki is an avid DC reader and is keeping a look out for comments on this post in particular because we would like to ask what figure requests you have for GSC. You can answer from a pure "because-that-character-is-mai-waifu" standpoint or from a business perspective - why you think a certain figure will sell, what trends you notice and maybe even a sales forecast?! Bare in mind that the production process from concept to it hitting the shelf can take over 6 months.
If somebody for example mentioned "Figma Kana from Minamike (season 1)" and you agree, then add a "+1" to that thread.
If you are interested in reading about life in Japan, seeing photos taken daily around Tokyo, like Japanese subculture (anime, manga, figures, Dollfies) then you may want to start delving into the Japan or Figure categories for a start or have a gander at all photo articles.
If you don't have much time now, maybe subscribe to the RSS Feed, Twitter Feed or join the other readers in the FaceBook Page.

There are quite a lot Figmas i would like, however the one i have been missing and why i bought the Nendo of it would be Yoko Ritona, she's just to cool imo. ;)

I wonder if gashapon should really count. I tend to leave mine out when counting figures, which probably skews the numbers a bit. Not counting those, I've got somewhere between 20-40 GSC/MF figures. I'd have to get an exact count when I'm at home.

I'd say To Heart 2 Figmas, but since Griffon plans to release poseable To Heart 2 figures, I doubt if releasing Figmas of them next year would be a good idea.
Therefore, I'll say Idolm@ster Figmas. I'd buy them, including Ritsuko, I'd have to think about buying Ryo though ^^; Pucchi Nendos aren't quite enough.

Sakata Gintoki - I believe Gintama is a really popular anime in both Japan and overseas. I think a Gintoki figure or figma will appeal to both males and females. There are not much Gintama figures as well.

I'd love to have a Figma of C.C. to go with Lulu and Suzaku, and it would be nice to see some more PVC figures of her as well. It would also be good to see more Figmas of popular male characters - I know that the existing ones are pretty popular not just among figure fan communities, but also on the relevant fan communities on Livejournal (which is majority female users).

Can you make a WRC line? (Good Smile Racing) Btw, that Lancia Stratos is beautiful. Or what about Moe air fresheners? Another idea is to create models of Japan-only (JDM) cars and market them specifically to North America. There are a lot of JDM fans here.
And Initial D is always good, although there probably is already quite a bit of that stuff available.
I think most importantly is to make it easy to order and ship. Ship from the US (+ Canada!!) to minimize shipping costs for the consumer and make the 'shall I buy it' barrier lower.
The packaging should be Japanese. The consumer needs to have the feeling it comes straight out of Japan.

A Fate / Stay Night - Unlimited Blade Works Rin / Archer set!!
Reasons:
1) I don't a Rin figure
2) or Archer for that matter ^^;;
3) Unlimited Blade Works is being released as movie, so a figure set would be cool
4) Fate / Stay Night is still quite popular
I am a huge Fate fan, and I know there are many more out there. So from a business standpoint, sure they will sale. Plus with the Unlimited Blade Works movie coming out next year, sure that will also increase demand for a figure set.
And after all the positive reviews of the Saber Lily figure, I know GSC can make spectacular Rin / Archer set!!!

I wonder about the Shuraki series it seemed the figures were very popular when they came out. I was hoping to see Monica Dread Oliver and the miko but not sure if there is still enough interest in it. I know Kuroshitsuji is not as appealing to male fans but Sebastian and Ciel would look great in 1/8th scale!

Considering that I don't watch anime much and probably 90% of my figures in collection come from series and games which I don't know where it came from, I purchase figures purely because of their aesthetic quality. What catches my eye and ultimately determines a purchase is not what character it is, but how dynamic and unique the figure is for me.
That being said, the accessories that comes with any figure, be it a nendo or a figma, the accessories plays a huge influence in affecting the purchase!

I've already +1ed Aria a few comments up so that's good. Now for what I'd really like to see.
1.) Rozen Maiden (all characters). Rozen Maiden is severely lacking figures and with the recent explosion in popularity of dolls, it is honestly a gold mine. I'd capitalize on that by releasing Rozen Maiden Nendoroids and maybe even figmas. If you do make Suiginto's figma, please, give her several kinds of wings.
2.) Touhou - Surprisingly, Touhou has become insanely popular in the last year. Try making more Touhou Nendoroids and Figmas of not just the main characters but more of the popular bad guys and watch the profits. Expand your market to overseas. Convince Zun, if you can. Alcohol might work. lol
3.) Yumemi Hoshino (Reverie) Planetarian Reverie of a Little Planet - Now for an obscure request. Yumemi Hoshino (or Reverie in English), the talkative android in the abandoned planetarium. The visual novel has some popularity and it has grow over the years through word of mouth. I would LOVE to see a nendoroid or full sized figure of Reverie (Yumemi).

anyway, due to my very biased nature, I want to request nendoroids and scale figures of Hibari Kyouya and Dino Cavallone from 'Katekyo Hitman Reborn!'.
Doesn't seem like anyone will vote on DC, but I bet if all the fangirls saw this, they would reply in a heartbeat xD
Reborn is pretty popular in Japan (since it's Shonen Jump) and since these two are big fan favorites, I bet they'd sell pretty well. (it'd also be good if you made them (the scale figures) in a matching pose or something so then people would have to buy both to complete it)

I think there's a bit of a gap between dedicated figure communities and places like Livejournal where a large part of the female anime fan base can be found, but there's also a lot of interest in figures among female fans. I posted news about the Kuroshitsuji Nendoroids over at the relevant LJ community and got an extremely enthusiastic response and users were trading tips on their favourite import stores in order to buy the figures, so I feel like there's a lot of interest but none of the companies are really making much effort to tap into that.

The reality is boy figures are under-represented and there seems to be demand for quality ones (at least all good ones seems to be sold out instantly).
Also on the girl front:
Yue and keroberos (the lion, not plush toy) and Sakura from Card Captor Sakura. (there are many resin kits, but not many completed figures it seems).
I don't know how viable is it to make figures for old shows, but given that Hunter x Hunter and Hikaru no Go hold pretty high spots at anidb.net top 10, a lot of people should still like them.
If there needs to be a recent anime re-run with new episodes, for a lot of the shows above (e.g. Hunter x Hunter) that would be evn better ;)

As I don't watch anime too often, any I do watch is often based on the popularity of the series. Two series that come to mind are at entirely different areas of the spectrum. 'K-On!' for it's cute, offbeat, quirkiness, and 'Bakemonogatari' for it's creepy, beautiful, sleek storylines.

kudos to Aki. Where can I ask Aki-san advice on setting up a business in my country here on anime products. Imo, my country is like a forgotten place for anything anime and being a fan of anime, i very much want to bring many anime related products here. To give a view of the opportunity i have - there's no manga, figures, dvd's, audio products, stickers, etc available here. And the only channel broadcasting anime is Animax. I definitely agree with the puchi nendo Kuroshitsuji suggestion; it has enough characters to make two or three sets and it'd be a less risky choice for the buyers who may not be that into the series. Bah at least that's how I look at it; I rather buy a 50 dollar 10 piece box so I get more figures (and variety) than spend the same amount on a lone big figure (which aren't bad either, mind you).

Well, since I have 8 nendoroids and 2 figmas, I'm already at 10 GSC figures, then counting 2 more Max Factory figures and one GSC figure, I'm in the 11-20 section.
Certainly +1 for Kana!! Figma, nendoroid or regular figure, all good. I love Kana :)

I've been waiting for years for a company to make figures of Clamp's characters which accurately depict the character designs and personalities. I can't think of a better company than Good Smile to accomplish this, so I sincerely hope the idea is given some thought as well as the other suggestions I've made below. I'd happily go into debt for any and all of the following:
Scale Figures AND Nendoroids:
(Card Captor Sakura): Sakura (many, many beautiful outfits to choose from), Syaoran, Tomoyo, Touya, and Yukito
(Tsubasa): Sakura, Syaoran, Kurogane, and Fai (manga-based instead of anime)
(X): Kamui, Fuuma, and Subaru
(Kobato): Kobato
(Touhou): Sanae, Aya, and Sakuya
(Minami-ke): Kana and Chiaki as scale figures (and a Kana Nendoroid please!)
(Hetalia): There is an incredibly HUGE fanbase for Hetalia and I just know pre-orders would sell out nearly instantly! I'd love to see as many of the personified countries as possible and I know I'd buy them all!
(Vocaloid): Yowane Haku (The Nendoroid Petit of her is adorable, but I'd love to see a scale figure and regular Nendoroid of her)
(Junjou Romantica): Akihiko, Misaki, Hiroki, Nowaki, Miyagi, and Shinobu (I can't wait to see the GSC Junjou Nendoroid Petits, but I'd also love to see the rest of the main characters as well... as petits, scale figures, and as Nendoroids)

Oh! I can't believe I forgot! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE to see Mirai-chan as a figure or Figma in nekomimi form (with tail)! Can't believe no one else loves (some of) my favorite series. Would must rather prefer statues, but Figmas would be cool, too. Nendos... well, they're cute. I'd buy them after the statues and the Figmas. Priorities, you know. :)

I have the Wave and Bome Norikos, but would love a set of all three heroines done up proper! (Wave is okay and all, but charging a "real scale" price for a 1/10 statue is just plain offensive.)

I have Mahoro and her bike, but seriously, 1/12?! Real scale, please. They don't need to be FREEing 1/4 scale Haruhi bunnies, but at least let me be able to make out the details when it's sitting on a shelf. Wasn't a huge fan of Minawa, but Triomatic is a must! Shikijo-sensei isn't a must, but might be fun if there's money left in the wallet. :)

Everyone loves Eri, but Mikochin and Yakumo are my faves! I've never seen Akira outside of trading figures, and yeah, Harima's a dude, but he's just too awesome! And fo sho I'd buy an Akira Nendo dressed up in a King Penguin costume!

From a business perspective - Season 2 just ended not long ago, and it did gathered an increase amount of fanbase. Noticing Horo merchandise trends does indicate good sales. Even had an event with Koshimizu Ami herself attending handing out the hand puppets (which i obtained) to people that bought the tickets (a good 8k yen)
and most importantly, with the exception of maybe volks' upcoming horo figure (which i also PO'ed), and the previous gsc/koto horo figures, the rest of the horo figures in the market saddens me (cospa ones were ok, i guess), which is more than enough reason to have other makers who think they are able to breathe life into Horo to take up this figure.

I know that there would probably be quite a few licencing issues but I'd love to see some figures of Sakura Kinomoto from CardCaptor Sakura (especially a figma) there's lots of potential with all the different costumes.
Also we need a complete range of Touhou figma and nendoroids because I'd really love a cirno figure :D
