NDS Backup

Aoi-chan having a few rounds of Love Plus. Was suprised to hear many of my female comrades love the game too - any of you playing?
In the past, Nintendo has tried many times to crack down on companies that make backup devices for the Nintendo DS - the devices known as "Majikon" [マジコン] in Japanese.
Nintendo released a statement yesterday outlining how they have tried for the past two years to get rid of these device makers/sellers. What Nintendo done was to mainly send a bunch of warnings which got soaked in water, swallowed and dumped with the rest of the undigested corn and spinach.
Apart from saying that they are now going to actually sue these sellers, Nintendo have also taken a new strategy to try and get the public to report sellers flogging these devices.
Nintendo have set up a form which you can use to grass on sellers on and offline - would you if you spotted one?

Walk into any convenient store in Japan and more often than not, you will see mags published with the specific purpose of teaching folks how to use/where to buy and where to download roms for these devices.

Get along to Amazon and you will see such a publication. Have a look at the related items and you will see a ton more.
Have a feeling that these publishers are going to have to go a few rounds in the ring with Nintendo.
I was rather surprised when I saw them in the convenience stores/book shops. Inside there would be links to a load of sites on where to download roms and where to buy the devices.
Do they have books like this in your neck of the woods?

An article by Brian at Kotaku notes how folks using these backup devices range from female students to businessmen.

I see also googling around that these modchips are being sold in vending machines. Which reminds me of a post a while back about what kind of vending machines would you make or stuff sold. If your backing up games you own, then yes. If doing copies for profit without consent then no, I would go into the whole good side bad side thing but don't want to write an entire page on it....Well not now anyway.

B-b-b-but the PSP is so wonderful when hacked. ;_; Honestly, if cfw never existed, I would never have gotten a PSP.
So on one hand, they make a hardware sale but no games. On the other hand, they sell neither. Obviously the former is slightly better, but I guess it's still a catch-22.
University Student
Those mags must be a joke. You can get the same results by just googling around for a bit if you are new to the device. No need to waste money on such things when Google is free.

Some people aren't computer-literate and still need the source in a magazine. There's nothing wrong with it; some people still buy the newspaper even though there are many free online versions.

What do we, the consumers, get in exchange for ratting out on these sellers and developers of Majikon?
Personally, though these custom firmware developers only aim to make games more easily available to the masses, they are in fact putting them and the very consoles they "hack" out of business. While I definitely would want to be thrifty with the games I like, I still want to look forward to future releases.
Would I want to report them? What's in it for me? =P
pervert
if there is a reward then i dont mind ratting on someone but if there isnt then i will just have to blackmail the guy selling it

Backup devices for the DS? I haven't really encountered such a thing before, but I don't really think that I'd bother to report sellers. I doubt I'd be up to the task of performing a free service to the Nintendo corporation out of good faith all that often.
If Nintendo's not to bother making their games at least compatible with different regions ( and eliminate the need to get a additional WII/DS ) , i don't see why i have to be bothered. Afterall, who won't be aware of the risks and be willing to void their warranties?
So what if Nintendo is trying to have stringent anti-piracy strategies?
Student
I'm not 100%, but I think the DS games are all region free. Which is probably why they can have such a good case against these products. I bought mine from Amazon over a year ago before they removed them all...
This is a huge problem for the game industry. It should be stopped as soon as possible. Then again, they should release products that aren't so easy to hack. The PSP was hacked within months of it's original release. They should pay a bunch of hackers to try and crack these things like apple is now paying the kid who hacked the iPhone in a week to test their products.

this is redundant when i first got my first PSP cause i wanted to hack it and add homebrew apps like an internet radio but with version 2.8 ( i believe) Internet Radio was added to the PSP. lol

keyword: i WANTED to hack it but i never did. i tuck with official firmware and always have. i'd hate risking bricking new expensive devices

if a magazine was sold in the U.S. with a how to hack guide line, they would be sued is the matter of minutes. Nintendo has been fighting hard against people who hack their wii, Nintendo recently released a firmware that would kill any wii that has been hacked. the down point to that is that the new firmware is also killing some wiis that have not been hacked.

This is a neverending struggle with not only game consoles, but any other device as well. It will never be resolved; it'll just get extended with each new console and new firmware.
Personally I really like the fact I can do other things with the machines I buy. I never sold my gadgets since I use them until they fall apart in pieces, so I might as well take advantage of their capabilities to the max.

I agree with yaku. There are Pros and cons in being able to personalize your consoles/handheld. I think that as long as some people are not satisfied with what they get in their gadgets that this battle will never end. Taking matters to court will just compensate some wounds but will not heal it.It will just cause the "haxing" industry to go more underground.
On the other note, I think that console makers shouldnt solely try to eliminate these problems. It is also up to game developers and publishers to start stepping up.

I've never bothered to hack my psp or DSi, well it was because I was worried I would brick my psp and that I only just recently bought a DSi.

Nintendo is dumb. It's perfectly legal to buy and use one of these cards. The problem starts from people downloading games instead of paying for them.

I agree, how would you feel if you bought a house and you weren't allow to upgrade, modify or even change the look of it?
If you buy the hardware, you should be allowed to modify and do whatever you want with it, however stealing software and other games though, I don't agree with.

they can try their hardest... but the harder they make it to hack, the more hackers will want to hack it.. i won't turn anyone in sorry o_o they can do that work on their own, let them pay some schmuck to do it... its a waste of my time to help them, most people don't pirate their video games anyway, they get lots of money from strait laced people... I'll say this, people are tired of paying $70 USD for a video game, seeing as you can take 1 $70 game and duplicate it thousands of times so only 1 game costs money to make then it only costs them for the disk..
they can afford to drop the prices but they won't because rich people buy them... they act like its hard to make a video game, these days its something that can easily be done on a home computer. they can't continue hiding their tyrant like behavior, sure in 1980 to 2000 games like the ones we have on the market would sell for $70, but its almost 2010 now and hardware and software is easier to get, 800GB of HD space is a normal thing... quad core processors, 8GB of RAM, and computers with this stuff can be bought for like $3000 >_>
if you piece it all together you start to see the big picture, I'm not saying its good to pirate but they should know that as time goes by and prices keep going up, people are going to use more reasonable ways of obtaining games. by over pricing games they only hurt them selves in the long run, people will feel less inclined to pirate games if the prices were affordable.

Though the hack units are an interesting idea, they ultimately cause more harm than good. I've heard several stories about units getting bricked. I guess, because I don't get that many portable games, it's not as important for me. What I want is a way to legally make backups of my PlayStation games. (Which, if you do here, will get you massive fines, thanks to the DMCA. If they were on tape, whole different story.)
code monkey
If this is what people are doing with their devices then somebody should get a clue and make a device that actually does what consumers want. People want Sony and Nintendo's portable devices and games, but they don't want to be pigeon holed into their restrictive services and software that waste the potential of their hardware. It's no wonder smartphones, which are horrible platforms for gaming, have been getting so much attention as gaming platforms.

I spotted those "how to hack your console" magazines in Seven Eleven stores and bookshops in HK - Translated Chinese versions probably. I was a bit surprised too considering how they've been trying to clamp down on the Majikon devices in the smaller computer game shops.

I like to use the car analogy. If I buy a car, then it is *MINE*! I will do with it as I so chose. Now if I want to make changes to the car, I'll concede the maker has the right to void the warranty. I might even go as far as allow that they can refuse to service it if I make a big enough change. But there are after market parts dealers all over the world willing and able to (legally) sell me those parts. If I put a nitro tank and a blower on my car and it's illegal to have these thing on a street car, then the cops will be pulling me over. Thats expected. If I only take it to a track on the back of a trailer, thats another story.
The console makers seem to think that they have a say in what I do with MY property. If I break the law with such mods, there is existing copyright law (here at least) to deal with that. My take is if I want a function that the maker does not provide, It's my option to add it. (same deal as per warranties apply as above) I find this whole arms race thing a waste of time for makers, and may in the long term hurt sales. If they were smart, the console makers would look at the more popular add-ons that people are getting, and build in those features with the next iteration of the hardware. Micro-squish had a DRM wrapper that was supposed get added to non-DRM'd content if you loaded it onto a Zune. If this is still case, then that piece of hardware will never open my wallet.

we should be allowed to do whatever we want with tech we purchase HOWEVER...
if we don't ever buy stuff then the companies will stop developing good stuff to play. so we need to have a conscience with whatever we do. which is naive as hell.
...and there you have it. a barrel roll.

companies make good games because they want money. saying they are gonna stop trying to make money just because people pirate games is wrong... like i said in my above comment they over charge for the games they create, obviously if people stopped buying their overly priced stuff it would force them to make sales and actually start working HARD at selling their stuff, instead of just selling stuff at high prices because people have no cheaper alternative and have to buy it for whatever price they charge..
Student
personally, I like to buy the games. I don't mind paying for them if it means that producers will be encouraged to make even better ones.
