Haruhi Movie

Looks like we are in store for a Haruhi movie due out in theaters across Japan in Spring 2010.
Following the last episode - Someday in the Rain - of the Haruhi Suzumiya renewal season, Kadokawa and Kyoto Animation announced that a Haruhi movie will be released in theaters this Spring 2010. Details are sparse on the production but the movie is to be based on 'The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya' arc from the fourth novel which follows the Brigade in a "Haruhi-less world of normalcy".
Hijacked from Raz at figure.fm via ANN.
I pretty much missed most of the last Haruhi season ToT. Maybe can watch it on the plane over to Singapore.

Season 2 wasn't that great at all... It answers a few unanswered questions from season 1, but that's about it... Endless Eight was just a complete waste of time.
New movie... hopefully there's more action and suspense in there. Season 2 was bone dry.

Agreed. I could not get past the repeating episodes of Endless Eight. Haruhi was such a big hit; it's unfortunate that the second season kind of took a lot away from it.
I'm not even sure if I should be excited for the movie.

You both also need to read the way it was written. You will find that the story and episodes are parallel to each other.

Regardless of story and plot and how it's written, I just can't stand 5 repeating episodes.

Season 2...You can't call 5-some episodes a season (because the rest were just repeats...darn Endless Eight). I agree that the "2nd season" was horrible and a waste. Hopefully the movie wont be a repeat of the horror that is season 2.

All I will say is that if you read the light novel series, then you will enjoy season 2. Mostly because they made it the way the story was originally written. (It's my conclusion to why people dislike season 2. They never read the original storyline so when KyoAni did the story, it separated the lightcore fans who hated it from the hardcore fans who either understood and accepted it or liked/loved the fact they stayed true to the original works.)
And I agree. They should write a book titled "The Disappearance of The Surprise of Haruhi Suzumiya". XP (Good news is that Nagaru Tanigawa is prepping up the light novel for publication. So it should be out by the end of this year.)
Aspiring Computer Programmer, just a student though.
I understand what you're trying to say, but even so it didn't follow the exact way in which the light novel presented this arc. I have actually read the light novels and I didn't like season 2 either. I hope I'm recalling this correctly, but were there EIGHT instances of this arc in the actual light novel series? If so then my bad, but from my somewhat hazy recollection I don't remember reading this eight times in the actual light novel. Ultimately, my point is that even if that was the way it was written in the light novel, it doesn't adapt well to 20-21 minute length animations in order to keep entertainment up, and thus was not a good 'anime' in itself (well at least I believe that's the general/majority's consensus). To be honest, I'm not so much a hardcore fan of the Haruhi series myself, but you seemed to take issue to a lot of people's bashing of season 2, and blame it solely on these people not knowing that this is actually how it was presented in the light novel. But that doesn't necessarily have to be the reason. Off my own opinion, the second season of the anime was not good. But I would agree without a doubt that the light novel (for this arc at least, I haven't read Haruhi in a while :P) was great.

I've read and I still think they messed up with so many episodes devoted to the same plot. A good story doesn't necessarily translate well from one medium to another.

Disagree with that, I've read the novels and while I liked the second season I feel that stretching out the endless summer arc to eight episodes was way overkill.

Yeah, but one thing is the written novel and another totally different thing is turn that into animation, I mean is an adaptation, in the novels you can read the endless eight but you don't get bored but turn that into animation and it would be a completely different experience, a sad and boring experience.

I disagree on the grounds that I read the light novel version first. I found it to be boring and redundant when I first read it. But, at the same time, it made me appreciate the animated version more simply because they stayed true to the source material.
And I can say that unlike the movie or TV adaptions of other novels (i.e. Jurassic Park), I found it to be refreshing that they took a risk to give a pure version to the fans, opposed to alienating the hardcore fans by making another "Garlic Jr. Saga" just because the lightcore fans may want that more than the original source material. Um... no. There was only ONE chapter of Endless Eight that happened to recall the 15,498 times the chapter being 15,498th. While the anime goes on to 15,532 which by my calculations that's 34 higher than the light novel's.
I could understand if the anime did the repeat twice but to do 5 episodes of repeat, having 1 to set it up, and having 1 more to finish it? THAT'S RIDICULOUS! I, too, am a hardcore Haruhi fan that has read all the light novels and watched all the anime episodes (not counting the last Endless Eight episode, lost patience with it) and I found Season 2 lacking.
If they only cut out a margin of Endless Eight I believe it would've been a really good anime but alas. I'm gonna watch the movie since the Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi was my favorite light novel of the series.
~Undine~
http://bluebluewave.wordpress.com
Your statements about this are rather incorrect, both "Endless Eight" and "The Day of Sagittarius" stories featured in the same novel and were of similar chapter length, yet "The Day of Sagittarius" chapter was condensed into a single well done episode of the first season while "Endless Eight" was stretched out to eight episodes in the second season.
Kyoto Animation could have very easily brought the "Endless Eight" story in two or three episodes while staying true to the original novel. People aren't complaining because "Endless Eight" is or is not true to the original novel, they're complaining because it was dragged on for so long without much reason and we already had to wait such a long period to finally get this second season of Haruhi.
In fact I could go on to say that Kyoto Animation actually veers away from the original novel by stretching out the "Endless Eight" story with iterations that weren't told in the novels.

So you are simply saying that KyoAni should not be known for being true to the original source material, and should just cut corners in storylines and/or make filler storylines that will complicate the overall quality of the series.
Barsona, read the "Endless Eight" storyline. You will find that KyoAni did and wanted to keep it true to how Nagaru Tanigawa wrote it. But the only difference is that they added the extra effort by putting it in chronological order. (-_-;;

That's because you watched the anime series before reading the light novel. I felt it was the opposite just because they bothered being true to the series. I mean, they could have cut corners, or just add filler that contradicts the facts written in the original source material. But they did not, and stayed true to the original source material.

Read the light novel series. Endless Eight was written that way. So as much of a trolling, disappointment, etc. it might have been... It was true to the original source material. (^_^;;

Hmmmmmm... This is creeping me out. Because a while back, if anybody recalls, I predicted that this story arc would become a movie. But a few members put some of their logic to dismiss that idea by stating that KyoAni was not the type of studio big enough to turn that storyline into a movie. And after all said and done... My prediction comes true. :O
And as for those hating Season 2, all I will say to you is that KyoAni did Endless Eight exactly how it was written. If they cut corners, then it would not be true to the light novel series. And then they would be "trolling" both Nagaru Tanigawa, the people who bothered reading the light novel series, and the hardcore Haruhi fans who wanted the series to be as true and as intelligent as the stories/series was done. (^_^;;

That's a nice way of saying "I told you so" XD
Anyway... It's not about how big the studio is and I don't doubt KyoAni could do a theatrical release of something. It's just that they could've easily fit the arc into the "2nd season" but decided to repeat similar episodes for more than half the season.
NOW... before you go rant on how I missed the point of Endless Eight in eight episodes, I did watch every single episode. It was nice to see some little differences, but it's basically the same dialogue and storyline for about 7 episodes. When it comes down to it, I only liked the last episode of Endless Eight because it's the TRUE story of Endless Eight; because it's EXACTLY like the ONE chapter of the light novel. That is one episode I wouldn't mind watching 8 times. I, and many others here have commented that the chapter in the light novel was not published 8 times in the same book... and I don't think I've heard your opinion on this statement.
The beauty with the first season was that it was so different and unique that I wouldn't mind choosing to watch them over and over. But if one story is forced on the audience in several repetitions then people lose their choice and lose their interest.
You have to understand that you can't argue your point to every one who did not like the repetitions of the same thing over and over. Even if there are some who would share your opinion there are thousands of people out there who don't like it. Not a lot of people are masochist to the Haruhi-ism. There are a lot who hated it in the first place, but to alienate the existing fans just doesn't seem like good business to me.
Personally I would watch the movie, but I worry that the Endless Eight alienation might make people stay away from it. We'll have to see what happens next spring.
~Undine~
http://bluebluewave.wordpress.com
Sounds to me like you're nearly trolling on people because they express their opinion which doesn't fit yours because they don't see it the same way you do. >_>
As I said above, Kyoto Animation could have very easily brought the "Endless Eight" story in two or three episodes while staying true to the original novel's story. People complained because "Endless Eight" in the anime was stretched out over so many episodes while they could have told it the same way, with the same original material in 2 or 3 episodes.
So before you rant how Kyoto Animation is true to the source and people don't get it, explain this to me. Both "Endless Eight" and "The Day of Sagittarius" stories featured in the same novel and were of similar chapter length, yet "The Day of Sagittarius" chapter was condensed into a single episode of the first season while "Endless Eight" was stretched out to eight episodes in the second season... why? To stay true to the source material? I doubt it because then "The Day of Sagittarius" should have taken up 8 episodes as well and would have turned the first Haruhi season into a space sci-fi action anime.

You are trolling, which is very silly. I look at the posts above and see you posting the same reply to each of them, as if you are trying to stuff your point down their throats. You have voiced your opinion, it's ok, you're entitled to your own.
The simple fact of the matter is that the repeating episodes of Endless Eight were not entertaining to watch. That is pretty much the long and the short of it, regardless of however faithful you think they may have been. Monotony is neither fun nor interesting. It's tedium.
NEET

Like how books sometimes become bad movies because they cut corners, the same can be said about Endless Eight becoming bad because it's just too long. They could have cut it to lets say 4-5 episodes and that would've still gotten the same "absolute boredom/sympathy with Yuki" effect to the audience -- with less rage and hate. The huge difference is that you can choose when to start and stop reading the light novel but with regards to anime, people wait to get to watch an episode once a week. It's quite a bummer to actually see the same thing with minimal changes for almost two months -- considering that what is to be aired this season consists of only 15 episodes.
I have to admit, I have not read the light novel series, so I initially reacted with rage with the Endless Eight arc. But I endured 5 episodes before getting tired of looking forward to the next episode. I also don't think it's nice to instantly "brand" those who dislike the execution of Endless Eight as non-hardcore fans.

Technically, no. The "second season" of Haruhi that most people are referring to is simply a collection of "new" episodes that were spliced into a re-airing of the first season, thereby filling in chronological gaps with supplemental material from Tanigawa's original light novels (read: Endless Eight). Some people denote such as a 'second season', though in doing so they unintentionally include the autonomous first season. These new episodes have been called everything from Haruhi 2009, to Haruhi Revival, etc. etc. etc. I'm not aware of any "official" name.

Just because it stays true to the source doesn't mean it will be as good in a different medium.

I liked second series (it really is a different show from the first series) more since it brought out what happened to the universe when the SOS-dan were shooting the movie. That alone to me was enough for me to think it was a greater series. The story made more sense, it had more meat to the body and also it had emotion that the first series did not have. The first season was just a promo for the Haruhi books, the real story is about to be told after the second series.

A lot of hate for season two, sure the endless eight were a dull but I thought the last two episodes of the season hit some pretty core things in the series. I don't know what Kyo-animation was thinking about when they repeated the same episode four times after the orginal endless eight. Sure, the series does have an arc in it but I think 2-3 repeats would have done it. However, all of those episodes weren't all exactly the same. Ex: Mikuru getting pelted in the face with a beach volleyball ^_^ Anyways, I can't wait till I can see the movie and Nagato looks kawaii in glasses, scarf, and winter coat ^^
